Naruto Fan Fiction ❯ World Collision ❯ Breakfast around the fire ( Chapter 48 )

[ P - Pre-Teen ]

Jessica's mind slowly cleared from its dormant state as something repeatedly sounded in her ears. Furrowing her eyebrows together, she slowly opened her eyes. “A few more minutes… I'm tired,” she mumbled to her master.

“I can see that alright, you've been putting my legs to sleep!” He stated in a rather annoyed voice as he tried shaking her arms off. Feeling herself being thrown up and down, she opened her eyes and quickly released Deidara's legs from her grasp.

“Oh, sorry Deidara-sama; I didn't know!” She said quickly as he stood to his feet which wobbled slightly.

“Perhaps I should stay clear from your area when I go to sleep,” he mumbled back as he put his things back into the black backpack Jessica had been carrying. Rubbing her eyes, Jessica let a small yawn escape from her lips as she cupped her hand a few inches from her mouth.

“Well at least that never ending night is over now,” she thought to herself. “I was sure that I'd never get asleep again.” Standing to her feet slowly, she looked down at where the fire was once blazing to now being a pile of the surviving chard sticks. Judging by the daylight, it must have been around eight in the morning. Perhaps it was seven, or even nine? She could never tell anymore, not that it mattered much now anyways.

“What are we having for breakfast?” She asked as she picked up her pack and began following the blond through the forest.

“Tobi went to catch some fish about an hour or so ago.” He replied as he glanced back at the zombie-like figure which waddled in big steps behind.

“I still hate fish,” she grumbled loud enough for only her own ears to hear. If Deidara heard her, he'd probably push off some big argument about how she should be grateful and it would end an hour later with her saying something along the lines of her saying she was going to eat it anyhow from the start. Over all, it would just be a big waste of time and result in them each gaining an unwanted headache.

After walking for another five minutes, they came across a small creak where a tiny pillar of smoke rose in the air. Beside it, a cheerful Tobi waved at them.

“Good morning Jessica-chan! Good morning Deidara-Sempai! Good morning Jessica-chan!” He shouted towards them as they approached.

“Why did you say good morning to Jessica twice?” The blond said as he rubbed his ear with a finger; he obviously didn't like hearing the man's loud voice this early in the morning.

“Because Sempai, Jessica-chan is special,” He replied as he looked up at them.

“…Okay then,” the slave girl said hesitantly with an odd expression on her face after a moment of silence between them.

“Come, sit and eat! Tobi cooked us all some fresh fish!” The masked man exclaimed as he pointed at the shish-ca-bobbed fish that still roasted by the fire. As they both sat on the logs which the man must have put there minutes before, Tobi took the sticks out of the ground and handed one to each of them. Looking down at hers, Jessica sniffed a bit before taking a small nibble out of it as she masked out her disgust for the food.

“I will never take my Mom's cooking for granted ever again if I ever go home! She thought to herself as she felt the slippery yet almost fluffy texture of the fish move through her mouth. Taking a hard swallow, she took another bite. A few seconds later, she looked up when she realized that Deidara had been staring at her.

“What,” she asked.

“Why didn't you pray this time?” He replied with another question. The girl then thought for a second before responding.

“I'm not sure if I'm very thankful for this,” she muttered as she looked down at the fish.

“Oh, I thought you were the one who saw every thing as a blessing though.” He said with raised eyebrows.

“When did I say that exactly?”

“You don't have very good memory do you? You said it when we ate in Sasori-san's room, remember? I asked you why you found everything as a blessing and you said that you were blessed for seeing every little thing as a blessing.” He said as he faced her while putting a foot up on the log which he rested his arm on. Looking at his infamous smug grin, she rolled her eyes as she took another bit out of the unappetizing fish.

“Well I know this is a blessing of sorts… God's providing me with it… But sometimes I really don't like what he gives me,” she sighed. “The word `blessing' means happiness, and the only happiness I can think of that would come from this would be a filled stomach. I guess I could still do my usual prayer before or after I finish this, but I'm rather lazy today.”

“Does Jessica-chan not like my cooking?” Tobi whimpered as his shoulders slumped. Putting a hand up as she made a noise symbolizing the thought `ops, that's not what I meant!' she let out a half-hearted chuckle.

“No it's not like that; I've just never liked fish… Especially plain fish… Boy I was spoiled by the oily, over-sugared American food.” She said defending herself partially as she took another bite as if to prove that she would eat it. “Let's just talk about something else now. Uh, so how long do you think we'll be in the rain village territory, Deidara-sama?”

“We may be able to get out of it by tonight if everything goes smoothly; this country isn't very large, and it's pretty narrow in the direction we're heading in. The harder part would be when we cross the fire nation; it's one of the five major powers. Not only that, but their country is pretty massive such as the size of the rock country and the wind country. As long as we keep a low profile though, we should be able to manage alright without getting caught by many shinobi.”

“Really, it's that small of a country?” Jessica asked as she tried procrastinating from eating her fill. “So, from the fire nation, would this `mist village' area you're talking about next to it then?”

“Not quite; the mist village is a large island, so we'll have to pass over seas.” He answered as he threw the remains of his fish into the fire.

“Please tell me we aren't going to walk across it,” she moaned.

“Silly Jessica-chan, why would we walk across a sea? We'll go by boat or fly on one of Sempai's clay birds.” Tobi said as he patted her on the head. Glairing at him slightly, Jessica wrinkled her nose as she took another bit out of her fish. “Sempai, how does Jessica-chan know about that jutsu?”

“Tobi, you're an idiot,” the blond replied.

“Why do you say that?” The masked man asked as he pointed at his partner with his stick.

“When we gathered to extract the one-tailed beast, we had to cross that river remember? Even though you weren't there when I had to carry her across it to get to the cave, you must have carried her across it again when you and Zetsu-san took her while I was gone.”

“Oh ya,” Tobi said rather quickly as he looked forward, not looking at anything in particular. “So Jessica-chan, why don't you just learn it?” He said as he turned to look at the girl.

“Me,” she said pointing at herself as she shrugged back a bit.

“No, it's impossible.” Deidara stated simply.

“What do you mean Sempai?” Tobi asked as he cocked his head.

“Don't tell me you didn't notice; you really are an idiot! Her body doesn't have any sort of chakra stream in it, which is rather odd. Even regular citizens have them; they're just not `activated'… But for Jessica, she just doesn't have one; she doesn't even have a chakra presence. It would be impossible for her to learn any sort of jutsu involving chakra.”

“I guess it was a good thing that Jessica-chan lived in a village without shinobi then huh? She would be made fun of by everyone else since she wouldn't have been able to join any ninja academy. She's also lucky to be with us now, since she wouldn't be able to protect herself against enemy shinobi. I guess you're more blessed then you think, huh Jessica-chan?” He said as he looked over to the girl who looked slightly confused.
“I guess so…” She replied, still obviously clueless to what they were saying. Perhaps it was better that she didn't know, though it did bother her that she was seen as a complete weakling. She still didn't really understand what this `chakra' thing was, or these `jutsus', but yet again that may also be something she'd rather not know about.

“Well, it's time to set out again,” the blond stated as he stood to his feet. As she and the masked man stood as well, Jessica sighed as she gave in.

“Okay Lord, I guess I should say thank you for the meal. Though I didn't exactly enjoy it, I won't go starving either. I'm not paying for it either besides having to carry the backpack, which is fine I guess. So thank you for the food you gave me, and please help the next meal to be a bit more appealing… Please?”
