He remained calm and ever-silent. No wonder not a single soul had stirred.
The room he had slipped into was covered in a thick veil of darkness. It was all the more convenient in his…profession. Shrugging off his non-existent worries, he took a step closer to the bed.
Angel.
Her breath reminded him so much of snow. Her pale, ivory skin gleamed like alabaster in what little light there was in the room. Her periwinkle hair framed her small face in short, silky strands. She looked like a goddess, lain on white silk sheets…
And I come to give you the kiss of eternity.
He sat by her side, careful not to wake her. His featherweight body had accomplished that for him. Raising one pale hand, he brushed aside a few stray locks.
Such beauty…
He had dipped his forehead slightly towards hers, his head bowed down and eyes closed in mild concentration. He was reading her thoughts, the book of her life. Her mind's eye showed him her dreary England life trapped in Victorian silk, her desire for an alternative-of scarce she was aware, and a thousand faceless mortals bearing down upon her such scrutiny and depression. All resulting to her silence…
Let me feel…love…
Suddenly, a barrage of thoughts seized him further into her subconscious. It took all of his effort not to get sucked deeper. As he halted firmly in this newly-discovered abyss of memory, his head reeled and he gritted his teeth in anguish. What had dragged him into this pit!? Where was he, actually? For an instant, he had found himself drifting in nothingness, a sense of loss pinning him to a standstill. One emotion throbbed in his head, but it was nothing that he expected. The moment slowly passed.
Blood. The sensation was a first, and it stung him to the core. The blood flowed out of his closed eyes, trickled down his alabaster cheeks and formed a small puddle on his chin. He raised his hands to his face, bewilderment marring his eternal beauty. He had thought it not possible to ever cry again. And now…
"Let it be…Heero."
It was barely audible, more like an exhalation of breath. But Heero heard it. His cobalt eyes, grown hazy with blood tears, went wide with alarm. His mouth gaped open in shock, unwittingly revealing his unearthly canine fangs.
She gazed at them with…curiosity, he realized. There wasn't the slightest hint of fear in her. He found himself locked in her gaze, as she stared on, her crimson orbs reminding him all the more of his kind.
Blood.
"Let it be."
Once again, she had spoken. Her voice, though soft and barely audible, was filled with so much conviction his ears rang. What matter of bewitchment befell him? Who is this girl before him? He was dumbstruck, in a state of utter loss. Who is she?
Rei.
She sighed. Her breath throbbed in his ears with the song of life. She is alive. He was alive. She is alive. He was…but not now…
You're alive.
He could read the question in her eyes, nothing else. It was only then that he realized how much of this being was veiled to him, when in fact he had known his kind to be able to bare souls of mortals and immortals alike. Her frailty was but a front. She was infinitely deeper…and possibly out of his reach.
The girl, Rei, nodded in understanding. Had she read his thoughts? How much does she know? Who is she, really? Who is she?
Who are you?
