Naruto Fan Fiction ❯ Return ❯ Wake up ( Chapter 1 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]

Sasuke looked over at the lifeless body of his older brother. He had spent most his life chasing after Itachi bent on revenge; this had been the man that had, in his eyes, ruined his life. And now he had managed to complete his mission and kill his brother. He was finally at peace with the world and was now ready to let go of life to join his family once more.

The fight had taken everything out of him, he would soon die of loss of blood or something to that effect so he waited for death to take him. He stared out across the landscape that he and his brother had destroyed in their final battle. The sun blazed down and he could hear birds in the distance. As his eyes closed his thoughts wondered back to Kanoha and the people he had left behind. His mind dwelled on a certain blond ninja who had stolen a small piece of his heart. He was the only person Sasuke had ever had any kind of connection with. Sasuke hadn't even been that close to the bubble gum haired girl in his team. It felt odd but he suddenly wanted to see the annoying ninja one last time.

He turned to look at Itachi's lifeless face again, not quite believing that it was finally over. His brother's eyes had glazed over but were still wide so you could see the amazing red eyes that held the symbol of the family's power. Suddenly Itachi reached out a bloody hand, this couldn't be happening, he was dead, that was the face of a dead person. But still he was reaching out to him, the dead man's lips moving as if he was trying to say something to his younger brother, but whatever it was Sasuke never found out.

He was suddenly sitting bolt upright in his bed. It took him a minute to realise he was screaming. The door to his room was flung open and Naruto came running through it. He jumped on the bed beside the screaming teen, holding and trying to sooth him.

`Shhh Sasuke, it's ok, it was just a dream. You're ok. Shhh.' He rubbed his friends back and after repeating this sentence a couple of times managed to get him to stop screaming.

Naruto had been living with Sasuke for the last six months ever since he had left isolation. To make sure that he wasn't a risk to the village Sasuke was being put through a series of rehabilitation tests, the last one was to live in the real world and Naruto had agreed to keep an eye on him. The blond had noticed that from time to time his friend would have trouble sleeping or on extreme occasions would wake just as he had tonight. Each time he would comfort his old friend but would never be told the reason. He let it go, sure that one day Sasuke would let him in.

They sat for a minute while Naruto continued to rock Sasuke. When he was feeling more himself Sasuke pushed against the other in a signal to get off him. The blond immediately let go knowing that he would be ok now. Naruto left the room in silence returning a moment later with a glass of water which he left on the side. He was about to leave the room when he turned and looked at the raven hair boy who was already trying to get back to sleep. He would have said something but didn't want to disturbed the exhausted boy. After a moment Naruto left the room carefully closing the door.

Sasuke hated days like this, he hated the feel of helplessness and the fact that Naruto had to see him like that. Before he had always been a proud solitary being, relying on no one, but ever since he had returned to the village he'd had nightmares about his brother not really dying and just tricking him so he could get Sasuke out the way in order to take Naruto. At first he had always woken from the dream in a panic but he was getting better at controlling the screams. He despised himself when he had to rely on Naruto. His tanned companion had been so kind to him when he had returned home. Others would look at him as if he was dirt on the bottom of their shoe and most the people who had called him friend had turned their backs on him. Even Sakura who had claimed to love him could not bear being left alone with him. Only Naruto had stuck by him. Even when he had tried to shut himself down and pushed Naruto away, the annoying blond had forced him to keep going.
Sasuke rolled over and forced himself to go back to sleep. Tomorrow was a big day; the Hokage had finally agreed that he could go back to training and doing missions with his team. Naruto had been very excited when he had heard the news but Sasuke had not been pleased. The dirty looks and the whispering behind his back had gotten so bad that he no longer wanted to go outside. Not even his Uchiha pride was enough to overcome what the other villagers thought of him. Every time he left the house he felt like a walking target.

He fell into a dreamless sleep and didn't wake until the sun streamed through his window.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~
Naruto had been so excited about today he had woken extra early to make sure everything was ready. He had only been on two or three missions since living with Sasuke and every time he spent the whole time worrying if Sasuke was alright at home by himself. It would be nice to get back to their old routine.
The excited blond rushed Sasuke through breakfast and forced him out the house before he really knew what was going on.
Naruto strode down the road, happy that he could go back to training and missions. Memories of old missions came flooding back, the fights they'd have over the little things, the games they would play. He knew they were too old for the jokes they had pulled on each other before but it still felt like a second chance.
Sasuke walked behind his overly happy friend, head down trying not to be noticed. He could see the pointing and hear the whispered insults from other village members. He couldn't see why they still hated him, but apparently they did. He tried to just ignore everyone and focused his attention on getting to their destination.
Ten minutes later and the two reached their destination. They found Sakura sitting on the side of the old wooden bridge talking to Sai. They abruptly stopped talking as the boys arrived. Sasuke didn't have to be a rocket scientist to know what they were talking about.
`You guys are early.' Naruto beamed at them; in fact Sasuke had noticed that he hadn't stopped smiling since they'd woken up. `To tell you the truth I hadn't expected to see you, but I'm happy the team is together again.'
`The Hokage said we had to babysit the little sissy and help him recuperate in training before we could go on separate missions again.' Sai beamed as he insulted his new team member.
`Sai.' Sakura lightly scolded him, but both Naruto and Sasuke noticed she wasn't defending her old crush like she once had.
A fight probably would have broken out but Kakashi chose that exact moment to appear form nowhere. He beamed down on his old team who had grown so much; even Naruto seemed to have matured.
The four younger team members stared at their group leader.
`Kakashi?' Sakura curiously looked at her old teacher. `What are you doing here?'
`We'll Sakura I am the head of this team.'
`Yeah, but you never arrive on time, you're always off getting lost on the path of life.' Her team mates agreed by violently nodding.
`Am I not allowed to arrive on time to meet my favourite team of juvenile delinquents on our first day of training.'
`Kakashi don't treat us like kids, you can't talk down to us anymore.' Sasuke calmly told his former teacher.
`Quite right Sasuke, you are now all young adults.'
`You know none of you have to be here. I'm quite happy training with just Naruto.'
`Told you Naruto.' They all looked round at the beaming face of Sai. `I told you he was a homo.'
`Sai!' the bubble gum haired girl screamed as she threw him into a near by wall. Sasuke giggled. `What's so funny?' she scowled at he team mate.
`Nothing, just brings back memories.' He smiled at her and she blushed.
`Once you've stopped flirting can we start training?' Kakashi suddenly seemed angry, though what over none of them could tell. `For are first session we'll do some simple sparing, nothing to much but it'll get you back into the swing of things. Pair up and find a clear space to do this once your finished return here and report to me.'
`Are you sending us off so you can just read one of your perverted books.' The whiskered boy asked suspiciously. At that Sakura huffed grabbed Sai's arm and marched off in the other direction. Kakashi just chuckled to himself.
`Looks like that leaves you and me.' Naruto said as he turned his beaming face to his remaining team mate. `s'been a while, think you're up to it, I'm a lot stronger now.'
`Your stronger then when I beat you up at the hospital after I woke up?' Sasuke raised an eyebrow.
`That was an unfair fight, you'd just woken up, I couldn't hit an ill person.'
`What ever you say.' And with that Sasuke walked off into the woods closely followed by his tanned companion.
As soon as Naruto entered the Small clearing Sasuke had brought him to, the tanned teen found himself bombarded with all kinds of attacks. Some basic, some difficult. Sasuke through a variety of weapons at him. Only giving Naruto a couple of chances to get offensive hits in before he was defending himself again.
Twenty minutes passed and Sasuke didn't let up. Naruto had hardly been able to touch his opponent, he had no idea how he was doing it but he was moving faster then ever before. Throwing an assortment of weapons that Naruto hardly missed. A couple of times he was in danger of loosing an ear. He was worried that if his opponent didn't stop he would use up to much chakra and damage what progress he had made.
`Sasuke wait, stop.'
`What is it dobe, tired already.' Sasuke through another star as he escaped into the tops of the trees.
`Wait, you'll tier...' but he was cut off mid sentence as he was sent flying into a nearby tree. Smacking his head on the hard trunk, the blond new that he would be in for a hell of a headache later, but right now he had to end this fight before his recovering teammate used too much chakra.
He hid himself amongst the leaves of one of the trees surveying the small area trying to catch a glimpse of his raven haired opponent, looking for any sign of where he could be hiding. Across the clearing a bush gave a small shiver as if someone had moved a clump of leaves so they could see out.
Sasuke waited to see if the dobe would fall for such an obvious trap. In the past Naruto would have pounced on it straight away without thinking of what it really could be, but know he seemed to be more careful, for a minute the pale faced boy thought his old rival had grown wiser, then he saw the blond sneaking through the undergrowth towards the bush he had shook. He was so predictable Sasuke wonted to laugh but new his cover would be blown if he made even the slightest move.
Just as Naruto reached the bush Sasuke pounced springing from his hiding place and flattening his blond friend. As the two boys hit the ground there was a lowed popping, a puff of smoke and he was gone.
Crap Sasuke thought It was a clone, he's getting better, I didn't see that one coming. Or is it that I'm getting slower.
He didn't have time to consider that because only a few seconds after he landed he found a heavy body pinning him to the spot of impact. Instinctively he thrust his hips up throwing the other off of him. He took the second of confusion to gain control. forcing the smaller teens hands above his head, pinning the wrists to the ground with one hand and holding a knife under his throat.
`Got ya.' He grinned in triumph. The blond beneath him began to squirm.
`Get off.' But he didn't want to get off.'
`Not until you admit I'm better than you.'
`Fine, for the time being your ok. Now move.'
`No.' Suddenly Sasuke wasn't feeling so good, the world was slightly spinning. He knew this feeling but he was sure he hadn't used up that much chakra.
Naruto panicked as he was trapped beneath the lifeless body of his best friend. He tried moving him but the way Sasuke had pinned him meant it was hard to move his body. All he could do was call for help. He was so embarrassed.
`See I told you,' The cheerful voice of Sai came to the blonds ears, `Sasuke's gay for Naruto.'
`SAI!' came the roar from Sakura and then a crunch as Sai made contact with a tree.
The next thing Naruto knew was Sasuke was being lifted off him and what Naruto assumed was the smiling face of Kakashi appeared.
`You ok?'
`Fine.' He told the spiky haired man as he got to his feet. `Thanks, I'll take him home now.' He moved to take Sasuke from his sensei's arms but Kakashi moved back.
`Naruto you need to take him to the hospital.'
`What? Why? There's nothing wrong with him, he just fainted, we all do it.'
`Sasuke should be able to battle for hours without tiring. This shouldn't of happend.'
`He'll be fine.'
`You cant decide that. I know that he's your friend and you want to do what he would want but we have to do what's best for him.'
`I can take care of him.'
`No ones doubting that, just let them check him over. `
`Let them have a look at him.' Sakura had rested a comforting hand on the blonds shoulder to show her support. He looked at her and nodded, knowing he wouldn't get his way anyway.
Team 7 made their way to the hospital, Naruto carrying Sasuke's lifeless body on his back. The blond had never noticed how heavy an unconscious person could be but he was happy he could help his friend.
At the hospital they were forced to wait outside in the corridor while Sasuke was checked over. Even though the blond ninja almost forced the medic Nin to let him stay he was forced to wait with the rest of the team. He took to pacing up and down the corridor outside Sasuke's room, like some unofficial guard. Kakashi leant up against the wall and watched the blond with a curious look in his unhidden eye.
`Naruto Stop pacing, your making Sakura nervous.'
`Why did you make me bring him here?' The blond snarled at his sensei as he stopped his pacing. `I can look after him.'
`It's just a precaution, he's not supposed to faint like that, and we need to know why it happened.'
`We knew this was likely to happen on the first training session, it doesn't mean he had to come here.'
`But not after the first exercise. We should have been able to train a lot longer before his body gave out. What's the real reason your upset?'
`He doesn't like others looking at his lover.' Sai grinned as he butted into the conversation.
`What...No...I...I...' The blond began to stutter.
`SAI Shut it.' Sai had to dodge behind the still stuttering blond as their last team mate tried to behead him with her fist.
`Naruto don't worry, he's being well looked after and no one is doubting that you can take care of him.' The Copy ninja smiled at his little team who had not changed much since they had first met.
`Pff, Like I care, who'd wana look after him.' Naruto tried to brush off Sai's earlier comment. That was until they heard the scream from the other room. Before anyone could register what was going on Naruto had burst into the hospital room he had only minutes ago been thrown out of.
Sasuke was sitting bolt upright in his bed screaming his lungs out as the doctors stood back from him a look of shock on their faces.
`Move.' The blond shouted at them, and pushed his way to the side of the bed. Jumping on to the bed he grabbed his raven haired friend and began to rock him as he hushed him and whispered into his hair, `It's ok, you're safe now, Shhh, it's all ok.' Sasuke slowly opened his eyes and stopped screaming He looked up as Naruto let him go and got off the small hospital bed.
`Thanks.'
`It's ok.' The blond scratched the back of his neck nervously. It was the first time anyone had seen this, he hadn't even told the others that Sasuke was getting these attacks. `How you feeling?'
`A bit stiff but ok, it's been a while since I've had the chance to do any exercise like that. And I still beat you.' He slyly grinned at his best friend.
`Pinning me down because you collapsed does not count as beating me.' Naruto joked back.
`Naruto,' Kakashi's voiced sounded stern as he moved to stand opposite to Naruto on Sasuke's other side, `How long has this been going on.'
`What?' The blonds face was suddenly flushed.
`Sasuke waking up screaming, it looks like your very used to dealing with it.'
`A while.'
`And we weren't aware of it because?' Naruto wondered how he could do angry threw that mask.
`It's cause he didn't want anyone to no his precious boyfriend was having bed wetting nightmares.'
`Seriously Sai do you like your face.' The pink haired ninja growled out as she stood in the door way.
`Naruto answer me.'
`Umm...Well...you see...'
`I told him not to.' Sasuke cut in as he lay back in the uncomfortable hospital bed. `I'm already a big enough topic of gossip around the village, I didn't want this added to it, so I forced Naruto to say nothing.' The lie eased its way out of Sasuke's mouth so easily, Naruto was just trying to keep his face from showing the surprise at this story. The blond had always envied that talent, no matter what it was Sasuke could make anything sound believable.
`I'm still going to have to tell the Hokage what you did Naruto.'
`NO, please don't tell old lady Tsunade, She'll Kill me.'
`You should have thought about that.'
`Seriously Kakashi it wasn't his fault.'
`That's not the point,' Sakura shouted out, she still hadn't moved into the room as if it was some way infected, `What if it's really important. Naruto has a duty to you, he promised to keep you safe.'
`You mean he has a duty to the village, and he promised to protect the village. From Me.' He gave the bubblegum haired girl a disgusted look, he knew it would be different coming back but he had never thought that Sakura would turn away from him.
`NO, Sasuke that's not what I meant. I don't think that at all.'
`Then why are you still standing in the door way.' The other three stood watching as Sakura realised That indeed she was still in the door way.
`I...I...I didn't want to crowed you. Look,' she stepped into the room but kept herself tucked against the far wall, `see I'm in the room now.'
`Forget it.' The raven hair boy turned in his bed so he couldn't see his old stalker, and so the others couldn't see the pain that had seeped into his normally cool face. The only person that could see this was Naruto and he ached to reach out and comfort his friend but he knew Sasuke would take the comfort as a sign of his own weakness so the blond restrained himself.
`Sai, Sakura, look after Sasuke. Me and Naruto are going to find the Hokage.' Kakashi signalled for the blond ninja to follow him. With his head slumped down Naruto followed his sensei out of the room.
The two made it half way down the corridor before a crowd of medi ninjas surrounded by Anbu black opps forced them against the wall. There was lots of shouting and three beds being pulled along. Naruto tried to pier threw the crowed but it was too thick. At the back of the large group a very familiar ninja was carrying a large sack.
`Oi, Bushy brow.' The green covered ninja stopped to talk to them. `What's going on?'
`You don't know?'
`If I knew I wouldn't be asking you would I.'
`Terrible news. We were sent to collect Gaara, the sand villages Kazekage.'
`Why? What happened?' fear suddenly run threw the blond. Gaara had been a close friend for the past few years. Once the sand ninja had worked threw some of his darker problems, the two outcasts had become close. It turned out he wasn't that bad after all, and when you worked on him he was actually fun.
`The sand village counsel rose up against him, saying he was to dangerous to lead the village. Non of the people thought that way but they got the other Ninjas on their side and he was attaked. He's been badly injured though were not sure how it happened yet. His siblings are also in critical condition, they used the last of their strength getting him out of the village.'
`You cant be serious, that's impossible.'
`look I have to go, but I'll let you know of any changes.'
`Thanks bushy brow, see you later.' And with that the green ninja was gone. he couldn't quite believe what he had just heard. Gaara was invincible, very few people had won a fight against him, and only one person had come anywhere close to killing him.
`Come on you.' Kakashi signalled for his former student to follow him as they continued their journey down the corridor.
They didn't travel three meters before said Hokage was seen rushing towards them. Her hair was flapping behind her and the expression on her face sent nurses running back into the rooms they had just left. When she saw them she stopped and gave them an unfriendly look.
`what are you two doing here?'
`Lady Hokage, Naruto has something that he feels is important to share with you.'
`Well it better be quick, I have three patients who are in critical condition. So I'm in a hurry.'
`Well if you're in a hurry then I'll tell you later. It doesn't...' Kakashi hit the back of the head to warn him, which made the Hokage smile. `The thing is, well... Sasuke's been getting these dreams and he wakes up screaming.'
`I see, and how long has this been going on for?' the unfriendly look was back.
`Since he's been living with me.' The blond rubbed the back of his neck nervously not sure how the old lady would react.
`I thought that this was what I asked you to report on. It seems you have let me down.'
`Its not that I just...I just...'
`What? Spit it out.'
`I can handle it. He's my friend and I can handle whatever he throws at me.'
`Don't you realise this could mean there's something wrong with his mental health.'
`But he's always been mental.'
`That's not what I meant and you know it. If I had time to deal with you I would, right now I have a few people depending on me. So Kakashi would you keep a closer eye on them, and I will call for the two of you when I'm free.' And she was once again storming off.
I hope you liked the first chapter, this is my first fan fiction to upload so I am a bit nervous, if you'd like to comment I'd love to hear them (even if you weren't to impressed) and I hope it was easy to read. Thanks.
