Sakura and Lee were sitting under the largest tree in the training grounds, watching Neji and
Saiai spar. Sakura marvelled at how synchronized the two had become in less than a month. They
both had become faster. Neither fighter could land a hit on the other, and it seemed they had
confined themselves to seeing how fast and synchronized they could fight.
The two under the tree took in the wondrous sight of their two friends battling. Hair twirled
around bodies, silver eyes glinted in the sun, and long limbs lashed out, searching for something
solid. It was truly a beautiful sight. Their matching movements gave the appearance of a
spectacular, yet dangerous dance.
Sakura smiled to herself, thinking also of the relationship the two fighters had developed during
the length of the month. They had become very close with each other, and one was rarely seen
without the other. Sakura knew that Neji was protectively attached to Saiai, even though he
would never openly admit it, and had a feeling that Saiai felt the same way.
`Would you like to join them in one final spar?' Lee asked Sakura, knocking her out of her
thoughts. She glanced at him, and smirked impishly. What better way to test their readiness than
to attack without warning?
They bolted toward the two in the clearing unannounced, hoping to catch them off guard, but that
was not to be the case. Neji and Saiai backed into each other, facing opposite ways, completely
covering all possible attacks from the ground. Lee took Neji as an opponent, and Sakura jumped
in front of Saiai. Both opponents attempted to overwhelm the partners with attacks, but Neji
countered every move from Lee, and Saiai was too fast for Sakura.
Lee and Sakura felt themselves getting exhausted with their fruitless efforts, so they opted to try
a different tactic: to separate the pair and get them away from their near-perfect defence. They
closed in on the pair and attempted to attack the opposite partner. As they closed in, Lee saw a
devilish grin overcome Neji's face at the same moment Sakura saw a similar smile wash over
Saiai's face. Saiai turned and ducked to her left, away from Sakura and towards Lee; Neji rolled
over Saiai's back, away from Lee and towards Sakura. The move was quick, totally flawless, and
something that neither Lee nor Sakura had seen before. It stunned them long enough for Neji and
Saiai to take advantage of it, and unleashed a flurry of attacks on their new opponents. Sakura
was sent flying by a palm to the chin from Neji, and Lee was knocked to the ground by a blow to
the stomach from Saiai.
`Ugh... where do you learn that move from?' Lee asked, rubbing his abdomen as Saiai reached a
hand down to help him up.
Small smile overpowering the evil grin that had previously inhabited the young woman's face,
Saiai replied, `A ninja never reveals the tricks of their trade.'
`Uncle Hiashi showed it to us,' Neji said, joining the group, with Sakura, rubbing her chin,
following closely behind.
`Well, that is one awesome move,' Lee said. Looking at the setting sun, he stretched his well-
muscled body and threw an arm around Sakura. `Well, we have to go. Sakura's parents invited us
for dinner, and I would rather not anger my Cherry Blossom's father.'
They exchanged their goodbyes until the next morning, and went their separate ways. As soon as
Lee and Sakura turned the corner, Neji grabbed Saiai's elbow and gently pulled her in the
opposite direction. `I have something to show you.'
`Oh? What is it?' she asked as she followed Neji, wondering what he had up his sleeve. He had
surprised her repeatedly during the month they had spent together. Judging from his village-
mates' reaction to Neji playing host to an outsider, let alone a girl, he was far less social than she
had originally thought. He was -trying-, though, and that's all that mattered.
About 15 days into the training, Neji had asked Hiashi to help him show Saiai exactly what the
Gentle Fist technique was. While the two men fought, she sat down and watched with complete
fascination. They were so fast and precise; no movement was a waste. As the sparring
progressed, she decided she liked the sound of chakra hitting chakra. The small sparks of chakra
their hands emitted were sort of pretty. After the session was done and Hiashi had excused
himself, Neji sat down and explained the correlation between his Byakugan and the Gentle Fist
technique. He activated his Byakugan to show her what it looked like, and she grimaced, asking
him if it hurt. He laughed, and assured her that he felt nothing. She had to repress a giant urge to
touch the veins that bulged out from his temples, because although they had become friends
(even though he wouldn't admit it out loud), she knew he was still a little apprehensive. After his
explanation, Hanabi tore out of the house and ambushed Neji from behind. He was fully
prepared for it, and obviously could've easily overpowered the young girl, but he let her win,
with a dramatic fall to the ground. Saiai's heart crumbled utterly and completely for Neji at this
point. She knew it was useless, but she couldn't help the way she felt.
She was snapped out of her daze when she almost tripped over the stairs of the Hokage's
mountain platform. Not remarking on her unusual lack of grace, Neji motioned for Saiai to go
first. She looked at him questioningly, but he only gave her his trademark smirk, which she had
come to love.
The moon was finally out as they made their ascent to the top of the platform. `Do you remember
how you had told me about the coloured glass windows and the chimes that you and your father
looked at every night?' A nod from Saiai, and Neji continued. `It may not equal the Moon
Village, but Konoha has something that only the night brings out, too.'
Saiai turned to look at Neji, but he only motioned for her to keep going. They reached the top of
the platform, and Saiai glanced up at the former Hokages. `Is this it?' Saiai asked.
`No, it's behind me,' Neji said from behind her. She turned, and Neji moved aside to let her see a
breathtaking sight. She walked over to the railing to get a better look at the scene.
The Leaf Village was lit up with its colourful lanterns to illuminate the way for those on the
ground. Its array of colours was spectacular on its own, but what was above the lights was even
better. The higher buildings, the one that the lights didn't touch, were bathed in a white-silver
blanket of moonlight. In between the absurdly bright coloured lights from the bottom and the
soft, shimmering light on top, was a mixture of the two. The harsh colours were softened by the
moonlight, and appeared to sway and move above the bustle of the crowd below like a smaller,
tamer version of the Northern Lights.
Saiai stared at this display, and didn't notice when Neji moved beside her to lean on the railing.
`Like it?' Neji asked, knowing the answer, but asking anyway.
`Oh my god, Neji, it's gorgeous,' Saiai breathed, still awestruck. She realized suddenly that she
was really going to miss this Village. She had become close with Sakura and Lee, Hinata and
Kiba, and especially Neji. She had grown accustomed to the Village, and had made friends here.
Her heart yearned for her sisters, but now it was conflicted with the possibility of a life in
Konohagakure. She hadn't realized that she had let her head fall until Neji spoke again.
`You know...' he said quietly, `once this is all over, you could bring your sisters here. I'd be more
than happy to give you guys a tour of the Village.' He couldn't explain it; he really didn't want to
see her go. He gave up his internal struggle with whether or not she was a friend to him (even
though he still wouldn't admit it out loud. Lee learned that the hard way), but there was now an
underlying feeling that was worming its way to the surface. He was somewhat disturbed by this
feeling, and fought with it tooth and nail.
`Really?' Saiai asked, brightening up. `You mean it?' When Neji nodded, Saiai flung her arms
around his neck in a huge hug. He stiffened up, and she retreated immediately.
`Oh, crap, Neji, I'm sorry, I didn't think,' Saiai spluttered, backing away.
`It's fine, Saiai, don't worry. It's just... hugs... aren't exactly something I get everyday,' Neji
assured her. When she slumped her shoulders, still completely embarrassed, he shook his head,
smirking slightly. `We should get back. Morning comes early on the first day of a mission.'
She nodded, and followed Neji with her perfunctory head-down stance. He mentally kicked
himself, just at that moment realizing how many chances he had to see her eyes, but didn't
because he was in the way. He silently cursed his height as the pair made their way to the
Hyuuga estate.
Once they reached the door, they simultaneously tensed for the impending impact that was
Hanabi. Tonight, she chose to tackle Saiai into a hug. The hug was a little tighter tonight, and
Saiai looked down to see what the trouble was. Instead of bright, happy silver eyes, she was met
with a troubled face that was almost never seen on the girl.
`What's wrong?' Saiai asked.
`Well... I'm really worried about you guys,' Hanabi replied. She looked from one face to another,
and hugged Saiai even more fierce than before. `This mission sounds really tough, and I don't
want you guys to get hurt.'
Neji smiled and knelt beside the girl. `Hanabi, have I ever not came back from a mission?' The
little girl shook her head. `Right. And do you think Saiai can't handle herself?' Another shake.
`And do you doubt that we won't protect each other?' Another shake, and the girl's face got
considerably brighter. `See? Nothing to worry about. We'll be back, and we'll be fine.'
The girl smiled briefly before her face fell again. `What is it, Hanabi?' Saiai asked, again.
`Well, you guys promised you would come back, and I trust you. But, Saiai, once this is all
finished, you won't be staying here anymore, right?'
`No, dear, I won't be staying here anymore,' Saiai replied, a little sadly.
`Will you come visit us?' the girl asked, a little hesitantly.
`Of course I will. And you know what? I'm going to bring my sisters, too. They'd love to see this
Village,' Saiai said with a wink. When Hanabi looked at Saiai as if this promise were too good to
be true, Saiai nodded. Hanabi tore off into her bedroom, fully satisfied, `good nights' streaming
from her mouth as she closed her door.
Neji stood up from his kneel and smirked when Saiai tried to stifle a yawn. `Tired?' he asked.
`Yeah, a bit,' she replied, chuckling a bit at the end of her yawn. `Beating Lee into the ground is
hard work, you know.'
He nodded. `I agree. Why don't you go to bed? I'm going to talk with Uncle Hiashi for a bit
beforehand.'
`Yeah, I think I'll do that. G'night,' Saiai said, waving a little as she turned and headed towards
the bedroom.
Neji walked into the kitchen and found Hiashi reading. Hiashi looked up at the new arrival and
nodded a greeting. `So, how did the training fare today?'
`Relatively well,' Neji explained. `Saiai's become amazingly fast, and she's hitting her opponents
with more precision...'
`But...?' Hiashi pressed, noticing his nephew's hesitance at the end of his sentence.
`I'm not entirely sure that she'll be able to face her uncle. Granted, he's a bastard and should be
put away for what he did, but still, it's family, and he did manage to hold her for ten months.'
`You're worried about her,' Hiashi said, not so much a question as a statement.
`You could say that,' Neji muttered.
Hiashi watched as Neji stood up to go to bed. `Neji, you have to put your trust in her. She's
struggled so far for her family and Village; I doubt that she's going to buckle under her uncle's
pressure.'
Neji bid his uncle goodnight, and turned to leave. As he reached his room, his uncle's voice
wafted to his ears from the kitchen: `Besides, she's got you, and whether you choose to believe it
or not, that counts far more now than her attachments to her uncle.'
Neji closed his door silently, Saiai already fast asleep on her side of the bed. The moonlight that
puddled around her formed a halo around her pale face. Neji's heart bottomed out at the sight.
She was beautiful, and that same feeling he felt earlier resurfaced, more insistent. He fought it
down, but found it was resisting him forcibly. Once he got it under control, he changed and
climbed into bed. He took off his head protector, but didn't bother turning his back to Saiai. She
had seen it, and had asked him about it. He had explained everything, and she listened
attentively. At the end, when all he received was a `huh', he felt immensely relieved. No idea
why, but he felt quite at ease after that.
He felt a little sad that she would leave after the mission was complete. Someone had taken the
time to get to know him, and him her. He didn't want that effort to go to waste, but she had a
Village to look after. He sighed, his internal lamentation raging inside his mind as he drifted off
to sleep, the moon bathing him in its silver light.
