One Weird Day

Luneta was being a real bitch, excuse my French. We were just trying to get to know why this Kyle knew a bit more than he should have. Maybe we were being a bit paranoid, but we eventually just dragged him to our apartment. What else could we do? I read his mind. He didn't have great living arrangements, and if we didn't tote him back with us, we probably never would have gotten a hold of him again. Anyways, he came with us to our apartment. None of us were really all that comfortable with him there, and he with us, but we made it through. And then morning came. And oh, boy, did it come… In the morning, Luneta and I got up before the mortal did. But… there was this weird… Well, the only way I can explain it, is a wave. It felt like water, but you could tell it was a very strong spirit of sorts. I'm not sure exactly what happened, but apparently I was in a bit of a daze, because the next thing I remember after this fleeting… wave, was Luneta standing next to me in the kitchen. I was at the small kitchenette table. I was probably sitting there for about five minutes in a paralyzed state. I finally regained all of my senses and thoughts after Luneta asked where Kyle was. Without thinking, I pointed to her room, where Kyle was still sleeping. She disappeared into the area for a moment. I was a bit curious myself, so I stood up slowly and walked to the door, and apparently too quietly, because when Luneta walked out, she almost ran into me.

I saw what she was thinking… she thinks Kyle's a part of the spirit world like vampires, except a different being. He wasn't a vampire. He was too young. And if he was, then he probably would've died from not being exposed to other vampires and learning that he needed to drink blood on a regular schedule.

If vampires don't drink blood routinely, then they die a slow death. For every day that goes by that one does not feast, they get weaker and weaker. We can go for probably a month without noticing much of a difference in behavior. But after that, we get cranky and tired, a bit like PMS, eh? If we go too long without blood… well, we become sick in our own way. We get a sickness we call bloodlust. We go into a trancelike state and can't focus on anything outside our minds. If we don't get blood within a certain amount of time, then many things can happen. Some vampires will throw up, or dry heave. Some will go on a killing rampage, and some will even go into seizures, possibly even a coma. If we are sent to the hospital, and have a blood transfusion, then these effects will recede some, but not much or for very long. You learn a lot when you live for more than two hundred years, huh?

Luneta and I went out to the living room, just to wait until Kyle woke up. We watched a bit of TV, in the offing. But you know Luneta. She can't be still for very long. She kept on changing positions, ending up in an odd one with her legs hanging over one arm, and her back resting on the other arm. I got up once to go get a snack from the kitchen. I got an orange… well, it could've been a blood orange, but that would've been the worst pun I've ever heard, so I grabbed a regular orange!

I was thinking about whose day it was to clean the kitchen it was. I had noticed that it wasn't the cleanest. I was just about to get up and begin to scrub the kitchen, when Kyle finally got up. Jeez, I didn't know anyone could sleep that much. Well, I've never gotten more than six hours of sleep. Too many things to do during the day, that you can't do when it's dark, or when you're asleep. He slept maybe, eight hours. That's the norm for humans, I've learned.

He walked out into the kitchen area, but quickly turned around and went back into the room, for the fact that he had nothing on except boxers. Smooth one, sir. He came back out a minute or so later with the clothing he had on earlier that morning. I invited him to the couch on which I was sitting when he came out. We, of course, got the first question out. Well, I did. Luneta didn't want anything to do with this guy. But she was being way too sensitive about it. And she knew this too. Read `er mind. I asked him how long he's been able to tell things about people without directly being told. He said he didn't know, and was about to say something else, but he discontinued his sentence for the fear of making no sense. But not too much doesn't make sense to a vampress. I mean, they're a mystical being. That's pretty unbelievable in itself. And… for some reason, I was unable to tap his mind. It was very odd. It's never happened before. Not that I could remember… Like on a computer when it says “access denied.” Because that's what it was, was my access was not allowed. And I didn't think that was possible. But now that I think about it, I do remember instances in the past that I was unable mind tap. But I never thought anything of it. I wasn't tapping their minds for something important. It was for something really small. So I never stored it in my “important” files in my head.

Luneta was still in her grumpy mood, so when she was being a bighead, when she corrected me that we're vampresses not vampires, because that's apparently important now. I quickly sent her a message by telepathy to just sit there and be pretty. I hope she hated it, coming back to bite her in the butt. I gave her a look, too, that I didn't think was possible for me to achieve. She deserved it. I've never been so mad at her.

I finally got past the rudeness and asked him again for an answer. “Please, just tell us some information about your powe-” and I stopped myself there. I didn't really want to make it sound like he had powers. I mean, I would totally freak if someone were to just come out to me and say “OMG, you have magical powers!! W00T!” Okay, well maybe it wouldn't be in that dialect, but you get the idea.

“Um… yeah… Power. Right. I really wish it was that easy and helpful. All I can do is infer things. And it just so happens to be right.” Kyle tried explaining.

“So you think that since you're right about what you say every time, it's just a coincidence? Wow… you are naïve.” Luneta just never learns when to shut her smart mouth!

“As much as I hate to admit it, she's right. We don't think that it's just a coincidence every time you assume something. So far, everything you've said has been absolutely true. Except for the little thought of the undead legion. But that is common folklore, so that's understandable.” See, how easy that was? I chose the kinder way to say the same thing. Luneta wasn't one to do small talk; she always got right to the point. And there's nothing wrong with that. It's her personality, but she needs to work on the rudeness factor.

“Well, I've been able to guess right for as long as I can remember. Though that's not all that long. I don't remember much before the age of ten. But from then on, at least, I've had this ability.” Now, that's what I've been looking for, Kyle. Thank you for cooperating.

“Okay, so I've gotten enough information… what's your first question? We'll take turns.” I said lightly.

“I want to know how you guys met. How you found one another…” I could understand why he would want to know that. It doesn't seem too easy to find one other person in the world that's just like you. In fact, it was pretty weird how we met.

“Well, that's an odd story to tell. It's not all that short, either. Gotta go to the bathroom?” It was more of a hypothetical question, but he still shook his head no. “Good. Well, I was about thirty years old, and she was in her late twenties. This was way back, a very long time ago. Oh, by the way, we're more than two hundred years old. We age slowly, almost not at all. We do go through the child aging process, and that happens at the normal human rate. We don't even fully awaken as vampires until the teenage years. We can go through our child years without feasting, but once we get into our teenage years, we get these odd desires to bite things and people. Mostly people, if you couldn't guess. And the very first time that one would bite a human, things would suddenly make sense. It's as if the blood of a human was stimulating. We immediately knew that we were vampires, and we knew that we had to keep this a secret from those who would shun us. We knew that we had to feed every so often, and right after we drink for the first time, our powers are usable, and our energy increases twenty fold. When I drank for the first time, I was at a park, when I saw a boy that looked like he could use a picker upper. So I called him over, and after a while, he went in for a kiss, but I ended up biting his neck. Luneta, wanna share your first bite?” I asked calmly. I hoped she would just cooperate.

“Yeah, yeah, I was in a foster care. My parents died blah blah blah, and I was sent to some creepy orphanage place, and there was this one janitor that was always really weird. Well, one day, he started sexually harassing one of the smaller girls that I was really good friends with. Since I didn't have many friends, she was my very best friend. Almost like a sister. Anyways, I saw him harassing her, and I snuck up behind him, tapped on his shoulder, and he turned around. I suddenly got this urge to bite his neck, so that's exactly what I did. Afterwards, I picked him up and threw him against a wall. I think I broke his leg, but I didn't stay long enough to find out. I stayed away from that building for about a month, but I went back eventually, for fear of anyone messing with Cara. That was the little girl that I considered a sister. But… when I did travel back to that hellhole, I discovered that she had been adopted in the time I was gone. I knew that no one would be able to resist that adorable little face of hers. But when I was living there, every time someone would come, looking to adopt a child, she and I would be found in our room playing a game together. And if the couple saw what kind of person this child was playing with, they no longer wanted to adopt a cute face. They were all scared of me, and that's why the orphanage took advantage of my absence.” Wow… I didn't realize Luneta was going to tell her entire story… It kind of looked as if she was spacing.

Kyle just stared for a minute. I guess he was taken aback. I was, even. Luneta hadn't been this calm since Kyle's been in the apartment. Or revealing. I think she realized that there was no way around the point of Kyle staying here. Or maybe the aliens came and abducted her common sense and personality… both options were equally plausible. And made about as much sense as the other. But then, she snapped back to her normal pissy attitude.

“Are you just gonna sit there and stare? I've heard that staring is rude. I'm sure that you've heard that before…” she rolled her eyes and averted her gaze back to the TV. She was obviously referring to the earlier morning. Because she never lets things go. She won't trust many people, because of what happened to Cara, and men will never be trusted because of it. Many of the things that happened way back in her younger years are ones she will never be able to let go. It doesn't faze me though, because she's learned to trust me, for I'm the only one that she knows that is at all like her. And I will accept her without wanting to change a thing about her. And because I am like the mother that she was never fortunate enough to have…

“I-I'm sorry… I didn't mean f-for you to answer… like that…” Kyle glanced down to where his feet were on our nice white carpet. There were another couple of minutes of awkward silence, except for the salesman on the television speaking. Kyle still looked a bit nervous… he couldn't stop jittering. I thought about what should be said to make things more comfortable for everyone, and the only thing I could think of, came spilling out of my mouth.

“Uhh… well, if no one wants to ask any more questions today, then let's go to Kyle's apartment to gather his clothing items and stuff. I think he's going to stay with us for a bit longer.” They both nodded in agreement, but the tension definitely grew as you would expect. Luneta changed out of her house coat into some of her normal, concealing clothes, and I changed into my normal, revealing clothes… I'd pay anyone to tell me a day I wore an outfit where my legs, shoulders, stomach or back isn't showing. Ever since I've started clothing myself, and that I've grown into these, I've known, that to get what I want, all I need to do is please the audience. But I still don't completely sell my body… but when I'm weak and need blood, it doesn't hurt.

They both grabbed a drink to go, and I grabbed the keys. I don't think I'd trust either of them with my baby… ever. We walked down the flight of stairs, from the second floor apartments, and across the parking area. My blue car waited close to where we were, and I unlocked it with the remote key. There were two beeps, and everyone opened their corresponding doors and sat inside the car. There was silence, before I decided to turn on the radio. I don't think they were listening to it, and I knew I wasn't, but it was better than silence.

I didn't know how to get to his house, so before long, I had to ask him where he lived. He lived in a neighborhood that was a bit north of where we were. There were a couple of turns that I took quite unconsciously until I got into an unfamiliar area. Then I actually had to pay attention to the bad directions. Take a left back there, oh, no, wait, you haven't missed it yet, and so on. About another ten minutes of that, and we were in front of an apartment building that had a roof that most likely leaked, walls that looked like they were in dire need for a paint job, inside and out, and almost no cars in the parking area. I guess if you could only afford to live here, then you couldn't exactly afford luxury items, a car being one of them, and a steady food supply being another…

Kyle showed us to his and his room mate's room, which, like mine and Luneta's was on the second floor of the building. He grabbed a key from his wrinkled pants pocket, stabbed the lock with the old key, and jiggled the key jerkily, until the door moved from its previous position. It was mostly quiet in this small two room place… there was a voice in the background, though. Kyle's room mate perhaps? As we moved swiftly along, as Kyle did, his room mate's words became more and more clear.

”No, no. They can do more than that… they just need some training and then they'll be able to be introduced to the other side… No, but if I do it too soo-” he broke off. Apparently whoever was on the other line of the phone hung up on the poor guy. I wonder what he was talking about... Hmm. But I'm not the one to pry, that's Luneta's job. But even she wasn't asking questions. Her vibes were very nervous. She didn't seem comfortable in this apartment. And I knew I wasn't.

The entire place had a weird aura all in its own. It's like the place was a living thing… or contained something that is living, and its aura just seems to consume that of the house. But for that to be true, this thing has to be one of the most powerful things I have ever felt. But that's no surprise… I'm still young in vampire years. Still haven't reached my peak in vampirism. Luneta, too. We haven't experienced most of the things that the vampires before us have. And I guess that's for the better. Most of those things that the other vampires experienced led to their demise. These memories are stimulated when the thought of being a vampire is; when we have our first bite. We get the memories of our corresponding vampire of another life. There have always been two per generation. They have distinct personality traits, and that is how they correspond with the next generation. Luneta has the memories of one set of the previous vampires, and I have the other half.

Back to the aura, though. As we walked throughout a couple of the rooms, it seemed thinner than when we walked in… or maybe I had just been getting used to it. But… when we went past one of the doors, I got a pang of the odd feeling air, so strong I stopped in my tracks. Luneta was behind me at the time, so she kind of fell onto my back. Kyle looked back, and shook some sense back into the both of us. The sense didn't seem to bother him. I'm sure that if it had, he would have noticed it, living here, and all.

Walking through the small kitchen, into the seemingly smaller living room, we spotted a scrawny looking boy with baggy pants and shirt (minus the shirt…) and light messy hair. He kind of twitched at the sight of the three of us. He didn't seem to realize that we had been in the apartment. He stood up and broke the silence between us all.

"Greetings, Kyle… Sooo, who're your nice looking friends??" This human was different. But I've had enough of different for the last few days, so I switched my mind scanner to OFF! I didn't want to have to deal with more different people than I needed. And I knew that I only needed to deal with Kyle at the moment, thank you.

"Er… yeah, this is Sorina, and that's Luneta. They, uh…" he didn't seem to know what to say to cover for his night away from home, so I chimed in.

"He was reeeeally drunk last night, so we took him home with us!" … Wow… That was probably the worst thing I could've said… the looks on everyone's faces (including my own) proved it to be so. "No!! That's not what I meant! We didn't take advantage or anything! We just didn't want him to get hurt… or arrested, so we escorted him to our home, and let him sleep it off. Heh, I guess it came out wrong the first time." I blushed, and looked down.

"Uhh… yeeeaaaah… um, Kyle, can you please go get something from my car? You know me, super lazy man, not at your service!" this roommate of Kyle's was a bit suspicious if you ask me. Regardless, Kyle nodded and walked out the door, not even realizing that he didn't know what he was retrieving.

The second the door closed, and you could no longer hear the footsteps outside, Room mate Man pulled both Luneta and me into the kitchen. He grabbed a cell phone from his pocket, and used the quick access to dial a number by pressing one button, while he whispered to us.

"Sorina, blood type A negative, five feet, nine inches, eye color, indigo, age- 218 years, currently a vampress in training. Luneta, blood type A positive, five feet, one inch, eye color, green-brown, age- 216, also a vampress in training." Both Luneta and I stood there dumbfounded. How in the WORLD could he know that much information… and how did he know we were vampresses??? Everything I could think about led to a "how" question.

"I just recited the information to them. Yes… yes, they're here. Yeah, I know it's ahead of schedule… don't tell ME what to do!! No! There's no way!" he spoke into his small black phone. He flipped it closed and looked at Luneta and me in the eyes. "Yes. I know that you're part of the mystical world, and no, I'm not going to tell anyone. Kyle already knows, right?" we nodded as we heard the door creaking open once more. "Speak of the devil…" Kyle walked in, a bit embarrassed that he left without even asking what he was going out to get.

"I… forgot to ask what I was going to go get…" he stared at the floor, a common place for eyes to focus.

"Just forget about it, Kyle, and come and sit in the living room with the girls and me." He led all of us to the small room, furnished only, in two small couches, one side table, and a very humble TV. Luneta and I sat on one couch, as the boys sat on the other.

"Just to get this clear: we all know that Luneta and Sorina are vampresses, correct?" of course, we all just nodded, Kyle being taken aback a bit, for this little amount of information he thought only he knew. "But apparently, I'm the only one who knows what Kyle is, and what his potentials are. Oh, and how to get to the mystical world from this dimension." Wow, that was a lot of information for just a twenty second speech. I even saw Luneta's mouth opened a bit.

I blinked a couple more times, and blurted out, "So, who are you, to know all of this??"

"I am but a lowly demon hunter recruited by the Great Shalei, sent not to kill demons, but more of, return them to the mystical world, for a profit." That was a straightforward answer…

"But I don't ever see anything but humans or animals or whatever in the human world…" Luneta was still confuzzled.

"Well, I guess I'm doing a good job then, eh?" I narrowed my eyes at this smart-alecky comment. I've known many smart-alecks in my day, but right off the bat, he was near the top of the list.

"Okaaayy, so, what now?" I was becoming impatient, might I add.

"What do you mean 'what now?'" Oh, please, you know exactly what I mean, I thought to myself.

"You are a bounty hunter of sorts, okay, I understand that, but what did you mean by 'I'm the only one who knows what Kyle is' and 'I know how to get to the mystical world.'" I said with a smile, trying to lighten things up a bit.

He turned to speak directly at me, and started with, "Well, Kyle isn't, as you may suspect, a human. I know this is news for you, Kyle, but it's very true. You are, what is called, a Saranai. Obviously there are more mystical beings than just vampires. What would I do after I captured you two? I mean; you're the only two vampires on earth." He shrugged, and carried on. "Saranai, as I've been observing, have unique properties, only found in their breed. Yes, it is like vampires and Saranai are completely different subjects, and they are. I've been to the mystical world a couple of times, and each time, I think I've been introduced to at least one different breed of demon. There are your run of the mill werewolves, and other beings that humans thought only to be part of fairy tales, like unicorns and elves. But the pictures of these beings that the humans come up with are completely off. For elves, the closest humans have ever gotten to the real picture of them, is in the movie trilogy 'Lord of the Ring.' But that picture only applies if the elf wants to be seen. Elves have the power of invisibility. And the same goes for the unicorn and werewolves, and so on. Ask any human to draw a picture of a unicorn; you get a horse varying in color, with a swirled horn on its head. But, like I said before, that is but a thought passed down through generations of stories, and so on. Humans really have no idea what any of these things look or act like… well, they SHOULDN'T, but there was a small breech in the line between the mystical world, and this one. It was back in the medieval times, when people were to have seen unicorns, and dragons, and other things of the sort. They did in fact see them, but that problem only lasted for a while. It happened because of what's called the 'DrO' which stands for 'Dragon Outbreak.' One of the strongest dragons in the mystical world was able to rupture the border between the two, and made the mystical world and the human dimension one in the same. But, thankfully, the Elfin people of Bartholomew were able to reconstruct the boundary without much damage being done. And thank goodness that the Great Shalei was there. He was the previous major demon hunter before I came along. He relocated the Mysticals so they could do no more harm to the humans. He was granted immortality by the Elves of Bartholomew for thanks of protecting the humans, and the demons. Even if it was for a profit, it was still a noble thing… to…" apparently, this room mate man talked himself tired, because his eyelids slowly drooped down, and his head fell a bit and he began snoring softly.

"Um, I don't know about you guys, but I'm really confused. I guess we'll have to wait until he wakes back up to ask questions, because when he drifts to sleep like this, he's out for half a day." Kyle seemed to know a lot about his room mate's sleep patterns. But Luneta and I don't even know his name yet!

Questions filled my head, but I realized I wouldn't even remember them once he awoke, because they just kept flooding in. My mind was filled to capacity with questions.

But, as I've mentioned before, they will just have to wait until this guy wakes up. In the meantime, Luneta, Kyle, and I would converse between ourselves, telling the others the questions that arose in our minds.

Sucky ending, I know, just leave me alone, will ya? I needed to end this chapter before it got out of control…

Chapter Five is on it's way!!

Wow, this one turned out about twice as long as previous chapters xD

OMG, I just realized, when I was writing the part after Luneta told them to stop staring, when she described her past, that what Sorina was thinking about sounded like a conversation I had with on of my best friends the other day… My little Puppy, you understand this. I guess these characters turn out to be more like my friends and me than I aim for them to be…
