Chapter 1
Once, ten great and powerful demons roamed the land of Seikan. They were...the Ichibi no Shukaku, Nibi no Nekomata, Sanbi no Isonade, Sibi no Sokou, Gobi no Houkou, Rokubi no Raijuu, Shichibi no Kaku, Hachibi Yamata no Orochi, Kyuubi no Youko, and the Jyuubi no Kurohyou, each named for their number of tails, ranging from one to ten, respectively. Many books were written on their ferocity and monstrosity, and many loathed these demons for the havoc they wreaked. Only a select few knew of their nobility and wisdom. Due to these people, the demons were left alone, but then one day: the Ancient War of the Ten Demons or the Ancient War of the Ten Gods tore apart the land. During these 100 years, tsunamis crashed, earthquakes shook the earth, volcanoes erupted, tornadoes whisked, and thunderstorms boomed through the land. Finally, the people of Seikan were forced to do something, or Seikan would be completely destroyed. It was decided that ten brave warriors would set out to seal the ten demons. They succeeded, but lost their lives. The demons were sealed into ten children, and then the children were sent to another world before they even had any recollection of any of this happening.
Here in this human world, these children grew up together in an enormous mansion. The people from Seikan regularly sent them money so that they would be able to sustain themselves, and so the demons wouldn't return. These children just like you or I grew up without any knowledge of the demons inside them, for in the process of being sealed, the demons had fallen dormant, never to awaken unless brought back to Seikan. The ten kids went to school, and acted completely normal, but each discovered their own special gifts, granted to them by the demons inside them. Naturally, they found these powers strangely fascinating, but kept them hidden from the rest of the world. Never having any parents, these children grew up phenomenally close. They thought this was how they always had lived, as the ten warriors who had died were their parents. This could have been the end of the story, but fifteen years later, something miraculous happened…
"Eleria!!" Yume burst in through the door, screaming like a crazy Amazon warrior yelling a war cry. Her over-exertion of force caused the door to slam into the inner wall, and it slowly drifted back, swinging on its hinges. She stomped into the room, looking the very epitome of rage, "Eleria, you ate the last cookie, for the 36th time!!" The instant she stopped screaming, she was instantly blasted with obnoxiously loud rock music, which earlier her even louder screaming had prevented her from hearing.
& nbsp; The girl named Eleria simply whirled around in her leather roller and wheeled over to the stereo, switching it off without even wincing at the ear-throbbingly loud music. She was obviously used to it. With the music turned off, the room was engulfed in a deafening silence, so sudden that it rang in Yume's ears painfully. Straightening up in her chair once more, Eleria tucked a strand of russet hair behind her ear and smiled at her friend, feigning innocence, "did you say something, Yume?"
& nbsp; "I said you ate the last cookie for the 36th time…" Yume reiterated through gritted teeth, fixing Eleria with her blue-eyed glare.
& nbsp; Jaw dropping in fake astonishment, Eleria pressed a hand to her heart, "me? Sweet, little, amazing me?"
& nbsp; Yume ground her teeth, trying very hard not to punch her friend in the face, "yes Eleria, you, for the 36th time!"
& nbsp; Heaving a small, seemingly regretful sigh, Eleria turned and wheeled her way back to the computer screen with which she had been occupied earlier. Without looking at her friend, she asked, "you actually count how many times I've eaten the last cookie?"
& nbsp; In anger, Yume picked up the stereo and was about to smash it on Eleria's head when suddenly the door opened again, this time much more calmly. In walked Amaya and Mat, both holding something they had probably rummaged from the kitchen. Amaya was in mid bite from her bagel when both of them caught sight of Yume holding the stereo above unknowing Eleria's head.
& nbsp; "Looks like you two are getting along just fine," Mat commented wryly, sipping out of her cup of apple juice.
& nbsp; "We just came to check on Eleria," Amaya explained, "cause we couldn't feel the constant throbbing of her obnoxious stereo anymore. We were afraid she might have died.
"Thanks guys, it's much appreciated," came Eleria's sarcastic tone from in front of the computer screen.
& nbsp; Mat smiled and chirruped brightly, "no problem!"
& nbsp; After a few moments of silence, everyone turned to see Yume huddled in the corner of the room, her knees up to her chest. Her thumb was pressed against her lips, and her ocean blue eyes were wide as she rocked back and forth, "I wanted the last cookie…"
& nbsp; Eleria raised an eyebrow and shrugged nonchalantly, turning back to her computer screen, "hey, I'm taking a quiz called "What's Your Inner Demon?" online. You guys want to try it?"
& nbsp; Instantly both Amaya and Mat did an about-face and walked out the door, muttering "no thanks" and "I'm leaving now." Watching them leave with a slightly sad look, Eleria soon shrugged and brushed it off, pushing it to the back of her mind as she went back to her quiz taking, ignoring the figure of Yume in the corner of her room.
& nbsp; A few minutes passed, and then there was an unmistakable scent that wafted into the room. At first, Eleria didn't notice it, but then as it got stronger, it penetrated even her one-track mind. She tore her face away from the computer screen and glanced around above her head, sniffing and grimacing at the smell. "Is that smoke?" she asked no one in particular, for she had forgotten that Yume was still there.
& nbsp; Right at that moment, there was a loud cry of "oh crap!" from the kitchen area, causing Eleria to sigh and press her fingers to her temple in exasperation. After a few seconds, the same voice spoke in a very nervous tone. "Um…guys, don't worry! Nothing's wrong over here, absolutely nothing! Th-There's no fire, and uh…the kitchen is totally not in flames!" Rolling her eyes, Eleria couldn't suppress an amused smirk from her face as she stood up.
Yume, upon hearing the distressed shouting, stood up as well from her position against the wall. Heading towards the door, she gestured for Eleria to follow, “Come on…” she sighed, “let's go see what Kasai did…this time.”
As soon as the two of them opened the door, they were immediately blasted by a cloud of dark smoke. Coughing and waving their hands in front of their faces to clear the fumes away, Eleria and Yume stumbled their way to the kitchen.
& nbsp; As soon as they entered the room, the smoke gave way to the scalding heat of flames, causing both girls to frown and back off a bit. Before them, Kasai was running back and forth from one end of the kitchen to the other, waving her arms ecstatically in a feeble attempt to put out the flames. The dancing fire roared and flickered from the top of the stove, the heat so intense that the air around it seemed to waver and sway, distorting everyone's sight. Eleria and Yume could feel the heat radiating from the fire as they watched the scene, sighing.
“I got it!” came a voice from further down the hall, and the two girls watched with a slight smile as their friend Vanaren burst through the smoke, coughing and waving her hand. Blinking smoke-induced tears from eyes, she stumbled over to the faucet, despite several protests from the other girls. Turning the water on with a twirl of her hand, Vanaren used her gift to shape the water and direct it at the flames.
A smile crept across the other girls' faces; they had always marveled at the abilities they possessed. Within moments, the fire was gone, but there was more smoke than ever before. The four girls found themselves waving their hands and coughing like crazy.
“Nice…move, Van…” Yume spluttered between coughs, addressing Vanaren by her more commonly used nickname.
“At least it got the fire out,” Vanaren replied, too busy coughing to really retort.
Shielding her face and mouth with her arm, Eleria made her way over to the windows, almost tripping over a chair leg that she couldn't see in the process. Flinging the panels open, she waved her arms in an attempt to get all the smoke out of the house. The fire alarm going off in the hallways made it hard to hear anything else.
Once the majority of the smoke was cleared out, the four girls turned to the devastated kitchen. Pieces of the countertop was blackened, and the top of the stove was so covered in soot that you couldn't even tell it had once been a stove. Portions of the wall were burnt, and everything that wasn't smoldering crusts was covered in water. Needless to say, it was a wreck.
“What were you trying to do?” Vanaren inquired, glancing at Kasai.
“…Make pancakes,” Kasai responded softly, hanging her head slightly, “it didn't work, no duh.”
“Where's everyone else?” Eleria asked randomly, looking around the hallways as the consistent beeping of the fire alarm finally died out, “are we like…the only people who noticed that the kitchen was on fire?”
“Well, the boys went out grocery shopping,” Vanaren explained, “and I don't know where Amaya and Mat are.”
“They were just in my room a moment ago,” Eleria muttered, wondering where they could be, “they can't have not noticed the fire.”
“You'd be surprised,” Kasai objected, “those two are capable of blocking out anything, I swear.”
Yume, on the other hand, was thinking of something else, “wait a second, the boys went grocery shopping?” She inwardly recoiled at the thought, “but we need extra cookies!”
Giving Yume a gentle shove, Eleria sighed, “I'm sure they got more. Connor loves them too, remember?” At that moment, the two females missing in action came up the stairs from the basement. They both stopped and cast their gaze around the wrecked kitchen, and Kasai offered them a nervous smile.
“So that's what the smell was…” Mat murmured as she shook her head.
“We thought we smelled smoke, but were too lazy to see what it was,” Amaya added as they walked up to the other girls and inspected the damage, “so…who's fault?”
Everyone turned to look at Kasai.
Amaya gave Kasai an incredulous look, “what do you think you were doing, you ding-dong!?”
The sound of the door opening interrupted any sort of defense Kasai might've had. “Guys!” a familiar voice sounded from the doorway, “a little help here?” It was Cain, as he stepped through into the house, totting rather large shopping bags in each hand. He stopped and his eyes widened in shock as he caught sight of the kitchen ruins, but decided to say nothing. “Just help get the groceries in…”
Amaya and Mat gave Kasai the `good-going' look as the six of them headed out the door, each dragging in a couple lead weight bags of groceries that were so filled to the brim that they threatened to burst at any second.
“Leave it to the guys to pack the groceries…” Mat muttered as she strained to lug the bag to the burnt kitchen. “Let's just leave them on the floor.”
“You guys burnt the kitchen,” Kaku's voice sounded behind them, “what the hell…”
“Ask Kasai,” Amaya shrugged, “she was the one who tried to cook.”
“Okay, sorry!” Kasai shouted indignantly, “I just tried to make pancakes, alright?”
Stifled laughter was heard in the background, and Kasai turned around to glare at the perpetrator, no doubt Jesper. “I'd like to see you try and make pancakes!”
“I probably could, too,” he retorted, “at least I wouldn't burn the kitchen!”
“Alright guys, break it up, break it up…” Mat stepped between them and pushed them apart, sighing with exasperation. She looked up at the sound of Connor's voice.
“Looks like we're going to have to get a new kitchen…” he murmured, rubbing his temple.
Amaya's “um…yeah” was the only thing audible in the silence that followed.
“Well, we can worry about that later,” Eleria said casually as she turned around, walking over to the closet and hoisting her backpack onto her shoulder, “we have school to get to.” After staring at the kitchen for another few moments, the other nine followed suit and they headed out the door, walking to school together as they always did.
“What kind of weirdoes get up early in the morning to go grocery shopping before school anyway?” Eleria piped up again on their way to school, hefting her backpack a little higher up.
“Someone needed to get food,” Kaku reasoned.
“We were running out of cookies,” Connor added on afterwards.
Yume shot Eleria a look, which Eleria, of course, didn't even notice. Giving up, Yume poked her friend, “like you're one to talk Eleria. You were up before any of us, taking quizzes online!”
Holding her hands up placatingly, Eleria was about to say something in return when Amaya spoke first, “she probably pulled another all-nighter. For like, the fifth time since the start of the school year. It's a miracle you still manage to get halfway decent grades.” At this accusation, Eleria whistled and shifted her eyes, golden irises focusing on everything besides the rest of her friends. Amaya rolled her eyes, “thought so.”
They were almost perfectly normal fifteen year olds. They went to school; they went shopping, set kitchens on fire. If it weren't for a war, this would probably be the end of the story. Little did they know, their lives were about to change. Forever.
