(this takes place during the final part of the Chuunin exam. In the while they wait for Sasuke…)

~The Itch. ~

It had been bothering Naruto ever since the morning.

An itch; Right between his shoulder blades. In exactly the place he couldn't reach.

Normally, Naruto wouldn't have bothered with it.

He would have struggled through it for an eternity before he would have let anyone know it was bothering him.

Unfortunately, it seemed like an eternity waiting for Sasuke to arrive for the exam.

Everyone else in the area was restless; they shuffled nervously, looking at one another for amusement or perhaps to reassure themselves that the exam would be successful. They all were hoping that their goals would be reached.

But this itch, Naruto thought to himself, was driving him insane.

He had never felt such torture in his entire life. Even the two minutes waiting for Ramen to cook didn't feel as painful as this blasted itch.

He felt his eye starting to twitch slightly in time with the cursed itching on his back. He began to shuffle in his place, trying to get closer to the wall to perhaps rub against it.

Shikamaru rolled his eyes at Naruto; the blond was forced to stop his movements.

" What are you doing idiot? You're starting to get annoying…" Shikamaru said, sighing.

Naruto scratched his head and grinned ruefully.

" My back's driving me insane! It itches like hell…"

Shikamaru raised an eyebrow and crossed his arms in annoyance.

" Well what do you want me to do about it? I'm not going to scratch your back - why don't you just make a shadow replication?" Shikamaru grumbled, turning away.

Naruto sighed and shook his head.

He had used a tad too much Chakra during his fight with Neiji. Making a shadow replication would tire him more…

Plus, he would be a little ashamed to scratch his own back. It would be like he was useless without his replications.

He tried to reach the itch again, struggling with his balance.

Almost…

He could almost reach it…

He strained, tongue sticking out of the corner of his mouth from the struggle with the itch.

His enemy.

His fingers scraped just an inch away from the itch…

No such luck.

He couldn't reach it.

He sighed, about to give up, when he noticed the railing beside Gaara.

There was a slight point there in the railing…

Just enough to scratch an itch…

Without thinking, he moved to where the sullen sand ninja was, leaning backwards against the metal in an attempt to dislodge the tormentation of the itch.

Gaara stared darkly at him; he seemed to be clenching and unclenching his hands in anger.

For some reason, this bothered Naruto.

He couldn't continue with the scratching….

He feared for his life.

He started to turn around again and felt the itch starting again.

He gritted his teeth.

He would take the pain of it. He would fight the itch and he would win.

Determination bubbled on his brown.

Naruto began to try again, reaching with his fingers to try to infiltrate the location of the itch. Again, after a few minutes of vain struggling, his fingers fell short of their destination.

He was devastated.

Would he have to suffer with this itch forever?!

Would it not just go away and leave him in peace?

What had he done to warrant such insufferable agony?

Struggling to ponder this, he almost didn't feel the fingers scratching his back.

It was Gaara…

Coming to his rescue…

Naruto leaned forward against the bar and felt the sand ninja's fingers scratching away his suffering.

He let out an involuntary sigh and slumped against the cold metal bar.

Gaara continued to scratch his back, surprisingly gently in his movements.

He stopped after a few minutes and returned to staring out to the crowd, watching for Sasuke's arrival. Watching for his fight to come…

Naruto was thankful. More thankful then he had ever been in his life.

Before he even realized what he was doing, he had stuffed himself into Gaara's arms, pulling the now startled sand ninja into the biggest hug he could manage.

" THANK YOU!!"

Gaara blushed and patted Naruto on the back, unsure of what to do; Naruto pulled away grinning a moment later.

He swore that he could almost see the sand ninja smiling.
