Neon Genesis Evangelion - Second Coming
Chapter Two - A Fanboy's Dream Come True
`You must be kidding Shinji. There's no way we can prepare for another invasion by Angels. And how can we trust what you say were the words of the seventeenth Angel who apart from being an Angel is also dead,' Ritsuko seemed to find what Shinji had told all those assembled to be totally preposterous. He found others nodding and murmuring their agreement.
He sighed as he surveyed all those in the room. Of course Doctor Akagi was there. Next to her sat the bridge crew Shigeru Aoba, Makato Hyouga and Maya Ibuki. Miss Ibuki seemed to be the most in favour of what Ritsuko had said. Finally there was the desk at which his father sat. On his right stood the Sub-commander and on the left was Misato.
`Why do you doubt him? Why do you doubt me? Is it your own insecurities that cloud your judgement?' as he said this he saw Ritsuko tensing as she glanced briefly at his father. Was it that his father was her insecurity? What was going on between them since he'd noticed that it went further than just a working relationship.
`The Third Child is right. I would like you all to leave so I can talk to him myself,' said Gendo as he removed his glasses and set them down on his desk. This was a surprise to everyone assembled except for his Sub-commander. Even Ritsuko seemed to go pale at this action and soon it was just Gendo and Shinji.
`Father what do you want?' asked Shinji meekly as the courage he'd mustered faltered in the face of his father. Gendo however seemed to relax as he started cleaning his glasses. Shinji felt himself smiling since this was the first time he'd seen his father smile, although he hoped his father had smiled that time he gave him praise over the radio.
`Shinji there are four reasons why I believe you. First is the general lack of trust I have for the council. Second is that I know what the final Angel was and I know he wouldn't have any reason to lie. Thirdly is that try as he might Chairman Keel wasn't able to hide the true prophecies from me. Ryouji Kaji may have been a spy but he worked both ways and got me everything I wanted,' Gendo paused to replace his glasses on his face. He didn't however continue and Shinji assumed he was waiting for him to ask.
`What is the fourth reason?' asked Shinji as his father just stared at him for a minute. `If there is a fourth reason that is,' added Shinji after realising he'd sounded like he was giving his father, Commander of NERV, orders. But Gendo didn't even notice this as he rearranged his glasses.
`You are my son. I trust you as much as I trust myself and more than I trust anyone else on this base. Including Kozou even though I've known him a long time,' Gendo saw the expression on his sons face and decided to elaborate on who he meant. `I mean Sub-commander Fuyutsuki as you know him,'
`Why do you trust me more than them?' asked Shinji and Gendo obviously had been expecting this question from the way he flexed his hands. He looked at Shinji with a expression that caused Shinji to squirm uncomfortably under his glare.
`All of the people on this base have pasts. Inspector Kaji was able to get me information on most and I now know who most of the SEELE agents are inside NERV. However there are others that surely escaped him or he chose to ignore. And others may put personal feelings before all else. I know of Major Katsuragi's hatred for Angels and I know of Doctor Akagi's feelings towards her mother, who is now the Magi. However you I know everything about. I know you fantasise about killikng me and I know you have discussed it with the Fourth. But...' he paused to think for a second.
`You will not do anything about it because you live to hear praise from me. And with me dead you could not fulfil that. And for that I am thankful Shinji. You are dismissed,' Shinji turned to leave confused on whether his father had insulted him or praised him. And whether Gendo had truly thankful for it.
`And one last thing First Child. Good work on finding out Old Man Keel's plans,' Shinji felt his heart skip a beat at his father's praise and totally ignored who was walking in through the door as he left out of it. Subconsciously he assumed it was Sub-commander Fuyutsuki but he was very wrong.
`Ah Commander Ikari long time no see. I'm sorry I'm late but I had to work on a disguise,' said the figure who had long blond hair in a ponytail. However it was definitely Ryouji Kaji even though he had a clean shaven chin, nobody else could slouch like he could.
`Inspector Kaji. I like the look, but were not here to talk about that. It seems that the prophecies have been verified and the next wave is soon to come. I trust you know what to do?' asked Gendo back to his normal tone and the way he held his hands together and looked over the top of them.
`I refuse to fight. I can't fight anyway. And I don't want anything to do with NERV. Now out of my way I need to use the toilet,' Shinji was roughly pushed aside as Asuka rushed into the bathroom. He knew that would be her response but had hoped it would be otherwise.
He was the only Child now. Number Five had been an Angel and met his death. Number Four's Evangelion was taken over by an Angel and the resulting fight cost him an arm and a leg, which would be funny if not for it being true. Number Two was still traumatised and refused to go near NERV. And Number One was gone. She hadn't turned up for her physical and when Ibuki had gone round to get her she was nowhere to be seen and the apartment seemed to have been abandoned for some time.
Maybe she couldn't come back because of what she was. She had an AT field. The Magi had classified her as a Code Blue. Whatever Rei was she was an Angel. And as Kensuke said Angels had to be destroyed. But could he have brought himself to kill the First Child like he had killed the Fifth? And more importantly why was he talking like his father?
`Hey Shinji I heard Asuka refusing to fight again. You've got to convince her and do it soon. The Angel will attack tomorrow,' came the words of Misato from the main room where she was guzzling down beer.
`I don't think I could say anything that could convince her to pilot again,' said Shinji as he joined her in the main room. She offered him a beer but he declined instead deciding on some sort of soft drink that he'd found right at the back of the fridge. Obviously the remains of when she'd tried to not drink beer. That day he decided he preferred drunk Misato to sober Misato.
`She'll come around. You know that piloting was the only time she felt alive. She'll see you and she'll know that she has to beat you,' Misato ruffled his hair as her words brought him some comfort. However would she instead focus her life on distancing herself from Eva and trying to become something more than just one of the pilots?
`Okay I think you're right. Now saying that sounded wrong,' Shinji grinned as Misato realised what he was implying and soon he became the target of her tickling. A flush was heard and then a cough brought them out of this brief encounter. Standing by the bathroom was Asuka who seemed to be grinning as she looked at them.
`And Misato you ask if I want to be alone with Shinji. I never knew you like younger men. Although at your age most men are,' soon Asuka found herself on the receiving end of Misato's tickling. Shinji found himself wondering if he wanted Asuka to go back to piloting. She could be hurt and he didn't want that for her. It was probably best this way.
Shinji looked over at where Ritsuko was writing down something while all four Evangelions were being prepped for battle. Shinji sighed knowing that in two separate rooms Asuka and Touji were being asked if they would pilot. Of course it wouldn't be polite questioning and neither would give up. But NERV only wanted one of them to do it.
`Doctor Akagi what are The Gates of Hell?' Shinji finally decided to ask someone about what Kaworu had told him. And after her falling out with NERV, and specifically his father, he doubted she'd hold back.
`Well if Heaven's Gate held Terminal Dogma where Lilith was held,' she saw him wondering who Lilith was. `The Adam in Terminal Dogma isn't Adam its Lilith. But Adam is in this base. And he's behind the Gates of Hell,' she sighed at her explanation knowing Shinji would just come up with more questions.
But suddenly they heard a commotion and someone burst into the room. But who it was nobody could tell by the hordes of NERV security swarming all over whoever it was. But whoever was under them couldn't be any taller than Shinji as shown by the various glimpses of whoever it was. Suddenly one of the security fell of to reveal glasses and long yellow hair.
`Hey Shinji get these bastards off me. That one just groped me. Damn it,' Shinji smiled as his friend was finally brought down to the ground and they all jump on him in a pile. Eventually Ritsuko commanded them to get off the boy who came out with his hair sticking out and his glasses missing.
`What are you doing in here boy? I don't have time to babysit any kids,' said Ritsuko as she helped Kensuke up and put his glasses in his hand. But Kensuke just jumped up and down anxiously. He obviously had something to say.
`If none of the others will pilot I will. I'll do anything to save Touji from anymore pain. He's my best friend after all,' Kensuke bowed hastily hoping his politeness would win the blond woman over. She instead looked rather annoyed at this.
`No. The Marduk Report didn't name you therefore I cannot let you pilot,' she put her foot down causing a moan to escape from Kensuke's mouth. That's when a new person appeared, one who seemed both new and old to him. He had a clean shaven face and a blond ponytail and stood there in a Hawaiian shirt and shorts.
`Is that you Kaji?' asked Shinji unsure of whether this was actually Misato's ex-lover returned from the dead. However the confused expression on his face put doubts on whether it was the melon growing spy.
`Actually my name is Takao Nyoichi. I'm the new Personnel Officer. And funnily enough the Marduk Report just named the Sixth Pilot. Some kid called Kensuke Aida,' despite his disproval of being Kaji the expression that crossed his face as Ritsuko's contorted in disgust made him sure it had to be him.
Kensuke meanwhile had thrown himself down onto his knees thanking the man profusely. He of course acted very Kaji like in his exuberant acceptance of the praise. Ritsuko meanwhile was making a call seeing if they could change the settings for Eva 03 to those of Kensuke's, if it was true that all his class was candidates then it would explain why they already had their data on record. And it would give him an excuse for how he knew that the Marduk Report was false.
`Shinji will you show Mr Aida to the changing rooms and get him a plug suit. We weren't expecting to have to use a Sixth Child but we have a plugsuit just in case. Just slap it on him and get to the Cage,' Ritsuko waved her hand hoping they'd go away but Kensuke still had one more question for the woman.
`Which Evangelion will I be in?' asked Kensuke eagerly already knowing more about all five Evagelions, including Unit 04 the one that exploded in America, than Shinji did. Of course Shinji knew he would be in Touji's Unit 03.
`Unit 03, now go. The Angel could come at any time,' she quickly hurried the two boys out of the room and as they left Shinji thought he saw her turning angrily to Mr Nyoichi. Obviously she also knew he was Kaji but how had he survived and why didn't he want anyone knowing him?
`Oh yeah this is so cool. I finally get to pilot an Eva, my lifelong dream. I have got to remember to thank Mr Nyoichi when we're done,' said Kensuke excitedly as he pressed the button that caused his yellow and black plugsuit, complete with large 06 on the front.
Shinji felt very happy for his friend and worried at the same time. All his other friends had gone through some bad stuff with the Evas and he didn't want it to happen to Kensuke as well. And what if they them went after Hikari. That would be all of them. But he knew that nothing could dissuade Kensuke.
`Okay Mr Aida. Time to go see the Evangelion you'll be piloting today,' Shinji put on a joke voice that caused his friend to laugh uncontrollably. And that's when the sirens went off. The Angel had been located and it was on its way. Grabbing Kensuke Shinji set off running towards the Evangelion bay.
`Okay I'll see you later Shinji and good luck,' Kensuke took off as they reached a junction towards the room that led to where the fourth of the Evangelions, Unit 03 however, stood encased. Shinji found himself wondering how he'd known it was down their but thankful for him wishing him luck.
`Yeah good luck to you too Kensuke. Try not to get killed I want at least one safe friend,' called Shinji but Kensuke was long gone. Shinji sighed as he ran over to get into his own Eva. The giant purple and green figure that had been designated as Eva 01 stood in front of him staring down at him despite being an object it seemed to have a will of it's own. And that will was that of his mother it seemed.
Eva 01 shot up on the shoot towards the surface of Tokyo-3. He knew that in a parallel tunnel Kensuke would be roaring with pleasure as he shot along in the black and white Eva 03. In fact Shinji realised he could hear him over the communications. In the little screen he could see Kensuke bouncing up and down inside the plug.
`Hey Kensuke we're nearly there. I hope you're ready for this because whatever's out there is going to come at us. And it's going to come at us fast and hard,' Shinji looked down at the screen as Kensuke composed himself although his fanboyish attitude continued although it was restricted to looking at the buttons in front of him.
`Okay man of course I'm ready. I've been ready since I met you. And I've studied everything you've said and what I've read,' Kensuke seemed pretty proud of this although he didn't seem too fond of the LCL and still gagged as he breathed it in.
`Actually for his first time he's doing quite well. Forty is more than enough to pilot it and although he's not near your eighty four he's above what you were first time,' came the quiet voice Shinji recognised as Maya Ibuki. Her face appeared on one screen and Misato's appeared on another.
`Well I have a visual description of the Angel. It's apparently flying but everywhere it goes its dropping acid. I'm not sure whether it's enough to damage an Eva but don't take any risks,' said Misato from her screen as yet another joined it, this one of Gendo who just flexed his hands and seemed to be more interested in observing than saying anything.
`It has been designated Af Bri, the Angel of Rain. Be careful Shinji,' Gendo's screen disappeared after those words and Shinji felt a lot better that his father had showed concern for him. His father seemed to be warming up to him. Which was especially good because there were only a couple of weeks until the anniversary of his mother's death.
Suddenly the Evangelion stopped indicating it had reached the top. Beside it he could see Eva 03 grabbing a nearby rifle. Shinji did the same as the looked up at the skies. It would come because it had too. And as he stared up he saw the first drops of rain falling from the sky. But they were orange in colour. The Angel of Rain had come to Tokyo-3 looking for revenge for its brothers.
Soon the Angel appeared itself. It was vaguely bird shaped with an elongated beak. It had a human like torso with two ragged wings. Two arms hung off where the nipples would be on a person and ended in huge hands with three claws. Its short stubby legs also ended in three claws but they were too small to be any use in walking and were probably just fro show. Finally it was greyish with bits of purple in colour and had small pores all over its body.
These pores opened up as more orange rain poured out. Neither Shinji nor Kensuke had enough time to register that this acid was corrosive to Eva's before both their screams filled the air. The second coming had came and with it came another chance for Third Imapct.
