“What is this?” the raven peered over the book in his hands at the bag dropped in front of him. Although his tone of voice lacked any interest in the matter whatsoever, his onyx eyes showed enough interest to make up for his blank expressions.
The blonde who had dropped the bag scoffed and placed on hand on his hip, the other one pointing an accusing finger at the stoic raven on the chair. “This,” he stressed the word, “is all the promises you failed to keep ever since that day we met at that fucking playground, Teme!”
The raven placed the book down on the coffee table before him and started to look at the bag merely to feed his curiosity. His eyebrows skyrocketed to his hairline when he read one of the numerous slip of papers from the bag.
“Naruto this is ridiculous! How could you possibly know the day, month, and year that I failed to keep these so called promises?”
Naruto flashed an almighty smirk towards his friend, pleased to have the supposed upper hand for once in their daily arguments. “That's because I have a top-notch memory, Sasuke.”
His almighty smirk was wiped off by Sasuke's next statement.
“You're such an idiot, Dobe.” Sasuke crumpled up the slip of paper and threw it at the nearest trashcan. The paper fell into the can effortlessly, which really didn't help to cool the flames of Naruto's predictable anger. “If that memory of yours is as good as you say it is then you would know that I told two days before that I had a family get together I couldn't get out of.”
The blonde scrunched his face up in irritation - mostly because he didn't want to admit that Sasuke was somewhat right - as he tried to dig through his memory for those words. Luck may have it that the raven had indeed told the crying blonde at the mere age of six that he couldn't meet him on Friday due to his family arrangements.
+Flashback+
Tears and snot dribbled down Naruto's face as the snow flakes danced around him and the scowling raven in front of him. It just wasn't fair! His first play date with another person and it had to be moved to Monday! Naruto didn't like this one bit and clung to Sasuke's shoulder in a desperate attempt to change his mind.
“Sasu, you promised!”
“Your snot's sort of disgusting, Ru.” Sasuke pushed Naruto off calmly, although he really just wanted to hug the crying boy in his arms and never let go. He hated seeing Naruto cried - although he did it all the time. But this time was different, he had made a promise to his brother Itachi and he couldn't go back on it now.
“You're such a meanie!” Naruto screamed, bending down to pick up a pile of snow and stuffing it in Sasuke's face. “You can't even be nice to me for five seconds!”
Sasuke scowled at the dripping wetness running down his face and staining his bangs. Alright, so Naruto was getting very annoying right now, but he could keep his cool long enough to keep things somewhat peaceful.
Sighing, Sasuke went for Naruto's hand and squeezed it softly. Naruto sniffled and looked up into his eyes with that hopeful expression he both loved and hated at the same time. He chewed on his bottom lip, going over whether or not he should act on impulse until Naruto acted for me.
Tiny arms slid around his waist, and blonde spikes tickled his neck and chin as Naruto buried his face inside Sasuke's neck. The two's body heat warmed them up on this chilly Thursday, sending every bit of rage out of Naruto and all the spouts of confusion from Sasuke.
The two stayed there like that, snowflakes dancing around them, until Sasuke was the first to pull back. He smiled softly and bumped their foreheads together lightly, “I'll see you Monday, Naruto.” He whispered his lips a few inches away from kissing Naruto's forehead before he turned around and dashed for home, leaving the speechless blonde alone in the snowy playground.
+End of Flashback+
The blonde scowled at the memory freshly imprinted in his mind. It was annoying how whenever he tried to upstage the raven, Sasuke would always be two steps ahead and mock him with how well he was able to pull the rug from under his feet. It sent Naruto into spasms of comical rage sometimes that could only be put out with curse words and a good punch to a wall. Still though, he was persistent in trying to regain the edge on this argument.
“So what of it? I still waited for you that day, Teme! I wasted five fucking hours freezing my ass off in the damn snow.”
Sasuke felt a very large vein pop at the blonde's stubbornness. When would he ever realize that there are some things in life you just don't have any control over, so you should just suck it up and live with them?
Sighing, Sasuke pinched the bridge of his nose and closed his eyes for a few seconds to allow the unnecessary anger that was building inside of him to flow out of his system. When he felt the flame fan out, the raven reopened his eyes to glare slits at the blonde.
“Dobe, I barely had the time to escape to the bathroom. Other forms of escape would have been completely useless.” Sasuke smirked at the comical look of defeat panned out on Naruto's face. “Besides, I wasn't the one who told you it was suddenly okay to wait in the snow for five hours.”
Naruto pouted and folded his arms across his chest defiantly. He hated it when Sasuke had to pick apart every single thing just to prove he was right about something. It pissed the blonde off to no end! Sasuke didn't understand a bloody thing in Naruto's mind about that day. The memory was fresh in his mind, along with all the sensations and feelings he had that day.
Sasuke would never know that Naruto had skipped breakfast that morning to meet the raven at the swing sets. All day he waited, shuffling his feet in the snow and watching the other little kids play with their families with friends, only to come out empty and with a horrible cold from sitting outside all day.
But, there were things that Naruto didn't know about that day either.
His frowned deepen as he folded his arms across his chest. "Whatever, Teme, Just pick up the next slip!"
Sasuke, who was the type of person who hated being told what to do, knew better than to get Naruto even more fired up because he didn't comply with his simple wishes. So merely crumpled up the paper he had, threw it out, and dug in for another one with a scowl marring his pale face.
"Broken Promise number 314," Sasuke read aloud. He didn't miss the sour grin on
Naruto's face as he read. "Just how many of these stupid slips do you have in there?"
"Shut up and read, Sasuke!"
Sasuke clicked his teeth but complied anyways. "Sasuke Uchiha promised Naruto
Uzumaki that they would to shopping, but failed to arrive at the mall on March
5th, 2011." the raven looked up at the blonde passively, "You have some shitty hand writing."
Naruto's grin transformed into a angered pout. He stomped over the smirking
Uchiha and ripped the slip out of his hands before placing his hands on his hips.
"Whatever, Uchiha, my handwriting is not the issue here!"
Sasuke cocked an onyx eyebrow, "Then what is the issue?"
Naruto grinned, "Well, Teme, since you were so busy fucking your girlfriend up the ass that day," Sasuke's scowl just sent the adrenaline pumping in Naruto's blood and he started to pace to move along with the energy. "I had to risk being publicly humiliated by walking the mall by myself without my best friend! Which means," he stopped in mid-pace to lean closer into the raven's face, "you have to take me shopping today!"
The raven curiously looked at the blonde, cocked eyebrow still raise proudly up high. His mind was still trying to process just what the hell Naruto was saying because he was more focused on his best friend's unique facial features.
In this light, Naruto's golden blonde hair shone brightly, some of those locks were even falling to frame his face nicely even though the blonde had argued he only got it cut last week. Then the raven's eyes skimmed to those morning sky blue eyes that he always found himself staring at longer than necessary. And finally, Naruto was the only person he ever knew with three whiskers scarring his cheeks. Till this day Sasuke still never knew the origin of those scars since Naruto was so reluctant to share.
Secrets were just swarming everywhere...
"Sasuke, su atención, por favor!" Naruto snapped in Spanish, bringing the raven out of his thoughts.
Sasuke scowled, "What?"
"Don't you fucking space out on me and then grow the balls to scowl, Teme!" Naruto stuck out his tongue childishly, something he did very often around the raven. "You're taking me shopping and leaving your girlfriend to actually think for herself today. Understood?"
"My girlfriend has the ability to think for herself, Naruto." the blonde just scoffed at the comment. "Also, I don't see how one fucking slip of paper is going to convince me to take you shopping."
The blonde grinned devilishly. He had expected the raven to he unwilling to his demands, but he always had a few aces up his sleeve to turn the tables in his favor. Still grinning, Naruto plopped down on the ground across the raven and placed the messenger bag in his lap. He rummaged around for a few seconds until he pulled a few slips he liked.
"Well, Sasu," Sasuke scowled deeply at the ridiculous pet name the blonde had endowed on him somewhere in their wonderful childhood. "We don't have to go shopping today! Forgive me for actually wanting to take you out of this godforsaken apartment to live a little!" he smirked at that ever-deepening scowl. Oh yes, he was most definitely striking the right nerves here. Or he could be quite possibly digging his own grave. "We can just sit here all day and go through the other 536 broken and failed promises you've never kept. Like this one!"
Sasuke squinted at the scribbled writing, blushing furiously when he read everything word for word. Oh good God! The blonde was seriously going for blackmail, here! If this was on one of the slips, Sasuke didn't want to think what else the other slips would say.
Gulping down the pride that was threatening to bubble out of his throat, Sasuke went for his keys on the dining table. "Fuck you, Uzumaki."
Naruto smirked, "Sorry, I don't fuck straight guys."
+Songbook+
Naruto entered the shop littered with books that towered like skyscrapers above him. The blonde inhaled the sweet smell of worn out and new pages just ready to be read. Contrary to belief, Naruto loved reading to the point he would literally pass out with a book in his hands Friday nights when he wasn't out partying. But of course, everyone always has a contradiction to themselves, and
Naruto was just one of those people where their whole life was based on contradictions.
Smiling, Naruto dragged his stoic friend through the store and towards the music section.
"Alrighty, Sasuke Uchiha, your mission, if you choose to accept it - you really have no choice in the say, really - is to find me a songbook.
Sasuke frowned as he looked at the wide expense of books bulging out of the bookcases. Did the blonde really expect him to find a songbook out of this whole mess?
"Oh, and it has to be relatively filled, and have at least twenty songs." Naruto nodded to himself, pulling book by book out and flipping through the pages. But none of the songs were catching his attention.
Sasuke was on the other side of the bookcase, pulling out a book to show to Naruto to only have it chucked back at along with a shake of the head. The raven scowled and went back to work.
Hours later, and the two had come up with nothing. They were sweating from the abnormally warm temperature of the bookstore. Books were opened and sprawled everywhere around Sasuke and Naruto as the two felt defeat sink deep in their veins.
"This is pointless," Sasuke grumbled, itching to whip out his cell phone to start a conversation with his girlfriend, only to take the thought back when he realized the conversation would be only five minutes full of one worded texts.
Well... At least she was good at sex.
Naruto wanted to give up and force Sasuke to drive him home. He had to get in a quick nap before he went off to work later tonight. 'But I still need that songbook.'
His tired eyes skimmed over the rows and rows of books before they landed on one with the word "Song" faded in gold letters. By instinct, Naruto started to crawl towards the book, ignoring the clueless look he was getting from Sasuke. He grabbed the book and brushed off the light coat of dust from the cover. His eyes lit up when he flipped through the book and found some songs that really interested him. Waving his hand, he called after Sasuke and soon enough the raven was next to him, peering over his shoulder.
"Found something?" he asked as he skimmed over the notes.
Naruto nodded excitedly and flipped to a random song. "Here, hum the notes and
I'll sing the song."
"Naruto, I am not going to-" but he was instantly shut up when he had the book shoved up in his face. Scowling, Sasuke took the book and started humming.
Naruto closed his eyes and allowed himself to get lost in the music. He let out a longing sigh and let the lyrics to flow out of him in a hushed whisper.
There's a gaping hole, it's so big
The pressure in my chest, the pressure in my chest
It won't let go, it won't let go
There's a gaping hole, it's so big
Make me believe
and give me a taste of what this could be
Make me believe
and trust me, we'll be there, we'll be there soon
Timing is everything we need
It won't let go, it won't let go
There's a gaping hole, it's so big
Make me believe
and give me a taste of what this could be
Make me believe
and trust me, we'll be there, we'll be there soon
Timing is everything we need
it is the only thing that's keeping us from leaving
And we promise to never, to never write
instead of selling my soul, I'm giving it away
instead of selling my soul, I'm giving it away
Make me believe
and give me a taste of what this could be
Make me believe
and trust me, we'll be there, we'll be there soon
I'm breathing,
God I hope I'm breathing
keep your hands on my chest and wait for a beat
I'll keep your trust in my arms and pain in my feet
I'm breathing,
God I hope I'm breathing
I'm breathing,
God I hope I'm breathing
Make me believe
and give me a taste of what this could be
Make me believe
Make me believe
and give me a taste of what this could be
Make me believe
and trust me we'll be there soon
And we promise to never, to never write
instead of selling my soul, I'm giving it away
instead of selling my soul, I'm giving it away
Make me believe
and give me a taste of what this could be
Make me believe
and trust me, we'll be there, we'll be there soon
I'm breathing,
God I hope I'm breathing
keep your hands on my chest and wait for a beat
I'll keep your trust in my arms and pain in my feet
I'm breathing,
God I hope I'm breathing
I'm breathing,
God I hope I'm breathing
Make me believe
and give me a taste of what this could be
Make me believe
Make me believe
and give me a taste of what this could be
Make me believe
and trust me we'll be there soon
Naruto reopened his eyes, a slight blush scarring his cheeks from the lack of air, and smiled towards the raven. If he wasn't sure before about taking the book before, there was no doubt in his mind now when he saw that peaceful look on Sasuke's face that he just wanted to tease him for.
It had felt really, really, good to sing that song. And he couldn't wait to flip through the book and find even more amazing songs. If just one song could make him feel a breathless adrenaline rush that singing something with beautiful lyrics could bring, he absolutely wanted to know what the rest were like.
Smirking, a habit he got from the raven, Naruto leaned in to grab the book, but not before placing a sloppy kiss on Sasuke's cheek.
Sasuke's eyes bugged open until slipping into a glare, "Naruto," he warned, but he couldn't hide the slight pink dusting his cheeks at the moment.
"Be happy it was the cheeks this time." Naruto replied cheekily. Standing up,
Naruto clutched the book in one hand and his book bag in the other one. "Let's buy the book!"
"This better be the right one, Naruto." Sasuke mumbled. He knew the blonde's shopping and spending habits like he knew the back of his hand. The item would be the cutest thing in the store but the minute it entered his house it stayed in the back or his closet never to he touched again.
"It is! It is!" Naruto waved his hand nonchalantly and pushed the raven towards the cashier. "Here, sir, I'd like to buy this book please."
"Oh?" the shopkeeper looked up from his book with the eye that wasn't covered by that mask of his. He smiled behind the fabric and set the book down to attend with his customers. "Found something you like?"
The blonde nodded enthusiastically in response.
"Then I'll ring this right up for you." the shopkeeper took the book and looked down only to notice the title. His left eye widened with shock before dimming down as a smile warmed on his face. 'An interesting choice,' he thought with a chuckle before handing the book in a plastic bag to Naruto.
"You know..." he started out nonchalantly before the two could leave, "Some people use music as a way to tell a story without the help of words sometimes. You just close your eyes and allow yourself to be whisked back into time and space, allowing the composers imagination to take you over." the shopkeeper opened his eyes and laughed, "You've picked an excellent book, there."
"Riiight," Naruto drawled, a little freaked out by the fact he had just gotten a lecture from a stranger. He grabbed Sasuke by the hand and dragged him towards the door while tossing a goodbye passed his shoulder.
'Brat,' the shopkeeper scoffed and made a grab for his book until a pair of tanned arms wrapped around his shoulders and squeezed.
"I heard you talking outside," the man behind him gave him a quick peck on the cheek. "I hope you treated the customers nicely, Kakashi."
"Maa," Kakashi returned the gesture, pulling down his mask to get a better taste of the skin. "I was nice enough, Iruka."
"Did they at least buy something?"
"They bought the book."
"They bought the book?" Iruka's eyes nearly bugged out of his head at the complete calmness in Kakashi's words. "And you didn't try to stop them?"
Kakashi shrugged, “Well it's not like I could tell them `No'.” he leaned back onto Iruka's chest, “The book was already out with the open with all the others. There wasn't really much we could do about it.”
“But what about the consequences, Kakashi?” Iruka had started a pace, back and forth, behind the counter, his mind trying hard not to dig up the horrible memories that book had brought upon, “You know what will happen once that book has been opened.”
“As do you,” Kakashi replied calmly. “And we both ended up just fine because of the same book you're currently worrying over.” He smiled crookedly and placed a simple kiss on Iruka's temple to prove his point.
The younger man sighed at the touch, his uneasy emotions wavering away very slowly by the second. He had almost forgotten about the wonderful ups that came with the book because of the horrible downs that followed along as well. But it's always the steep drops in life that test our strengths and willpower, isn't it?
For now, the two would silently watch the two boys and allow the music to take the lead in telling their new story.
