My mom came running into my room screaming excitedly,
“Get up! Get up! Honey, you have to help me get ready for my party tonight!” I have the one of the only mothers who still has parties regularly. I definitely have one of the only mothers who gets wasted with her best friends from high school, at her own parties, run by her daughter, regularly.
“Mom, it's 8:00 in the middle of the summer. Your party isn't for over 10 hours. Did you have to get me up now?” I croaked in that barely-usable morning voice I have.
“Oh but there's so much to do! Honey, I understand if you want to go back to sleep, but this is so important to me and I could really use your help.” She whined back. I swear my mother is the only mother I know of that uses puppy eyes on her own 14-year-old daughter. But, then again, I'm probably the only 14-year-old daughter that would let her.
“Ugh, mom! Fine. Just let me shower and get ready. I'll be an hour tops.”
“Okay, thanks so much honey,” she smiled, “this means so much to me! Take your time!”
“Can I get that in writing?” I said under my breath. She didn't hear me, surprise. I sighed and dragged myself out of bed. I hit the button on the radio and it started blasting some annoying pop song. I turned it off and went to find my iPod. Lucky me, it was out of charge because I left it running all night, again. I sighed as I turned on my laptop and opened iTunes. I just hit `Shuffle Songs' which worked well enough since I didn't really know what to listen to, but I was happy with all the music I had. I started collecting my clothes to take into the bathroom when I saw a new window pop up on my screen. I went over to check it out and I realized it was this dork from my church, Luke. He'd liked me for ever and I liked him back when we were little, but now he's just plain annoying. To give you an example, he was up at 8:00 in the middle of summer, are you sensing something wrong? This day was not starting well.
I turned up the music and started reading.
Duke_Luke_69: tttyyylllleeeerrrr!!
Duke_Luke_69: im SO glad that u r on!
Duke_Luke_69: i really wanna no wut u said to the email!!!!
Duke_Luke_69: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Duke_Luke_69: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Duke_Luke_69: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Duke_Luke_69: but I gess ur not ther so ill just go read ur reply =D
Unfortunately for Luke, I hadn't replied to the e-mail. It was just him asking me out, again. He knew I didn't like him, meaning he just wanted to go out with me because he thought I was pretty and he wanted to brag. Or, I guess it could be because he liked me, but who wants to go out with someone if they don't like you? I suppose Luke is a possible answer, jeez. Sometimes guys just get the strangest ideas. I remember the first time he talked to me about it. At the time he was just about to leave for his aunts for the summer, meaning I wouldn't see him for two months anyway.
“Tyler! Come on, please? If we start dating now we'll have two months over with by the time I get back!”
“You make it sound like it's a bad thing…”
“No! It'd be a great thing!”
“Ok, Luke. You know I don't like you like that. And even if I did, I don't think I want a boyfriend that I can't see daily, or at least more than every few months.”
“But Tyler! If we go out, then we could brag until I'm back!”
“I don't brag…”
“Well, then I could! Please?”
“Luke, I really think this is a bad idea…”
“Oh okay. Well, my friend made me do it anyway.”
“Do what, ask me out?”
“Yeah! I don't think it's a good idea either. He just made me…”
“Alrighty, Luke.”
You can see what I mean. At the end of this summer I was going to his school because we had moved into a bigger house since school got out. (My mom's party was celebrating that we finished unpacking.)
Problem is, he was so excited about me coming, and he told the whole school that I was his girlfriend, apparently along with `everything about me'. I was less than thrilled, considering he isn't the most popular guy, and I already had friends that I wanted to hang out with. I didn't really think he was in that group. Actually, I was positive he wasn't. I guess I'd just have to deal with that whenever September got around to coming. I decided to save him the agony of an empty inbox, and IMd him before he got his Internet open.
pepperspray33: hey.
pepperspray33: uhhm…
pepperspray33: what email?
Duke_Luke_69: oh ok, gud. i wuz scared that u just didnt message bak.
pepperspray33: message back to what?
Duke_Luke_69: wait ill send it again
pepperspray33: noooo just tell me what it says. please. i gotta go soon, so hurry up.
I wasn't very interested in reading the e-mail again, considering he'd be right there this time and I couldn't use my ingenious, `didn't get it' excuse. Luckily for me, he bailed.
Duke_Luke_69: aww well i gess i don wanna send it 2 u till u got time 2 think bout it k?
pepperspray33: okay luke, whatever you say. i gotta go now though. ill ttyl
Duke_Luke_69: :'( byee!!!
pepperspray33: peace. Bye.
I set my messenger to away, grabbed some clothes, and made my way to the bathroom. I dropped my clothes off and started the shower so it would get hot. I remembered my iPod and went back to plug it in. I happened to glance at my computer, and I had a new message. I opened it to see that it was my best friend, Justin. Everyone's always making fun of us just because he's a guy and I'm a girl, but that's just how it's always been. I've known him since we were 2 or 3 and we've just been friends ever since.
Rock_on_443: hey ty, I know ur not there but I was just leavin u a message. We should hang later, I've got nothing on today. Call my cell if you get this after I sign off. Peace.
Pepperspray33: hey! I gotta go soon but im here. Sup?
Rock_on_443: nothin here really. my mom's having a cleaning spree again, and I think the cleaning fumes are getting to me.
Pepperspray33: haha, would that explain why you're up so early?
Rock_on_443: nice. But no, you know my dogs never shut up.
Pepperspray33: right, well you should come hang here. My mom's having a party so I gotta help her with that, but you can help too and after I'm gonna need someone to cool me down. You know how me and my mom get on party days.
Rock_on_443: ooo. Yeah. I'll be there whenever I can. But I gotta help my mom this morning…
Rock_on_443: can I crash there for lunch?
Pepperspray33: yahh no problem. You can stay the night too, its not like my parents would notice.
Rock_on_443: lol yeah, alright. I'll have Noah drop me off whenever he can get his hands off his girlfriend long enough to drive.
Pepperspray33: haha, okay. See you at lunch.
Rock_on_443: Later ty. Try and not freak until I get there, k?
Pepperspray33: haha, ill work on that. Peace.
Rock_on_443: bye
Pepperspray33: bye

I remembered the water running in the bathroom and ran to go catch it before all the hot water was gone. I spent over 30 minutes in the shower, taking my sweet time before I went to get bossed by my mother. When I was done, I brushed out my hair then swept it back into a messy bun so it would dry how I wanted it, straight at the top and my unruly curls not starting until closer to the bottom. After I was all dry and dressed, I took extra time doing my makeup and putting on earrings, perfume, etc. When I finally emerged, my mother was knocking on my bedroom door. Surprise, surprise, it'd been exactly an hour.
“I'm over here, Mom.” I said. She jumped and scurried down the hall to meet me.
“Oh good, honey, I was worried that you weren't up yet! Anyway, since you are, why don't you start with cleaning the bathroom? Is that okay? Oh yes, of course it is!” I took a deep breath. “So, you know how I need it! Thanks again, sugar!” she air kissed me and essentially skipped back down the hall.
“Justin's coming over at lunch. He's spending the night!” I called. She waved her hand and smiled.
“Great, honey. He can help us…” she got a far off look in her eyes and sighed happily before hopping down the stairs. I laughed quietly to myself at my mother, who had many similar attributes to, say, a five-year-old. I decided to start on the bathroom so that hopefully, Justin wouldn't have to do too much. At least I now had full permission for him to stay over. That's one cool thing about my mom, either she knows me and Justin won't do anything or she wouldn't care if we did. I'm hoping it's the first, but sometimes I'm not so sure.
She did the whole teen-mother thing with me, she's only 29. Considering I'm almost 14, that means she would probably be disturbed if she knew I'd barely gotten to second base. Lucky for her, my dad stuck around. I don't know if she even realizes that he's just about the only guy that would be okay with being a father at 16. Well, I guess Justin would, but I'm not planning on following in my mother's footsteps anyway.
By the time I had finished the bathroom, which wasn't hard considering our house is pretty clean most of the time (with the exception of my room) I headed downstairs to get a water or something. I ended up eating a bowl of raspberries, I swear I would die without those things. But, it just so happened that my mother walked in a few seconds after I popped the first one into my mouth.
“Oh, honey! You can't eat those!” she gasped.
“Uhhm, why?”
“Because! Oh honey, you'll get them all over your white shirt!” she seemed to think this was a good reason for me not to eat… so I refrained from laughing.
“Mom, if I spill, which I won't, then I can just change my shirt. No big deal”
“But raspberries stain so badly!”
“I can get it out. It's okay, Mom.” I could tell that she wanted to continue arguing, but I was better at laundry than her and she knew it, so she just let it rest. Her worried expression instantly melted into a smile.
“Did you finish the bathroom?”
“Yes, Mom.”
“When is Justin coming again?” I checked the clock on the wall.
“I don't know, couple minutes?” She snapped into action.
“Oh, no! Honey you've got to have your room clean before he gets here! You're never going to keep a boyfriend if he sees that your room's not clean!” Okay, so maybe she didn't care if me and Justin hooked up.
“Mom, he's just Justin.”
“That's what you think now!” she laughed. I heard the doorbell.
“Uhmm, right. Well that's him now.” I went to get the door, and checked behind to make sure my mom wasn't following me. I greeted Justin in the usual way, just a light hug. But when I let go I saw my mother's face peeking around the kitchen wall, bearing a huge smirk like a little kid who'd just figured out some huge secret. She scurried up the stairs before I could say anything in my own defense.
“What's up with her?” Justin asked with a smile as he stole one of my raspberries. I threw another one at him and he caught it in his mouth.
“Oh, she just thinks you're my boyfriend.” He burst out laughing. I pretended to be offended, and we just started to laugh again.
As we went up to my room he asked what my mom had planned for today.
“I'm not sure,” I said with a smile, “I already cleaned the bathroom so I'm not sure if I have to do anything else for awhile.”
“Haha, that's good.” He laughed and flopped on my bed as I sat in my desk chair. I started some music from my computer and suddenly remembered Luke.
“Oh, guess what happened this morning?”
“What…?” he asked.
“Luke asked me out.” I said with sarcastic enthusiasm.
“Again?” we both burst out laughing.
“Yup.” I said as I flopped down next to him on my bed. We were quiet for about two seconds, before he goosed my side and I squealed. I pinched the back of his neck and we both laughed. We continued our pinching fight for a few minutes until my mom decided to come in, without knocking. Justin saw her before me and instantly sobered up. I thought he was faking so I pinched his arm again. After a few seconds I followed his glance to my doorway, where my mother was standing with the most confident smile I had ever seen.
“I hope I'm not…interrupting?” she said with an added smirk.
“No, you're not.” I said with a tone meant to assure here there was nothing to be interrupted, but I'm pretty sure she thought I was lying.
“Okay, well, whenever you two are finished if you could start on the other bathrooms that'd be great.” She flashed us one more `knowing smile' and left. I looked at Justin and we both went into hysterics. We laughed for a good five minutes before we went in the basement to clean that bathroom.
