Chapter 1

Tokyo 3 was actually a beautiful city. The sun shining in the sky was assured this fact all the more. The tall buildings and rolling green hills stretched out resembling a panoramic painting. The trees almost seemed to sparkle in the sunlight and birdcalls rang out.

A public Transit bus trundled along a the twisting that lead directly down to the heart of the city. Its engine groaning like an old man. The ride was a gorgeous one, that is when people cared to remove their earphones and stare out of the windows at the sights around them. Regardless of the views the bus continued its track down the hills. The bus entered the urban streets onlookers from inside could see that much of the city was under construction and repair. It would have to be seeing as it was only four years since everything had fallen apart.

The bus halted at a stop and its passengers began to disgorged from it and began heading off in different directions. One though headed towards the pay phones. He carried a back pack and a duffle bag.

Shinji Ikari was slim, not skinny though many people believed the latter. His slightly brown skin was gave his dark brown hair a very noticeable quality. Shiniji Ikari was eighteen years old. It had been four years since Third Impact and the disbandment and destruction of the Evangelions.

Shinji sighed as he walked. It was odd to think back to that time. Everything had been so depressing during the war, Shiniji nearly laughed, and he should know all about being depressed. And what was funny, was that he still was. But he had left Tokyo t3 immediately after he found out that Asuka had woken from her coma, he had to know she was alright. And once he knew, he bid goodbye to his friends and companions and left to live in America. He had traveled and had learned to deal with his problems best he could.

Technically he was depressed. Shinji suffered from a very common factor of depression. He was lonely. And he knew it. As he gripped a phone form one fo the booths and slapped in a couple of coins his mind drifted back to Asuka. Why do I always feel this way? Why can’t I just be fine? His feelings for the girl had not changed over the years. In fact they had grown stronger.

Dialing the numbers to Misato’s apartment he leaned against the booth. I hope she’s happy somewhere, she deserves it. He looked blankly at the graffiti etched all over the phone booth’s inside. I just wish I could have stood my ground and taken care of her...

The phone rang twice bee someone answered. “Hello?” It was Misato, her voice sing song and unconcerned.

“H-Hi Misato, its Shinji.”
“Shinji!” Her voice leapt in joy. This made Shinji’s eyes widen, did she really miss him that much? Misato continued after a slight pause and a gulp sounded over the phone. “You want me to come pick you up?”

Nodding to no one Shinji leaned back. “Yea. That is if your not busy.”

“Of course not! Its no problem at all!” Misato said happily. In the background someone spoke. Misato sounded distracted. “No- stop! Its Shinji ok? Happy? It was supposed to be a surprise.” The person in the back yelled.

“THAT’S SHINJI!” Shinji felt his heart stop. It was Asuka. And she sounded... happy?

The yelling continued. “You have drank one to many beers!” Misato made a grumble. Asuka was close to the receiver. “I’ll go pick him up, you can trust me you know that.”

Misato let out another grumble. “Fine.” her voice suddenly blasted back into Shinji’s ear, causing him to jump. “Shinji Asuka will come pick you up, ok?”

“O-ok.” He gulped. Why did this always happen?

“Where are you?”

He looked around. “The bus station, I think.”

Asuka said something and a the sound of keys jingling could be heard before Misato continued. “Alright Shin! She’ll be there in fifteen minutes. ‘K?”

“Sounds good! I’ll see you soon.”

Shinji sat down on a bench next to the street. Asuka was coming to get him. And he was scared, to the point that he kept checking his back pack straps and duffle bag to make sure everything was with him. I really, REALLY hop she’s not in a bad mood. He remembered her legendary temper all to well.

Turning on his MP3 player he leaned back enjoying the sun best he could with a nervous feeling radiating through him. His eyes drifted shut and he found himself dozing.

A horn honked and Shinji opened his eyes to the seductive voice of a girl yelling out of a car window. “Hey baka!”

Else where in Tokyo 3

A lone guitar player was bashing out tunes on a street corner. It was a catchy tune called the Fields of Athenry. He was a deportee, most likely American. He was handsome by Rei’s standards, if slightly dirty. His face was angled if not heavily, almost feminine. He wore a heavily studded leather jacket and wore a classic Irish cap on his head. His hand was a blur over the string of his guitar and his voice almost a growling melody.

By a lonely prison wall,

I heard a young girl calling,

Micheal they have taken you away,

For you stole Trevelyn's corn,

So the young might see the morn,

Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay,

The song was sad. Children should never have their father taken away to die because he stole food to keep them fed. Rei thought angrily. She had heard him play it before and had enjoyed it. Rei stopped in front of him, a guitar case with several bills and many coins sat in front of him. He stood there his slim fitting black jeans had patches sewed all over and his combat boots were worn. I do not know why I find him interesting, or even possibly attractive. Yet he entices me. She held in her coated arms several bags of groceries. The singer kicked into the final chorus of the song.
Low lie the Fields of Athenry,

Where once we watched the small free birds fly,

Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing,

It's so lonely 'round the Fields of Athenry,

Rei watched him tapping her own foot as she waited for the bus. Rei was dressed in a black jacket and a knee high pleated skirt. His name was Joey Mcgrath. Odd sounding to Rei but he was from America and things were different in other countries. How Rei knew him was through work. He was an assistant chef in a restaurant that Rei worked at, they had hardly spoke but they knew of each other.

The song ended and Joey placed his guitar inside its case after gathering his earnings and shove them inside his pockets. He stood and walked forward and stood at the bus stop. He’s odd. He works yet comes out to the street to play music for more money... It confused Rei but she did not put to much thought into it. She doubted he was interested in her as it was.

Sighing she leaned back against the bus stop pole. It was only the two of them. She did not know what to do since he stood there rigidly staring across the street, though is hands were constantly playing with something on his jacket. Is he nervous?

He started shaking his head and grumbling. Rei kept staring forward. It was always Asuka that could talk to guys, when she wanted to that is. Rei simply did not know what to say to them, she did not have much experience except for an old boyfriend.

Joey suddenly stomped his foot and turned to Rei. “Your Rei Ayanami right?”

Rei was startled out of her thoughts scrambled for words and only came up with one. “Yes.”

He nodded before continuing. “Uh right, I’m, I mean my name is Joey.” He offered his hand. He is odd but... amusing. She shook his hand politely. Her eyes looked down at his hand, several scars patterned his knuckles. Rei felt her mind look into his. It was a side effect of all her training within Nerve at such an early age. Her brain had unlocked enough that she could, on rare occasions, seem to look into another person’s thoughts. She hated having it happen to her though. It always left her feeling dirty. But when she looked into his mind she only sensed curiosity and a growing fondness from him.

He stretched his legs. “Its nice to meet you. We work together don’t we?”

Rei nodded. Was it just simple conversation he wanted? She paused it was not what she had sensed from him. She did have questions. Following a lead from Asuka she asked him directly. “Why do you play music for money in the street if you work?”

He was taken back from the question, his eyes slightly confused. He rubbed the his jaw before responding. “Well I work and I don’t mind my job in the slightest, but I also love to stand on street corners and play guitar for any one who will listen.” He gave her a mischievous smile. “That and it pays for my beer.”

Rei nodded Had she looked at him she would have seen him slap his hand over his eyes. She glanced up just as her bus rolled up. Why can't I say more? I need to talk to Asuka. She always knows what to say. She reached down for her bags there were one to many for her. Obviously noticing this he leaned forward picking one up. “Need some help?" Looking at her with a friendly smile he continued. "This is my bus as well.”

She looked at him, most people she had noticed, tended to be startled by her crimson eyes. He only stood there waiting for an answer. He hasn’t hit on me or tried any perverted grabs... She contemplated before answering. Yes she did want him to pick up the bags, it ironically wasn't very often that a guy talked to her. “Yes, thank you.”

He started to whistle an Irish tune as they both payed their bus fare and sat down opposite each other, she looked him over and listened to his fluttering whistles. He seemed nervous to Rei, she did not know why for she had been polite to him, if anyone should have been nervous it was her. She could still sense his mind from that hand shake and she wanted to blush for his attraction was almost screaming at her, though not threateningly she would have sensed that. He kept throwing glances at her and kept whistling often picking up tempo every time he looked at her. She couldn’t help but hide a small smile, he was making a total fool of himself and did not seem to mind in the slightest.

Rei’s stop came and as she stood a thought came to her. I should thank him.She glanced at him, she could not help looking at his body just once more. “Thank you...” She rushed out the last bit before throwing him a small wave and jumping off the bus. “For helping Joey. Bye.”

Lowering his hand from the wave Joey felt his head hit his guitar case. He sighed and muttered. “Great I’m falling for a girl that I hardly know, and for shits ‘n giggles I can’t stop thinking about her.” He had known of Rei Ayanami. It was hard not to working at Fukushimas. He had seen her many times working but every time he attempted to talk to her he couldn't get the words out and simply kept walking. It was funny really, he could do stage performances and talk to all manner of people but when it came to one girl, especially one such as Rei Ayanami he could barely get out a 'hello.'

The bus pulled up to the side of a street where abandoned buildings lined the street. Tora Street. It was his stop and he hopped out. Slapping his cap on his head he wanted to slap himself. I really should not have mentioned the beer. He faltered. How was one girl messing with him so badly? He never gave a damn for what anyone thought of him. And now he was concerned over this. He clenched his fist. "Fuck I am falling for her."

Tomorrow I’ll talk to her. He thought determinedly as he walked down the street passing all the different squats that littered the street, random kids dressed much the same as he sat around smoking cigarettes, drinking, and laughing. He sped up his walk as a grin spread across his face. Perhaps I’ll kiss her as well. He shook his head. Or perhaps I’m just a fool and instead of a kiss I'll take her foot to the crotch that gets me into so much trouble.

Joey McGrath didn't know it but the albino beauty felt akin to him.

Within Misato’s Car.

Shinji nervously ran his fingers down his dark slacks. She hadn’t said a word the entire drive. He looked at her for the fiftieth time. She was wearing tight jeans and a back shirt, her long red hair streaming down her back. Those blue eyes stared straight ahead.

He gulped. “H-how have y-you been Asuka?”

Her eyes narrowed and suddenly she spun the wheel and they sped up a street.

“Asuka what the hell are you doing!?” Shinji yelled. His face was coated in sweat. And only one thought came to his mind as he gripped the dashboard. I am going to fucking die!

Trees flew by and she suddenly slammed the brakes and pulled over. Dust flew past the car. She spun towards Shinji her eyes flashing angrily. When she spoke she was quiet and dangerous sounding. “Shinji where have you been?” Before he could speak she held up a hand. “Hold it. Why would you leave as soon as I woke up?”

Shinji choked. He sighed and leaned back into the seat dejectedly. “I left because I couldn’t take being here anymore. It was too many reminders so soon.” He motioned to her. “And I left because I didn’t want to hurt you... I couldn’t even take care of myself much less someone else.” He looked down at his hands. “I remember what you said...”

He heard a slight sniff. Turning he saw that Asuka was blinking back tears but looked ready to chew on nails. When she spoke her voice was shaky. “Shinji... I awoke believing that you would be sitting there waiting to hold me.” Suddenly she yelled at him her pain breaking through her voice. “Do you have any idea how horrible it was waking up and seeing the one person you thought cared about you run out of town?” She leaned into her window tears trickling freely down her cheeks. “I meant what I said Shin-kun...”

What a fool I am. Shinji reached out to touch her shoulder. He felt like jumping off a cliff. He had wanted to protect her, not hurt her. Not for any reason. “Please don’t touch me...” She said quietly.

His hand dropped. Regret tinged every thought in his head. “Listen Asuka... I never meant to hurt you...” he paused as she turned to look at him, her eyes were red and her body scrunched up on the drivers seat. “But I came back to right the wrongs I may have done.” He swallowed visibly. I cannot believe I’m about to say this. “I came back to find you.” He paused gauging her reaction. She had stopped crying and just stared at him now. “I found peace enough while living else where and I still have not gotten to reply to you about what you said that day.”

Asuka had straightened looking at him. Her eyes flashed again. “Do you mean the day we, or you I should say, saved the world? Or,” She grabbed his arm. She bit off every word. “The. Day. I. Said. I love you?”

Shinji almost shrunk back. He nodded. “I never got to say my thoughts on your words...” he trailed off and he saw her eyes suddenly get sad, her hand gripping harder. He touched her hand, she was soft. And it filled him to the his depths with elation. He took a deep breath. “Asuka since the day I met you so long ago, I have been fascinated with you. And the only thought that I ever had that kept me considering staying around in this world, was you.” He looked at her eyes again. She was frozen and a tear trickled down. With a gentle smile Shinji reached out and brushed it away. She did not blink. He took another deep breath and readied himself. “Asuka Langley Soryu.” he paused looking directly into her eyes. “I love you with all my heart.”

With that Asuka let out a cry and her head buried itself on his shoulder. She sobbed and clawed at his front, he just leaned his head upon hers and held her. She started calm down. She broke his embrace reluctantly. Sitting back she wiped her tears and let out a shaky laugh. “God Shinji.” she turned and smiled at him. “I have missed you so much.” She then pointed at him getting his attention immediately. “If you do love me then kiss me and take me as your girlfriend.” Before he opened his mouth she cut him off, again. “And I don’t just want you. I want all of you Shin-kun.”

Shinji spoke his voice not wavering or breaking. “Asuka I give myself to you completely, there is not one limb or part of me that is not yours.” With a nervous grin Shinji brushed her arm. “Asuka if you’ll have me, will you?”

She laughed. Shinji knew he could listen to that laugh all day. “Of course I want you! I’ve wanted you for four years!” With that the delighted Asuka felt Shinji’s hands grasp her middle and pull her to him gently. She felt his lips, soft and gentle press against hers. She let out a happy sigh and wrapped her arms around his neck. She did not break the kiss when she felt his tongue probe her lips. She opened her mouth and eagerly began kissing the boy who had turned into a handsome man. She let her self go willingly, it would take time and many talks for her to fully be able to forgive him for running out but at this time. But at this precise second. Asuka Langely Soryu was happy.

The kiss broke and Shinji held her for awhile until she grumbled. “These seats are uncomfortable.” She nuzzled his shoulder, that was still wet from her tears. She leaned back and straightened her shirt. She started the car again. Before leaning over and sneaking one more precious kiss from her man and whispering into his lips. “It’s time to head back I think.”

As the car sped onward to Shinji’s new home he smiled. Coming back home was turning out better than he had ever expected. And when he looked to his hand which held Asuka’s smaller one, he felt his insides heat up. Perhaps life was turning up.

So thanks reading chapter numero uno! I have already introduced one of the fictional characters I’ve been brainstorming (damn my impatience) and Shinji and Asuka are together (had to beat it to the punch no time to wait for the plot) and Rei is having some serious thoughts over someone (quite an accomplishment really)

Next chapter more shall come. Therefore more of my cheesy-romantic-fatalist story. I’ll try to post it rather soon and keep a decent posting schedule.

Thanks for reading
