The relatively pretty woman at the desk looked up. She had thin blonde hair pulled back in a tight ponytail and her dark rimmed glasses sat low on her nose. She wore scrubs that had various kinds of cats printed on them. She looked like she was doing some paperwork when Robert came up to the desk.
“ Can I help you sir? “ She said without setting down her pen.
“ Yes. I'm Robert Hughes. I called earlier about some test results, “ Robert explained. He tried not to let on he was nervous as Hell. He couldn't help but be considering what he had ahead of him.
The woman looked to her left and picked up two legal sized envelopes, “ Yes. We were expecting you. The fee for extra copies is five dollars. “
Robert got his wallet out and handed the woman a five. He had ordered an extra one to give to Pauline. She handed him the envelopes, the papers feeling like they weighed a ton in his hand. “ Here you go sir. “
“ Thank you, “ Robert muttered as he stared at them.
The woman arched an eyebrow after Robert lingered for a few moments, “ Is there anything else? “
Robert shook his head, “ No. “
“ Okay then. Have a good day, “ The woman went back to her work.
“ Yeah, “ Robert turned slowly, heading back out to the parking lot. He got into his car but didn't start it right away. Instead, he stared at the envelopes as he held them against the steering wheel. 'Results of Test For: Hughes', was all that was printed on the both labels.
He set one of the packets aside and opened the other. He tried to keep his bandaged hand steady as he slid the results out of the envelope. He ignored all the information at the top of the page, his eyes going to the simple statement at the near bottom of the sheet. 'Results: Robert Ashley Hughes is excluded as the biological father of Alexander Ashley Hughes.'
He re-read the sentence a couple times to make sure the words meant what they meant. He then flipped to the second page, finding the possibility of him being Alex's father was as close to none as he could get. His hands began to shake as a hard lump rose in his throat, his lower lip trembling and tears coming to his eyes. He threw the papers aside before putting his hands over his face, his tears coming hard and fast.
He cried for what seemed like an eternity. He wondered why things had turned out to be nothing like he had thought they were. Finally, he took a deep breath and started the car. He had made up his mind to let Pauline have a chance to explain herself.
The way she had sounded on the phone made Robert feel like even she was in the dark about the truth. After all, she hadn't been a poster child for chastity in college. There was a chance, albeit a slim one, she didn't even know Robert wasn't Alex's father. He would give her the papers and see where it went from there.

Daniel looked over at Branslav as they looked for snacks. They were in a truck stop in between Twin Falls and Boise Idaho. The Twin Falls Twins had beaten The Supernovas the night prior by three points. Daniel had almost tied the game with a three point shot at the buzzer but the referees said the ball wasn't out of his hand before the buzzer went off.
“ What's bugging you man? “ Daniel asked after noting Branslav seemed rather pensive and unhappy. He had been that way since they had left Reno Sunday but finally got the nerve to ask him what was wrong. He got the expected angry glare then Branslav relented, sighing.
“ Friday, “ Branslav muttered as he grabbed a couple of bags of peanuts.
Daniel furrowed his brow, “ We'll beat The Turquoise next time. I can't believe you're still hung up over that. “
“ It's not the game I'm hung up over, “ Branslav said.
“ Then what is it? “ Daniel asked. He then arched an eyebrow, “ Is it about your date? “
Branslav nodded, “ Yes. “
“ How did that go anyway? “ Daniel grabbed a candy bar.
“ It went terrible, “ Branslav muttered.
Daniel rolled his eyes, “ I figured that much by your tone. What happened? “
“ She was ice cold, “ Branslav said. “ I took her to my favorite place to eat and tried to talk to her but all she wanted to do was leave. I don't even think she was listening to the things I was saying to her. “
“ Ouch, “ Daniel said as they walked over to the cooler. He opened it and grabbed two sodas, handing one to Branslav.
“ I just don't know what I did wrong, “ Branslav shook his head. “ I went out of my way to get together with her and it was a total bust. “
“ Maybe not, “ Daniel shrugged. “ It was just one date. “
“ Three, “ Branslav muttered. “ It was three dates. “
“ Three? “ Daniel arched an eyebrow. “ How you figure that? “
“ The two times she went out with Robert and I then the one with just me, “ Branslav held up three fingers.
“ I don't think you should count the times with Robert, “ Daniel said. “ That was just hanging out. “
“ Well it was supposed to be dates, “ Branslav demanded. “ It was just supposed to be the two of us for two days. “
Daniel put his empty hand up, “ Okay then. See it how you want. Did you ever find out why Robert didn't answer Friday? “
Branslav nodded, “ Robert said he dropped his phone in the car. He didn't know I called until they got back in it. “
Daniel nodded, “ Oh. How was lunch that day? “
Branslav frowned, “ You don't want to know. “
“ Yeah I do, “ Daniel said. “ What happened? “
“ She paid more attention to Robert than she did to me again, “ Branslav sighed. “ She paid more attention to him the night before too. “
Daniel recalled Robert had been very down the last time he saw him. “ Maybe she was just being nice considering she had front row seats to that fight Robert had with his wife the other night. He was really messed up when I saw him Friday. “
“ I know all about it, “ Branslav growled. “ That's still no excuse to treat me the way they did. “
“ So are you going to see her again? “ Daniel asked. “ I mean, if she was that rude... “
“ She wasn't rude, “ Branslav corrected Daniel. “ I think Robert just had her distracted. He monopolized her attention completely. “
Daniel shrugged, “ Whatever man. Are you going to see her again? “
“ I don't know, “ Branslav sighed. “ She said she'd get a ticket on her own and come to the game this coming Friday. I don't know if she will though. “
“ Do you have her number? “ Daniel asked. “ You could always call and ask her. “
“ I don't have it, “ Branslav shook his head. “ When I asked for it online, she said her phone was busted and she couldn't give it to me then. “
“ Get it from her when she gets the phone back then, “ Daniel said.
“ How? “ Branslav arched an eyebrow. “ I don't even know if I'll see her again to get it. “
Daniel thought about it then nodded. “ Point taken. “
They made their way to the cash register. They were silent until they got to the cashier. Branslav paid for his stuff and Daniel did the same. They walked out to the bus, Daniel breaking the silence. “ So how did Martin treat her? “
“ I don't know, “ Branslav said. “ I was too busy playing to notice. “
“ Me too, “ Daniel said. “ You should ask her. “
Branslav shook his head as they got onto the bus, “ No. It might make me mad. “
“ What might make you mad Big Man? “ Martin's voice made them stop dead in their tracks.
Branslav frowned, “ Hello sir. “
“ I was hoping you two would get back before everyone else, “ Martin said. “ I need to talk to you about something Branslav. “
“ Why do you need to see me then? “ Daniel furrowed his brow.
“ Oh, “ Martin looked at him. “ I don't need to see you but you two are attached at the hip so I figured you'd be together. “
Daniel frowned, “ I'll wait outside then. “
Branslav stepped up a little more, “ What do you need to see me for? “
“ About that girl from the other night, “ Martin started.
“ Melissa yes, “ Branslav said.
“ Her name is Betty. Betty Roger-Skogan, “ Martin cut him off. “ You can stop pretending like you only know her pen name. “
Branslav nodded, “ Okay. What about Betty then? “
“ I don't think she should be invited to any more games. She seemed quite bored and uninterested. I found it rather insulting personally, “ Martin said.
“ I was busy playing so I really didn't notice, “ Branslav said. He hadn't even looked over at Betty when he was resting on the bench. He had been too interested in seeing how the game would play out. “ What are you getting at? “
“ I just want you to re-think getting involved with her. She doesn't seem interested in you or anything about you, “ Martin said.
Branslav frowned as he felt his anger rise. “ Don't meddle in my private affairs. You're my boss and that's it. I'll decide if Betty's interested in me or not. “
Martin arched an eyebrow at Branslav's tone, “ I see. Pardon me for being more mature and making an attempt to warn you. When she breaks your heart, I don't want it affecting your game. “
“ It won't affect my game, “ Branslav cut Martin off sharply.
Martin smirked, “ It had better not if you don't want to find yourself back in the Alps freezing your ass off. Now, if you'll excuse me. “
Branslav stepped aside, letting Martin off. Daniel got on the bus as soon as Martin was gone. He stopped when Branslav slammed his fist into one of the seats. “ What did he want? “ Daniel asked.
“ To fuck with my head, “ Branslav growled. “ He wants me to forget about Betty. “
“ Oh, “ Daniel said. “ What did you tell him? “
“ That it wasn't any of his business, “ Branslav said. “ Let's just go sit down. “

Robert pulled into a parking place and shut the car off. He picked up her copy of the DNA results, steeling himself to go inside. He checked his watch, frowning at the time. He wanted to be at the hospital in time to see Alex before he went into surgery but he hadn't quite made it.
Alex's surgery was to be at noon and his watch said it was twelve fifteen. He took some solace in the fact that Alex would not have to see him confront Pauline. He got out of the car and headed inside. He knew where the pediatric surgery wing was so he went to it.
When he reached it he went to the nurses station to let them know he had arrived and find out when Alex would be out of surgery. He got to the station and the nurse at the computer looked up at him. She was a chubby American Indian woman with slick black hair pulled back into a bun and wore plain green scrubs. “ Can I help you sir? “
“ Uh hi, “ Robert said. “ I'm Robert Hughes. Alex Hughes is having surgery today and I was wondering if you could tell me when he'll be out. “
The girl looked at a chart, “ He just went in. His mother is in the waiting room with another family member. “
“ Oh really now? “ Robert arched an eyebrow. The only family Pauline had was her mother and she was in Phoenix. “ Where is she? “
“ She's in the waiting room, “ The nurse pointed to an open door at the other end of the ward.
Robert nodded and walked towards the door. When he reached the waiting room, he stopped in the doorway. Pauline was there, sitting in a chair that faced away from the door. A man sat next to her but he figured it was someone else waiting on a child in surgery and the nurse had been mistaken.
Robert took a step into the room, steeling himself for what he knew would be a confrontation. He moved slowly, putting his hand in his jacket to get the envelope. He stopped cold when the man took Pauline's hand in his. The man turned to face her and Pauline turned to face him.
The man had thinning black hair, was kind of chubby and looked something akin to a frog. It was at that moment Robert recognized the man. He had been in the suspicious car the night Pauline had kicked Robert out. He ducked back, peeking around the door jamb then listened as they started to talk.
" You'd better go. My husband will probably be here any minute, " Pauline said quietly.
The man shook his head, " Okay. Call me when Alex gets out so I know if he's alright. "
" Sure, " Pauline said. The man leaned in, looking like he was going to kiss her but she stopped him. " Not here, Richard. "
" Okay then. I'll make up for it when I see you later. When does he leave town again? " Richard asked.
" He had a road trip in a few days. I'll call you when he leaves, " Pauline replied.
Robert felt like he was watching from somewhere else as he moved closer, walking in front of Pauline. It took everything he had not to slap her across the face as the depth of her betrayal crashed in on him. She looked at him defiantly but her expression changed when she saw he had his left hand in his jacket. He kept his expression cold as he pulled the envelope out.
When she didn't take it, he grabbed her right hand and shoved the envelope in it. He then walked out of the waiting room, his fists clenched at his sides as he tried to keep it together enough to make it to his car. Once there, he got inside and started crying as he beat the steering wheel and dash angrily.
He wasn't for certain how long he had cried when he finally slumped over the steering wheel, completely drained. He beat at the dash weakly a couple more times then decided to stop. His hands throbbed and he was pretty sure he had re-opened his wounds. He took ragged breaths before a tapping at his window startled him.
He looked up to find a security guard looking at him. He was a heavy set older man, probably about fifty-five or so. His uniform was steel gray with charcoal pocket flaps and he wore an ID card on his left breast pocket. He motioned with his hand for Robert to roll the window down.
Robert did as he was asked, “ Yes sir? “
“ Are you alright? “ The guard asked. “ I saw you when I was driving by in the truck. “
Robert looked and saw the white security truck parked just on the other side of the walkway. He frowned, “ I've been better. “
“ Oh, “ The guard nodded. “ Do you care to tell me what's wrong? “
Robert sighed, “ It's nothing. “
The guard squatted down next to the car, “ I don't mean to pry but did you lose someone? “
Robert thought about it. He wanted to tell the guard it was none of his business but the man seemed so genuinely concerned he decided to tell him just a little. “ Yeah. I did. My son. “
The guard looked shocked, “ Oh my goodness. I'm so sorry. How old was he? “
Robert shook his head, “ He just turned five in June. “
“ That's terrible. You're so young yourself. I can't imagine, “ The guard shook his head.
“ Don't. It's like going through Hell, “ Robert sniffled then looked at his hands. His bandages were bloodstained, verifying what he already knew.
“ Maybe you should talk to someone, “ The guard offered. “ Do you know where the hospital chapel is? “
Robert nodded, “ I passed it on the way in. “
“ Go see if the chaplain is there. It might help if you talk to him, “ The guard said.
Robert sighed, “ Maybe. “
The walkie-talkie on the man's belt crackled to life. Robert couldn't quite make it out but he figured it was a call for the guard because he sighed, “ That's me. I have to go. “
“ Thanks, “ Robert sighed.
“ You're welcome, “ The guard patted Robert on the shoulder. “ I hope things go better for you son. “
Robert watch as the guard got to his feet then walked back to the truck and drove away. He almost started the car to drive away but stopped. He wasn't particularly religious but he thought he'd give the chapel a shot. It would at least give him someone to talk to.
He got out of the car and walked back into the hospital, finding the chapel quickly. He walked in, letting his eyes adjust to the dimly lit room. There was a dozen pews, two rows of six, facing a large stained glass window of the Virgin Mary. He moved forward, “ Hello? “
He waited to see if anyone would answer then called again, “ Chaplain? “
He wandered around for a moment, finding he was all alone. “ Wonderful, “ He muttered as he sat down in the front most pew. He put his elbows on his knees and leaned forward, his thumbs going to his forehead as he clasped his hands in front of him. He did it not to pray but to think.
He felt so cold and alone, the feeling compounded by the fact the clergyman wasn't there. He wondered if there was anyone he could talk to as he looked up at the Holy Virgin. He sighed, getting out his cell phone as he remembered he did have someone to talk to. He wasn't sure if she had her phone back but he crossed his fingers, hoping she did.
**
Betty sat her computer in her living room as she worked on a new story. She was having trouble writing a scene though so she decided to take a break. She had tried to keep herself busy as she waited for Robert to call. She was anxious to see how things had gone with him since it was the day he would deliver the test results to Pauline.
She was just about to get up from the computer when her cell phone rang. She picked it up, finding it was the call she was waiting for. She flipped the phone open, “ Robert? “
“ Wow. Did I startle you or something? “ Robert asked. He sounded like he was surprised by Betty's tone when she answered the phone.
“ Oh. Um no. I've just been waiting for you to call all day, “ Betty said. It was the truth. She didn't want to be involved in anything too heavy so she could give him her full attention when he did call.
“ That's so sweet of you, “ Robert used his sweetest tone. “ You don't know how much that means to me right now. “
Betty wound a lock of hair around her fingers, his tone making her want to melt on the spot. His voice sounded so nice on the phone it made her want to crawl through it into his lap, “ I've been worried about you. Considering what you were going to do today and all. “
“ Yeah, “ Robert sighed. “ I like the way you sound right now. It makes me feel so much better. “
“ So how did it go? “ Betty asked, trying to keep her timbre the same.
Robert shut his eyes, “ It went even worse that I thought. “
“ Do you want to talk about it? “ Betty sat back down. “ I'll listen. “
“ I don't know if I can, “ Robert's tone became sad. “ I might start crying again and I don't want to use up your minutes. “
“ I have an unlimited plan, “ Betty said gently. “ Take all the time you need to then. Tell me everything. Start with what you did today and we'll work up to it. “
“ Okay then, “ Robert said. He took deep breath, “ I got the test results and after I got done there, I came to the hospital. “
“ Did you get to see Alex before he went into surgery? “ Betty asked.
“ No, I got here fifteen minutes after he went in. When I asked the nurse about him, they told me Pauline was in the waiting room, “ Robert stopped. A hard lump in his throat had risen suddenly and he tried to force it back down.
“ Robert? “ Betty asked after a long pause. “ Are you still there? “
Robert sobbed then hit the pew he was sitting on, “ Damn it. Why didn't I see it sooner? “
“ See what? What's going on? “ Betty got very concerned. “ Robert? “
Robert sniffled then started bawling. “ I should have known, “ He said over and over again.
Betty listened as he sobbed and cried. She really couldn't make out a lot of what he was saying but she managed to get the gist of the sobbing rant. He berated himself for being stupid and not realizing Pauline was the one cheating on him. He sobbed he should have know when she started accusing him when he had done nothing.
“ That's right. Let it out, “ Betty said when he quited down a bit. She wished she was there to hold him and tell him it would be alright. “ Tell me how you found out though. How did you find out she was cheating on you? “
“ He's here with her now, “ Robert sobbed. “ I saw her kissing him right as I walked into the waiting room to see her. “
“ Oh my God, “ Betty put her hand over her mouth. She moved her hand, “ Didn't she think you were coming? “
“ Probably when I didn't show up at ten, “ Robert sniffled. “ What's worse is I've seen the guy before. “
“ Really? “ Betty asked. “ When? Where? “
“ The night I got kicked out, there was a strange car parked at the curb. I thought it was just some drunk sleeping it off, “ Robert sobbed hard.
“ Was he the one in the car? “ Betty said.
“ Yes, “ Robert sobbed. “ I remember him from the description I gave to the police that night. “
“ Oh goodness, “ Betty gasped. “ I'm so sorry. Where are you now? “
Robert sniffled, “ The hospital chapel. “
“ Oh, “ Betty thought that was a good spot for him. “ Are you going to talk to the chaplain? “
“ I was but he's not here, “ Robert sniffled again. He sounded like he was starting to settle down a bit. “ I think I'm going to go grab something to eat then go back to Jakob's. “
“ What are you going to do there? “ Betty asked.
“ I don't know. Probably lay in bed and think about how much my life sucks, “ Robert muttered. “ I'll change my bandages too I guess. I got so pissed, I had a fit and reopened my wounds. “
“ I wish, “ Betty started then stopped. She almost said she wished she could have been there for him but she didn't want to scare him.
“ You wish what? “ Robert replied. He wondered what she had tried to say.
Betty bit her lip then sighed, “ There was something I could do for you. “
Robert sighed, “ I know baby but you're so far away. Listening is the best thing you can do for me right now. “
“ Okay then, “ Betty said.
“ I'll just have to see you when I get back around that way a week from Saturday, “ Robert said. He smiled a little, “ Then you can be around me and make me feel better. “
Betty looked over at the calendar on her wall. Her next signing tour was highlighted in pink, the day Robert spoke of included in the shaded area. “ About that, “ Betty said quietly.
“ Don't tell me, “ Robert sighed. He remembered hearing the message about the signing tour.
“ Okay I won't, “ Betty said.
“ So when do you get back from your road trip? “ Robert said.
Betty looked at the calendar again, “ The Monday after you leave. “
“ Oh, “ Robert sighed.
“ You could always call me though, “ Betty offered. “ You know you can any time you need to talk. “
“ That's sweet, “ Robert said. “ I'll keep tabs on you, okay? “
“ Okay, “ Betty said.
They were quiet for a long moment then Robert sighed, “ I'm tired of talking about me. I never did ask you how Martin treated you the other night. Do I even want to know? "
Betty sighed, " He was paying too much attention to the game to care about me. He did insult my books a couple of times and treated me like pond scum when he did talk to me. I just bit my tongue and toughed it out. I was glad when you came to get me. He practically drug me to the locker room after the game. "
" Like right after the game while the guys were changing? " Robert asked.
" Yeah, " Betty said. " When I told him I didn't want to be in there, he said that someone like me shouldn't be bothered by a few naked men. Branslav stepped up though and told him to let me stay outside. He said he'd come get me after everyone was dressed. "
" Good for him, " Robert said.
" Martin went in and I think he had a fight with him over it, " Betty said. " And that's about when you came up. "
" Ah, " Robert said. " How did things go with Branslav after you left me? "
“ Oh. That, “ Betty said. She was surprised that he asked. She didn't think he'd be curious. " Do you really want to know?
Robert hissed, “ I don't like the way that sounded. “
“ It was awful, “ Betty muttered. “ He took me to this place and it was a nightmare. There was a pimp and his hookers there and the food was awful. “
“ Oh no. No. No, “ Robert knew exactly where she was talking about. “ Don't tell me he took you to Lucky's. “
“ Yeah. He did, “ Betty said.
“ Oh God. I hope you didn't eat the chicken, “ Robert said.
“ I didn't. Branslav told me not to, “ Betty replied.
“ The only time I went, we ate the chicken and we both had to have our stomachs pumped, “ Robert said.
“ Ewwwww, “ Betty scrunched up her face. “ Gross. “
“ Yes. Very, “ Robert said. “ Food poisoning is. I'm still not too sure if it was the chicken though. That place is so filthy, it could have been anything. “
“ Why does Branslav still eat there? “ Betty was surprised. She didn't go any where again if it made her the least bit sick or was dirty.
“ He said the steak is good so he doesn't hold the chicken incident against them. He's crazy I guess, “ Robert sighed. “ I thought I had broke him of going to that place though. After we were so sick, I told him I would kill him if he tried to take me again. “
“ I don't blame you. That place is awful, " Betty said.
“ So how did it go otherwise? “ Robert asked. " How was his dinner conversation? "
Betty rolled her eyes, “ It was awful. He kept talking about the things we talked about at dinner the night before and it was sort of annoying. It was like listening to a broken record. “
“ He can get like that when he's a little nervous. You need to change the subject or tell him to shut up, “ Robert said.
“ Oh, “ Betty said. She wasn't one to tell someone to shut up but to endure whatever situation she was in.
“ Did anything else happen? “ Robert said.
Betty sighed, “ He took me home after that. I was so tired, I fell asleep in the car. “
“ You were pretty tired when I saw you so I can understand that, “ Robert remembered how tired she had looked on the bus. “ What else? “
Betty thought about it then decided not to tell Robert the rest. She didn't want to make him angry. “ That was it. He walked me to my door and we said goodnight. “
“ Oh. Okay, “ Robert said. “ Hey. “
“ Huh? “ Betty replied.
“ I got to get out of here. Someone just came into pray. I'll call you later, okay? “:
“ Sure, “ Betty said. “ I'll talk to you later then. “
**
“ Later, “ Robert said then hung up. He watched the person that had come in walk up to the altar before standing up to leave. He didn't know where he was going but he knew he didn't want to stay in the hospital. He went out to his car and got in, wondering what to do next.
He got out his wallet to see if he had enough money to get some gas. As he counted the bills, he came across the card Mr. Shaver had given him. He pulled it out and looked at it, deciding to call the lawyer.
He got his cell phone out, dialing the number on it. The phone rang several times and he was about to hang up when a woman finally answered. “ The offices of Nicholas Reiss. How may I direct your call? “
“ I don't know. Maybe you can help me. I need an appointment to see Mr. Reiss as soon as possible, “ Robert said.
“ We do take walk-ins for a free consultation. How soon can you be here? “ The woman replied.
Robert looked at the address on the card, “ Hang on. Let me run it through my GPS. “
“ I'll wait, “ The woman said.
Robert typed the address in, the screen giving him an estimated arrival time. “ I can be there in twenty minutes, “ He told the woman.
“ Excellent, “ The woman said. “ Can I have your name please? “
“ Robert Hughes, “ Robert said.
“ Thank you Mr. Hughes, “ The woman said. “ We'll see you in twenty minutes. We are located on the fifth floor. “
“ Yeah, “ Robert said. “ I see that on the card. “
“ Excellent then, “ The woman said. “ We'll be expecting you. “
“ Thanks, “ Robert said. “ Bye. “
“ Bye, “ The woman replied and hung up.
Robert snapped his phone closed, throwing it into the seat. He started the car and headed for the address.

**
