Robert woke with a start, his hand hitting his chest. He opened his eyes to find Branslav staring down at him. “ Do you have to wake me up the same way every time? “
“ Yes, “ Branslav said.
“ What time is it? “ Robert glanced around. He frowned when he saw the only clock in the room was blinking 4 p.m., “ When are you going to set the clock on your DVD player? “
“ When I learn how to, “ Branslav said. “ It's eight. “
“ What time is practice? “ Robert arched an eyebrow. He knew Coach Sweet was fond of early practices.
“ Nine, “ Branslav said.
“ Then why are you waking me up now? “ Robert shut his eyes. “ You could have let me sleep another thirty minutes. “
Branslav growled, “ To tell you I fed Betty and gave her some pain pills. You need to wake her up again at eleven if she falls asleep. “
“ Okay, “ Robert said. “ I think I can do that. What did you feed her? “
“ I gave her some of those microwave sausage biscuits, “ Branslav said.
Robert sighed, “ Oh yummy. Gourmet dining at his pinnacle. “
“ Shut up, “ Branslav said. “ It's what I had that was quick. “
“ So, “ Robert said. “ When are you leaving for practice? “
“ As soon as I'm sure you're awake, “ Branslav said sharply. “ I want you to be awake in case Betty needs anything between now and the next time you have to check on her. “
Robert growled and sat up, “ Fine. I'll get up. “
“ Thank you, “ Branslav said. “ I know she has your number so she might call you when she needs something. That's the set up we've got going on. “
“ Okay, “ Robert said. He ran his hand through his hair to smooth it down. It was getting long enough that it was quite messy first thing in the morning. He also seriously thought about taking a shower since he hadn't had one since leaving Flagstaff.
“ I don't know how long practice is going to last, “ Branslav was still behind the couch though Robert faced the other way. “ I'll call you when I leave though. “
“ Do you want me to drop you off at practice? “ Robert asked. “ I know you're not going to leave me here alone without a vehicle and I can get back here before Betty wakes up again. “
“ The sports car is in the garage, “ Branslav said. “ You won't be here without a vehicle. “
“ That tiny thing? “ Robert said. “ I've been in go-karts bigger than that thing and it's a standard. “
“ Take it or leave it, “ Branslav said. “ I know you can drive a standard. “
Robert growled, “ I haven't done it in a couple of years though. “
“ It'll come back to you, “ Branslav said.
“ Yeah. Maybe. Have you been starting it to keep it running? “ Robert asked.
Branslav frowned, “ It runs fine. “
“ It had better. I don't want to have an emergency and be stuck with a car that doesn't start, “ Robert said. He could already see it n his mind. There would be a problem and he'd be stuck with no way to solve it.
“ It starts, “ Branslav snapped. “ The key for it is on the rack in the hall. “
Robert waved his hand, “ Okay. Sure. Fine. “
“ I need to get going, “ Branslav said. " I want to catch Daniel before practice. "
Robert turned around to look at Branslav. He was wearing a blue and white jogging suit and his hair looked freshly washed and dried. Robert put on the most serious look he could muster, “ I want to ask you something about this practice. “
“ I haven't got time, “ Branslav looked like he was dying to leave.
“ Yes you do, “ Robert said. “ I want to know why you're acting like this is the most important practice of your life? “
“ It isn't, “ Branslav lied. “ It just... everything that's going on right now. It all happened at once and I'm trying to handle it all. Your life's a mess too so I don't think it's fair to ask you for any help with my problems. “
Robert arched an eyebrow, “ My life is a mess but helping you out a little isn't going to screw it up any more. Just calm down and try not to worry about Betty. I'm here and I know what I'm doing. Do you want my advice? “
“ I have a feeling you're going to give it to me if I want it or not, “ Branslav said.
Robert frowned, “ Alright. You be a fucking prick. I'm older than you and more mature but don't listen to me. “
“ You're a little over a year older than me, “ Branslav pointed out. “ You can't be that much more mature. “
“ I've been married and raised a kid. That made me have to grow up a lot, “ Robert countered as he rose to his feet. “ I also see me when I left in you right now. “
Branslav thought about it and Robert was right. He had been very agitated and stressed out before his trade came through. Most of it being the result of the constant harassment Pauline and Martin had bestowed upon him as well as Alex's bout with pneumonia he was dealing with at the time.
Branslav sighed, “ I don't think you can compare me with you back then. I don't have a wife making my life Hell and I'm not caring for a sick kid. “
“ No but I know how Martin likes to screw with your head just like he used to screw with mine, “ Robert said. “ No one can tolerate that shit for very long. The man is a mental terrorist and you're his latest victim. “
Branslav frowned deeply, Robert's comment stinging a bit because it was true. He looked at his watch, “ Could you get to your point? “
Robert quirked his mouth, “ I've hit a nerve haven't I? “
“ No. You're just running your mouth, “ Branslav said sharply. “ Tell me what you want to tell me or let me get out of here. “
Robert frowned, his friend's agitation obvious. “ Okay. I'll make it short and sweet. Get away from Martin Richardson before he ruins your life. Request a trade and get the hell out of Reno. “
“ I can't do that, “ Branslav said. “ I'm an integral part of this team and they need me. Martin says it all the time. “
“ He told me that too until I requested the trade. Then I was nothing but shit to the team, “ Robert reminded Branslav.
“ I'm not requesting a trade, “ Branslav was tired of hearing the word. “ Look, I have to go. “
“ Think about what I said! “ Robert shouted as Branslav took off through the kitchen to the back door. “ And take Daniel with you or he'll be next! “
“ Later! “ Branslav called then slammed the door behind him.
Robert clenched his fists at his sides, glaring at the kitchen window as Branslav drove out of the driveway. He sighed once Branslav was gone and shook his head. “ Damn stubborn git, “ He muttered then headed into the kitchen. He opened the fridge, grabbed a bottle of water and opened it.
He took a big drink then opened the freezer. “ Oh fucking shit, “ Robert muttered when he saw nothing but the box for the sausage biscuits. He picked it up, finding there was only one package left. He looked towards the stairs, wondering what he would feed Betty for lunch considering he held what seemed to be the last bit of food in the house in his hand.
He tossed the sausage biscuits back in the freezer since he wasn't hungry and went to the cabinets, hoping to find something. He found a box of stale crackers, two unopened boxes of cereal and a box of powdered milk. “ That's a start but it's not enough, “ He sighed to himself.
He went back into the living room and got dressed. After he had his shoes on, he headed outside to the garage and checked the deep freeze. It looked like it hadn't been used in a while because of the thick layer of dust on top. He opened it and found two dozen frozen dinners that were all caked in frost and probably freezer burned.
“ That's just wonderful, “ Robert muttered sarcastically. He went back into the kitchen, looking for the only thing he felt like eating. He wasn't for sure what to do since he couldn't leave Betty alone but he tried to think of something. He looked in the lower cabinets until he found Branslav's stash of protein bars.
Robert made himself eat one while he thought of something to do. Betty would need more than cereal to eat and he wasn't about to feed her freezer burned food. He went over to the computer and turned it on. He finished the bar as he waited for the computer to boot up. Once it had, he got online and went to the phone directory...
**
Branslav pulled the SUV into his parking space, shut the engine off and got out. He locked the doors before walking towards the players entrance. He was extremely nervous but he tried not to show it. He opened the door to find Daniel lingering a few feet away from it, staring at the floor as he leaned against the wall..
“ Hey, “ Branslav said to get his attention.
Daniel looked up, “ So they finally got you? “
Branslav nodded, “ Yeah. Lotte called me last night. “
“ Lotte and Coach Sweet kept calling me and asking me if I knew where you were and I couldn't tell them anything. I tried calling you but it kept going to your voice mail, “ Daniel spoke fast.
“ Slow down, “ Branslav put his hand up. “ I had my phone off because it couldn't have it turned on in the hospital. “
“ Hospital? “ Daniel furrowed his brow. " Did you get hurt yesterday? “
Branslav shook his head, " It was Betty. We were supposed to hang out yesterday but she was late. I went to check on her and she had fallen down the stairs at her place. “
“ Oh damn, “ Daniel said. “ Is she okay? “
“ She's got a concussion and a sprained ankle. She can't be left alone for two days, “ Branslav said. “ I was going to take care of her before I found out about this. Is the scout already here? “
“ I don't know. I just got here and no one else is around yet. I thought I'd wait out here until someone else came in, “ Daniel said then furrowed his brow. “ Where's Betty if she's not supposed to be left alone? “
“ She'll be okay. She's with someone, “ Branslav said. “ I found someone on short notice. “
“ Who? “ Daniel said.
Branslav's mood turned a bit dark, “ Robert. “
Daniel looked surprised, “ He came all the way out here to help you with Betty? “
“ I had no one else I could ask really, “ Branslav said.
Daniel thought about it and shrugged, “ I guess not. “
“ It was weird though, “ Branslav said. “ I called him and he got it together in no time at all “
Daniel nodded, “ Wow. He must have laid out some long green for that ticket. You have to pay a huge chunk of change to fly last minute. “
“ But I called him and he called me back less than ten minutes later and everything was all set up, “ Branslav shook his head. “ It just seems funny. “
Daniel arched an eyebrow, “ Yeah it does. Are you sure it was just ten minutes? “
" Yeah, " Branslav nodded. “ It was that fast. “
“ I wager White Bread was expecting you to call on him for help, “ Martin's voice startled Branslav and Daniel. He was standing in the side hallway that contained Coach Sweet's office.
Branslav growled, unhappy that Martin had eavesdropped on the conversation. “ Where did you come from? “
“ I was in Coach Sweet's office and I heard you two talking out here. So White Bread is all alone with your precious Betty? “ Martin's voice sounded like he was trying to hint at something.
“ Yes. So? “ Branslav glared at Martin. “ I couldn't leave her alone and I had to be here. I had to do something since she... “
“ I know, I know. Your manager told me all about it, “ Martin said. “ She told me how you had went to her house because she didn't show up for your date and found her injured. How very valiant of you to ride in on your white horse and save her life. “
“ I couldn't just leave her there, “ Branslav said. “ She could have been there for days and not have been found until it was too late. The doctor even said so. “
“ I told you to leave her alone though, “ Martin said. “ Didn't I just finish telling you to not get involved with her? “
“ And didn't I just finish telling you that it was none of your business? “ Branslav replied.
“ You can't afford to lose your focus this late in the game boy, “ Martin gave Branslav a cold look. “ Get a contract with a big league team and you can date that degenerate smut queen all you want. Until then, you focus on nothing but your game... unless you like the idea of going home as a loser. “
Branslav frowned, unable to think of anything to say. He didn't want to forget about Betty but he would have to if he ended up going back to his homeland. He did have to focus on his game more than anything but he couldn't lose Betty in the process. He had to think of a way to get both the contract and Betty.
Coach Sweet came out of the office, “ You two should be warming up instead of standing here running your mouths. “
“ I couldn't agree more, “ Martin said. “ You have a big day ahead of you. We'll talk more about Miss Roger-Skogan later. “
Branslav watched as Martin walked out of the side hall and headed for the arena. He glanced at Daniel, “ Come on. Let's go get changed. “
**
Robert stared at Betty. He had come up to wake her but couldn't bring himself to do so quite yet, looking her over as she slumbered. She was covered from the waist down by a comforter, her propped up left foot exposed. The leg of the pajama pants had ridden up and he could see a splint sticking out of the top of the wrap that encircled her ankle.
He let his eyes glide upward to where the blanket didn't obscure his view. The pajamas she had on were dark blue and looked like silk though he knew they were probably polyester. His mouth went dry as he stared at the way the liquidy fabric clung to her plenteous chest. He shut his eyes, recalling what the fleshy orbs looked like when he had seen them and how badly he wanted to touch them.
He clenched his fist at his sides, his imagination taking over for a moment. He fantasized about how it would feel to have Betty pressed against him, their bodies touching in every imaginable place. He wondered how it would feel to have her pressed tight against him, her breasts pressing against his chest. He took deep breaths, trying to keep it together and not get aroused
He opened his eyes again, moving his gaze to her face. She looked so peaceful and beautiful, he couldn't help but stare for a long moment. Her dark hair was tousled from sleeping, her dark pink lips parted slightly as she slept. They were so full and beautiful, he wanted to kiss them.
He swallowed as he looked at her, shutting his eyes again. He wanted to kiss her awake, rouse her from her slumber with gentle caresses. He wanted to plunder her lips, fondle her as the last vestiges of sleep fell away from her. He forced his eyes open, bound and determined not to lose control of himself.
She had scarcely left his thoughts since he had left her the Friday before. She drifted through his slumber almost every night, even nights he hadn't slept much at all. The visions of what he saw at her house had tormented him during his waking hours. The flashes of memory of each curve attacked him when he least expected it.
The thoughts of the things he wanted to do with her feathered across is psyche in spite of his best efforts to stop them. He wanted to not think of her in such a way but it was getting harder every day. It had been so long since had wanted someone so badly but he was trying his best to control it.
He sighed, deciding to wake her. He had to see if she was doing okay instead of daydreaming about her. He walked into the room, stopping a few feet from the bed. He took a deep breath to steady his voice before he called her name.
Betty twitched a little, her heavily lashed eyelids fluttering open. She looked confused for a moment then a slow smile spread across her lips, “ Hey. “
“ You know why I'm here, “ He smiled.
“ Yeah, “ Betty yawned. She scooted up on the pillows a bit. “ Go on. “
“ What's your name? “ Robert asked.
“ Beatrix Dagrun Rogers-Skogan, “ Betty replied.
Robert furrowed his brow because he had never heard her full name, “ Beatrix Dagrun? “
Betty rolled her eyes, “ My father named me after his mother. “
“ Beatrix Dagrun? “ Robert said again. “ Now I see why you want to be called Betty. “
“ I like my birth name, “ Betty said. “ It's just better to use Betty. I don't get so many funny looks like the one you have on your face right now. “
“ Sorry it's I just never heard that name Dagrun before that's all, “ Robert said. “ What kind of name is it? “
“ Scandinavian. It's an old name that means 'Day Of Secret Lore', “ Betty explained.
“ 'Day Of Secret Lore' huh? “ Robert smiled a little. “ Nice name for a writer. “
Betty nodded, “ Yeah. I think so. My mom didn't like it at first but she warmed up to it. “
" Didn't she have a say? " Robert was puzzled.
" She was sedated, " Betty sighed. " I was a big baby so she had to have a c-section. When she woke up, I was already named. "
“ Oh. I see. Do you know what Beatrix means? “ Robert arched an eyebrow. “ I'm curious. “
“ 'Blessed', “ Betty said.
“ 'Blessed Day Of Secret Lore', “ Robert said then smirked. “ Isn't that the title of... “
Betty chuckled, “ My second book. The one about the princess that fulfills the ancient prophecy to vanquish the evil tyrant. “
“ Oh yeah. You know, I thought from the title it was a fairy tale, “ Robert said. “ Then I opened it and got a huge surprise. “
“ It wasn't like any fairy tale you ever read huh? “ Betty smiled. She was rather proud of the epic tale she had woven. “ What was your favorite part? “
“ I have to say the part where the princess combined her power with the prince from the rival kingdom was very well written. It fit perfectly into the story, “ Robert said. “ It was very sexy and didn't take away from the story at all. “
“Thanks. I worked really hard on it so it would fit, “ Betty said quietly.
“ It really knocked my socks off, “ Robert said. “ It was really steamy. “
Betty blushed deeply and smiled, “ Thanks. “
Robert smirked when he saw she looked a little more than embarrassed, “ What's wrong? “
“ I don't like talking about those scenes, “ Betty muttered.
“ You wrote them so why don't you like to talk about them? “ Robert asked. He thought it was kind of funny that she could write such scenes of unbridled passion but be so shy she couldn't talk about it. " You knew exactly what you were talking about. "
Betty shook her head, “ It's all my imagination “
“ Well you have a good imagination then, “ Robert said. “ You got everything spot on. “
“ I did? “ Betty looked a little shocked. Everything she knew of romance came from reading too many romance novels and watching too many romantic movies. She had been afraid of getting things wrong but she obviously hadn't.
He nodded, “ That's why people read your stuff. It's like stepping into another reality. You make people feel like they're there. You pull them into your world and don't let go until the end of the book. “
Betty smiled, “ I've heard that said a few times. “
“ It's true, “ Robert said.
“ Thanks, “ Betty nodded.
Robert glanced around the room, trying to think of something else to talk about. He saw a dozen red roses propped up against the wall, the stems sitting in a gas station plastic cup. “ Did Branslav get you those? “ He motioned towards the flowers.
“ Yeah, “ Betty nodded. “ He gave them to me last night. He said he bought them for when I came over to teach him to cook. He said he even got soda for me. “
“ Yeah, “ Robert said. He had seen it as well as a bottle of wine. “ It's downstairs in the fridge. “
Betty looked at the floor, “ Can I tell you something? “
“ Sure, “ Robert said.
Betty glanced at the roses again, “ I hate roses. “
“ Oh? “ Robert was surprised. “ How come? “
“ Whenever my dad wanted something, he'd show up with roses. Well, when he wanted money. Usually, if he brought home more than a dozen, it meant he was really in the hole from gambling. That's why I don't like them, “ Betty said.
“ Then why did you tell me to get them for Pauline? “ Robert furrowed his brow.
Betty sighed, “ Not everyone hates them like I do and you said she liked them. “
“ Oh, “ Robert said. “ To tell you the truth, I hate them too. Pauline used to demand them when we were dating. She likes wearing rose scented perfume too. “
“ You told me that already, “ Betty said.
“ Then you understand, “ Robert said.
Betty nodded, “ Yeah. “
“ So what are you going to do with those? “ Robert asked.
“ Let them die, “ Betty said. “ What else is there to do right? “
“ True, “ Robert nodded.
There was a long silence then Robert slapped his forehead, “ Damn. I forgot. What's today? “
“ Sunday. Why? “ Betty furrowed her brow. “ Did you have to be somewhere? “
“ No. That's the next question I had to ask you, “ Robert said. “ I'm supposed to be making sure you're coherent, remember? “
“ Oh, “ Betty said. " That's right. "
“ Yeah. So, where are we? “ Robert asked.
“ Branslav's house, “ Betty replied.
Robert smiled, “ Good. “
They were quiet again then Betty sighed, “ I'm starving. “
“ I bet, “ Robert said. “ Two itty bitty sausage biscuits don't make a meal. I'm surprised he didn't give you more to eat than that. “
“ Did Branslav give you those too? “ Betty arched an eyebrow. “ Did he make yours into jerky like he did mine? “
“ No. I ate a protein bar for breakfast “ Robert said. “ I was thinking about ordering some pizza or something to hold you over until he gets back. “
“ Hold me over? What about you? “ Betty asked.
Robert shook his head, “ Don't worry about me. I'm not hungry. “
“ Oh, “ Betty said. She noticed Robert looked like he had lost some weight but wasn't going to mention it. She wasn't for sure if it was just her eyes playing tricks on her.
Robert looked at the floor for a long moment then motioned over his shoulder, “ I ought to go order that pizza. It should be here by lunch time if I order it now. “
“ Okay, “ Betty nodded.
“ What would you like on it? Any requests? “ Robert asked.
“ The works, “ Betty said. “ I like a lot of stuff on my pizza. “
Robert perked up a little, “ You do? “
“ Yeah, “ Betty said. “ It's better with everything on it. "
“ I think so too, “ Robert was glad for the diversion. The mention of his favorite kind of pizza made him feel a little hungry. He smiled, “ So a large with everything on it huh? “
“ Large is kind of big for just me, “ Betty said. “ I mean, unless you changed your mind. “
“ I think I could eat a piece with you, “ Robert smiled. “ I have to watch you eat to make sure you don't choke so why not? “
“ Right, “ Betty nodded. “ I'll need my pain medicine then too so it'll work out great. “
“ Awesome, “ Robert nodded. “ I guess I'd better go order it then. “
Betty smiled, “ Yeah. I'll call you if I need anything. “
“ Right, “ Robert said. He stepped back towards the door. “ See you in a little bit. “
**
Branslav stood in the furthest corner of the gym as the rest of the team took a water break. He glanced around to make sure no one was watching him as he had his phone speed dial Robert. He wanted to see how things were going and let him know when he'd be home. The phone rang and rang before going to Robert's voice mail. Branslav growled and dialed again, getting the same result.
He snapped his phone closed as Daniel came walking over, “ So how did we do? “
Branslav glanced at him, “ Your squad did alright. “
The team had divided in half, Branslav leading one group while Daniel led the other group so the could have a scrimmage for the scout. Branslav's team ended up beating Daniel's by three points but both players had shined. Branslav glanced over at the grim looking scout. The man seemed more suited to being a mortician because of his dour looks.
The scout hadn't smiled once and seemed to be taking endless notes about the game. Martin had sat next to the scout the entire time while Coach Sweet screamed orders at both squads. Martin had been watching critically and taking notes of his own. Branslav knew it was probably so Coach Sweet could tell them everything they did wrong while he wooed the scout.
“ So why are you over here? “ Daniel asked Branslav. “ Everyone else is over at the bench. “
“ I'm trying to get Robert but he's not answering, “ Branslav's frown deepened. “ I'm worried. “
“ He's not answering his phone? “ Daniel said as Branslav's phone started to ring. He looked at the caller ID.
Branslav glared at Daniel and he rolled his eyes, “ Oh alright. I'll be at the bench if you need me. “
Branslav waited for Daniel to leave before he answered. “ Yes? “
“ You rang? “ Robert said.
“ Yes I did, “ Branslav said sharply. “ Where were you? “
“ Helping Betty. I left my phone downstairs, “ Robert replied. “ I was just about to order us a pizza since you were so gracious to leave us with nothing to eat. “
“ There's enough to eat, “ Branslav said.
“ Two boxes of cereal, powdered milk and a box of stale crackers is not enough to eat, “ Robert said.
“ What? “ Branslav was surprised. “ Didn't you check the freezer? “
“ It's empty except for those sausage biscuits, “ Robert said.
“ And the deep freeze? “ Branslav said.
Robert scoffed, “ I'm not feeding her that freezer burned stuff. When did you defrost that last anway? “
Branslav furrowed his brow then growled. “ I don't know and I didn't think to get anything last night. I thought I had plenty. “
“ You were at the megastore damn it. How could you not get food? “ Robert said. “ You've been totally distracted since last night. Could you please tell me what is going on with you? “
“ No. I can't, “ Branslav said.
“ Branslav, “ Robert said. “ I'm your best friend. You can tell me anything. My lips will be sealed. “
“ I'll tell you when I get home. I haven't got time right now, “ Branslav said.
Robert sighed, “ Fine. Be that way. I'm ordering the pizza so Betty and I can eat. When you leave there, you better remember some fresh food. “
“ Don't tell me what to do, “ Branslav snapped.
“ I'll tell you anything I want, “ Robert snapped back. “ Now, remember food or I'm going out when you get home and get it myself. “
Branslav narrowed his eyes, “ Maybe you should do that instead. I have a road trip to get ready for when I get home. “
“ You just keep on with this attitude. I haven't told Betty there's nothing to eat but I will if you keep it up, “ Robert said. “ You haven't impressed her yet and I think she'll be even less impressed when she finds that out. “
“ Don't tell her. I'll get some stuff on the way home, “ Branslav said.
“ Good. Now, what are we going to do about tomorrow? Are we staying here while you're gone or am I going to take care of Betty's at her house? “
Branslav covered his eyes with his hand, “ Fuck. “
“ You didn't think that far ahead did you? “ Robert asked.
Branslav sighed, “ No. “
“ What is the matter with you man? “ Robert snapped. “ This isn't like you. “
“ Look, “ Branslav said sharply. “ We'll deal with all of that when I get home. I have to go. “
“ Fine. Whatever, “ Robert said. “ Later. “
Branslav snapped his phone shut, wondering what he was going to do. Robert had presented a valid point about the next day. He decided to see how things played out once he got home. He really couldn't do anything else.
“ Oh. There you are, “ Lotte's voice startled him. “ Why are you hiding back here? “
Branslav glanced at her, “ I had to check on Betty. “
“ I see, “ Lotte said. “ Martin told me Hughes came out to help. “
Branslav looked away, “ It's really none of your business. “
“ It has to do with you. It's my business, “ Lotte said. “ Now come on. The break is almost over. “
Branslav nodded, “ I know. I'm coming. “

I'm coming. “
