Title: The Running Free
Author: Xin
Note: Sasuke is not pregnant. Just wanted to set the record straight. That would have been funny though. And probably a bit overwhelming for all three. Poor Itachi, would have had to deal with two pregnant boys…damn.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sasuke had finally managed sleep for about a half an hour before he woke up due to the pain in his stomach that had steadily increased since he fell asleep. He lay there for a moment, just trying to breathe through the pain when he suddenly shot out of bed and ran to the bathroom. He leaned his head over the toilet and emptied out the contents of his stomach, which wasn’t that much at all, since he hadn’t eaten at since the night before. All he could think about was the fact that his lovers’ were in the living room and could probably hear him. That was the last thing he wanted. His nausea calmed down some after a couple minutes but the pain remained, and it was worse than ever. He decided that it was time for him to go to the hospital. He didn’t want to prolong it in case it was something serious. He stood up and winced as the simple act of walking was painful and difficult. He went out into the living room and found Itachi and Naruto still on the couch. Itachi looked to be asleep with Naruto still nestled, also asleep in his lap. He sat down next to his brother, since he could no longer stand due to the pain and shook the older man’s shoulder, trying to wake him up.
Itachi awoke due to someone shaking him. He figured since he still felt Naruto in his lap, it was probably Sasuke. How long had he been sleeping anyway? He didn’t know, and he really didn’t want to get up either. However, with the persistent shaking he figured his brother wouldn’t quit until he woke up, so he reluctantly opened his eyes. “What is it Otouto?” he asked tiredly as he rubbed his eyes of sleep.
“I need to go to the hospital Itachi, something's wrong with me.” he said quietly. He wasn’t sure what they would do about actually getting to the hospital. Sasuke knew that he couldn’t drive with the pain he was in, and Itachi couldn’t drive because of his vision. Naruto could drive, but he didn’t have a license, so that was thrown out the window. But he needed to get there quick and he didn’t want to wait for a cab to come pick them up.
Itachi immediately came to full awareness at his brothers words. “Do you want me to call an ambulance or can you drive?” He was already thinking ahead and having the same thoughts as Sasuke. He was wondering what was wrong with Sasuke but he would try to figure out how to get to the ER first and ask Sasuke what was wrong after.
Sasuke leaned against Itachi, too tired and in pain to sit up on his own any longer. “I don’t think I can drive.” was all he said. He felt Itachi shift next to him and looked up to see him trying to wake Naruto up; at the same time, grabbing the phone from the table next to the arm of the couch.
Itachi dialed 911 and waited for someone to pick up. Once an operator came on the line he looked over at Sasuke silently asking him what to tell them. What he saw made him clutch the phone tighter, pain was etched on his little brother’s face, and he looked like he could possible vomit at any moment. “Yes, my younger brother is in an immense amount of pain and I can’t drive.” He waited for the operator to ask him the address before he gave it and hung up. “Sasuke, what’s going on?” he asked worriedly.
Naruto woke up to Itachi talking on the phone to someone. It sounded like he was saying that Sasuke was in pain? What the hell? He opened his eyes and looked over at Sasuke, who looked horrible. He looked so sick. What was going on? He heard Itachi ask that very same thing out loud and waited to hear the answer.
Sasuke rested his head on Itachi’s shoulder and tried to take deep steady breaths to try and chase away some of his nausea. “I don’t know. I’ve been feeling weird all week. I’ve haven’t really been hungry lately, and I seem to get full even if I eat a little bit. And since this morning, my stomach’s been hurting and I’ve been getting sick.”
Naruto’s eyes widened at the list of symptoms that Sasuke had spouted off. He knew of something that had those symptoms, but he doubted Sasuke had it, that would be way too much of a long shot. But what if he did? Naruto figured he’d just have to wait and find out. He looked up as he heard the knock on the front door, indicating that the ambulance had arrived. Naruto decided that he’d answer it, since he was on Itachi and Sasuke couldn’t really get up at all. He opened the door and let in two uniformed EMT’s. He directed them over to Sasuke and watched as they went to work.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~
Sasuke lay in a hospital bed in the ER. He was in the area where patients are taken to be examined and to find out what’s wrong with them. He was currently waiting for the doctor to come in through the curtained area. He had already been hooked up to monitors and tubes, just to be safe, since they didn’t quite know what they were dealing with. Sasuke really hoped that the nurse would give him some pain medication. But no such luck befell the dark haired boy. Since the doctor didn’t know what was wrong with Sasuke yet, he didn’t want to risk making the situation worse by giving him any medication. Sasuke clutched his stomach through the thin layer of his hospital gown. The pain had reduced a bit since he had woken up, but it was still bad enough for him to actually pay attention to it. He looked up and saw a young man, probably in his late twenties, who he presumed was the doctor come in through the curtains and head his way, glancing briefly at Itachi and Naruto, who were sitting quietly next to Sasuke’s bed.
“Hi there Sasuke, I’m Dr. Yamato, What seems to be going on?” The doctor looked at the contents of the folder he was holding in his hands and read over the information. He noted that Sasuke was having some sort of stomach pain. That could be attributed to anything; appendicitis, stomach flu, or something along those lines. He didn’t want to jump to any conclusions until he eliminated all possibilities. “It looks like you’ve been having some stomach problems?”
Sasuke nodded. “Today was the first day that the pain was really bad. I’ve been having discomfort in my stomach for the last couple weeks and I’ve been getting sick sometimes after I eat. I think I’ve lost weight too, probably from not eating a lot anymore.” Sasuke had a bad feeling about what was going on. He didn’t really think it was anything trivial like a stomach virus. He had a suspicion that it was much more serious.
Dr. Yamato nodded and then looked over at Itachi and Naruto. “I’m sorry; I don’t think I introduced myself to you two.” He held out his hand for the two to shake. He looked at Itachi for a moment. “Let me guess, you’re his brother right? You look like siblings.”
Itachi nodded. He was extremely worried about Sasuke. Listening to what Sasuke had been going through, according to Sasuke, for weeks, and he didn’t even know about it. He was a bit pissed that Sasuke didn’t say anything earlier. His brother always seemed to think he could handle anything.
Yamato then turned to the blond next to Itachi. “And you?”
“I’m his boyfriend.” was the blonde’s reply. He was just as worried about Sasuke as Itachi. He wished this damn doctor would stop trying to make friends and start trying to find out what was wrong with Sasuke.
The doctor nodded once more and then gave the two a reassuring smile and turned back to Sasuke. “Well, there are many possibilities as to what’s wrong, Sasuke. You could have something as simple as a stomach virus…” Before he could continue, Sasuke interrupted him.
“It’s not a stomach virus. I know it’s something more serious than that. I never get sick.” He wanted to find out what he had and he wanted to find out sooner rather than later. “Is there anything you can do to find out what’s wrong with me?”
“Yes, we can do an X-ray of your stomach and see if anything comes up. I’ll warn you now though, if nothing does come up in the X-ray, we’ll have to do further tests.” He really didn’t want to have to waste their time and money with tests that might not even show anything. Then again, he figured it would probably be better to eliminate the worst possibilities first.
Sasuke nodded. “That’s fine. I just want to get rid of the worst case scenarios.”
Dr. Yamato nodded and headed toward the curtain. “Alright then, I’ll order an X-ray for you and be back in a couple minutes.” he said before stepping out of the curtain enclosed area.
Sasuke took a moment to finally relax at knowing he might finally get some answers. He felt someone grab his hand and stroke the back of it with their thumb. He looked over to see Naruto standing beside him. “Hey baby.” he said quietly as he stroked his lovers hand as well. “I’m sorry for scaring you.”
Naruto leaned down and kissed the top of Sasuke’s head. He was just so relieved that they might get some answers. “Why didn’t you say anything about not feeling well before?” He really hated the fact that Sasuke didn’t tell them he wasn’t feeling well. Then again, Sasuke always seemed to do that, to wait until the situation got so bad that there was no other option left but to go to the hospital.
Sasuke sighed and turned away from the blond. He hated seeing Naruto looking so disappointed and hurt. “I didn’t want you two to worry about me. I figured it was probably nothing and it would go away. Plus, you have enough on your mind already with the baby and everything to worry about me.”
Naruto’s jaw tensed at the ridiculousness of Sasuke’s reasoning. “You’re such a bastard sometimes. Why would you think I wouldn’t care about you being sick just because I found out that I’m pregnant? You and Itachi are the most important people to me, and I want to know if something is wrong with one of you.”
Sasuke didn’t know what to say to that. He knew Naruto loved him with everything he had, but he never really knew how deep the blonde’s feelings for him went. “I’m sorry.” was all he could manage to say.
Itachi remained silent. He wasn’t really that mad at Sasuke, he was just, like Naruto, disappointed that his brother didn’t want to tell them. He should be able to tell Naruto and himself anything. He turned as the doctor came back into the room with a small cup filled with some kind of liquid and a small cup with a pill in it.
Sasuke had never had an X-ray before, so he didn’t know that he would have to take anything before hand. He really hoped the pill was a painkiller, he could use one.
Dr. Yamato handed Sasuke the cup with the liquid in it first. “This is called Barium. It will temporarily coat the lining of your stomach to make for clearer X-rays. Just a forewarning, it tastes horrible, so try not to spit it out.”
Sasuke drank the tiny cup of liquid and almost vomited at the taste. It was in fact horrible. After he composed himself, he eyed the pill. “Please tell me that’s a painkiller.”
“Sorry, no it’s not. This is a sodium bicarbonate pill. It will also help with clearer views of the X-ray.” He handed the pill and a small cup of water over to Sasuke, who promptly swallowed the pill. He then looked over toward the other two occupants in the room. “You’ll have to step out and stay about ten feet away from the curtain just for a couple minutes.”
At that moment an X-ray technician made his way into the makeshift room with a portable X-ray machine.
Naruto and Itachi made their way out and waited patiently until the X-rays were taken. They were called back in after the technician left and listened to the doctor.
“The X-rays won’t take that long to develop. I’ll let you rest here for a little while until they come back to me. If you’d like I can request some pain killers for you.” he suggested with a reassuring smile.
Sasuke nodded and leaned his head back against the pillows. “That would be nice.”
The doctor nodded as he headed out of the area. He returned a few minutes later with a couple pills that Sasuke gratefully downed with some water. Also in that time, the X-rays had been developed. Like Dr. Yamato thought, there was noting that could be shown on the X-rays. That didn’t mean that something wasn’t going on. He would just have to do some more tests. “So the X-rays didn’t show anything abnormal. So what I propose is that we do an upper endoscopy. Do you know what that is?” he asked.
Sasuke shook his head. He had heard of it before but he had never really known what happened when the procedure was done.
“It’s a procedure in which we insert a thin, flexible, lighted tube through your mouth into your esophagus, stomach, and the first part of your small intestine. We’ll numb up your throat before we do the procedure and you’ll receive medication intravenously so you’ll be comfortable during the procedure.” He wasn’t sure how Sasuke was going to take to this procedure. It sounded worse than it really was.
Sasuke just nodded. He didn’t really want to have the procedure done, but given as to how serious his condition might be, he figured it would be beneficial.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After the endoscopy, Sasuke lay on his left side, the position he was left in after the procedure. He was feeling rather drowsy and lethargic because of the mild sedative they had given him and his throat was still a bit numb. He faintly remembered the doctor who did the procedure say that the sedative would wear off in about thirty minutes. He wondered how long it would take them to get the results back. From what he gathered, they were worried about something, and had taken a biopsy to send to the lab. He started to pay attention to reality when Dr. Yamato came into the room.
“Alright Sasuke, the sedative probably isn’t fully out of your system yet but it should be soon. We’ll probably have the test results for you in about two days. We’ll give them to your primary doctor. She’ll give you a call when she gets them For now though, there’s really nothing more I can do for you. If you’d like, I can transfer you into the hospital, or you can go home.”
Sasuke took a moment to think on that. He wanted to go home, but at the same time, he didn’t want to get worse while he was home and not be able to get back to the hospital quick enough. He was a little ticked off that something that never would have bothered him before, suddenly had him all worked up. “I’ll go home.” He said after a couple more seconds of thought.
Dr. Yamato nodded and gave Sasuke one more reassuring look before saying his goodbyes and leaving the area for the final time.
Itachi walked up to Sasuke and gently ran his fingers through his hair. He kind of hoped that Sasuke would want to stay in the hospital, just in case something happened. He knew, however, that there was no changing Sasuke’s mind once it was made up. “Do you think you can walk outside?” he asked gently. They needed to call a cab to get home. Dr. Yamato said to not let Sasuke drive at least until the next day, and they didn’t’ drive there in the first place.
Sasuke nodded and slowly sat up. He swayed for a moment, feeling a bit dizzy from the sedative that was still in his system. “Do you want me to call a cab?” he asked as he started to stand up. He was able to manage standing pretty well, but walking, he wasn’t sure how far he could go without feeling completely exhausted.
“I’ll call.” Naruto said as he took out his cell phone. At least he could do that much. He felt so helpless the whole time they were in the ER. He couldn’t really do anything for Sasuke. Itachi was able to give Sasuke emotional and verbal support without so much as flinching. Naruto however, was fine until the endoscopy. He couldn’t bring himself to step closer to Sasuke during the procedure. He knew the doctor said t was alright if Naruto wanted to hold Sasuke’s hand or something along those lines. But Naruto just felt so overwhelmed with the whole situation that he froze up. Luckily Itachi was able to understand and took the place where Naruto should have been.
While Naruto was busy calling their cab, Itachi helped Sasuke out of the bed and back into his clothes. He noticed that Sasuke would tense up every once in a while and he looked over at his little brother. “Do you want me to ask them to prescribe some pain killers for you?” He didn’t want his brother to be in any pain and so he figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask.
Sasuke shook his head as he put his jacket on. “It’s not that bad anymore. It’s still there, but I think the pain killer from before is still working. I just want to go.” It was true. He did want to get the hell out of there. He hated hospitals and the fact that he had to resort to going to the ER was something that he wished he hadn’t had to do.
Naruto walked up to Sasuke and wrapped his arms around the other boy, resting his head on Sasuke’s shoulder. “Sorry I’m being such a baby about all of this. I’m just really worried about you. You know how I am, I tend to freeze up when crap like this happens.” He knew also that he was still coping with the fact that he was having a baby, so Sasuke getting sick right after that, it was all just a bit too much for the blond to deal with.
The three headed outside of the ER to wait for the cab to pick them up. They were all thinking about what the results of Sasuke’s tests were going to be. They all hoped that it wouldn’t be something too horrible. One thing they all knew though, the next two days were going to be hell.
While Naruto was busy calling their cab, Itachi helped Sasuke out of the bed and back into his clothes. He noticed that Sasuke would tense up every once in a while and he looked over at his little brother. “Do you want me to ask them to prescribe some pain killers for you?” He didn’t want his brother to be in any pain and so he figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask.
Sasuke shook his head as he put his jacket on. “It’s not that bad anymore. It’s still there, but I think the pain killer from before is still working. I just want to go.” It was true. He did want to get the hell out of there. He hated hospitals and the fact that he had to resort to going to the ER was something that he wished he hadn’t had to do.
Naruto walked up to Sasuke and wrapped his arms around the other boy, resting his head on Sasuke’s shoulder. “Sorry I’m being such a baby about all of this. I’m just really worried about you. You know how I am, I tend to freeze up when crap like this happens.” He knew also that he was still coping with the fact that he was having a baby, so Sasuke getting sick right after that, it was all just a bit too much for the blond to deal with.
The three headed outside of the ER to wait for the cab to pick them up. They were all thinking about what the results of Sasuke’s tests were going to be. They all hoped that it wouldn’t be something too horrible. One thing they all knew though, the next two days were going to be hell.
And for the record…he’s not pregnant.
