~Chapter 1- Running~

Parts of the forest lit up as men ran around trying to find the child, they ran around shouting for her now, she had to be found, they had to catch her.

Meanwhile a young girl was curled inside a small hole in a tree trunk hiding. She breathed heavily, exhausted from running so long...it wasn’t a long way from her village but she was only 11 years old and had just basically witnessed her mother being murdered.
she cried as she remembered what had happened and thought to herself...was it my fault that she was killed...she felt responsible for it but wasn’t sure why. She fell asleep that night with constant nightmares and waking up at the slightest noise.

The young girl awoke the next morning with only the sounds of the birds and other woodland animals...she crawled out of the tree and looked around...she then walked to a small stream and after splashing water onto her face to wake her up, looked at her reflection...Her name is Koinuyami, she is 11 but small for her age...she wore a dark green kimono which had rips on it from when she ran away. She also wore a thin silver necklace with a small heart shaped garnet jewel on it around her neck. Her hair was dark brown and fell down to her hips, it was also covered with leaves and small twigs. Her eyes were very dark brown almost black with a little bit of silver around the pupil...but the most peculiar part of her is that if u moved her messy hair a bit, u would notice that she did not have ears on the side of her head. In fact they were on top, like dogs ears were; pointed and a lighter shade of brown then her hair. What was stranger yet was near the bottom of her back was a small light brown tail just about 8 inches long.

She stared at her reflection and after thinking about how no one else in her village, not even her mother had ears like hers and a tail she began to realize why the men must have killed her mother. “They killed her because of what I am. Though I’m not totally sure what that is”. Koinu was confused she had never seen anyone in her life that had a tail or ears like she had.

She was an only child and had never met her father. She resembled only some of her mothers features. The ears and tail must have come from her father though she had never seen him. She remembered her mother telling her that she had a different kind of father but did not say how he was different. The villagers always talked about scary demons around the area and the village had been attacked once or twice by them when she was there. Her mother seemed scared to mention him around the other people in the village but she just thought that her dad had done something wrong so she didn’t ask anything about it. All she knew about her dad was that he gave her mom a strange sword to give to her once she was old enough and that he was one of the kindest men her mother had ever met.

Koinu was very scared and alone but knew she could not go back to the village where she grew up. She did not know where to go, she could go look for her father… but she didn’t know where he was or if he was even alive. She also wanted to learn more about who she was, and why she was so different from the people in her village. So she decided to go look for a new home and hopefully her father to get some answers. Koinu grabbed her small bag of items she had taken with her from her home and her sword and started off through the woods searching for a place to belong.

Koinu wandered for days and nights only stopping for rest when she absolutely had to, even though she was very hungry she didn’t stop. Once in a while she would eat some berries if she found any but it still didn’t help. She knew that the villagers would still be searching for her and hoped they would not be able to follow her trail because she knew they would kill her.

One morning while eating some berries for lunch, Koinu examined at her surroundings; she was in a dense forest covered in many types of trees and bushes. As she continued to walk her ears twitched as she heard a sound. It was like an animal growling. “I wonder where that noise is coming from.” She looked around but saw nothing. She was afraid that there could be wild animals in the woods and that she could get eaten. She felt frightened but kept going hoping that whatever was making that sound would not go near her, or notice that she was there.

Suddenly something dropped on her head. “Ouch!” She held her hand on top of her head and rubbed the sore spot. She looked up at the tree branches above her but saw nothing. She continued to walk and again something dropped on her head. It was a small acorn…she looked up and noticed the leaves in the tree move. But what is it…she heard the growling again and looked at the bushes in front of her and stared into two bright green eyes. She quickly took out her too large of a sword and held it out having a hard time holding it straight because it was too heavy for her. A noise came from the bush and a child about her age walked out of it, looking at her strangely.

The girl had a small red hat on and a blue kimono tied with a white obi. She had blond/orange hair that was in low pigtails. Seeing her Koinu put her sword away. The girl smiled at Koinu and then spoke... “hi I'm Mizu and this is my sister Tora”...another girl jumped down from the tree above them and smiled at Koinu…she was wearing a blue hat and a purple kimono with a pink obi. Like Mizu she also wore her hair in pigtails but her hair was orange/red with black streaks…

Koinu looked at them and smiled back…Tora pointed at Koinu and giggled…”hey Ur a hanyou! That’s so awesome.” She then looked at Mizu and they both smiled as they looked at her tail and ears…”what’s Ur name?” Tora asked Koinu. “I'm koinuyami” she said in a quiet voice…Tora then hugged Koinu tightly instead of shaking her hand. “We’re very glad to meet u we have never met any hanyou’s before…actually I just thought that they were legend, I didn’t know they even existed. So what kind r u?” Koinu moved her head slightly sideways, she looked like a confused puppy. She had no idea what they were talking about…what’s a hanyou anyways? She thought to herself...

Mizu looked at Tora when Koinu didn’t answer. “Okay then...well u look hungry... I'm sure mom won’t mind if u came over for lunch. We are on our way back from exploring anyways”. Tora nodded in agreement “ya it would be fun to have someone over for lunch. We could go on a picnic!” Koinu felt her stomach as it rumbled. “Well I guess I could if it’s wok with Ur mom”. Koinu followed the two girls through the forest until they got to a small clearing with a small lake and a house near it…Mizu and Tora smiled. “Here it is our wonderful home”. Tora smiled and pointed as she explained. They both ran towards the house dragging Koinu by the arms behind them.
