Branslav sat on the stairs, staring at the front door. He had the window next to the door open and the curtain pulled back so he could see the driveway. He looked at his watch again, finding it was a quarter until one. Betty had said she'd be at his house at eleven but still hadn't shown up.
He glanced at the roses he had bought her next to him, deciding to put the flowers in some water so they wouldn't wilt. He picked them up and headed into the kitchen. The closest thing he had to a vase was a cup for a gas station. He filled it with water then stuck the roses in it before propping them against a cabinet so they wouldn't fall over.
He then went to the fridge, getting a bottle of water. He looked at the rather expensive bottle of wine he had gotten to go with dinner. Though he knew Betty didn't drink, he figured he could convince her to have one glass with him. He felt it lent an air of romance to the occasion and hoped she'd see it the same way.
He had also gotten a case of diet soda on the way home from the game. He had heard Betty mention she drank the stuff but wasn't for sure what kind. He guessed and hoped he had gotten the right brand. He didn't care for the stuff but it would give her something to drink if she didn't want to drink the wine.
He went back to the stairs, wondering what to do. He still hadn't got her phone number so he couldn't call her. Even when he had arranged their ill-fated first meeting, he hadn't used it. They had made all the plans online because she said she had dropped her cell phone and it was being repaired.
He opened the water and took a drink, remembering he had written her address down so he could give it to the pick-up service. He went into the living room, going to where he had left his wallet. He emptied it, finding the paper the address was on was still there. He got on the Internet and went to the phone directory to do reverse look-up.
He typed in the address, frowning when there were no results. “ She must be unlisted, “ He muttered to himself. He ran a hand through his hair, deciding his next move. Calling information would do him no good since Betty's number was unlisted so that option was out.
He sighed, deciding to just go to her house and see if she was there. He scribbled out a note to put on the door in case she was just really late. He put his phone number on it and went to the front door after getting a bit of tape. He taped the note to the door then shut the window.
He grabbed his jacket and headed out the back door to the SUV...

Robert lay on the hide-a-bed, staring at the ceiling. He had been for at least three hours. The team had gotten back to Taos at seven thirty am., Coach Hooker telling everyone to rest up for practice the next day. Robert and Jakob had gotten back to the apartment at about eight but Robert had only been able to sleep for two hours before waking up again.
He had so much on his mind, he couldn't rest. He hadn't slept on the bus either with everything that was bothering him. He wondered just how long Pauline would fight the truth and how long she'd keep him tied up in court. That wasn't the only thing bothering him though.
He looked at the clock on the DVD player again, finding it was nearly one o'clock. He got his cell phone, hoping he could catch Betty before she went to teach Branslav how to cook. He had no idea what time she would be going to his place though. He flipped it open and dialed her number, waiting as the phone rang.
He frowned when it went to her voice mail. It was strange for her not to answer on the second ring when he called. He hung up and tried again with the same result. ~She must already be over there and have her phone off, ~ He thought as he snapped the phone closed.
“ Oh you're awake, “ Jakob's voice startled him.
“ Jesus Christ. How long have you been standing there? “ Robert rose up just enough to see Jakob standing just outside of the kitchen. He was wearing a pair of green plaid boxers and nothing else.
“ I just walked out of my room. Settle down, “ Jakob said. “ I just couldn't sleep any more. I slept on the bus so I didn't need that much sleep here. “
“ Oh, “ Robert said. “ I didn't get much sleep at all. “
“ Dude, “ Jakob said. “ You've been tripping since we went to Reno. What's wrong? “
Robert sighed and shut his eyes. He still hadn't told Jakob everything that had been going on and decided it was time to come clean. He looked at Jakob again, “ You know how I said it would be an extended stay when I came in with the suitcases? “
“ Yeah, “ Jakob said. " I figured she's on one of her tears and you're here laying low again. "
Robert rolled over onto his stomach so he could look at Jakob better. He thought for a moment then said, “ Well it's worse than that. I'm divorcing Pauline. That's why I said I was getting a place of my own. “
“ No shit? “ Jakob said. He looked like he couldn't get his head around Robert's admission.
“ No shit, “ Robert replied. He narrowed his eyes, “ Don't tell the other guys though. “
“ I won't, “ Jakob put his hands up. “ So, is it over that thing that happened the other night? “
Robert shook his head, “ No. She's cheating on me. “
“ Holy shit, “ Jakob looked shocked. “ How long? “
Robert shook his head, “ I don't know. All I know is I haven't had sex with her for two years. I guess she's been cheating for that long or a little longer. “
“ Wow. Sorry man, “ Jakob looked sympathetic. “ I don't know what to say. “
“ It's okay. I don't expect you to say anything, “ Robert shook his head. “ I just have to get a place to live now. “
Jakob stood there for a moment looking at the floor then snapped his head up, “ Why don't you go see the landlady? Maybe there's an empty apartment here and you can move into another unit. “
“ That sounds like an idea, “ Robert nodded. He hadn't thought about that but it seemed sensible. “ I'll go do it now. “
“ I'll fix some breakfast so you can have something to eat before you go, “ Jakob walked into the kitchen.
Robert sat up and waved his hand, “ No. I'm not hungry right now. “
“ You need to eat. I didn't see you touch a bite yesterday, “ Jakob pointed out. He frowned, " I haven't seen you eating with the team come to think of it. "
“ I ate a bar on the bus, “ Robert knew Jakob was right. He was making himself eat protein bars even though his appetite hadn't returned. He hadn't been hungry since he found out the truth about Pauline.
“ When was the last time you really had a meal though? “ Jakob asked.
“ Monday, “ Robert muttered.
“ It's Saturday, “ Jakob pointed out.
“ I know, “ Robert said. “ I'm just not hungry. “
Jakob tried to look threatening, “ I'll tell Coach Hooker. “
“ You'll tell him what? “ Robert said as he got up and went to where he had put his suitcases in the corner of the living room. He grabbed one and unzipped it, looking at the contents.
“ That you're not eating, “ Jakob said.
Robert grabbed a pair of jeans, a heather gray Henley and his soccer sandals. “ He knows I'm not. He's the one that told me to eat the protein bars until my appetite came back. He knows what's going on. “
“ Oh, “ Jakob said. “ Fine then. I'll make extra in case you change your mind then. “
“ Do whatever, “ Robert said as he stepped into his pants and pulled them up. He pulled on his shirt after zipping his fly then stepped into his sandals. He grabbed up his cell phone and wallet, “ I'll be back when I get back. “
“ Okay, “ Jakob called as Robert headed to the front door.

Branslav sat in the SUV, his eyes fixed on Betty's car. It was still in her driveway. He was at a loss, not knowing what to think. ~Did she stand me up? ~ The thought finally came.
He pulled in behind her car and shut off the engine. He got out, looking towards the house. He went to the car and put his hand on the hood, finding it cool to the touch like it hadn't been on at all. He looked towards the house again, his bewilderment growing.
He needed to know why she hadn't shown up, hoping she wouldn't be too upset when she answered the door to find him there. He strode up the path, knocking on the screen door as soon as he reached it. There was nothing but silence as he waited for Betty to answer. He knocked again but harder.
There was still no answer so he opened the screen and knocked on the inner door. He growled, getting annoyed that she wasn't coming to the door. He reached for the knob, finding the door was unlocked when he turned it. He pushed the door open and stuck his head inside, “ Betty? “ He called.
He waited a few moments then called her again. He stepped inside slowly, puzzled that she couldn't hear him in the small house. He went to the living room, finding her cell phone by her computer. The screen flashed the she had missed two calls.
He thought it was odd she would let her phone go unanswered. He glanced around the house, trying to find any sign of her. He took a step back to glance towards the kitchen to see if she were there, his blood running cold at what he saw. He could barely breathe as the scene before him sank in.
Betty was laying on the floor on her right side, her back facing the living room. Branslav ran towards her, going to his knees when he reached the kitchen. He leaned over her, not touching her for fear he would hurt her more if he did. Her hair had fallen to cover her face so he carefully pulled it back to find blood covering her face.
He looked closely, finding a split place just at her hairline. From that, he ascertained she had hit her head. He rose to his feet, turning to head into the hall where he had seen her land line phone. He picked it up, dialing 9-1-1.
“ Reno nine one-one. What's you emergency? “ The operator asked.
Branslav took a breath to steady his nerves, “ Yes. I am at a friend's house. She was supposed to come to my house but she didn't so I came to check on her. She's hurt. “
“ How is she hurt sir? “ The operator asked.
“ I think she hit her head, “ Branslav explained. “ There's blood on her face and it looks like the wound is at her hairline. “
“ Is she conscious? “ The operator sounded like she was typing.
“ No. She's not, “ Branslav said. " She was out when I came in. "
“ Is she breathing? “ The operator continued to type.
Branslav walked over to Betty and put his hand in front of her nose. He was relieved to feel her breath on his fingers. “ Yes. “
“ How is her pulse? “ The operator asked.
Branslav put his fingers to her throat, finding she had a good pulse. “ It's normal. “
“ What is her age? “ The operator asked.
Branslav opened his mouth to speak then stopped. “ I don't know. I haven't known her long enough to know that. “
“ Give me range then, “ The operator replied.
Branslav looked at Betty and didn't think she could be that much older than him. “ Middle twenties I guess. “
“ Does she have any preexisting medical conditions? “ The operator inquired.
Branslav growled, “ I don't know. We just barely met. “
“ I have to ask these questions sir, “ The operator sounded stern.
“ I'm sorry. I'm just worried, “ Branslav apologized.
“ You need to stay calm sir. I'll send some paramedics. Please don't try to move her, “ The operator said.
“ Do you know the address? “ Branslav asked. He looked around to see if he could find a bill or a letter that had the address on it. He had left the address in the car and didn't quite remember it on his own.
“ No sir, “ The operator said. " Could you please give it to me? "
Branslav found an envelope with the address and took a deep breath as he tried to calm himself enough to read it to the operator. " Did you get that? " He asked when he finished.
The operator read it back to him, " Is that correct sir? "
" Yes, " Branslav nodded.
" I'm sending the paramedics right now, " The operator said.
“ Okay, “ Branslav said. “ Tell them to hurry. I don't know how long she's been like this. “
“ They will get there as soon as they can sir, “ The operator said.
“ Thank you, “ Branslav said. “ I'm hanging up now. “
“ Yes sir, “ The operator said. “ I'm going to call you back to verify the call. “
“ I'll be here right here, “ Branslav said then hung up. He waited and the phone rang, “ Hello? “
“ Thank you sir, “ The operator said. “ EMS is on the way. “
“ Thanks, “ Branslav said and hung up after the operator hung up. He looked at Betty again, hoping she wasn't hurt too badly. He watched her until he heard the sound of sirens coming, going outside to the drive so he could flag down the ambulance.

Robert was walking back to Jakob's apartment. He had lucked out, the complex having one available apartment and it was furnished. He put down the money for the deposit and the landlady had given him his key. He planned to move what he could in to the apartment then make a list of the things he needed.
He got out his cell phone to check the time, wondering if he was safe to call Betty and tell her the good news about getting his own apartment. It was two-thirty but he still wasn't sure if it'd be alright to call. He decided to wait until Sunday, not wanting to interrupt in case things were going well or make Branslav mad because she was talking to him again. He reached Jakob's apartment to find two police officers waiting at the door.
“ Can I help you officers? “ Robert asked.
“ Yes, “ One of them said. He was about thirty-five, as tall as Robert and much more muscular. He looked like someone no one would want to piss off. “ We're looking for Robert Hughes. “
Robert furrowed his brow, “ That would be me. What's wrong? “
“ Put your hands against the wall, “ The other cop said. He was a little shorter than Robert and about his build. He had short blonde hair and light blue eyes.
“ Why? “ Robert was confused.
“ Just do it, “ The bigger cop said forcefully.
“ Okay, “ Robert put his hands on the wall. He looked over his shoulder at the cops . “ What did I do? “
The smaller cop kicked his legs a little further apart then started to frisk him. The bigger cop got out a laminated card, “ You are under arrest for breaking and entering. You have the right to remain silent. If you choose to give up that right, anything you say can and will be used against you in court of law. You have to speak to an attorney and have them present at any questioning. If you cannot afford an attorney, the court will provide one for you. Do you understand? “
“ Yes, “ Robert said. “ But where did I break into? I've been out of town since Wednesday. “
“ That will be explained to you when you get to the police station, “ The bigger cop said. The smaller cop then grabbed Robert's arms, putting them behind his back before handcuffing him.
The door to Jakob's apartment opened and he stood there, confused by the scene before him. He blinked, “ What's going on? “
“ I don't know. Call Coach Hooker and tell him I got arrested. I'll deal with the rest and try to be out for practice on Monday, “ Robert called over his shoulder as the cops escorted him away.
“ Uh. Okay, “ Jakob said. He watched as the cops took Robert out to the parking lot and put him in a police cruiser.

Branslav paced the room nervously. Betty was still out. The doctor had checked her but wouldn't tell Branslav anything since he wasn't related to her. All he could do was wait for her to come around.
They had made him wait in the waiting room until they had her changed into a hospital gown then called him back after what seemed like an eternity. He found they had also stitched up her wound while he was waiting. It looked a little better since they had cleaned it but a dark bruise had developed around it. He was going to sit down in a chair across the room from the gurney when Betty groaned.
He ran to the gurney and leaned over her, “ Betty? “
“ Yeah? “ She whispered. Her voice was thin and raspy. She opened her eyes slowly, squinting at the bright lights. “ Branslav? “
“ Yeah, “ He said. “ Let me go get the doctor. “
Branslav walked out into the hall and looked around for the doctor. He spotted the short pudgy man at the nurses station and walked over to him. The doctor looked up at him, “ Can I help you? “
“ Betty is awake, “ Branslav pointed to the room he had just come from.
“ Miss Rogers-Skogan you mean? “ The doctor arched one of his snow white eyebrows. He was completely white-headed and looked like a generic grandfather type.
“ Yes, “ Branslav nodded.
“ I'll be in there in a minute. Don't let her go back to sleep, “ The doctor said.
“ Right, “ Branslav said then headed back into Betty's room. He leaned over the gurney and took Betty's left hand in both of his hands. “ Betty? “
“ Yes? “ She whispered.
“ The doctor will be in here in a minute. Stay with me, okay? “ Branslav said.
“ I'll try, “ Betty whispered. “ What happened? “
Branslav sighed, “ I don't know. I came to see why you were so late and I found you. “
“ Wait. You came to my house? “ Betty sounded confused. “ Why? “
Branslav decided not to tell her that he thought she had ditched him for fear it would hurt her feelings. “ You were so late I got worried. I didn't have your number to call so I did the only thing I could. “
“ Oh. I guess I should thank you, “ Betty sighed. “ Damn my head hurts. My left ankle does too. “
“ You hit your head, “ Branslav said. “ You have fifteen stitches but I don't know about your ankle. They won't tell me anything. Do you know what happened? “
Betty was quiet for a long moment then shook her head slowly, “ No. “
“ Oh, “ Branslav said. “ The police asked me some questions but I didn't know anything. “
“ The police? “ Betty sounded puzzled. " Why were there police? "
“ They came with the ambulance. I guess it was because I came in and found you, “ Branslav explained. " I guess they wanted to make sure there wasn't a crime. "
“ Oh, “ Betty whispered. “ What time is it? “
“ Three fifteen, “ Branslav said. “ You've been out for a couple of hours. “
Betty tried to think, “ No. I've been out longer. “
“ I found you at one-thirty though, “ Branslav said.
Betty shook her head slowly, “ I went up to the attic at ten forty-five. “
“ Oh, “ Branslav said. He recalled the blood on Betty's face had looked like it had time to dry.
“ Miss Rogers-Skogan? “ The doctor had come to the door without Branslav noticing.
Betty tried to look around Branslav, “ Who's that? “
“ The doctor, “ Branslav said.
“ Could I ask you to step out into the hall Mr. Korbel? “ The doctor said as he came into the room. “ I need to check Miss Rogers-Skogan. “
“ He can stay, “ Betty whispered. “ I'm not done talking to him. “
The doctor walked into the room, “ Could you move aside at least? “
Branslav nodded, “ Oh. Yeah. “
Once Branslav had moved, the doctor moved to Betty's left side. “ Do you know what happened, Miss Rogers-Skogan? “ He asked her.
“ Not personally no but Branslav said it looked like I fell. I don't remember falling though, “ Betty said.
“ Tell me what you do remember, “ The doctor got out a penlight.
“ I went up to the attic to get some dishes because I was going over to his house and I turned to go back downstairs and that's it, “ Betty said.
“ Okay, “ The doctor nodded. “ Let me check your eyes. “
“ Okay, “ Betty said. She grimaced when the doctor shined the light in her eyes.
The doctor looked for a long time then nodded, “ I believe you have a concussion. “
“ That explains why my head hurts so bad, “ Betty said after she shut her eyes.
“ Your ankle is also very swollen and bruised and I would like to have that checked to make sure it isn't anything torn or broken, “ The doctor walked to the foot of the gurney, lifting the blanket to look at the ankle again. “ As bad as it looks, there may be some damage to it. “
“ Do what you need to do, “ Betty said.
Branslav grimaced when he saw Betty's ankle. It was very swollen and bruised indeed. He knew she'd be on crutches if not in a cast. “ Ouch, “ He muttered.
“ I would like for you to have an MRI for your head and X-Rays for the ankle, “ The doctor walked to the door. “ I'll have a nurse come in with the forms in a few minutes and I'll have them call the orders down to Radiology. “
“ Okay, “ Betty said.
The doctor left and Branslav went back to Betty's side. He took her hand in his again, “ Is there anything I can do for you? Is there anyone from your family you want me to call? “
“ There's no one to call, “ Betty said. “ I don't have a family. “
“ What? “ Branslav was surprised. “ I know you said your mom had passed away but what about your father? “
“ He died when I was fourteen. I wouldn't want him here even if he were still alive anyway, “ Betty had a hint of disdain in her voice.
“ Oh, “ Branslav said. “ Sorry. I didn't know. “
“ I know you didn't, “ Betty said.
There was a knock at the door, “ Miss Rogers-Skogan? “ It was a female nurse.
“ Yes? “ Betty said.
“ I need you to sign these papers so we can get your MRI and your X-rays done, “ The nurse said.
Branslav turned to face the nurse. It was a pudgy older woman, her graying blonde hair pulled back in a tight bun and he thought she looked kind of like a pig. She wore a scrub top with teddy bears printed on it and plain blue scrub pants. She eyed Branslav, “ Are you her husband? “
“ No! “ Branslav and Betty said at the same time.
The woman looked puzzled by their combined reaction then arched an eyebrow, " Then what is he? "
“ He's a friend, “ Betty said.
“ Then he needs to go out in the hallway, “ The nurse stepped aside from the door. " I have to ask you some personal questions. "
Branslav waited for Betty to say he could stay but she didn't. He let go of her hand, retreating to the hall. The nurse shut the door but he could hear her as she started questioning Betty.
“ I just have a few questions, “ The nurse said.
“ Okay, “ Betty replied.
“ You are twenty-nine, correct? “ The nurse asked.
“ Yes, “ Betty replied.
“ Are you taking birth control? “ The nurse asked.
“ No, “ Betty replied.
The nurse then asked, “ When was the date of your last period? “
“ Three weeks ago, “ Betty answered.
“ When did you last engage in any sexual activity? “ The nurse asked.
Branslav moved closer to the door, curious to hear Betty's answer. He had been suspicious that something had happened between Betty and Robert. He thought he picked up on it because of how weird they had been acting at lunch. He was certain they had done something by the way Robert had stayed so close to her.
“ Never, “ Betty replied. “ I'm a virgin. “
“ Never ever? “ The nurse sounded like she didn't believe Betty.
“ Not even heavy petting if you must know, “ Betty said.
The nurse sighed, “ Okay. I'll help you sign the papers. “
Branslav moved away from the door slowly, Betty's admission sending his mind reeling. He had no clue that she was five years older than him. The major thing though was that she was a virgin. It became all too clear why she had acted the way she had towards him.
~She doesn't know how to react, ~ Branslav thought. ~No wonder I scared her. ~
The nurse opened the door. “ Radiology will be up in a bit to get you, “ She told Betty then walked back to the nurses' station.
Branslav walked back into the room, putting his hands in his back pockets. He couldn't quite look at Betty, ashamed he had eavesdropped. “ Uh hi. “
“ Hey, “ Betty said after she turned her face to him.
“ So, “ He said. “ Do you want me to go down to Radiology with you? “
“ If they let you, “ Betty sighed.
Branslav nodded, “ Yeah. I'll ask. “
**
“ So let me get this straight, “ Coach Hooker was standing outside the holding cell the police had put Robert in. “ You're here because you went into your own house? “
Robert nodded, “ Yes. They told me Pauline filed breaking and entering charges on me because I went into the house to get my things. “
“ I see, “ Coach Hooker nodded. “ Did you explain to them it was your house? “
“ Yeah and they're checking it out right now, “ Robert said. “ They said if they can verify it's my home, they'll let me go and Pauline will get in trouble for filing a false report. I think she filed it on me because those burglars got away before the cops got there. “
“ I can't believe you let those guys in, “ Coach Hooker shook his head. Robert had told him about the incident while they were in Flagstaff.
“ Hey, “ Robert said. “ I told you at the time I thought it made sense. I figured she was just being usual herself. They even had me fooled. “
“ Yeah true, “ Coach Hooker said. " Having the locks changed sounds like something she'd do. "
“ I think she was even more pissed because I got my stuff out before they came, “ Robert said. He laughed, “ I bet she was looking forward to me losing my things too. “
Coach Hooker nodded, " Yeah. Can I ask you something personal? "
Robert shrugged, " Sure. "
“ About the house, isn't your name is on the title to it? “ Coach Hooker asked.
“ Yes, “ Robert said. “ In fact, Pauline's isn't. I'll get the insurance money for the stuff those fake locksmiths stole the other day. Of course she doesn't know that otherwise she wouldn't have filed the claim. She told me she did when she called me back to bitch me out when she found out the burglars got away. “
“ Why don't you just kick her out then and keep your house if your name is the only one on the title? “ Coach Hooker sounded puzzled.
Robert sighed, “ I can't do that. I don't care if she's in the street but I can't do that to Alex. “
Coach Hooker nodded, “ I understand now. It's about the boy. "
“ I may not be his father but I'm still the only dad he's ever known, “ Robert said. " I couldn't do that to him. "
A female police officer came in. She was a petite blonde, “ You're free to go Hughes. We just got a fax from the Department Of Records and your story pans out. There's no way you could have broke into your own house. “
“ I told you, “ Robert said as she opened the cell door.
“ I know you did, “ The cop said. “ Your wife is going to be charged with filing a false police report. “
“ Great, “ Robert said as he walked out of the cell. “ Where are my things? “
“ I have them over here, “ The cop said. She led him to the desk. “ You just need to sign these papers saying you got everything you came in with and you'll be free to go. “
Robert looked at the plastic bag the cop held up. “ Phone, wallet and apartment key. Yeah, that's it, “ He said as he signed the papers.
After the cop handed him his stuff, Coach Hooker patted him on the shoulder, “ Come on. I'll give you a ride back to Jakob's. “
“ Sure, “ Robert said. “ Thanks. “
“ No problem, “ Coach Hooker said.
