Return To Silent Hill
Chapter 6
Confusing Clues

Itachi ducked through the opening and raised an eyebrow at the room, completely unprepared to see a normal office like room. There was nothing out of the ordinary here. It looked like the town hadn't just been sucked into darkness and creatures weren't lurking around every corner. He wondered if a therapist would be in order after this was over because this place was enough to mess up anyone's mental state. He stopped short as he watched the girls move around the room. His eyes narrowed on Kitty. Something wasn't right about her or maybe it was him. All he knew was he didn't like the way he was drawn to her. Did it have something to do with this place? He needed to find out soon.

He hadn't realized he was staring at the damn women until she lifted her head from the papers she was looking at. She made eye contact with him, inclining her head to the side in questioning. He only made a sound deep in his throat and turned away from her. He made his way to a desk that was behind the counter. He rummaged through the papers on the surface. Most of them were bookkeeping and accounting, nothing of importance. He opened the middle drawer and the first thing that caught his attention was a set of keys. He lifted them to better look at them. Apparently, they were the master keys to the rooms. He put them in his pocket as he continued searching.

“I found a map of the motel layout.” Beth called from close to the front door.

“Sweet, maybe now we can navigate this place.” Kitty responded absently as she took a seat near the door.

Itachi ignored them as he shut the drawer and opened the one on the right side. It was set up like a filing cabinet. He glanced at the tab names, reading each one carefully until he stopped at the one that said, `Confidential'. When he pulled the divider forward to look at the contents, it was empty. He frowned as he shut the drawer. Where were all the files? Did someone move them? Why did he feel like he needed to see them so badly? He felt almost desperate like they held some kind of piece to his past that seemed to be buried from his memories.

“Now this is interesting.” Kitty spoke in surprise as she placed the newspaper on the coffee table. “This article is about an orphanage here in Silent Hill. It keeps making references to a cult.”

“I wish I had time to sit around and read the paper.” Hayate replied slightly annoyed.

Kitty was about to retaliate, but Itachi spoke first. “Read it.” He ordered.

“Yes Master.” She snapped sarcastically. He gave her a look that clearly stated, `You want to die?' She just shrugged it off. She knelt down over the paper so that she could better see the words. “Let's see here…

“Silent Hill Orphanage, which is owned by Silent Hill Smile Support Society also known as The Four S's, was closed down yesterday because they were exposed for running forbidden rituals involving the children. Furthermore, they were connected to a cult that has been doing horrible things since the opening of this well-known orphanage. The case with Alessa Gillespie was one of the biggest mysteries, but the officials are convinced that this nameless cult had something to do with it.

“Eight year old, Alessa was found in the orphanage, by an innocent civilian as the building was burning to the ground. She was badly charred and barely alive. The man who found her stated that it looked like some kind of ritual was being conducted. Alessa was taken to Brookhaven Hospital and was kept alive on life support. Not much was known about the girl after that, for the hospital refused to let that information out for the public. No one knows what happened to Alessa Gillespie.

“The Four S's rebuilt that orphanage after the fire, but things were never the same. Rumors had been spread through out the town of the cult's activities, but no one knew what to believe. That is until a cult follower came forth and told the press and officials of the horrors going on inside the orphanage. The detectives went to the orphanage, but were refused entrance. The police got a warrant and raided the place. Not many details were released, but the fact that they were doing demonic rituals was laid forth. Who's to know what really happened inside that orphanage or how many children suffered because of it, but The Four S's are under close watch and who knows what will become of them.

“That's all it says, but it has a picture of the orphanage.” Kitty finished as she looked up at Itachi.

He moved forward and leaned down so that he could look at the paper. The picture was old but he could make out the sign of Silent Hill Orphanage. The building was four stories tall and it had many windows. He picked the newspaper up so that he could look at it the right way. His eyes narrowed as a sensation washed over him of familiarity. It was almost like he had seen the place before, but he had never been here so why? Why would he feel like this place was once called home? His heart was hammering in his chest and he was short of breath as a bad feeling started to swell in the pit of his stomach.

He dropped the paper back down onto the table as he turned his back to the two females. He didn't want to concern them. This was his problem and his alone. He wanted to figure this out without outside influence. He wanted to decipher his own emotions he let the others in on his thoughts. They needed to go t the orphanage though. He had a feeling many of his questions would be answered there. Who was this Alessa Gillespie? He had a feeling the girl played a huge part in this. He just couldn't understand what part.

He pulled out the town map, unfolding it and laying it out on the countertop so that he could study it. He turned to face Kitty once more as he grabbed the candle off the table. He could feel her eyes on him, but he ignored her as he turned back to the counter. He scanned the buildings laid out on the map and saw nothing that said anything about the orphanage. He wondered if they didn't put it on the map because it was closed down.

He was about ready to fold it back up when one place caught his eye. There was nothing on the paper indicating what the place was, but he had a feeling it was the orphanage. The place was on the outskirts of the town. He just needed to figure out a way to get to the place and he would have his answers. He was sure of it. He set the candleholder down on the counter as he reached for the map but a hand stopped him. He looked up to see Kitty staring at him. She removed the pamphlet from him. He glared at her but allowed her to do so.

“Is this some place we need to go too?” Kitty asked as she placed the map in her own back pocket.

Itachi just eyed her closely but didn't answer. He was excessively irritated that she could read him so well. Who was she to know him like this? Why was she haunting his thoughts? Something was off with her and her friend. How was it that they both ended up here at the same time as him and Hayate? He didn't believe in fate. It was too cliché. These two were here for a reason, whether they realized it of not. They were all here for a purpose. He just hadn't been able to come up with a reason why. He wasn't sure he wanted too. This place was cursed and he had a feeling the curse was branded onto his soul.

“Earth to Itachi.” Kitty shook his arm; bring him back to the present.

He glanced at her once more and nodded his head slightly to her question from earlier. He wasn't much for words so he made no exception this time. He just pushed her hand off his arm and walked away. He had a feeling the more they wandered around this deserted town, the crazier he'd get. He wanted to get. He wanted to get to the bottom of these nightmares and why Silent Hill haunted him. What was this town to him? Why did he feel such a deep connection to this orphanage and what the hell was this cult that the article was talking about? Was the man and elderly woman from his dream part of this said cult? He was starting to get a headache and this time it had nothing to do with the creatures lurking about outside.

“Hey, this filing cabinet is locked. I wonder what could be locked inside.” Hayate called from behind the counter.

Itachi made his way to where Hayate was. He knelt down next to the older man, staring at the lock. He pulled the keys from his pocket and filtered through them. He found two small keys on the ring that looked like they would fit the cabinet. He tried the bigger one of the two. It didn't fit in the lock. The smaller one did though and there was a soft click of the latch releasing. He pulled the key out and Hayate opened the drawer.

“It's a whole bunch of folders.” Hayate responded.

He grabbed the stack and placed them on the countertop. He closed the cabinet with his foot as he picked up the first folder off the stack. The tab read `Orphanage'. The next was the cult, followed by Prodigy, Priestess, and guardians. Hayate glanced at Itachi like he was supposed to understand what it all meant. Itachi just shrugged but grabbed the folder that said Prodigy. He flipped it open but it was empty except for a small piece of paper that read 43-24-03. He frowned. What was this? Itachi thought in confusion.

“It looks like a safe combination or something similar.” Kitty answered his silent question.

He frowned harder as the awkwardness set in again. It was almost like she was reading his thoughts and he didn't like that at all. He glanced at her but she wasn't watching him. Instead, she had reached for the folder with the word Priestess on it. She opened it and flipped through the papers. There seemed to only be three of them. Kitty stared at the pages, her lavender eyes taking in each document. Itachi wondered what was on those sheets to catch the girl's full attention.

“Wow.” Hayate spoke suddenly. “This cult has been around for about one hundred years. It started about the time of the whole Salem witch hunt.”

“That's crazy. I was convinced no one practiced such ridiculous religions.” Beth looked almost terrified to say the least.

“Do you think they set the orphanage on fire leaving Alessa in there on purpose?” Kitty looked almost pale at the words that left her mouth.

“Who knows? I don't see anything in here about Alessa. There is a little information about the cult, but not enough to give us any real leads.”

“Well, I have something that might boggle you.” Kitty responded. “This states, `Beware of the Priestess! She's the witch that will steal away the Prodigy's soul. We must not let her obtain it. If she does achieve her goal, all will be lost'.” Kitty looked up at both boys. “How can a Priestess be a witch?”

“Good question. I don't know. I'm convinced the people in this cult are insane so it's hard to tell.” Hayate answered with a shrug of his slim shoulders.

“No kidding. I agree with that.” Beth replied, pulling herself up onto the counter, so she could sit on the surface.

“I want to know about this Prodigy.” Itachi cut in, his dark eyes serious. “They almost make him out to be a godlike figure.”

“Yeah, they do.” Hayate glanced at Kitty. “What do you think?”

“Besides the fact that I don't like this religious group?” Sarcasm dripped from her voice. “I just hope this Prodigy fellow doesn't come waltzing in here. I don't want to see what will happen if this anonymous cult gets their blood stained hands on him. It sounds like some kind of Apocalypse.”

“That's what freaks me out the most.” Beth muttered.

Kitty glanced at her friend as she pulled out the next piece of paper under the first on from the folder. She placed it in the middle of the counter so all three of them could look at it. There was a very old picture of a girl with long black hair and violet eyes. She looked to be around the age of eight, maybe nine. There wasn't an exact age though but at the bottom of the photo was a name. Alessa Gillespie. Beth gasped as she jumped down off the counter coming to stand next to Kitty.

“She looks like you when you were a child, Kitty.” Beth spoke in a shaky voice as she stared down at the photo confused.

“That's what I thought too.” Kitty muttered. “Unfortunately, the writing is too faded to make out.”

“Do you think you're related to her?” Hayate asked.

“I wouldn't have the slightest idea. I don't keep up on my family tree and my mother doesn't talk much about her side of her family so I don't know much about them. I don't even know how my parents got together.” Kitty fell silent for a long moment then she looked straight at Itachi. “But my mother looks a lot like Alessa too but she has curly black hair and brown eyes.”

“It's a good possibility that you're related to this girl somehow.” Hayate responded as he picked up the other folder that was labeled `Guardians'.

“I'm sure we'll find out.” Itachi answered, flatly.

He folded up the paper with the combination on it, placing it in his back pocket. He figured it was best to keep it with him just in case they ran across the safe that needed the numbers. He had a feeling that what he wanted to know would be locked away inside. He would get down to the bottom of this even if it killed him. He just hoped things didn't get that serious. Hayate threw the folder back down onto the hard surface.

“Pages were too worn. All I could make out was the words,
`Prodigy has a male Guardian
Priestess has a female Guardian'
Besides that, the rest is unreadable.”

“I'm ten times more confused then before.” Beth mumbled as she slumped against the counter, defeated.

“It's like we got thrown into the middle of a nightmare.” Kitty replied letting out a sigh of irritation.

“Welcome to my world.” Itachi grumbled.

Everyone looked up at him but he ignored them. All he wanted was a nap. His whole body ached with exhaustion. He didn't know how much more he could take before he collapsed. He made his way to the front door and glanced about outside, but couldn't see much. He turned back to the silent group. They were following him closely with their eyes but waited for his orders. He pulled out the keys and held them up.

“Let's find some where safe to rest.” He commanded.

“Sounds good. Let's pack up.” Kitty took off the pack and they started going through things, grabbing what looked important. “Hungry?” Kitty called to Itachi as she passed out some bags of chips. “Might as well eat something so we have some strength against those things.” She informed.

He moved forward and took the offered food, sitting down on the couch. Kitty moved about the room as she popped a Doritos chip into her mouth, glancing at the portraits on the wall. She frowned at one of them when she caught sight of a church. She took the photo down, looking at it more closely. The first thing she noticed was the symbol that was on top of the chapel. She went white in the face as she glanced over at Itachi.

“You may want to come look at this.” She told him shakily.

Itachi raised his head and then to his feet as he took in Kitty's stunned expression. He moved over to her side. He glanced down at the picture. At first, he didn't understand her reaction, and then he saw it. The same symbol was on the necklace that he found earlier. Apparently, this was the sign of the cult but if it was why was it on the pendant that protected him from all the headaches he got from being to close to the monsters that plagued the town. He had a really bad feeling about this cult and he didn't like the symbol at all, but as long as it kept his migraines at bay, he would continue to wear it. He'd rather not deal with the head trauma.

“Interesting.” He mumbled. “I wonder what it signifies.”

“I don't know, but I don't like it.” He looked up at her when he heard her soft words. He hadn't even realized he had spoken aloud. “Do you think they're connected?”

“I'm pretty sure of it. I'm positive that we'll find out soon enough.” She nodded her understanding and put the portrait back on the wall.

“There's a revolver here but it's not loaded and I can't find any ammo for it.” Hayate called out.

“Let's take it. We might come across some.” Itachi answered as he caught sight of another flashlight out of the corner of his eyes. He went to the corner table where it was sitting and picked it up. He turned it on and hit it a few times against his palm until it flickered on. “Now, let's get the hell out of here and find some place to rest.” Itachi demanded.

“Sounds good to me.” Hayate sighed out, handing the gun to Kitty to put in her backpack.

“Okay, we're set. Beth?” Kitty glanced at her friend, who nodded in return. “Then let's do this.” Kitty smiled enthusiastically.

“You think she was going to an amusement park.” Hayate chuckled.

“That's Kitty for you.” Beth answered with a wink.

TBC…

Kitty- Wow, I'm so deliriously tired and I still managed to get this up. Anyway, I'm really happy with the way this chapter played out. It really starts to get the main plotline rolling and that makes me happy. There was a lot of foreshadowing and that's one thing I'm horrible at. So I'm hoping that it was subtle foreshadowing, I wouldn't want to give away all my secrets yet, or have my readers already predicting what is going to happen in the future. I want it to be a surprise. Tee Hee. So R&R and tell me what you guys think. Ja Ne!
