Chapter 8: The Games We Play
Kel's P.O.V
Kel sat in history class listening to his teacher ramble on about ancient times in western civilization, somehow managing to get more details wrong then right. Kel felt the need to correct the man, considering that he was actually there during that time period, but knew doing so would only arose many suspicions concerning his age.
Suddenly, he felt a light tap on his shoulder, knowing already who it was; he fought the urge to roll his eyes while refusing to turn around. “Why can't this girl leave me alone?” he thought despairingly.
“Hey, would it be too much trouble to bother you for an extra pen?” Mia said smiling sweetly at him.
“Yes, it would.” He replied in a clipped tone.
“Yeah, well…I'm doing it anyway,” she said her smile widening.
“Are you seriously telling me that you got out of bed this morning to attend an institution, where writing is a requirement mind you, and you didn't think to bring something to write with?” he asked in a bored tone.
“No, I have one. I'm just looking for ways to make you talk to me,” she admitted shamelessly, her smile never faltering.
Kel was never one to be aggressive towards women, that was Chase's department, yet he's never wanted to slap a bitch as much as he did right now. She was the most infuriating woman he has ever met, and as much as he despised tainted demons, he just couldn't bring himself to actually hurt her.
“God, please give me the strength not to kill her.” He thought before turning around to face her.
“Do you enjoy coming off desperate?” he asked arching one eye brow.
“You say desperate, I say ambitious.” She replied with a smirk. “When I see something I want, I have no shame in fighting for it, and right now…” Mia said as she slowly leaned forward over her desk, bringing her face an inch away from his. If Kel felt uncomfortable with her closeness, he gave no indication as his gaze locked with hers.
“…I see, I like and I want.” She said smoothly with a sexy smirk, her eyes crimson eyes gazing deep into his ocean blue ones.
“I swear…she's like Chase with breasts and a vagina.” He thought dryly.
Kel would be lying if he said he didn't find her boldness attractive, it was a rare quality in most women, who would usually rather be pursued by the man and not the other way around. But Kel quickly pushed those thoughts away, she was one of them and he refused to go down that road.
“You're not my type.” He stated firmly.
“I'm everyone's type,” she countered confidently.
“Clearly not everyone,” He replied before turning back around in his seat.
“We'll see…” he heard her quietly whisper for him to hear.
The lunch bell rang, dismissing the class. Kel stood to leave noticing how Mia purposely waited to walk through the doorway the same time he did, brushing her body against his in the process. Kel shot her a glare as she walked by, which she returned with an innocent smile. He shook his head, knowing full well that she wasn't going to give up easily, and made his way to the lunch room.
Chase's P.O.V
Chase walked into the cafeteria, his eyes quickly scanning the area. He was a little annoyed at himself for what happened between him and the witch. Why was he so pleased to hear she didn't have a man? It's not like it would have made a difference if she did because if he wanted her she would be his, man or no man. Did that mean he wanted her? He didn't know why, but the thought of her with that little wolf shit made his blood boil. And to make matters worse, he helped her pick up her books like some kind of…gentlemen.
Chase couldn't keep the scowl off his face at the very thought, and thinking about the little witch wasn't helping much either. He didn't need to look to see Kel walk up beside him, the two walking into the lunch line without so much as acknowledging the other's presence. From anyone else's perspective, it would appear as if the two hated each other, but it was the opposite. The two never used the word “love” towards anyone in their entire existence aside from each other and Craven, not even their own father has been granted such an honor, not that he would care of course. The brothers didn't voice the word often, but that didn't mean they didn't feel it or show it from time to time. They were just entirely too comfortable with each other, which tends to happen when you spend an eternity with someone.
“Dude, that Panther chick is totally checking out your ass right now,” Chase said smirking, nudging his brother towards his line of sight.
Kel just simply rolled his eyes; not bothering to turn around and confirm what he knew was probably true.
“You know…she's kinda hot. You should fuck her.” Chase suggested bluntly.
“No, I'm good,” Kel informed him as the two placed random foods on their trays. Although they didn't need human food to survive, they could still eat it as a means to blend in.
“Well, if you don't want her... can I fuck her?” Chased asked seriously despite the grin he was still wearing.
“Go for it,” Kel replied his tone bored as he approached the front to pay for their food.
“That'll be $8.50 please,” the woman said from behind the counter.
Kel locked his gaze with the woman, his pupils dilating at he spoke “You're going to let us eat for free whenever you see us.” He ordered in a hypnotic voice, compelling the woman.
The woman suddenly smiled, “It's on the house guys,” she informed cheerfully before turning to the next person in line.
Chase and Kel began walking towards an empty table when Mia ran up to them. “Hey guys, wanna sit with us?” she asked them, though her eyes were on Kel.
“No—”
“We would love to,” Chase said with a smile cutting his brother off.
Kel shot him a glare. “I hate you.” He thought to his brother.
“I love you too, sunshine. Besides, if I'm gonna fuck her I need to work my charm sooner or later” Chase shot back before turning to follow Mia, pulling Kel with him.
As they approached the table, Chase noticed Sage sit up a little straighter in her chair, clearly surprised to see him and his brother joining them. Mia took her seat next to Sage as he sat across from Mia, leaving Kel to sit across from Sage.
Chase took note of how Mia frowned slightly while glancing at Kel, clearly not pleased with the seating arrangement which left him the furthest from her. Kel made it clear that he wouldn't be speaking to anyone at the table as he began occupying himself with his food.
“So, how do you guys like it here so far? Mia began, breaking the silence.
Chase knew his brother wasn't going to answer, which left him no choice. “It's been entertaining…this school has many interesting people,” he replied his eyes shifting to Sage, who blushed and quickly looked down at her food.
“Oh, you have no idea,” Mia continued, “But, I gotta say…you two are definitely the most interesting, not to mention hottest, ones here. The whole school is talking about you.” She informed smirking at them.
“Well, I would ask who's the hottest girl in this place, but I think I'm already looking her,” Chase said smoothly shooting Mia his most charming smile.
Mia blushed lightly, not expecting to be hit on by the other brother. Chase noticed Sage grip her fork tightly, refusing to look up from her tray. He also noticed the look that briefly crossed Kel's face upon seeing Mia blush at his comment.
“This might work out nicely,” Chase thought mischievously to himself. He knew his brother had a thing for the Panther demon sitting across from him, but his pride would never allow him to see past the whole “tainted demon” thing without a little push in the right direction, which is exactly what Chase intended to do.
“Um…thank you,” Mia said hesitantly while sparing a quick glance at Sage. “I can't believe you two are brothers, you don't look alike,” she said trying to change the subject.
“I look like my mother mostly, Kel takes after our father.” Chase said repeating his words from earlier with Stefan.
“Your father must be extremely good looking then,” Mia said trying to flirt with Kel.
Kel choked on his food as soon as the comment left her mouth, and Chase burst out laughing. Sage and Mia exchanged confused looks, clearly not getting the joke.
Their father was many things, but good-looking was not one of them. The three brothers had no mother; they were merely created from their father's essence, which meant they all took on their own individual appearances, thank god for that. Growing up with their father they all feared and respected him, but they could never love him. He was a bastard, plain and simple, a true demon above all others. And although they were proud to be his sons, they were grateful they shared no resemblance to the man what so ever.
Kel cleared his throat, trying to play off their little slip.
“Yeah he's…he's something to look at alright,” Chase replied with a smirk.
“If they ever saw father's face they would shit themselves…twice.” Chase thought to Kel.
“At least you're not the one who has to claim to look like him with a straight face.” Kel shot back bitterly.
Chase smirked to himself before getting back to the task at hand.
“So, Mia…I was thinking we should go out sometime. Maybe you could show me around this Friday,” Chase said smoothly, ignoring the other two at the table.
Mia smiled brightly at him before replying. “Chase, can I be honest with you?”
“Please do,” He replied with a grin.
“I don't like you,” she said bluntly, the smile never leaving her face.
Her comment managed to wipe the shit-eating grin right off of Chase's face, leaving him stunned. “Excuse me?” he replied as if he didn't hear her correctly the first time.
Kel's P.O.V
Kel fought to control his smile. He wasn't a fool, he knew what his brother was trying to do and he knew it wouldn't work. He had believed Mia earlier when she boldly informed him that she had set her sights on him and wouldn't stop until she got what she wanted. The girl clearly had a one track mind, and since Chase wasn't a part of her “see, like, want” equation, she had no interest in him. His brother, however, did not know this. Kel knew that Chase's shock right now had more to do with the fact that it has been quite some time since a woman has been able to resist his charm, with or without compulsion, rather than the impact of the rejection itself.
“Don't get me wrong, It's not like that” Mia continued, “I just have the hots for your brother here,” she said grinning at Kel.
Chase looked between the two, clearly impressed by the girl's boldness. “I like you,” he replied with a friendly smile.
Kel rolled his eyes, not the least bit surprised that Chase befriended the girl so quickly. “Gee, I wonder why,” he finally spoke, his voice dripping with sarcasm, “She's basically you without a penis dangling between her legs.”
“Oh, I don't know about that,” Chase continued, “I think she's got some serious balls…maybe even bigger then yours little brother.” Chase said grinning at Kel who shot him an evil glare in return.
“Don't worry baby, you're the only thing I want dangling between my legs,” Mia reassured winking suggestively at Kel, who remained unfazed by her comment.
Chase's grin widened as he began to chuckle, “Kel…marry this girl.”
Kel was beginning to feel uncomfortable as to where this conversation was heading, so he decided to become an active participant in the game his brother was playing. Kel had to admit that he was a little upset that Chase had managed to make Mia blush, but that was an issue he wasn't ready to deal with right now. He didn't rise to the bait Chase was clearly dangling in front of him, but he knew for a fact that Chase would rise to his.
If he wasn't sure that his brother liked the witch before, then he was certain of it now. Since arriving at the table, Chase has gone out of his way to avoid Sage's eyes, which was a little childish even for him. Even though he flirted with Mia as an attempt to make Kel jealous, he was trying to make her jealous as well. He liked her more then he let on, regardless of her being a witch or not.
“Pay back's a bitch,” Kel thought before looking up at Sage, who has yet to speak a word.
“You're awfully quiet…Sage right? Kel asked causing Sage to look up at him. When their eyes met he shot her a dazzling smile that rivaled Chase's and would make any girl weak in the knees. Such a smile on Kel's handsome face was rare to say the least, and he could already feel his brother's eyes glaring at him for what he was about to do.
“Um…yeah, I'm just not feeling talkative today,” she said quietly while picking at her now cold food.
“It's a fucking miracle,” Chase whispered to himself, but loudly enough for the others to hear. Sage glared at him before looking down again.
“Ignore him, he's an idiot,” Kel said evenly.
“I agree,” she replied her tone matching his.
Kel smirked devilishly, “Well, it seems we have much in common. If you don't mind me saying…you have beautiful eyes. I couldn't see them before because you were looking down.” He replied charmingly.
Sage couldn't seem to stop blushing. She knew that Mia liked Kel, and she had no interest in him, but a little attention from an attractive guy was always flattering. “Thank you,” she said with a bashful smile.
Chase and Mia were both now openly glaring at the two, their anger an apparent thing.
“No need to thank me, I was merely stating a fact. How about we leave these two alone and go for a little walk before lunch is over?” he suggested after hearing Chase's growl increase in volume.
Sage spared both Mia and Chase a glance before replying. “Sure, why not.” She agreed getting up from her seat. As Kel went to stand he felt Chase grab his arm roughly, slightly pulling him back down.
“Didn't you say you had something to do before class?” Chase practically growled out.
No…I don't think so,” Kel replied grinning down at his brother, “Why don't you keep Mia company while we're gone…you know, since you two are getting along so well.” Kel's smile only widened as Chase's eyes flashed dangerously.
“Yeah Mia, I'll see you in class,” Sage said turning to face her friend.
“But Sage…” Mia said her voice low. Sage told her not to worry before leaving the lunch room with Kel.
“That little bitch…”Chase grumbled under his breath while watching the two leave.
“Which one?” Mia asked glaring along side Chase in their direction.
“Both.” He replied.
Sage/Kel's P.O.V
Sage had a feeling that Kel wasn't really flirting with her in the lunch room. He had never shown interest in her before, so why start now? She wasn't naïve; she knew it had something to do with Chase flirting with Mia. She wasn't angry at her best friend, not in the least. She knew how Mia felt about Kel and the only reason she agreed to the walk in the first place was to put in a good word, which she would have to explain to her friend later.
What she didn't understand was why Kel was doing this. She knew it couldn't be to make Chase jealous because she knew for a fact that he hated her… that much was clear in the lunch room when he so obviously ignored her. She silently berated herself for thinking that he might be a nice guy deep down after he helped her pick up her books earlier in class.
“I'm such a dumbass,” she thought to herself.
She then turned to Kel, noticing how he hasn't spoken a word or even cracked a smile since they left the cafeteria.
“From flirty to expressionless…he and Chase have some serious PMS issues that they should consider seeing someone about,” she thought to herself before seeing Kel slightly smirked as if he could somehow hear her thoughts.
“So…” Sage began not really sure what to say.
“You like my brother,” Kel said unexpectedly. Sage stopped walking, shocked by the words which he so bluntly stated.
“What…no— I mean...I” she stuttered her face now a deep shade of red.
Kel smirked, not wanting to make her suffer any longer then she had to. “It's okay, he likes you too.” He informed casually as if he was merely telling her about the weather.
Sage didn't know what to say. She always just assumed Chase didn't like her because of the way he acts towards her.
“He does?” she asked skeptically arching her eye brow.
“Yes, I know he doesn't act like it but that's just how he is.” He said sensing her disbelief.
“What is he, seven? This isn't kindergarten where you bully a girl because you like her,” she replied her anger slowly rising to the surface.
Kel laughed softly. “It's not like that, he just doesn't like witches, which is why he's such a dick to you.” He explained.
“Well excuse the fuck out of me for being born a witch, I'll just tell my mother to do a spell to turn back time and have her magically push a demon out of her vagina instead!” she shouted her voice dripping with sarcasm.
“No need to be dramatic,” Kel said with a blank expression. “Like I said, he likes you. You just need to take a different approach.”
“Such as,” she asked curiously.
“Kiss him,” he said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
Sage looked at him silently for a moment, trying to decide if he was serious or not.
“I'm sorry?” she replied.
“If you kiss him and he kisses you back then you'll know he likes you,” he explained. “Chase may be a flirt, but he won't kiss anyone he doesn't have feelings for, not even if he's fucking them.”
“He would fuck someone even though he doesn't like them?” she asked clearly turned off by that little detail of information.
Kel paused, realizing his mistake. He didn't mean to say that, it had just slipped out. Chase would fuck girls he didn't like all the time, not because he wanted a quick fuck, but because he liked the way their blood tasted while he was doing it. He always said he never kissed them because he didn't want to become attached to his meal. Usually, he would compel his victims to enjoy it, or simply rape them, whichever got him fed the quickest. But Kel obviously couldn't tell her that since it would, not only blow their cover, but scare her off, which is something he did not want to do since he had a feeling his brother really liked this girl.
He knew he had no choice; he had to compel her to forget that last part. There was nothing he could say to play off his mistake that wouldn't make his brother sound like the man-whore he so clearly was.
Kel turned to look to lock their gaze. “Forget what I just said, it's not important,” he commanded his voice deep and mesmerizing.
Sage looked at him intently, her own eyes squinting slightly. “You just basically told me that the guy I like is a whore, how can I forget that? And what's wrong with your eyes?” she questioned.
“What the fuck?” Kel thought completely taken aback.
“My eyes…what about them?” he asked cautiously.
“You're pupils just dilated and went back to normal…it was weird. Does that happen often?” she continued to question ignoring his stunned expression.
“Oh fuck me, how is this possible? She shouldn't have seen that…why didn't it work?” Kel thought anxiously, alarms going off in his mind.
“Must have been the lighting or something…listen just try the whole kiss thing and see how it works out,” he said quickly needing to go find Chase.
“And if he pushes me away?” she asked.
“Then my bad,” he replied turning to leave.
“Wait, so are you the same way? If a girl you like kisses you, will you kiss her back?” she asked a mischievous smile forming on her face.
Kel slowly narrowed his gaze at her, knowing full well where this was going. “Don't you dare.” He warned in a low voice.
“Mia likes you a lot… you should give her a chance. Besides, I saw the way you looked at her when Chase made her blush,” she said still smiling.
Kel glared at her, it was as if everyone conspired to piss him off today. “I'll deal with Mia in my own time. Don't you worry yourself about that.” He replied before walking off, leaving her with her thoughts.
Sage stared at Kel as he walked away. “That was weird…”she thought to herself before turning and heading in the opposite direction.
