Deep in the woods, with vines creeping majesticly around it's old frame, stood a house, small, yet sturdy non the less. Inside, by a crackling fire, sat a young woman, her large stomach heavy with child. She looked up offhandedly as she felt a slight rumble. Sighing, she returned to warming her hands in the fire, her expression calm and serene. She wore simple clothes, a white robe with an off-white tie, and her feet were bare. This could be because of the fact that she rarely ventured outside of the hut, in her condition, getting up was more trouble that it was worth, plus, she would be scolded within an inch of her life if she did chose to wander around the forest, yet another thing she disliked. Quiet and likeable by nature, she wore the air of motherhood just as the higher class wore expensive clothes, it radiated off of her, and everyone could see it.
Her eyes flitted up as the door creaked open, and a man with long, spiky white hair walked in. Shutting the door quickly to keep in the warmth, as the woman was in no condition to catch cold, he glanced at her. "Keeping warm?" he questioned in a deep voice, setting down a few bags that he'd carried under his arm.
The woman's cherry pink lips turned up in a shy smile, and she nodded, "yes, thank you." Raking a strand of glittering black hair behind her ear, she prodded, "What's in the bags?"
The man handed one small bag to the woman, "here, I got this for you."
Her eyes widened and her mouth formed the perfect 'o' shape as she dipped her hand demurely into the bag, pulling out a packet of tea mix. "Tea...? I'm sorry sensei, but you know I'm not fond of tea..." Her tanned cheeks turned an amusing shade of red as she dropped the packet back down, setting the bag on the floor.
The man turned his attention away from the stew he had begun making over the fire, and looked her in the eyes, "I know that, but you need the extra weight. Look at you, you're thin as a bone! You were tiny to begin with, and you need the weight now more than ever. Trust me, it'll help."
She chewed her lower lip, "But...Jiraiya, I hardly see how it will help me gain weight..." Jiraiya fixed her with a well meaning glare, "that's not it's primary function. It calms the chakra system, and helps sooth sore muscles. I also got teas that act as painkillers, and sleep aids."
Nodding, the woman smiled, "Thank you." Jiraiya shrugged as though he didn't care, and returned to cooking the stew, not looking at the woman.
"So...Jiraiya, when is Toku coming?"
"He's the yondaime Aza-san, he's busy right now. A meeting with the elders. He told me he'd be here by tonight though."
"Ah...I see..."
The white haired man poured a large helping of the stew into a wooden bowl, and handed it to Aza. "Here, eat this."
Aza nodded, and accepted the bowl with as much grace as her shaking hands would allow. "Aza, what's wrong?" Aza's eyes widened at Jiraiya's sudden questioning, and then she blinked, as though surprised by his presence. "Oh, um, n-nothing. thank you." She hesitantly placed the spoonful of stew into her mouth, grimacing. "Actually Jiraiya...I'm...not very hungry."
Jiraiya quirked an eyebrow, "Are you kidding me? all you've done for the past nine months is eat!"
Aza's cheeks flarred red as she bowed her head down. "I-I'm just not hungry t-tonight..."
"What's wrong?"
Aza turned her head upwards to steal a glance at her old teacher and cringed. He knew when she lied, and he knew now. She laughed nervously, laying both hands against her stomach, "weeellll....I um...think I may be...in labour."
Jiraiya dropped his bowl, eyes wide, "Y-you mean, n-now?!"
She rolled her eyes upward, and placed her pointer finger on her chin, "Nope, I mean tomorrow, of course I mean now," she laughed at the end, clarifying that she'd meant nothing harmful by her little jibe.
Jiraiya stood, "Y-yes well, we'd uh...better fix that."
"you have NO clue what to do, do you?"
Jiraiya shook his head, "Not a one."
Aza ushered Jiraiya over with a wave of her hand. Once he'd reached her, she grabbed his arm and demanded shyly, "Help me up." Jiraiya hoisted Aza up as demanded, and put an arm around her shoulder, guiding her into a small room connected to the main room.
He noticed how her shoulders trembled, and glanced down. Her face was covered in a light sheen of sweat, and her lips were drawn together painfully. "Set me down on the cot." She demanded, pointing to her bed, "I'll instruct you on what to do."
Jiraiya paled, "M-me? why me?"
Aza shot him and offhanded, decidedly evil, glare and muttered dryly, "Because you're the one that taught my DARLING Toku to be such a pervert, henceforth, you must be punished."
Jiraiya groaned, "But Aza-"
"Ahahah, I don't want to hear anything from you unless it's 'it's a boy' or 'it's a girl', do you understand?"
Jiraiya nodded, feeling that Aza would be a stern, loving, mother. "Yes ma'am."
As Aza settled onto the cot, the door flew open in the main room, and Jiraiy tensed, ready to fight any intruders. Seconds later, a silver headed boy poked his head into the room, almost doing a double take. "Um...Jiraiya-sama?" As he spoke, he watched Aza, who was trying to recall where she'd seen the kid before. "Yes Kakashi?" Kakashi straightened, and peeled his stare away from Aza, who now realized he was a student of Toku's. "The Yondaime sent me to retrieve y-" the whole cabin shook, and Aza screamed, grabbing Jiraiya's sleeve. "What was that," she asked in shock, glancing around. Kakashi's young eyes darkened, "The kyuubi."
Aza paled, her mouth dry, "the nine tailed fox...is attacking?" Kakashi nodded, "Yondaime-sama is out fighting it, and sent me to retrieve Jiraiya-sama. But we must hurry. He's not doing very well." Jiraiya ran a hand through his hair, looking at Aza who was on the verge of tears, hands knotted into fists, and sighed. "Alright, let's go."
"You can't just leave me here!" Aza screeched, trying in vain to stand.
Jiraiya nodded, "I don't intend to." He scooped Aza up carefully, drapping a blanket over her, and flung open the door. Kakashi followed, slightly baffled at the woman's presence. Kakashi didn't have long to ponder, as a large tree came barreling toward him and Jiraiya, knocked over by a great swing of Kyuubi's tail. He heard Jiraiya curse, and the next minute, all was silent, save for the rampaging booms of kyuubi's tirade. "Jiraiya-sama..." he whispered, looking around for the fallen ninja.
A whimper to his left caught his attention, and he turned in time to see Jiraiya pushing his way out of the forest wreckage, Aza clinging firmly to his chest. "Jiraiyaaaaaaa!" she wailed, crying into his chest, as he hugged her. "It's okay Aza, we'll get you some help." Aza nodded, burying her face in the crook of his arm, and wailed pathetically, her whole body shaking with fear.
At length, the three reached the village, where families hid in terror of the legendary beast. "Kakashi!" Jiraiya called, "Where is the healer?"
Kakashi led them to a building, and guided them to the appropriate room. Opening the door, he pointed inside, then took off. Aza whimpered, "J-Jiraiya...I want Toku..."
Jiraiya shifted Aza to get a better hold on her as he stepped inside, "I know Aza, but he's needed right now."
Aza wailed pitifully, "Jiraiya! It hurts!"
The old toad sage sighed, calling out to the healer, "Tsunade! Oi, Tsunade, get out here!"
A buxom woman with blonde hair emerged from the back room, arms and body covered in blood, and yelled, "What do you want, pervert?" Jiraiya jerked his head downwards, toward Aza, who was cringing and writhing in pain.
Tsunade blinked, "Oh wow, come with me."
She led them into another room, where men and women lay around them, some not moving, and others most definitely dead.
"Set her here." Tsunade commanded, indicating a cot that was only slightly bloody.
Kneeling, Jiraiya lay Aza on the cot, whiping a strand of ebony hair away from her pale face. "It's okay Aza, Toku will be fine..."
Aza nodded, "I hope so Jiraiya...I hope so..."
