Chapter one:
Bellusager - Aiko
“Aiko! Hurry up and get here! Now!!” Screamed queen Leda.
I picked up the pace and ran to my queen, for someone who's supposed to be the elegant ruler of the `beautiful land', queen Leda was anything but elegant. As a member of the royal council I got to see queen Leda for who she really is; when talking to her people she would seem as elegant, well-mannered and beautiful as she possibly could, but behind the palace walls she would dress in the most inappropriate of clothing, burp after every bite and fall asleep during her tuitions. But even if she disregarded her manners, she was still a kind and gracious ruler. Just last week had she gone for a walk among the people, she had ordered her guards to give the underprivileged peasants some fruit and bread and had even brought home a stray dog. And if not for queen Leda, I would still be in the streets waiting for death to cross over me.
I had finally reached the dining room in which queen Leda was sitting at the end of the 7 meter long table.
“Yes, your highness?” I said as I lowered my head to slightly bow to her.
She gave me a strange `what-are-you-doing' look.
“Aiko, how many times have I told you that you can call me Leda, you don't have to get so formal with me, we've known each other for 7 years.” She said picking up a piece of fruit with her hands and popping it into her mouth.
I raised my head and straightened my back, “Yes I know, but I still feel obligated to call you by your royal status.”
“What does `obligated' mean?” came the cute angelic voice of Shari, the adopted `princess' of the royal family. Shari was by far the most adorable being on earth, she had big brown eyes and long soft chestnut brown hair, her voice was as cute as an angel's and her smile warmed the hearts of many… yet she was a little dense.
“Um… Obligated means….” I started off thinking for awhile.
“It means she feels like she `has to' do something.”
I turned around to face the source of the voice, Alisa, the wise and honest scholar appointed to queen Leda. Alisa was born into a noble family, and since she could walk and talk she had been specially schooled to serve the queen and princess.
“Alisa.” I said softly. I have always admired her, her long raven hair and fair skin made her seem so sophisticated.
“Wow Alisa is so smart!” Shari exclaimed with one of her heart warming smiles. Alisa smiled back.
“Yes well, anyway Aiko.” I quickly turned back to the queen. “I need you to send something to Fidelisterra for me.” I nodded.
As the messenger it was my duty to go outside the Kingdom walls to other Kingdoms and discuss political matters.
Leda handed me a scroll. “Take this to Fidelisterra by the noon of the day after tomorrow.”
It was now noon and it would take me one whole day to reach Fidelisterra. So it would be best for me to leave tomorrow morning.
I nodded to queen Leda. “Is there anything else?” I asked.
“Nope.” She said before letting out an audible burp.
“Leda, please don't do that, you're mother would be ashamed if she was here.” stated Alisa.
“Whatever! Mother isn't here now is she?” queen Leda poked at another piece of fruit with her fork and popped it into her mouth.
“Sigh.” Alisa let out.
I felt kind of sorry for her.
It was nearly dawn, I was outside in the stables grooming my horse Garnet. I had on a beige sleeve-less leather coat that went down to my knees, black leather pants with black combat boots, bandages covering the scars all along my right arm and a white bandana covered my black hair. Since my hair was rather short, this outfit made me appear like a man, Alisa had advised me to dress this way so that I would be less likely attacked while traveling to and from kingdoms. It was obvious that women were more vulnerable and more likely to be robbed than men. Thus the wise and honest Alisa told me to dress this way to avoid adversity… and she had said that I look more attractive as a man than a woman. I was kind of hurt.
“Aiko.”
I turned around to face Alisa.
“Alisa, what are you doing here so early?” I asked with a surprised look on my face.
“Just in case.” Alisa reached out her hand and presented me with a small pocket sized bag.
I gratefully took it and opened it up, inside was a few small smoke bombs.
“Just in case.” I repeated with a smile. Alisa smiled back.
Even if it was less likely for me to get attack while dressed as a man, it didn't mean that there still wasn't a small chance. Alisa would sometimes hand me smoke bombs or light grenades so that I could escape if ever being attacked. In my 5 years of being a messenger, I have only been attacked twice, that's why I bandage my right arm to cover the scars of those days.
“Make sure you come back by two days after today.” She said half turning her body to walk back into the palace.
“Ok.” I said softly.
Alisa gave a soft caring smile before completing her turn and returning to the palace.
I too turned around to face Garnet, I tied the pocket sized bagged Alisa had given me around the belt buckle on my pants, and I then jumped and lifted myself onto Garnet.
“Ready to go, girl?” I asked Garnet… Yes I talk to my horse, what's it to you?
Garnet nodded her head, and with that we headed off.
As we approached the entrance to the Kingdom I presented the guards with my royal symbol that was tattooed on my right hand, I usually covered it with the bandages.
The guards examined it and after verifying it opened the gates and let me pass.
“I'll be back the day after tomorrow.” I told one of the guards. He nodded.
Even the guards of Bellusager were handsome and beautiful, even if some of them had scars on their faces, it only made them appear more vigorous and valiant.
For an average looking girl like me, I could never truly belong in such a divine place.
