A Lover's Game
Game 1: Entanglement
Sora Harada and her younger sister Shouko both exchanged looks as their mother and father both made way to the dinner table that evening. That whole evening, Sora and Shouko were oblivious at the occasion being held. Both their parents were in formal dressings—a pretty green dress and a suit. Sora and Shouko on the other hand were in their school uniform.
“So, what's going on?” Sora finally asked their parents once they settled down a bit. “Is there something that Shouko and I don't know? You two looked awfully formal today. And what's with the atmosphere of this restaurant?!”
“Sora, I brought you a dress. Change it.” Her mother's dull voice spoke as if she doesn't take a “no” for an answer. Like her mother have expected, Sora's eyes rose up and her face sent out a disgusting look.
“What!” Sora blurted, capturing most attention around them.
“Sis!” Shouko tug Sora's top. “Stop being so loud. Mother looks furious.”
“You got to be kidding me?” Sora continued.
“I'm perfectly aware how much you hate dressing like a girl, but you just have to learn to change your ways.” The smooth and tame tone of the sisters' mother was shaking—hard to resist from yelling. Her eyes were not on Sora but on the table clothing, avoiding eye contact with her daughter. She knew well that once their eyes have met, the argument will never be over.
“I'm not doing it.” Sora sat back down and crossed her arms. She gave her mother a careless look. “You can't make me.”
Breathing hard in her mind, her mother slightly glared at Sora and then yelled out, “this is getting ridiculous!”
“What is?!” Sora yelled back.
“You just have to change your ways! I'm not going to let you do what you want from now on!”
“I don't understand you! What is so important about being ladylike! It's disgusting!”
“Sora—all I ever wanted was for you to become more like a girl!”
“I am a girl!”
“---mother? Sis?” Shouko mumbled their names but no one heard her.
Glaring at one another, the Harada family did not notice that their guests had arrived. The Sawatari family was all dressed in elegant and dashing outfits. As everyone welcomed one another, Sora found herself staring at the guy from the Hawatari family. He was sitting down right across from her. He looked like a perfect gentleman, yet something mysterious and strange was lurking.
“This is my daughter Shouko and Sora. I'm sorry for their rude appearances. They have only arrived from school.” Mrs. Harada said to their guests in her most polite voice.
“So this is Sora…” Mrs. Hawatari looked at Sora with big eyes and smile. “How handsome you look!” She laughed. “Shouko, you look very lovely.”
“Handsome?” Sora muttered the word slightly to herself. “What the heck is that?”
Exchanging looks, Mrs. Harada suddenly cleared her throat. “We all came here to hear very important announcements.” She said.
“Announcements?” Shouko stared at Sora, who doesn't look like she's paying attention.
“Mrs. Sawatari and I have decided to engage Sora and Shin.” Mrs. Harada announced.
A long silence came from Sora and out of nowhere; she stood up and slammed onto the table. “You got to be kidding me! There's no way I'm engaging with him!” she pointed at Shin. “Look at him! He's too---outdated!”
“Outdated?” Mrs. Sawatari laughed. “Sora, you are so funny! It would be so fun to have you as a daughter-in-law! I can't wait!” she continued to laugh.
“No! I mean it!” Sora exclaimed. “Shouko make some sense in them!” she demanded her sister, yet Shouko only shrugged helplessly in return. “I'm not going through with this!” she snapped and stomped out of the restaurant without another word.
“Shin honey, why don't you follow your fiancée?” Mrs. Sawatari suggested still giggling away in content. “Seemed like you and her have a lot to catch up.”
“Yes mother.” Shin answered with a goodbye bow to his in-law-family and left after Sora.
OH, I FEEL SO BAD FOR SIS. Shouko thought to herself as she watched her future brother-in-law go after Sora.
Sora stomped away from the fancy restaurant. Extremely angry and with steam rising from her head, Sora couldn't help but yelled out, “WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH HER?!” Quickly, everyone around her stopped what they were doing and stared at her as if she's some crazy lunatic. Returning their stares, they quickly returned to what they were doing. Sighing a bit for relief, Sora frowned. “What is she thinking? Getting me engaged? That won't do anything to me. I won't go through with it. She should know better.” Talking to herself, she didn't realize that Shin was right beside her, nodding in agreement.
“I totally agreed.” Shin answered. “Why do we have to get engage if we don't like one another?”
“Acck!” Sora froze in shock as she finally noticed him. “What the hell are you doing here?” she asked him.
“I came and chased my humble fiancée.” He answered with a simple yet annoying smile.
“Well get away outdate.” Sora answered. She walked faster; hoping to lose him yet with his long legs, catching up with her was effortless.
“If you hate it so much, why don't we do something about it?” Shin insisted.
“What do you have in mind, outdate?” Sora answered.
“Let's make it a bet. Whoever breaks up the engagement will become the master of the other.” Shin answered. “Time limit—until the engagement breaks. How about that?” Shin asked her.
Sora quickly stopped walking and glared evilly at Shin. “You may look outdated, but damn, you're personality and twisted!” she exclaimed. “Deal! I accept your challenge!”
Shouko watched her family and the Sawatari family enjoying their dinner together while her eyes continued to trail off toward the entrance doors. She couldn't help but wonder if Shin was able to bring back Sora. After all, she had been counting to see Sora and Shin enter the restaurant again, together. But who was she kidding? Frowning, the door bell of the restaurant suddenly tingled together and appeared the prince and Cinderella. They both were walking together, side by side, and had smiles on their faces. As they approached the table, everyone went quiet and shock.
“Hi.” Sora waved at Shouko and her family. She quickly took her seat beside Shouko. Shin did the same. He took his seat across from Sora and send out a wicked smile to Sora. Watching them, Shouko could feel the atmosphere around them changing.
“Sorry about what happen earlier!” Sora quickly apologized like a good kitten. “I was way out of my mind! I was just really hot!” Quickly, Sora unbuttoned her school jacket and quickly undressed herself also letting loose of one of the buttons on top of her white blouse. Everyone at the table went awe. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING. Sora wickedly smirked.
[A few minutes ago]
“Okay, tell me a few things that your mother doesn't like.” Sora asked Shin as they both sat down together at the small café nearby the restaurant.
“Something my mother doesn't like. Oh, she hates the type who suddenly takes off their clothes or wear clothes really improper.” He answered. “And she hates when they chew gum before any meal! She thinks it's bad for the health. Oh, she also don't like when someone slurp loudly at the table.” He smiled. “How's that?”
“Okay, what my mother don't like is being called on during the table. She loves quality time with family. She thinks it's rude. She also hates it when the person is greedy and impolite. You see how she was. And another thing is that she hates when you eat while you talk.”
“Alright.” Shin almost laughed. “Your mother really want you to become ladylike because you have all those features your mother hates right?” he asked.
“Shut up, you outdated man!” Sora barked at him. “You better remind them well!”
“Same goes for you.” Shin answered.
“I won't lose to you.” Sora answered. “You haven't seen what I can do just yet!”
“Same here.” Shin replied. “I might just bring out the devil in this outdated man.” He smirked. “Shall we go back, my bride?”
“Ugh! Do not use those kinds of cheesy words!” Sora answered, standing up.
They both left for the restaurant and the game began.
[Present time]
The meals were served. Soup was the first thing on the menu. Without much waiting, Sora quickly grabbed onto her spoon and like Shin had mentioned about the slurping, she gave a loud slurped. The whole entire table went quiet. Shin, at the back of his face, laughed.
“What?” Sora looked at everyone acting as if nothing happened. She took another loud slurp and quickly Shouko hit her gently by the arm.
“Sis, what are you doing?” Shouko whispered as everyone else tried to regard what happened. “You're acting kind of weird. Are you okay?”
“I'm perfectly well.” Sora answered with a smile. “I'm eating soup.”
“You're not eating soup. You're slurping it!” Shouko answered.
“Same thing. You should try it too.” Sora answered.
“Sis, you're just weird right now.” Shouko moved away from her sister.
Returning to her slurp, Shin's phone suddenly ranged. Peeking at the corner of her eyes, she found Shin picking up his phone without any manners. At the side, she could see her mother going to shock. After all, who could have known that Shin has a devil in him behind his outdated look? She smiled happily, continuing slurping.
“Ah! Tsumura!” Shin called his friend's name. “No, I'm not busy. I'm just in the middle of dinner with my family and the Harada's. No! You don't have to hang up! It's no problem! I do this all the time. What did you say? You want to hang out? Right now? Sure, but it'll have to be after dinner. What are we having? Soup right now. Dang, I'm so hungry! These people need to hurry up with our meals!” As he continued to speak, Shouko again tugged against her sister's arm.
“What?” Sora whispered to Shouko.
“Sis, what is happening?” Shouko asked them. “Shin-san is acting a little weird.”
“Really?” Sora raised her eyebrow. “I don't see him weird? Maybe he's just wicked like that.” She answered.
“No!” Shouko shook her head. “Something is definitely going on! What did you both do?!”
“Nothing.” Sora smiled. “Nothing at all.”
“Shin…” Mrs. Sawatari finally mumbled something breaking the conversation between Sora and Shouko and Shin and his friend Tsumura. “Why don't you let the phone down and enjoy our dinner?” she politely asked. “You're not paying any attention to your fiancée.”
“Oh, right. Tsumura, I'll call your right back.” Shin quickly hang up the phone and cleared his throat. “Let's enjoy our soup.” He gave a simple smile at everyone and ate his soup.
When everyone was finished their soups, the main course came. It was Italian spaghetti. As everyone lifted up their fork to enjoy their meal, Sora suddenly dug into her bag and pulled out a pack of gum. “Hey Shouko, do you want one?” she asked.
“Sis, we're eating.” Shouko answered.
“My breath stinks from the soup.” Sora answered. “I need gum right now.” She quickly popped a gum into her mouth and began chewing it loudly, making sure that Mrs. Sawatari could see her nice and clear. At the back of her mind, she was laughing, having fun. Her mother, who quickly sent out an evil glare at Sora, tried hard to calm herself. But before anyone could get their first bite of their delicious looking spaghetti, Shin quickly engulfed his in a few bites and quickly grabbed onto Sora's plate.
“I'm hungry.” He told her, taking her plate. “You don't mind if I take yours right?” Without her answer, he took her plate and exchanged it with his. While eating, he continued to speak. “Oh, Shouko-chan, it seemed that you're not hungry, can I get yours too?” he asked. And again, without Shouko's answer, Shin took her plate and slid the spaghetti into his plate. Shouko who was speechless watched her sister chew gum and Shin, eating while talking. WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON?! Her mind exploded.
Finally, the dinner ended with hungry Sora and Shouko greeting the Sawatari while extremely full Shin waved gently at the Harada. As soon as the Sawatari left, Mrs. Harada let out an angry scream. “WHAT IN THE WORLD IS WRONG WITH YOU, SORA?!” she barked angrily. “WHAT THE HELL WAS WITH DINNER?!”
“Oh, I'm just not fond of Italian cuisine.” Sora answered. She turned to Shouko, who looked like she'll cry of starvation. “Oh, Shouko, would you like to go out with me for some ramen?” she asked.
“Oh, sure.” Shouko nodded.
“Sora! Tell me!” her mother continued to barked.
“You got what you wanted!” Sora yelled back. “I had dinner with my so-call outdated fiancé! You should be happy.” Without another sound, Sora quickly pulled her jacket back on and buttoned it and then left the restaurant with Shouko following closely by. It was only the beginning of the game. What else can Sora and Shin cook up next?
