Sakura's P.O.V

Come Monday morning all of Konja High was buzzing about the Fall Dance. Girls were huddled in little groups, comparing shades of foundation and picking out dresses from magazines. Everywhere I turned, I witnessed a confession of some sort, and a proposal to go to the dance together.

I sighed. No one had asked me to go. Well, there was that one guy from Science class but I said no. There was also that random kid before classes this morning but I had no idea who he was. The person I really wanted to ask me was, of course, Sasuke.

Speaking of him, Sasuke had gotten more confessions the first two periods of school than I could count on both my hands and toes. Of course, (to my secret pleasure), he'd turned down all of them. But those fan girls just kept coming! In fact, another episode was playing out right now.

Naruto and I narrowed our eyes as another girl—this one busty with long black hair—batter her lashes at our very own Sasuke, waiting for a yes. But in fact, what she got was a no. She sobbed and ran off, and Sasuke frowned. “People are so annoying,” he muttered.

Naruto and I both continued to glare at him. “Annoying?” I demanded, “It's annoying to be LOVED by so many people?”

Now Sasuke shot me a look that made me shut my mouth. “They don't love me,” he said darkly. “They don't know me.”

“Ahahaha!” I attempted to save my butt. “Okay, yes Sasuke! You're right Sasuke!” I raised my hands in a gesture of please-stop-glaring-at-me.

I looked over at Naruto and noticed that he was particularly quiet today. “What's wrong, Naruto?” I teased. “Did Hinaaataa ask you to the Daaance? Hmmmm?”

He jumped, startled. “Huh? NO! I-I-I was just thinking a-about something…”

I raised my eyebrow, turning my head from one best friend to the other. These guys were acting super weird today!

“Okay, whatever. While you two sulk here, I'm gonna head over to Gym early and help coach with set-up.” I got up from the table purposefully. “Later.”

I was out of the cafeteria and down the hall when I heard rushing footsteps behind me. I turned, expecting some stranger, but it was Sasuke. He caught up to me and slowed into a walk like we'd been coming this way together all along. He shoved his hands into his pockets and sulked at the floor.

“Um…” Now I was really puzzled. We turned a corner to Athletics Gym. “What's up?”

Sasuke stopped walking, and I almost tripped over myself. I turned on my heel and raised my arms. “What is going on with you two today?! Am I missing something?!”

Sasuke breathed out like he was stressed-out. “Listen, Sakura. I have a favor to ask.”

I stopped ranting and stared up at him. “…What kind of favor?” It was amazing how I hid the Of course I'll help you with anything! from my voice.

Sasuke breathed out in frustration and finally met my stare. “The Dance. All these girls are really freaking me out.” He ran a hand through his hair like he did when he was frustrated. I just kept staring at him. “What I'm saying is, Can I say that I'm going with you?”

I heard what he was saying, but his sentences also went through the Sakura-processor in my brain. The Sakura processor cut out “Can I say that” and remodeled it to sound like “Can I go with you?”

“WHAT?!” I screamed.

Sasuke flinched. “Sorry! Are you already going with someone? It's just so that all these girls will leave me alone. I thought we were all going together, anyways.” He looked at me questioningly.

I sputtered. “Wh-wha-YES! I m-m-mean, yes? Yes! Yes we are going together! Uh…all of us!” I grabbed at my pink locks. “YES!”

Sasuke stared at me in awe for a while, and then grinned. He grabbed my hand without thinking about it. “Thank you Sakura! So I'll tell people I'm going with you, but it's really an obligation. Okay?” He was smiling so wide that it took a while for my heart to crack in half.

“O-o-o-o-o-” I couldn't spit out the word obligation, it hurt too much. I just stared at him, my mouth still forming the “O”.

Sasuke dropped my hand. “Okay, great.” He ran his hand through his hair again. “Let's go?”

I simply nodded like a dummy, and then followed him through the double doors of the gym. “Haruno, Uchiha!” Coach barked, “Get ready and help set up!”

We both nodded and hurried into the change room. I nodded at Sasuke solemnly and went into the little room with the stalls. Once in my corner stall, I let out a deep, disappointed breath and collapsed onto the bench. I poked at my purse with my foot, wondering why things had turned out like this. It really hurt to have Sasuke say we were going to the dance together, but that he didn't like me. He had no idea how I felt, but it was still saddening.

I was peeling off my shirt when I heard a knock on my stall. I sprung up in a panic and then flopped back down. “TAKEN!” I shrieked, hurrying with my gym uniform.

There was a laugh on the other side. “Calm down Sakura, it's me.”

I let out a relieved breath. “S-Sasuke!” I stood up and cracked the door open just enough to poke my head out. “What?”

Sasuke was already dressed in full uniform. He balanced his weight from one sneaker to the next, getting pumped up. “Are we going to play soccer today?” He tilted his head, waiting.

I couldn't get out of this, not when looking him straight in the face. Plus, I kind of missed our soccer games. I flashed him my best smile. “Of course!” I shut the door, pulled on my shorts, and then hurried out.

Sasuke smirked at me. “Great. Let's go.”

Ms. Ingram was away today, so that basically meant there was no poetry analysis for anyone. The supply teacher pulled out his copy of Old People's Weekly and perched himself in Ms. Ingram's giant teacher chair and muttered for us to work on other homework.

I began to construct a game of tic-tac-toe for us when another girl walked up to Sasuke purposefully. “Sasuke,” she chirped. “I was wondering if you had a date to the dance?”

Sasuke shot her a look. “Yeah.”

Pencils dropped and there was an audible gasp from the females in the room. The girl who had asked looked dumbfounded. “WHAT?! WHO? I head you rejected everyone so far!”

I suddenly froze. I had to stop Sasuke from saying it was me because I was going to get killed by these girls. Sasuke opened his mouth and I kicked him under the table. He gave me a weird look, still talking. “Sakura.”

Crap.

“Sakura?!” The girl looked at me and then back at Sasuke. “B-b-but!...!” Her eyes were bulging out and I felt invisible daggers hit my back. I slouched down in my seat and began to play tic-tac-toe by myself. The girl shook her head and retreated, but I knew I was done for.

Once she was out of earshot I turned my chair so that I was facing only Sasuke. “Don't say that anymore!” I hissed.

Sasuke looked honestly confused. “I thought you said it was okay—”

“It's not okay!” I tugged at my white skirt desperately. “Those girls that like you are going to get really mad at me!”

Sasuke looked over my shoulder and I think for the first time he noticed what was going on. He bit his lip and looked back at me. “Let's make this real,” he said.

I almost fell out of my chair. “….Wha…t?”

Sasuke was formulating a plan, I could see it in his eyes. “I'll really pick you up and we'll really go together. We'll really have a great time.”

Great. Everything was real now, except for our feelings. Well, except for Sasuke's feelings. Mine were totally real. I wanted to strangle myself for falling into this hopeless romance.

“Okay,” I said. I started packing my bag, which confused Sasuke.

“Where are you going?” he whispered.

“Home, no soccer today!” I replied. “This supply teacher isn't doing anything useful!” Okay, so the truth was, I wanted to go home and have myself a good, pitiful cry; but it's not like I was going to tell Sasuke that.

My plan fell apart when Sasuke, too, began to pack up his things. “What are you doing?!” I hissed. I need to go home and CRY!

“I'm going home with you,” Sasuke replied. “You need help with Science.”

“Thanks,” I said, but I couldn't help laughing. I felt more daggers in my back and shut up.

The teacher looked up and Sasuke winked at me. “I'm taking Sakura to the nurse's office!” he announced, tossing an arm around me. I pretended to collapse, and as we were halfway out the door, I saw one of the girls in my class burst into tears.

~~~
At my house, I led Sasuke up to my room. My mom wasn't home so I snuck the last of our lemon cake upstairs, and I took her good Jasmine tea as well. Instead of a good, pitiful cry, I was going to have myself a good, pitiful fake date. I would just pretend in my head that we were a real couple on a real date. That ought to get me through my day!
Up in my room, Sasuke had already pulled out my Science textbook to the Physics section. I sat close to him and put my knees close enough to his to excite myself but to also make sure that he wouldn't have any clue as to what I was doing. Sasuke started explaining the study of light refraction and I studied the way his lips moved as he talked.
I poured us more tea, not listening to him talk about boring Science and still staring at his face. I guess I was pretty close, because suddenly Sasuke turned to ask me a question and we were nose-to-nose. I yelped and moved my head back. “S-sorry!” I sputtered, “I was trying to see the diagram!”
“Uh, no problem.” Sasuke looked embarrassed but also a bit confused. Probably because he was on a page with no diagram. I had to save this.
“My dress!” I exclaimed suddenly. I sprang up from my chair. “I'll show you my dress for the Fall Dance!” I ran to my closet without waiting for his reply and pulled out a pretty pink dress. It was simple on the top, with just a bit of cleavage room (because I grew boobs this year) surrounded with pretty white pearls, and then flowed down in a few soft layers to just above my knees (because I have cute knees).
Sasuke turned to look at it, and smirked at me. “It's nice.” He chuckled. “But I don't know if I'll be able to match it.”
I laughed. “Just wear black! I'll forgive you if you don't have pink.”
I set it down on my bed, more calm now. Maybe it was time to actually start listening to Sasuke talk about Science.
I sat down beside him again, doing the secret close-knees thing (Okay, so maybe I was still focusing on the fake date). “Can you repeat that last part again?” I asked.
Sasuke half-smiled and nodded. “I had a feeling you weren't listening.” He leaned forward towards the book. “This part—” He pointed to a highlighted sentence, but my brain was scrambled eggs because as he'd moved forward his knee actually touched mine. I felt a spark go up my legs and through my spine. “Is about reflection,” Sasuke finished.
I was frozen. Wasn't he going to move his knee? My heart was thumping, and I just stared at the book because my face had flushed a deep red. This pathetic fake date was starting to seem a little less pathetic and more real.
“R-reflection?” I asked, looking up at Sasuke. As I did, I found us nose-to-nose again.
I saw him smirk. “You okay?”
“Um…” My voice came out a whisper.
Sasuke's dark eyes scanned my face. “The dress will look good on you,” he spoke.
I was flabbergasted. “U-um…thank you…” My eyes shot down at the floor and in that instance his knee moved from mine and his face was far away.
“You get the Science now?” he asked, packing the book.
“Um, y-yeah. Thank you.” I was—inaudibly— hyperventilating.
“Great,” Sasuke stood up with his book bag. “I'll pick you up tomorrow at six. Just remember there's no school,” he teased.
My god, the dance was tomorrow.
“O-okay!” I got up quickly to walk him to the door. I followed him silently downstairs and then saw him to the door.
“Goodnight,” he said while walking out.
“Goodnight!” I called. As soon as I had the door closed, I whirled around and fell against it, down to the floor. Oh my god, oh MY GOD!!! What had just happened?! I had been so obvious! How was I ever going to survive tomorrow? I clutched at my hair desperately. “EEEEEK!!!”
