This Mask I Wear

I wear a mask of smiles

To hide my inward tears,

To keep others from knowing

What I hide, my fears.

I long to hold someone close.

Yet no one comes, no one nears.

Still alone as death comes.

And soon I'll run out of years.


I wear a mask of smiles

To hide how spent I feel,

To show comfort to others,

That hides the hurt that's real.

I wish to show the truth.

Yet I know I must kneel

To the need to shield others,

From the pain this mask does seal.


I wear a mask of smiles

While I wait for death to come.

Most flee her cold embrace,

Yet to her arms I run.

I want to feel a lover's love.

Yet still, there is none.

I strive to gain this from few,

Though they spurn all I've done.


I wear a mask of smiles

That hides more and more.

I wonder as death comes,

What lies behind My door?

Will it be that land of rest

Where tears flow no more?

Or will it be that great fire

That hides behind My door?
