We take so much for granted in these United States
Some of the rights we have acquired are abused and cause debate
In a country so diverse all opinions can be preached
But ignorance seems bliss in a land of free speech

When free to say what we wish, we can be a tad disarming
What we're free to say to others can be brash and quite alarming
(not to mention quite un-charming…)
When we're free to speak our minds, our minds can drift away
When we put ego and frustration in the words we chose to say

So we're free to make a statement, vent our feelings, feel “released”
Then we're free to be an asshole or politely say our piece
We can be a little rude but, in a compensating way
We'd go “There's freedom of speech in this country” to defend the words we say
Which, at times, can be relentless and when the public's had enough
They may take the slurs and threats you throw and try to call your bluff
(when you disregard what they may can take to heart as “unimportant stuff”)
Then you're free to mind your manners in such an untimely event
Or fell freer still and activate the right to remain silent

Yes, the rights and privileges we abuse are oh so easy to find
But in this “Land of Freedom” we're also free to use our minds
