Love School Part 2: The Break-Up
Chapter Five: The Basketball Player, The Billionaire, and the Bug Part II

(An Excerpt From The Journal of Shouta) March 8th
…I had a dream last night about my mother. That she and my dad had come back from wherever they’ve been for the last 5 years, and they were at home with me and my brother again. Honestly, it made me kinda depressed once I woke up. People have said “hey, they hadn’t written you in over a year, you might need to prepare for the worst,” but I just can’t seem to come to terms with the fact my mom and dad might actually be dead. And I don’t think Akira can either. That’s why that third bedroom has been left untouched since the day they left…

“Kaito,” Mr. Chiase called, knocking on his son’s door. “There’s a visitor for you.”

The eldest son came out his room, looking at the couch where his visitor was, Haruki.

“Me and you need to talk for a minute,” Haruki spoke, before grabbing Kaito by the wrist and leading him outside, before closing the front door behind him.

“Haruki… what’s up?” Kaito questioned with a worried look on his face.

“I’m in trouble, and you’re in even more trouble,” he said with a stern look on his face.

“Why?”

“Because you know how last night I told you that the camera system on my dad’s laptop was down?” Haruki began, obviously struggling to keep his voice at a reasonable level, because even though they were outside on the porch, they could be heard if they were too loud.

“Yeah…”

“Well apparently while my dad’s computer was at the shop, my mom had the surveillance system on her laptop, meaning they know everything,”

Kaito gulped, and felt as he was literally breaking into a cold sweat.

“She checked the video when she got home I suspect, because next thing I know I was in so much trouble… But that’s only half of what I came here for. The other half, is something else my mom found on the tape,” Haruki continued on, now beginning to trip up on his words, before looking away.

Kaito noticed tears forming at the boy’s eyes. “Haruki…”

The red-head reached for his boyfriend’s hand, but was swatted away. “You know what you did…. What you said! ‘Hachirou is my number one…’ and ‘Its only a matter of time now, Hachirou’s free for the taking’! Whats wrong with you? I really loved you, I opened myself to you, and you only were with me just to pass the time along! Once Hachirou was free, you were going to break up with me WEREN’T YOU?!”

Now Kaito could only stare, dumb-founded, into his boyfriend’s (or soon to be ex-boyfriend’s) angry eyes, speechless. He’d never seen Haruki this upset, and if he knew it’d upset him this much, he’d probably would have rethought this. He couldn’t hardly take this. It literally pained him to see Haruki with his face so red and tears streaming down his cheeks. Kaito almost wanted to cry himself… he was so caught up in running after Hachirou, he didn’t realize the path of destruction he was leaving behind him.

He’s better off staying silent, he figured. ‘I’m sorry’ isn’t quite a big enough bandage to heal this wound.

“Hachirou probably doesn’t even like you… then again I don’t think I could see why anyone would. You’re selfish… and we’re through,” Haruki hissed, before quickly making his leave from the porch where they first kissed… to hopefully never set foot again.

It was a while before Kaito could even make his way back into the house, back into his room, so he could spend all day trying to convince himself that Hachirou was worth all this pain.

Wasn’t he?

***

Makoto drove Hachirou crazy, but in a good way.

Every day spent with the light brown-haired boy was fun, and they’d only known each other for like a week. After the drive-in movies, they went on all sorts of fun outings, like ice skating (it was still cold enough), neighborhood restaurants, even teen clubs, which Hachirou had never set foot in before. Still, they never called the outings ‘dates’ and they hadn’t kissed yet (besides that kiss on the cheek Makoto did, which really didn’t count), and they weren’t a couple. Even though Hachirou really wished they could be sometimes, but he didn’t want to rush things.

One afternoon, the blond was laying on his bed, staring out the window absently as he waited for Makoto to come over. His brothers happened to notice, and this seemed like the key time to pick with their middle brother.

“What are you doing, cloud-watching?” Kurou asked.

“No, just… thinking,” Hachirou responded, without moving a muscle.

“About what?” Shichirou joined in.

“Thinking about how to make the first move,”

Shichirou and Kurou exchanged a silent look. This is their brother right? The former Mr. Eight-Guys-In-One-Night. How can he not know how to make the first move?

“Well anyways what ever happened to that cute girl you bring over sometimes?” Kurou questioned anxiously.

“She’s coming over today, actually,”

“Yes!” Kurou quietly exclaimed to himself before leaving the room.

Once their youngest brother was out of earshot, Hachirou remarked, “I thought he knew…?”

“Oh well, don’t tell him just yet, it’ll be fun when he finds out Makoto’s actually a he…” Shichirou laughed.

After the laughter subsided, then Shichirou began his own round of questions, that he knew his younger brother would answer because lately they’ve actually gotten rather close. “So, what kind of move are you trying to make on the little he-she?”

“Shichirou!” Hachirou exclaimed, rather upset at the name he used to describe his Mako.

“Sorry… but I was just judging how’d defensively you’d react. Anyways, I don’t understand what makes Makoto so different that you can’t even make a move on him, you’ve done it dozens of times before.”

“Because, the goal before was to just persuade them in my bed for a night or two, but someone like Makoto requires a bit more tact. I wanna kiss him… but I just can’t do it. I feel like all we’ve become so far is really close friends.”

“Then maybe you should give it a bit more time? Y’know, like a year?”

“A year? Wait a year to have sex with him?”

“It’s going to be very hard for you to find the one for you if you can’t even be patient enough to wait to have sex. Most couples wait about a year… or even until they get married.

Married??? That’s a helluva long time there bro,” Hachirou whined.

“I’d be shocked if you even waited a year, honestly. But the promiscuousness is a no-go brother, sure it might feel good now, but when you get older, you’ll end up feeling like the person in musical chairs left without the chair. Which, I imagine, feels pretty stupid.”

“Yeah I get that… but how about you and Takeshi? You two are already having sex,”

“It’s a slightly different situation, but I do agree that I should’ve waited. I guess all it shows is that some people will do dumb stuff just because their best friend wanted them to, including sex.”

“Wait, so you didn’t wanna do it with him?” Hachirou asked.

“In a way I really did, although I knew it was wrong, and I kind of didn’t at the same time. Truthfully, I just wanted him to love me in the same way I loved him, but sometimes I’m just not too sure,” Shichirou sighed, before sitting on the edge of the bed.

“What’s there to be sure about he loves-!” Hachirou blurted, before clamping his hands over his mouth, remembering his promise.

“He loves…?”

“…Sushi! He told me himself,” Hachirou hurriedly lied.

“Hachirou… he’s allergic to seafood,” Shichirou replied bluntly, before eyeing his brother suspiciously.

“Okay, okay. He told me that he really does love you, and he wants to be with you, but you both have your futures in football and stuff to worry about. That’s why he didn’t want me to tell you, so you wouldn’t worry needlessly,” Hachirou confessed.

The older brother looked taken aback at all this sudden information, Takeshi loves him?!

“But you can’t tell him I told, because it was an accident and I really didn’t mean to-” the younger blond was interrupted by his older brother squeezing him to death from relief.

“But Hachirou I didn’t really think he truly loved me and wanted to be with me! I’m so glad you told me, now I don’t have to worry anymore, and he thought not telling me would make me worry…” Shichirou cried.

“Well that’s all fine and dandy for you, but like I said, don’t tell him I told, he’ll crush me,”

“I won’t let him,”

A ring of the doorbell briefly interrupted Shichirou’s joyous scene, before Hachirou unlatched himself from his brother’s grasp and headed downstairs to go answer it.

Unfortunately, Kurou had already beaten him to it, of course trying to flirt with his future man… kind of. Ok well, Hachirou was just being super defensive. But still, even if Kurou does think Makoto is a girl, he doesn’t like people touching his property, and he’s already pretty much got Makoto marked as his.

“Man I just can’t get over how much you all look alike!” Makoto remarked upon looking at Kurou.

Kurou, being overwhelmingly polite, invited Makoto in and offered to get him something to drink as Hachirou made his way downstairs.

“Your little brother is being really nice…” Makoto pointed out once the younger brother was in the kitchen, out of ear shot.

“Its only because he thinks you’re a girl, and he likes you. He’s actually a real homophobe,” Hachirou explained.

“So when are you gonna tell him?”

“Eh… eventually. I just can’t wait to see the look on his face when he finds out,” he snickered.

“Hachirou that’s mean! …I like the way you think,” Makoto laughed, grinning.

The two immediately hushed as Kurou came back into the room, and just at that moment, Hachirou’s cell phone rang.

“Hello?” he answered.

“Yeah it’s Kanon. See, I don’t normally call you and stuff, but I need your help real bad. We need your help real bad.”

“We?”

“The whole family! See, Kaito is very upset about something and won’t hardly leave his room for anything, and if he does he gets snippy with people. He’s also been blasting that awful, depressing screamo crap he listens to for days on end where you can’t even hear yourself think anymore! Mariko and daddy are really pissed but they can’t even get in his room, so we figured that you might be able to get through to him… so can you come over now?”

“I guess,” Hachirou sighed.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you! See you in a bit!” the hyper teen bid farewell.

Hachirou hung up his cell phone and turned to Makoto. “I have a bit of an emergency so I need to head to my best friend’s house, do you mind coming with me?”

“Sure, I don’t mind,” Makoto agreed.

Kurou looked peeved but the two older boys didn’t even notice as they left out the door immediately.

***

A mere 10 minutes later, Hachirou and Makoto stood at the door of the Chiase residence. A now happy, yet exhausted looking Kanon answered the door, practically dragging the blond and his companion inside. The first thing they noticed was the loud, head-pounding rock music.

“Hachirou I love this song!” Makoto exclaimed, smiling.

“You won’t like it when it’s played from nine in the morning to ten at night. I can’t tolerate it when he gets depressed like this, it drives everyone practically insane and I doubt he even cares. I wonder what the hell happened…”

“That’s what I’d like to know. And what I’m about to find out,” Hachirou announced, before gesturing Makoto to follow him past the dining room and down the hallway to Kaito’s room. He knocked hard, making sure he’d actually be able to hear the knock.

“Fuck off!” was the only reply.

“Uh yeah, sorry you have to see him like this. This is my long time best friend who’s usually really great to be around but… just brace yourself, okay?” Hachirou apologized, before knocking again, while shouting, “It’s Hachirou, open up! I came to visit!”

There was a pause before the door unlocked, to reveal a red-eyed Kaito, cheeks stained with tears. “Who the hell is she?” he spat, pointing at Makoto.

“That doesn’t matter right now, I wanna know what’s the matter with you. I’ve never seen you so awful in all the years I’ve known you,”

“Oh like that really makes me feel any better, thanks. Just… come in and close the door quickly, before anyone else tries to come in and bother me,” Kaito said, shooing Hachirou and Makoto in before slamming the door.

The room was a mess, but Hachirou decided to disregard it, and just sat next to Kaito on the bed, while Makoto made his distance and sat in the desk chair from across the room.

“So? Talk to me,” Hachirou began immediately, although speaking low so Makoto couldn’t hear. It wasn’t as though he liked keeping things from someone he liked, but whatever was going on was Kaito’s private business, which must be kept as such.

Kaito looked Hachirou in the eyes, before hearing Haruki’s echoing words in his head, ‘Hachirou probably doesn’t even like you…’ He quickly looked away from him, trying to get himself together, before telling Hachirou about what happened the other day.

“Kaito, I’m sorry about that happening to you…”

“Thanks, but I don’t know how to move on!”

“You need to be happy with you before you can be happy with someone else. I think you need to take some time to think and get over this before you’re ready to really move on. Most of all, I think you need to talk to someone. It doesn’t have to be me, or your parents, just… someone,”

“Why are you saying that?”

“Because I think you need it, and it might make you feel better to let everything out instead of holding all the emotions in, it’s not healthy,” he explained as he walked over to the stereo and turned it down to a reasonable level.

“…Who do you want me to talk to?”

“I’ve got just the person for you, if he agrees. But don’t worry about it until we go back to school okay?”

Kaito nodded, sighing. “So who’s she?”

His name is Makoto, and tell me he isn’t just the cutest?” Hachirou exclaimed, grinning.

“…You have weird taste,” Kaito scowled. “But if that’s the kind of guys you’re into… you know, girly ones, then so be it.”

“Well anyways, I’ve got to be going so no more problems?”

“No, I’m alright. I just need to be alone for awhile,” Kaito reassured his best friend.

“Good. Make sure you call me next time you’re feeling crappy, that’s what I’m for!” Hachirou told him, before leading Makoto out the room with him and closing the door.

Before they could make it out of the house thought, Mr. Chiase, Mariko, and Kanon were all waiting in the living room, waiting to see how everything went.

“…I recommend you guys just kinda… lay off, y’know? Sorry to sound so mean, but the last thing he needs is a bunch of smothering, or he’ll just start acting out again. Once he’s ready to come out and talk, he will,” Hachirou explained.

“Alright, thank you,” Mr. Chiase sighed disappointedly.

Before the blond started getting too depressed looking at the family, he and Makoto made their way out the house, before they hopped in the older teen’s car and drove off.

The next day, Monday morning was a rough day for most. It was always hard to get up for school on a Monday, no matter how often you do it.

It was especially hard for Kaito, because he absolutely didn’t want to see Haruki, even though he knew he was going to for sure and it was going to be so hard for him. Quite honestly, he didn’t even want to leave his room.

Hachirou was happy and eager to wake up today, because after school he’d get to hang out with Makoto. The older teen invited him to come along to this club meeting with him. Honestly, Hachirou never thought to ask what the club was, but he really didn’t care as long as he spent time with him. Plus, it would give him a chance to learn his interests.

Shouta was also ready for the day, as long as he would get to see Ryuunosuke.

Anyways, the school day began at the same time it always did in the same way it always did, in homeroom with Mr. Kojima. Normally they didn’t ever do much but talked while the announcements were going on, and now Kojima was texting on his cell phone to- guess who?

Kaito, who’s desk was in the back of the room, sat back there with his head down so he didn’t have to look at Haruki anymore. Hachirou, seeing his friend like that, reminded the blond of what he needed to do.

He headed to the texting teacher’s desk and said, “Do you think you help me help someone who really needs somebody to talk to?”

“Who?” Mr. Kojima questioned, while his thumbs were still moving.

“Kaito,”

The teacher looked up at the student in question and winced in response to the sad sight. “What happened to him?”

“Real bad break-up,”

“Geez, you people can’t keep it together for a second, can you?” Kojima commented.

“Please, just talk with him? I think he needs a more adult opinion because he more-or-less doesn’t really listen to me,” Hachirou pleaded.

“Um… I guess you can tell him to come down sixth hour, that’s my lunch period,”

…I didn’t realize until reading some of my older journal entries that I, was delusional. Sure I still like Hachirou, but trying to get Haruki out of the way once Hachirou was free… It was just wrong. Plain wrong. I have no clue what kind of monster I’m becoming, but soon it’ll be to where I can’t even stand to take the pain I cause anymore…

A.N: It seems like this chapter really sucks... I'm sorry TT_TT. It kind of seems like I didn't try hard enough, but I don't know, I hope it was up to par for everyone.
