Chapter 1: Field Trip
Good. Evil. Light. Dark. Yin, and yang. The key. You must find the key. Restore the balance of this dying world. We cannot go back, and we cannot move forward. Where have we come? I want to know. Echoing in my mind. Her last words. What have you done?

"E~le! Wake up!"
She opened her eyes groggily, pushing stray strands of light brown bangs out of her eyes. She still wasn't accustomed to the wig.
"Ele!" the girl beside her said again, poking her in the arm.
She turned to her older sister. "What is it, Jenna?"
"We're almost there! Can you help me put my hair up now?" Jenna asked, poking out her bottom lip.
Ele sighed and rolled her eyes. "Okay, fine. Give me the hair ties."
"Yea!" Jenna cried happily, fishing in the pocket of her dark purple costume and pulling out a yellow beaded hair tie and two purple rubber bands, which she handed to Ele.
"Here you go!"
Ele took the yellow beads, stifling a yawn. "Turn around. I'm so tired," she mumbled.
"You're tired? I've been sitting here bored out of my mind on this stupid bus while you slept the whole time," Jenna said. "Remind me why I came with you again?"
"Because I was going to kill you if you didn't," Ele said simply, styling her sister's long black hair into a side ponytail and wrapping the yellow beads around it. "Remind me why I'm the youngest again?"
"Because Mom and Dad had me first. Ow! Stop pulling!"
"Sorry," Ele said. "Can you hand me the next one?"
Jenna handed over the purple rubber bands. "If I die of boredom on this little field trip of yours, I'm going to come back and haunt you."
"You do that," Ele said. "Does that mean I get your room?"
"Sure, have fun cleaning it," Jenna said.
"Good point," Ele said, thinking of her sister's mess of a bedroom, nicknamed "the Abyss" for its uncanny ability to devour anything that went inside. "It's not like I chose to come on this dumb field trip."
"The teacher required it for a grade, or you would have to write a ten page essay to replace it," Jenna finished for her sister. "I know, I know. You've told me a hundred times."
"Exactly. Which is why you're coming with me as my adult supervision. So I don't die from boredom," Ele said.
"Yes. I can die instead, while you sleep. Are you done yet?"
"Yes. You're not going to let that go, are you?"
Jenna grinned, and shook her head. "Nope!"
Ele leaned her forehead in her hands. "Great. An entire weekend of you complaining."
"Wow, Ellie! You're actually talking!" a girl cried, sticking her head over the seat so suddenly she nearly knocked into the back of Ele's head.
Jenna raised her eyebrows at Ele, and the younger shook her head slightly, sighing under her breath. They turned around to face the bubbly brunette.
"Mackenzie, I talk to you every day," Ele said. "And I've told you, it's not Ellie. It's Ele. Like the letter."
"But you never talk this much, Ellie!" the girl exclaimed, ignoring Ele's correction of her name. "Who are you?" Mackenzie asked, staring at Jenna, a confused expression crossing over her face.
"This is my sister, Jenna. Remember?" Ele said.
"Ooh. Are you a vampire too?" Mackenzie asked. "Are you from China? Ellie is always writing those funny Chinese letters."
Jenna shot her sister a glance. Ele just shook her head hopelessly.
"I'm in ninth grade. What grade are you in?" Mackenzie continued, before either of them could say anything.
"I graduated last year," Jenna replied.
"Really? Do you speak Asian? I wanna learn how to speak Asian. I think it's really cool."
"Are you thinking of Japanese? I speak a little of that," Jenna said.
"Oh, so you speak Chinese too?" Mackenzie asked.
"We are now arriving at the hotel," Mr. Tanner's voice shot over their heads from the megaphone he held, interrupting Mackenzie's babbling. "Please stay in your seats while we check in."
"We're saved from blabber mouth!" Ele whispered to Jenna, who laughed quietly.
The lit teacher and one of the supervising parents climbed off the bus, entering the hotel lobby. All of the students crowded against the windows, peering at the tall hotel they were parked in front of and chatting excitedly.
"It's really big," Jenna commented.
"At least it's nice looking from the outside," Ele said.
"As long as it isn't like that crappy hotel we stayed at in Ohio, I'm happy," Jenna said.
"Isn't that the truth?" Ele agreed. She turned to look at her sister. "Oh, great. Hold still."
"What?" Jenna asked.
"I missed a piece of your hair," Ele said, reaching for Jenna's ponytail.
Jenna leaned away. "You are not re-doing it!"
"But it's going to bother me," Ele said, trying again to grab the ponytail.
Jenna slapped her sister's hand away. "No! Don't touch it!"
"Please?" Ele said.
"No, and that's final!" Jenna said, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Fine, be that way," Ele muttered. "I can't look at you now."
"It's not my fault you're such a perfectionist," Jenna said.
"Well, it's not my fault you're so obstinate."
"I'm not obstinate!" Jenna cried.
"Yes, you are," Ele said.
"I am not!" Jenna said.
"See? You're just proving my point," Ele pointed out.
"Oh, just go back to sleep," Jenna said, glaring at her sister.
"And so you start again," Ele muttered, shaking her head and turning away.
"What does obbernut mean?" Mackenzie asked, sticking her head over the seat again.
The two sisters sighed in unison. "It's obstinate," Ele said.
"Okay, what does it mean? Is it some Chinese word?" the fourteen year old asked.
"No, Mackenzie. It's English, and it means stubborn," Ele explained.
The door of the bus opened and Mr. Tanner climbed on. "Alright, everyone exit the bus in an orderly manner! Miss Smith will assign you your room numbers."
"You know, he has really good timing," Jenna whispered to Ele as the two girls followed the parents and students off the bus.
"Doesn't he?" Ele agreed. The girls giggled.
They waited in line around Miss Smith, the woman who had accompanied Mr. Tanner to sign everyone in.
"Name and supervisor," Miss Smith said when they reached her.
"I'm Jenna Harrison. I'm supervising Ele," Jenna said, as Ele had clammed up beside her as she always did around people she didn't know.
"If you think you're funny, you aren't," Miss Smith said. "Now please give me your real name and supervisor."
"But I am the supervisor," Jenna said.
"That's enough, young lady," Miss Smith said, her voice rising.
"It's okay, this is Miss Harrison's older sister. She's accompanying Ele on the trip," Mr. Tanner cut in, stepping up.
"Oh, I see," Miss Smith said, giving Jenna a resentful glare. "Very well, you'll be in room number 1411, with Mackenzie Woods." She handed them two room keys and turned away brusquely.
"Ugh. Why Mackenzie?" Ele moaned as they walked away.
"Ha ha, stupid lady! You lose!" Jenna said, walking backwards to face Miss Smith and sticking her tongue out at the woman.
"Jenna, shh! She'll hear you!" Ele said, grabbing Jenna's arm and turning her around.
"Well, it serves her right," Jenna said. "Maybe we can stick some ice down her shirt while she's not looking."
"Jenna, would you just let it go?" Ele muttered, still pulling on her sister's arm.
"Why should I? I don't like her!" Jenna stated, crossing her arms over her chest.
"You're so mature sometimes," Ele said sarcastically.
"Ele! Look!" Jenna cried suddenly, waving her finger at something to their left.
"What is it now?" Ele sighed.
"Cosplayers! Let's go!" Jenna shot a fist up in the air and marched toward a group of people wearing various costumes.
"Where did they come from?" Ele wondered to herself. "Jenna, are you sure it's okay for us to run off like this?" she called, running after her sister.
"Hi!" Jenna proclaimed as she reached the group, sticking out a hand in greeting.
The people turned to look at her. "Oh, hi. Who are you?" one girl asked.
"I'm Jenna, and this is my sister, Ele." She indicated to Ele, who had just caught up with her.
Ele smiled sheepishly, and nodded. Halfway hiding behind her sister.
"I'm Ty, and this is my cousin, Rob." The girl indicated to a tall guy behind her, who waved.
"Hey, it's Ball from 666 Satan!" Ele suddenly exclaimed. "Oh," she said, blushing and clamping her hands over her mouth.
Jenna gasped. "You're right!" She pointed at the girl named Ty. "And you're Ruby!"
"Wow, you actually know what it is, then?" Ty asked.
"She's only obsessed with it," Ele said.
Jenna grinned, and nodded.
"That's awesome. I love it too," Ty said.
"Not many people know 666 Satan. You're pretty cool," Rob said.
"So, who are you guys supposed to be?" Ty asked.
"I'm Jay, and she's Norma, from Tales of Legendia," Jenna explained.
"It's a videogame," Ele added.
"I've never heard of it," Ty said. "Is it good?"
"Yep! It's one of our favorite games!" Jenna said, throwing a fist up in the air.
"See, Rob?" Ty said, turning to her cousin. "I told you you don't know every game."
"I never said I don't know that game," Rob said.
"Then what's it about?" Ty asked. Rob didn't answer. "See?"
"Uh oh. We should probably get back now," Jenna said.
"Back?" Ty asked.
"We're here on a school field trip," Ele said. "She just decided we should come say hi, since we saw other cosplayers."
"Oh. You're cosplaying for school?" Ty asked.
"Yep!" Jenna said.
"That's awesome," Ty said. "Well, have fun."
"We will! Nice meeting you!" Jenna said.
"Come on, time to go," Ele said, grabbing her sister's arm and pulling her back to the rest of the group, just as Mr. Tanner called out their names.
"Here!" Jenna cried, waving her hand in the air to announce their presence.
"There you are!" a voice screamed behind them, nearly causing them to jump out of their skins.
They turned around to see Mackenzie. "We get to be in the same room together Ellie! Aren't you happy?"
"Thrilled," Ele said dryly.
"Can't we go in already? It's freezing out here!" Mackenzie whined.
"What are you talking about? This is the perfect temperature," Ele said.
"No it's not! It's way too cold! Why won't the sun come out? I wish Mr. Tanner would just let us go inside already!" Mackenzie continued.
"Alright, let's go inside, everyone!" Mr. Tanner called.
"Finally! Oh my gosh! We've been standing out here for like, two hours!" Mackenzie proclaimed as she ran ahead of them into the hotel.
Jenna and Ele exchanged looks and shrugged. "Good timing as usual," Ele said.
Jenna nodded. "Yep." They followed everyone else into the hotel lobby.
