Shizune and Anko had the same haunt.
They always saw each other there, on top of the Hokage monument, when they wanted some quiet.
They had started to expect the other one there, but they never talked.
Then one day, Anko had had a worse day than usual, and when she showed up at sunset, she two bottles of sake.
Shizune didn't usually drink, but that night, she an exception.
The next week, Shizune had had enough blood for three lifetimes, and brought four bottles to share.
They both began to bring drinks or occasionally food to share with the other.
Three weeks later, Shizune started making comparisons between them, out loud.
The last one she listed was this.
“We are… were… both the favored students of one of the legendary sennin.”
Anko nodded, and took another swig of her third bottle.
“We were,” she said, then turned to face Shizune, her nightly partner in solace.
“And we both loved our teachers, who discarded us.”
It was Shizune's turn to take a drink.
Anko finished off her last bottle of sake a few minutes later, and stared at it in silence for a few seconds.
Then she chucked it off the edge of the monument, feeling something she'd thought she'd lost a long lime ago: Hope.
Looking back at Shizune, she found her staring at the curve of her neck.
“I bet the list could go on. Let's go to my place and find out what else we have in common.”
After that night, they didn't need to go to the monument with sake for solace.
They went home together instead.
