Chapter 25: Thin Line between Love & Hate
Chase's P.O.V
“Will you calm the fuck down woman!” Chase snarled before swiftly dodging another fire ball.
“Kel and his big fucking mouth…” he grumbled as the witch sent him flying into a wall. Her attacks had little effect on him, which is why he had yet to retaliate towards her violent behavior. It would appear that Kel, the little dip shit, took it upon himself to inform Mia of their plans, who then notified the currently pissed off witch standing less then 10 feet away from him with an energy ball forming in her right hand. What Chase couldn't understand, however, is why his giant prick of a brother couldn't take 2 fucking seconds to warn him that the cat was out of the bag. Imagine his surprise when he popped into the witch's bedroom that afternoon for his daily snack, only to have a fire ball hurled into his face.
“Another world?” she seethed taking a menacing step towards him as the air around her crackled with electricity. “You're sending us to another world and decided it wasn't important enough to tell me!?”
“It never came up,” he replied smoothly, ducking as a wooden chair flew over his head and crashed into the wall.
“I hope you know you're ruining your own shit…”
“Get out,” she said quietly between clenched teeth. “I don't wanna see you right now.”
He paused and stared at her, his lips tugging up into a slow and deliberate smile. “Now, is that any way to treat your boyfriend?”
“You are not my boyfriend!” she yelled despite the light blush the rose to her cheeks, the words sounding false even to her own ears.
Chase grinned amusingly at the fuming witch. Her milky white skin looked radiant as she stood in the light of the afternoon sun that shone in from the open window. The orange-reddish light cast across her face, allowing her pale green eyes to take on a translucent glow. He could hear her frantically racing pulse beating; whether it was a result of her rage or nervousness, he wasn't sure. He could hear the blood pumping through her delicious veins, begging for his attention. God he was hungry. The seconds ticked by as her gaze narrowed on him.
Suddenly, her eyes too slow to follow his unnatural movements, Chase appeared a mere inch from her face. Sage gasped in surprise but made no move to retreat. Chase titled his head slightly as if analyzing a strange creature.
“No, I'm not your boyfriend,” he drawled smoothly. “But you want me to be, don't you?”
He watched as the witch visibly gulped, taking a step back for every step he took forward.
“There's no need to deny it,” he continued. “I know you're attracted to me…” he smiled cockily. “Not that I blame you.”
She scoffed loudly. “Don't flatter yourself. And stop trying to change the subject!”
“What's the subject?” he gazed down at her, his eyes sparkling with amusement at the sight of her lost for words. Sage opened her mouth to speak but stopped when the back of her knees collided with the bed, sending her stumbling down. Chase stood towering over her, his grin widening.
“I-I know what you're doing,” she stuttered nervously.
“What am I doing?” he replied evenly as he crawled towards her, his arms reaching forward to rest on either side of her head, caging her in.
“You're trying to intimidate me…” she replied softly as if afraid to raise her voice.
“Now, why would I do something like that?” he smiled his most charming smile, the one that made women melt.
“Because…” she trailed off, her breath hitching in her throat as his face leaned in closer to hers, their lips a centimeter apart. And just as his lips brushed against hers…
“You're hungry,” she finished before pushing him aside and rolling to her feet. Chase's face found the mattress as he released an aggravated sigh. With his face still facedown on the bed, he turned his head slightly to glare at her. She stood at the foot of the bed with her arms crossed over her chest, a smirk on her pretty face. Although he would never admit it out loud, he was impressed. Lately, the little witch was becoming quite good at calling him on his bullshit.
“She's getting to know me well…” he thought not allowing the meaning behind his observation to bother him.
You're right,” he growled. “I am hungry. So why don't you hocus pocus your pretty little ass over here and feed me.”
She beamed down at him, ignoring the dirty undertone behind his words. “You think I'm pretty?”
Chase rolled his eyes and flipped onto his back before turning his head towards her again.
“If I say yes, will you come here?”
“No.”
“Bitch…” he warned. He could already feel the red and purple veins pulsating around his eyes, no doubt slowly becoming visible to the witch. He hadn't eaten all day, not wanting to weaken her more then necessary. Why he even cared about her health was beyond him, but it was one of the many things concerning the witch he simply chose not to dwell on. His fangs were aching in hunger, pleading to be driven into her creamy flesh and drink until he was satisfied. And though he would never tell her, he was slowly becoming addicted to her reactions as well.
He relished in the way she clung to him when he fed from her. The way she would moan and squirm as her body grinded wantonly against his, slightly begging him to relieve the tension coiling between the apex of her thighs. It still fascinated him that she felt no pain from his feedings; that she screamed in pleasure where others would scream in pain. It took every ounce of self-control he possessed not to throw her down and fuck the living, breathing shit out of her until she couldn't fucking walk anymore. The mere thought of her long, sexy legs wrapped around his waist while he pounded her into the bed over and over again made his cock hard…
“Are you listening to me?!” came an irritated voice as a pillow slammed into his face. “I said I want to know more about your plans.”
“And I want to eat, but we all don't get want we want now do we?” he snapped, clearly irritated.
“If you don't tell me everything right now, I'm not gonna let you feed from me tonight,” she threatened looking all too satisfied with herself.
“Oh really?” he arched a brow before slowly rising from the bed. He gazed at her intensely, searching her face for any sign to indicate that she was bluffing, but found none. The bitch was actually serious.
Chase released a sharp growl. “Fine, I'll just go find food elsewhere.”
“No you won't.”
“Excuse me?” he glared at her. “The audacity on this bitch…”
“If you wanted to feed on others then you would have done it already, but you've acquired a certain taste for my blood and my blood alone,” she paused, allowing a small smirk to play across her lips when his icy blue gaze narrowed into slits. “You don't want anyone's blood but mine, am I wrong?”
Chase felt the sudden urge to snap her neck. Although her words rang true, she made it sound like a weakness and that was something he could not stand for. He rushed at her, his fangs bared and ready to plunge into her flesh. But as he closed in on the last 3 inches, his body hit a brick wall. He stopped dead in his tracks. His now eerie black eyes pierced her taunting green orbs.
An invisible barrier stood between them, blocking his path to her. Sage smiled calmly up at him.
“I've been practicing,” she said with a hint of pride laced behind her words.
Chase growled at her, knowing he still couldn't use his powers against her and, apparently, she knew it as well.
“You can't hide behind that fucking thing forever,” he growled stepping as close as the barrier would allow.
“True,” she agreed calmly. “Let's see which will last longer, my barrier or your hunger. I'm guessing you've been hungry for awhile since you haven't eaten all day.”
“I can wait.” He deadpanned.
“Then it's a good thing my batteries are fully charged, huh?” she smiled.
“We had a deal,” he said his voice low but firm.
“And I have every intention of upholding my end,” she replied evenly. “Just tell me about your plan.”
“You know,” Chase drawled as he slowly began circling her, like a predator circling its prey. “If you had just asked me after I fed, I would have told you everything. It's not like it's a secret or anything. But no, you wanted to play Sabrina the teenage witch instead, which is fine by me. Just know that your weak attempt at female empowerment has only served to piss me off. Now there's no telling what I'll do to you once that barrier drops. It can be a surprise for both of us.”
Sage's P.O.V
The suggestive tone in his voice sent a chill down her spine. She suddenly regretted her impulsive action. She was just teasing him at first, teaching him a lesson for being so cocky. The last thing she wanted to do was anger him, but his hunger left him on edge. She knew from experience how cranky he and Kel got when they didn't fed, it was like watching a rabid dog snap after days of starvation. But when she saw an opportunity to find out more about their plans, she jumped on it without fully thinking it through. Mia had told her the gist of what Kel revealed to her, but she wanted to know the details. She couldn't hold up this barrier forever. She would eventually run out of energy, in which case she would be screwed.
She watched nervously as Chase continued to circle her, his eyes pitch black. She wasn't sure if it was from hunger or anger, maybe both. How was she supposed to talk her way out of this one?
“Why does your mind automatically turn to violence when you don't get your way?” she asked trying to appear as calm as possible.
“I'm a brat,” he admitted without hesitation, his black gaze never leaving hers. Sage could feel dark energy radiating from his core. It flowed through the room; almost choking her since the air suddenly became thick. She watched with fascination as dark gray clouds rolled through the sky blocking the sun, allowing darkness to spill into the room. Thunder clapped in the background as lightening flashed through the room. The blue flash skimmed across Chase's face, his black eyes, sharp canines and probing veins presenting him as the terrifying creature that he was. Chase's unlimited amount of power never ceased to amaze her. To think, he was causing all of this from the sheer strength of his anger alone. The concept should worry her, considering she was the one his anger was currently directed at, but she found she wasn't as frightened as she should have been.
“You're being a little dramatic, don't you think?” she said arching a delicate brow. For a moment, his silence worried her. One look at Chase and Sage knew she wouldn't get any answers out of him tonight.
“I went about this all wrong,” she sighed debating on what to do next.
“Fine, I give,” she surrendered, but didn't drop the barrier yet. “But just answer one question.” He remained silent, but she continued nevertheless.
“What are you gonna do, after your mission is complete?”
“Return to my own world,” he answered dryly to her surprise.
Sage was taken aback by his answer. It seemed like the most obvious reply, but she still didn't expect to hear it, or rather was hoping he wouldn't say it. No, she didn't want him to say it because saying it made it real. His answer confirmed her hidden fear, that after his job was done, she would never see him again. The thought of never seeing his stupid, smug, handsome, smirking face again made her chest constrict painfully. Silence fell between them as she stared aimlessly at the floor by his feet. What the hell did she care if he left? It's not like she was in love with him or anything…
Hell, she barely knew the guy and what little she did know wasn't winning him any brownie points. He could leave tomorrow and she wouldn't care! Sage clenched her fist at her sides, too lost in her thoughts to notice the barrier slowly falling dissipating around her.
“All he does is use me anyways. Good riddance! Let him go, I don't need him. Every since he blew into town my life has just become more complicated. With him gone, everything will go back to normal, new world or not. I don't care…”
But she did care. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't will herself to believe her own words. Over the past few weeks, she had become so attached to the jerk that it was becoming increasingly more difficult to picture her life without him. And god did she try. He was bad for her on all levels. He was manipulating, violent, arrogant, selfish, pigheaded, infuriating and pretty much an all out jackass, but…
She squeezed her eyes shut when she felt the sting of tears threatening to fall. She refused to cry for him, especially with him standing a few inches…Oh Shit!
Sage's head snapped up, finally breaking herself out of her thoughts long enough to notice she was no longer behind the confines of her barrier. Chase now stood directly in front of her, close enough for her to feel his cool breath fan across her face. She gulped nervously, knowing putting up a new barrier would be pointless since he would be able to sense it and stop her from completing the spell in time. Her eyes were leveled with his chest, not yet finding the courage to gaze up into his cold black eyes. She was a little fearful of what he would do to her, having faced his wrath countless times already. Finally finding the courage, she lifted her eyes to meet his.
She was shocked to see his black orbs return to their icy blue color as he gazed down at her. She glanced over his shoulder and noticed the sky was no longer filled with dark clouds and sounds of lightening, but the clear quiet night sky since the sun had long since disappeared beyond the horizon. All was normal again. She then, hesitantly, turned her attention back to Chase. Her eyes locked with his as he stared down at her, his eyes intense and almost hypnotic, as if gazing into her soul. She found herself shifting uncomfortably under his piercing gaze, but made no attempt to step away. They stared at each other for what felt like hours. Slowly, a lazy grin stretched across his handsome face, his icy blue eyes sparkling with mischief.
“You gonna miss me?”
She rolled her eyes. “I'd be crazy to miss you. When you're not feeding from me you're threatening me. Not much to miss.”
He moved in closer to her, her back hitting the wall. Sage held her breath as he leaned in, as if to kiss her, only to tilt his head before reaching her lips. His cool lips brushed against her right ear, the sensation sending a visible shiver rippling down her spine.
“Liar,” he whispered in a husky voice.
And there it was again, the feeling in the pit of her stomach. It was like fireworks going off in all directions. She couldn't deny it anymore…she was falling for him, hard. But she was scared, not of him, but of the way he made her feel…the power he had over her. Her conversation with Mia in the school washroom flooding back to her.
“I don't want it to be a lie…” she whispered back, her head falling against his shoulder.
“But it is,” he finished for her, his lips trailing along the contour of her jaw.
“What do you want from me?” she asked bringing her eyes up to meet his.
Chase's P.O.V
It was a good question. What did he want from her? It was on the tip of his tongue to throw out a snarky reply and say blood, but he knew that wasn't what she meant. Chase wasn't as dense as most people believed him to be. He knew that his feelings for the witch were somehow connected to his malfunctioning abilities, especially considering they only malfunctioned with her and no one else. He just didn't know why. That was the million dollar question, wasn't it? Why was all this happening now and why her? He knew it was time he and Kel sat down and actually try figuring this mess out, but they've been putting it off. And although they wouldn't say it in so many words, it was because they were scared of what they might find.
“How bad could it be?”
Kel told him about his new found mind communication with Mia and he hadn't bothered to try it with Sage just yet. The last thing he needed right now was the witch in his head with all her human emotions clouding his judgment. Chase glanced down at her, still waiting for his reply.
“I'll tell you when I know,” he replied not able to tell her what he himself didn't know. Sage remained silent.
The atmosphere turned somber as the two gazed longingly at each other, unspoken words passing between them. Chase was suddenly overwhelmed with the urge to take her roughly against the wall. What was it about this girl that drove him crazy? Her beauty was undeniable, but it was more then that. It was then Tage's words came back to him…soulmates.
As far as he knew, his kind didn't mate, but…
“Stranger things have happened,” he thought lifting his hand to caress her cheek. He marveled at the way she reacted to his every touch, watching as she leaned into the warmth of his hand. She didn't know she was doing it, the action was subconscious.
“How should I punish you,” he said abruptly changing the subject.
“You can't,” she stated calmly, her tone indicating she was serious.
“Says who?” he scoffed. Surely the witch didn't think she had the power to stop him?
“You,” she shot back cheekily. “Remember, before going to that party you promised to be nice to me for the entire week in exchange for being your…bitch.”
Chase grinned. “I did say that, didn't I? But since our cover is blown, there's no need to play house anymore, unless you want to of course.”
“And if I don't?” she challenged despite the amused glint in her eyes.
“Then our be nice clause no longer applies and I get to punish you for that little barrier stunt you pulled back there,” he replied slipping his arms around her waist and pulling her body flush against his.
“Punish me how?” she smiled impishly, her own hand slipping into his leather jacket to glide over his chiseled abs before slowly making its way up to his solid chest.
“Hmm,” he drawled trailing hot kissing down her neck as his hand travelled down to her ass, his fingers digging into the flesh as he gave it a firm squeeze. “I think a good spanking should suffice.”
He pressed her against the wall, pushing his leg between hers to get as close as possible. His pelvis grinded against hers upon contact, forcing a small gasp from her lips. He smiled into her neck. It amazed him how quickly the mood tended to change between them, from lustful to angry to serious and back to lustful. One minute he wants to kill her and the next he wants to fuck her into next week.
“You drive me fucking crazy, you know that?” he growled heatedly into her ear.
“Like wise,” she replied before turning his face and crushing her lips to his. He responded immediately, not wasting any time. His mouth devoured hers as their tongues battled for dominance. She moaned into his mouth when he gripped the back of her thighs and hiked her up onto his waist, her legs instinctively wrapping around him like a vice. Without breaking their kiss, Chase walked them over to the nearest piece of furniture in the room…her writing desk.
“Bed is too fucking far…”
The papers and books flew onto the floor without him touching it as he laid her down onto the hard surface. She tangled her hands in his spiky white hair, pulling him down on top of her as her legs gripped him tighter. Chase forgot about his hunger as he deepened the kiss, neither wanting it to end.
“I thought you were gonna spank me?” she whispered huskily against his lips without fully breaking contact.
Chase growled, the vibration sending ripples through her body until it reached the aching spot between her legs.
“Keep talking and I'll fuck you right here,” he warned before attacking her neck, his fangs plunging into her soft skin. Sage threw her head back, moments away from screaming in ecstasy, but Chase clamped a hand down onto her mouth, stifling her scream. He knew there were others in the house and didn't want to alert them of his presence. He drank deep from her, quenching his thirst. He could feel her body writhing in pleasure under his when the most incredible sensation washed over him. He felt something opening up between them, allowing him to feel everything she was experiencing. Her pleasure, coupled with his own, overwhelmed him to the point of sheer bliss. Never in his life had he felt something so extraordinary. Kel told him that he was now open to Mia's emotions, which is what he assumed was happening to him right now.
He retracted his fangs from her neck after drinking his fill. Her pale green eyes held the dazed look they always held after he fed from her. He found himself completely enthralled by her.
“Fuck it, I'm taking her.” he decided before swiftly scooping her up and throwing her onto the bed. She squeaked in surprise, closing and reopening her eyes to find him on top of her again in a matter of seconds. His lips soon found their way back to hers as their make-out session continued. He clawed at her clothes as she hastily tugged off his leather jacket. He couldn't help but be a little surprised by her eagerness, but chose not to comment and risk ruining the moment. He ripped open her jeans and was about to push them down the length of her legs when footsteps sounded from down the hall. Chase stopped the kiss although their mouths were still connected.
He groaned in annoyance.
“What's wrong?” she panted against his lips. Her human ears weren't keen enough to pick up on the sounds of footsteps moving towards her door. Someone was coming.
“Un-fucking-believable…” he grumbled as he began to rise off of her, but went tumbling back down when her legs locked around him. He glanced down at her as she glared warningly up at him. He was about to ask what the hell her problem was when he remembered the incident in the back seat of his car after the dance. She thought he was leaving her hanging again.
He chuckled before leaning down to peck her on the lips.
“Your mother is coming,” those four little words made her eyes bulge. Without warning, she quickly pushed him aside and righted her clothes.
“Get of out here,” she hissed at him before gathering the scattered books and papers off the floor and throwing them back onto the desk.
“Why? I think it's time I met your mother, don't you?” he grinned cockily, lounging on the bed in a careless manner with his hands resting behind his head. She threw his leather jacket at him.
“Don't make me light your ass on fire, go.”
Chase pouted and mocked a hurt expression.
“Sage?” came her mother's voice from behind the door. “Is everything okay in there?”
Sage's P.O.V
“Everything's fine!” she replied, tossing a glare over at Chase who had yet to leave. She watched as her doorknob turned.
“Mom, I'm kind of in the middle of—” she rushed to say but it was too late. The door swung open and her mother poked her head into the room.
“What's all that noise you're making?” her mother questioned, her eyes darting around the room.
Sage threw another glance over at the bed, but found it empty. She released sigh of relief. Thank god.
“I was just practicing some spells,” she lied easily enough.
“I could have sworn I heard voices?” her mother said frowning slightly.
“Nope, just me and my spells,” she insisted with a bright smile, praying her mother buys it.
“Okay…” she finally said before throwing one last look around the room. Sage thought she was in the clear when her mother turned to leave until…
“Whose jacket is that?”
Pause.
“What?” she said before following her mother's line of sight. There, on the floor beside the bed, laid Chase's leather jacket.
“Oh, that…just a jacket I borrowed from a friend and forgot to give it back.”
“I'm gonna fucking kill him…” she seethed.
“Looks like a boy's jacket,” her mother observed suspiciously.
“It's a co-ed school, mom,” Sage rolled her eyes. “Some of my friends happen to have penises.”
“Don't get cheeky with me young lady,” her mother replied with a cocked eyebrow. “And would this be the same friend your grandmother saw you with a few weeks ago?”
Sage fidgeted nervously, not liking where this was going.
“Maybe…”
“So you have male friends walking you home and lending you jackets, is that it? I wasn't born yesterday, child,” her mother said rolling her eyes. “Who is this boy?”
“It's just a boy, mom. No big deal,” Sage insisted trying in vein to put a stop to her mother's line of questioning.
“Well, it apparently is a big deal because your grandmother said you've been distracted during your training and falling asleep, care to explain?”
“That's nothing…” except a little blood loss. She finished in her head.
“Well I think you're clearly spending too much time with this boy—”
“Mom…” she whined.
“Let me finish,” her mother said sternly. “And any boy who takes away from your training is clearly someone we should meet, considering how seriously you usually take your craft.”
“You're making a big deal out of nothing,” Sage insisted, her irritation rising. Being born into a family of witches really gave her the short end of the stick. Her entire family was strict when it came to her learning her witchcraft; they rarely gave a damn about anything else unless it involved distractions that tampered with her craft, such as the opposite sex. In the past, whenever she got a boyfriend, they would make her bring him home for interrogation. This would usually end with the boy breaking up with her because her family was nuts.
A witch must always stay focused on her magic, surroundings and those within it.
That's usually the lecture she got if they sensed her getting distracted. Anything fun related was a no-no, which is why she often lied to get her way.
“So,” her mother continued. “Tell your friend to come over to Sunday night dinner.”
“Sunday night dinner?!” she yelled outraged. “But that's with the entire family!”
“I am well aware what Sunday night dinner entails Sage,” her mother said in that “lower your voice” tone. “We expect to meet him soon.” She finished, leaving little room for discussion before exiting the room.
Sage mumbled a string of profanities under her breath. She turned around, coming face to face with a smug looking Chase.
“Dinner, huh. Sounds fun,” he smirked down at her.
She glared at him. “Oh yeah, I can't fucking wait.”
His grin widened as he stepped closer to her. “Don't worry, I'll behave.”
“Promise?”
“I'll be in a room full of witches, I aint promising shit,” he scoffed, grin still in place.
“Chase!” she pouted cutely.
He chuckled, leaning down for a kiss. She pulled away before his lips could touch hers.
“What are we?” she asked softly.
“Come again?” he replied cocking his head to the side.
“What do I tell my family?” she clarified. “Are we friends or…more.”
“What do you want us to be?” he flashed a sly grin reaching to grasp her around the waist.
“Can you be serious for once!” she slapped his hands away. “I don't like playing these mind games, Chase. Be honest with me for five frigging minutes.”
The smile dropped from his face as he studied her facial expressions.
“What the hell am I suppose to tell her?” He thought.
There wasn't a label to describe their relationship, at least not yet anyways. He knew he felt something for her, something strong and possessive, he just didn't know how to voice it. He never did well with relationships, not since…
He quickly shook the thought from his head.
One-night stands and quick fucks, that was his thing. But right now, standing here gazing into her beautiful pale green orbs, he knew he didn't want anyone else. And he'd be damned if he let anyone else have her. The mere thought of her with some other bastard ripped a vicious growl from his throat, the urge to cause severe bodily harm to anyone who dare touch what was his already building within him.
He closed the space between them, enclosing her in his arms. He wouldn't drop his guard. No, that would be foolish. But maybe it wouldn't hurt to see where this goes…
“I'll be…whatever you want me to be, baby,” he flashed his signature grin before placing a soft, yet intimate, kiss on her cheek.
Sage blushed at his causal show of affection, a smile tugging at her lips.
“Not what I wanted to hear, but I'll take it,” she smiled, her dark lashes fluttering as she looked up at him. “I guess you're coming to dinner. Please use the door.”
“If I must,” he said with a dramatic sigh, rolling his eyes before throwing her another smirk. He titled her chin up with his index finger, kissing her slowly before turning to leave.
“You're really getting use to that, aren't you?” she teased as he neared the window.
“What's that?” he said over his shoulder.
“Kissing me whenever you want.”
His smile grew. “Want me to stop?”
Her smile mirrored his. “No. Not that you would even if I asked.”
“Glad you fucking know.” And with that he vanished from the room. Sage couldn't keep the smile off her face.
She then noticed his black leather jacket lying on her bed. “He forgot his jacket again…”
“Keep it, looks better on you anyways,” came his voice in her head. Sage jumped, slightly started. She grinned down at the jacket in her hands. She was never gonna get use to his Jedi mind tricks. It then occurred to her that Chase and Kel still didn't know why their powers kept going haywire around her and Mia.
“Maybe my spell book has something that would help…” She thought walking over to the leather bind book. She dropped the hefty book down onto her bed before flipping back the pages and skimming through it. Even as she read through various spells, her mind kept wandering back to Chase.
“Damn, I am distracted,” she thought reaching for his jacket, her fingers running over the smooth fabric.
“I miss the stupid jackass already…” she mumbled into the jacket, clutching it to her chest. Though, she was still a little worried about Sunday…
Chase wasn't exactly known for his patience after all and her family could be extremely intuitive at times. She still didn't know how she was gonna break the whole “we're gonna go live in another world because this one is doomed” speech to them.
She sighed.
None of this would go over well. She could already feel her anxiety levels rising.
“One thing at a time…” she sighed before turning her attention back to her spell book.
