Two days after Sasuke had his little visit to the ER, he was feeling a bit better. His stomach wasn’t in too much pain. It came and went at unpredictable intervals, but the pain wasn’t too severe. He still didn’t have much of an appetite and he usually felt sick after he ate even a little. That morning he woke up and right away, noticed the lack of bodies in the bed with him. He sat up and looked around the room, not seeing his two lovers anywhere. He glanced at the clock and noticed it was almost one in the afternoon. No wonder no one was there, they were probably both in class. He had called his professors the day before so that he could be home to get the call from his doctor about his test results. He wasn’t sure when she was going to call, so he figured he should probably be there the whole day. As if on cue, his phone rang and he opened it up after finding it. “Hello?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~
Itachi walked into the apartment and straight to the bedroom. He knew that Sasuke was probably still in there since his brother wasn’t anywhere else in the house. He opened the door and watched Sasuke put some things in a backpack. “Hey, what are you doing?” he asked curiously as he walked up to Sasuke and kissed him gently on the cheek.
Sasuke stuffed one more shirt into the backpack before answering his brother. “Dr. Haruno called. She said that the test results were in and she wants to admit me into the hospital. She didn’t tell me what the results were, but if I’m staying there, it probably isn’t good.” To say Sasuke was scared was an understatement. He didn’t know what was going to happen. He really hoped Naruto would come home soon; he really needed his blond to make him feel safe. Not that Itachi didn’t, he just felt complete with the both of them.
Itachi felt like he had the wind knocked out of him. He knew perfectly well, that if you got tests done and they wanted to admit you into the hospital based on the results, it was not a good sign. He was deathly scared for his brother. He loved Sasuke more than anything, and thinking of life without him was breaking his heart. He tried to clear his mind and not focus on that aspect. They didn’t even know what was wrong yet, he shouldn’t jump to conclusions. “When do you have to go?” he asked as he wrapped his arms around Sasuke.
Sasuke leaned into his brother and let himself relax into the embrace. He wanted to let go of everything and just be scared and cry and feel all the emotions swirling around in his head. He knew however, that he had to be strong for his brother and for Naruto. Speaking of Naruto, Sasuke heard the door open and the blond stepped through and walked into the bedroom.
The first thing Naruto saw upon his arrival to the bedroom, was Itachi holding Sasuke and Sasuke looking like he was about to fall apart. “What happened?” was all he asked before a bundle of Sasuke flung into his arms. He knew that Sasuke was crying by the way his body shook in Naruto’s arms and the wetness that was starting to seep into his shirt. “Sasuke, what’s wrong, baby?”
Sasuke couldn’t hold back any longer once he saw Naruto in the doorway. The love of his life, the man carrying his child, that he could possibly never be able to see depending on what was said to him later. All this built up emotion broke out and he had to cling to his blond to know that he was there and that Sasuke could trust Naruto to catch him when started to spiral downward. After a few minutes, he was able to compose himself and look up at Naruto. “I have to go to the hospital, they want me to stay there and get some more tests done. They don’t know how long I’ll have to stay though.” he said quietly as he rested his head on Naruto’s shoulder.
Naruto froze; he looked down at his lover and stroked his hair gently. “It will be alright, baby. We’ll both be there with you whenever we can. Hopefully they’ll let us stay there during the night. I would hate to be alone in the hospital.” Naruto had so many emotions swirling inside of him. He knew though that he should be strong for Sasuke. There was no use in crying being weak. He could wait a little longer before he fell apart.
Sasuke nodded. He really hoped the same thing. “We should get going then. I was just waiting for you to get home.” He kissed Naruto one last time before he went and grabbed his backpack. He headed for the door grabbing Itachi’s hand on the way. He held out his other hand so that Naruto could take it and the three of them left the apartment.
Sasuke once again found himself in a hospital bed in an uncomfortable hospital gown, waiting for the results of his tests. He looked up from the quiet conversation he was having with Itachi and Naruto when his doctor, Sakura Haruno walked in with a folder in her manicured hands.
Sakura had known Sasuke since he was 18 and able to see a primary care physician. She was extremely surprised to get a call from the ER saying that they were sending her tests for Sasuke; an upper endoscopy and biopsy reports. She had looked them over and what she found wasn’t a very good sign. She wanted Sasuke to come in so she could do more tests. “Hey it’s good to see you again, sorry it had to be under these circumstances. I have your tests results here. I’ll tell you right now that it’s pretty serious.” She paused for a moment. She never really liked telling her patients bad news, especially one’s so young as Sasuke. “Looking at your biopsy from your upper endoscopy there have been some traces of cancer. We’ll have to do more tests to see how far it’s spread and the stage it’s in. Then we can discuss treatment. I’m sorry sweetheart.”
Sasuke didn’t even listen past the word cancer. He couldn’t believe it. It was bullshit, she was lying. “No, I don’t have cancer. Do the test again.” He would not except that; he was not going to go through all the crap just to die five years later. He knew the risks. He also knew the survival rate of cancer patients. They weren’t so high.
Naruto gave a small gasp when he heard the diagnosis. He had a tiny feeling that Sasuke might have cancer. He did have all the symptoms of stomach cancer after all. He didn’t want to think about it, he always associated cancer with death, and he did not want to lose Sasuke. Sasuke was his life, and the father of his child, he had to stay alive to raise their baby. He buried his head into Itachi’s chest as tears fell from his eyes.
Itachi was trying to be the strong pillar that he normally was, but he was failing miserably. How could this happen? Right after Naruto finds out he’s having Sasuke’s baby, Sasuke has to go and get cancer. He knew of course that it wasn’t Sasuke’s fault in the least, but he still didn’t know what to do. He felt helpless. He did want to know more though, maybe it was treatable.
Dr. Haruno just looked at Sasuke with sad eyes. Not pity, she did not pity her patients, she just had sympathy for Sasuke and wanted to reassure him. “We have the diagnosis pretty clear Sasuke; it would just be a waste of your time to do it again. We will do further tests, it’s most likely that the tumor will be treatable through surgury.”
Sasuke didn’t even look up at her; he didn’t want to look at anyone, especially his two lovers. “What kind of tests?” he asked in resignation, reaching over and grabbing Naruto’s hand, who he could hear crying into Itachi’s chest.
Sakura sighed and looked at Sasuke’s chart that she had in the folder. “We’ll do an MRI to see if the cancer has spread further than your stomach. Usually when symptoms occur, the patient is in the later stages and the cancer has spread outside of the stomach. We don’t know this for sure yet, every patient is different. That’s what the MRI is initially for.”
Sasuke nodded. He was a bit apprehensive to know that his cancer might be in the later stages. He just hoped he didn’t have to go through chemotherapy. He would probably have to though. From what he knew about cancer, patients usually undergo some chemotherapy even if they have a successful removal of a tumor.
Naruto lifted his head. He’d heard of an MRI before but he didn’t really know what it did. “What is an MRI?” he asked as he went over to sit on the edge of Sasuke’s bed.
Sakura turned to Naruto. She always liked the blond, he was so good for Sasuke, they were the cutest couple and she always loved seeing them together. It was a shame that the circumstances were less than desirable this time. “It’s basically a machine that uses powerful magnetic and radio waves to be able to see different parts of the body from the inside and it can show us abnormal tissues and in Sasuke’s case, if the cancer has spread anywhere beyond his stomach.” She really hoped that Sasuke was lucky enough to be in the early stages. If he wasn’t, there was only so much that she could do.
Naruto nodded in understanding. He still didn’t fully get it, but Sakura explained it pretty well. “Will it be painful?” The last thing he wanted was for Sasuke to go through any painful tests.
“No it won’t hurt at all; it’s sort of like an X-ray. He’ll just have to stay really still.” She knew how Naruto felt about Sasuke’s well being, so she understood his concern.
Sasuke didn’t really know how to handle this. He didn’t expect a diagnosis as severe as cancer. Although he did think it was more serious than the flu, he never would have guessed cancer was the cause of his symptoms. “Why do I need to stay in the hospital?” he asked. He knew that an MRI and even Chemo were out-patient procedures. So why stay in the hospital when he could easily get the shit over with and go home, where he would want to be.
“We don’t know how bad your condition is yet; we just want to take precautions. Plus, either way, you’re going to have to have surgery. Also you’ll have to go through some chemotherapy before and after, just to make sure we get rid of all the cancerous cells.” Sakura knew that, especially the first few rounds of chemo made patients really sick and weak; she figured Sasuke would rather stay in one place, rather than going back and forth from home to the hospital every week. “If you’d prefer, you can commute from home to here. But it might be easier to just stay until after your surgery. We’ll have to schedule that as soon as possible.”
“I don’t want to stay here. I’d rather just commute.” He wanted to be home, especially for Naruto’s sake. His lover needed to be home and taking it easy, not worrying over him and going back and forth from home to the hospital every chance he got. He knew Naruto would be there with him as much as he could.
Itachi knew Sasuke wanted to be home for Naruto, but he also knew that Sasuke wanted to be home, just because he felt more comfortable there. Sasuke always hated hospitals, ever since he was a little kid. Itachi remembered always having to calm down a panicking Sasuke whenever he would be in the hospital as a child. Since their parents weren’t around that much when they were younger, Itachi pretty much was the one to raise Sasuke. He seemed to be the only one in their family to actually pay attention and care that Sasuke actually existed.
Sakura nodded in understanding. “Alright, but I’ll just warn you, chemotherapy will take a lot out of you. I know that Itachi can’t drive, and you probably won’t feel up to driving home.” She looked at Naruto. “You drive don’t you Naruto?”
Naruto shook his head. “I don’t have a license yet. I can drive, and I have a permit.” He always told himself that he needed a license. He never got around to it though because Sasuke always drove him everywhere. He could technically drive as long as Sasuke was in the car with him, so he figured he’d be the one driving him home. “I can drive though, as long as Sasu’s in the car with me.”
Sakura nodded. “Alright, that should work out fine then. I’ll order your MRI, Sasuke, and I’ll be back in a few minutes.” With that, she took her leave, letting the three boys discuss things in private.
As soon as Naruto saw Sakura leave the room he launched himself into Sasuke’s arms; tears falling and sobs escaping his throat. He felt a hand stroke his hair and knew that Sasuke was trying to reassure him. How could he be reassured when his lover was just diagnosed with cancer? “You’re going to do the treatment aren’t you? You have to Sasuke. You have to be here, with us, for me and Itachi, and our baby.” Naruto didn’t really know what he was saying. He felt overwhelmed and he was scared out of his mind. He just wanted to know that Sasuke would be alright.
Sasuke wrapped his arms around Naruto and held him close. “It’s alright baby, I’m not going anywhere, and I’m going to be here for you and Itachi and our baby. Don’t cry Naru, I’m going to do everything I can to get better, I promise.” He knew that his promise was the truth. He would do anything for Naruto and Itachi. He would do the treatment and the surgery and hopefully get better so he can be with his family. The people he loved the most.
Well there you have it. Sorry about the wait for this revelation…the buildup is everything after all. I know I probably just made the plot all the more complex, thus digging my own grave, but I felt it needed a bit more complexity. Either way, I’ll update soon. Hope you liked!
