Branslav sat across from Martin and Lotte as they waited for their waitress to come and take their orders. Martin had reserved a booth at Chang Wang's for them to discuss their business but Martin wanted to get the ordering out of the way first. The restaurant was busy and noisy but that was normal. Branslav wished they had picked some place quieter though because the controlled chaos around them did nothing for the stress he felt.
A waitress walked over finally, “ May I take your orders? “
“ It's about time, “ Martin said sharply. “ What took you so long? “
“ I'm sorry for the wait sir, “ The waitress replied.
“ You'd better be, “ Lotte snapped.
“ I really am ma'am, “ The waitress replied. “ It's just that it's so busy... “
“ That's no excuse, “ Martin said. “ Now, I would like an order of crab wontons for my appetizer and the Kung Pow chicken. “
The order made Branslav think of Betty. He recalled she had gotten the same thing when she had come to the restaurant. He wondered if she was doing alright with Robert and if he would get to see her even for a little bit before he had to leave. He also had to decide if he was going to talk Robert into staying at his place or if his friend was determined to take care of Betty at her place.
He got out his cell phone as Lotte placed her order but she reached over and snatched it out of his hand without missing a beat with the waitress. When she was finished, she glared at him, “ No distractions. This is important. “
Branslav growled and wanted to say something to his stepsister but he couldn't because the waitress spoke to him next “ What would you like sir? “
“ I want the pork ribs for my appetizer and the spicy beef, “ Branslav handed her his menu.
“ Are you sure you should be eating that? “ Lotte arched an eyebrow at him. “ You know pork and beef are bad for you. “
“ Yes. I want it so I'm going to have it, “ Branslav glared at Lotte. " Besides, they use lean meat here. "
Lotte rolled her eyes, “ Fine. “
“ What would you like to drink? “ The waitress said.
“ I'll have water, “ Lotte said.
“ I'll have a beer, “ Branslav said but caught a dirty look from Lotte. He looked at her, “ I'm only having one. “
“ Whatever, “ Lotte muttered.
“ I'll have a beer as well, “ Martin said.
“ American or Imported? “ The waitress asked.
“ American, “ Martin said.
“ Imported, “ Branslav replied.
“ I'll be back with your drinks in moment, “ The waitress said and walked away.
Lotte looked at Branslav, “ You know I'm right. You really shouldn't be eating pork or beef. You know how many drugs the put into beef these days. “
“ I don't care. It is what I want. Stop treating me like a child, “ Branslav snapped.
Martin arched an eyebrow, “ She's only looking out for your best interest. “
Branslav narrowed his eyes, “ But... “
“ Don't talk back to me boy, “ Martin said. “ I can tell that scout you aren't interested in leaving the team and you'll be back in Slovenia in seven months time, sooner if we don't make the playoffs. “
The waitress returned with the drinks, “ Is this brand fine? “
Martin looked at the bottles and nodded, “ Yes. They are. “
The waitress gave Martin his bottle first and then handed Branslav his. She gave Lotte her water then walked away. Branslav twisted the top off then took a big swig, sulking at Martin's threat.
Lotte took a sip of her water then looked at Branslav, “ Martin and I have a plan for how you are going to win the scout over. “
“ Yes we do, “ Martin said. “ If we really impress him, he'll try to get a big name team to take you and they'll pay top dollar to get you. We have to make you look like a hot commodity so you don't get sent up to Canada or out East. “
“ But I am a hot commodity. I am one of the best in the prep league, “ Branslav pointed out.
“ Yes but who's better than you. Who tops you every year in the polls? “ Martin asked.
Branslav thought about it then sighed, “ Robert. “
“ Exactly. Can you imagine where our team would be right now if he hadn't sabotaged everything by leaving for Taos? “ Martin said.
“ He did that for his kid, “ Branslav countered. “ He needed to go somewhere that paid him more. “
“ You know that's a lie, “ Martin said. “ He left because he wanted to. He did it for himself. “
Branslav looked at the table. “ I'm just as good as he is. That's why I'm second. “
“ Second place is first loser, “ Martin said.
“ Then do something about those slackers I play with. They're the problem here, “ Branslav tried to control the anger that was starting to creep into his voice. “ Daniel and I bust our asses out there every game shooting almost every shot that goes in. “
“ Don't blame your substandard leadership skills on them. You're the captain and you need to get them fired up. You need to motivate them. We need to break this losing streak we're on and do it fast, “ Martin said.
“ Then have them work on their skills and stop picking on Daniel and I, “ Branslav responded. “ They're the ones who need to improve. They've even stopped talking to Daniel because he's so much better than them. “
“ It's your job to look into that. Encourage them to improve, “ Martin said. “ Tell Daniel to help as well. “
“ Coach needs to help too, “ Branslav said.
“ No one listens to Coach Sweet and you know it, “ Martin said.
“ If he wouldn't scream at everyone all the time maybe they would, “ Branslav shot back. “ He just tells us how much we suck and it's been that way since you hired him before Robert left. He never tells those other guys how to improve and makes Daniel and I stay when we're the best on the team. “
“ You're examples. We want to other guys to strive to be like you, “ Martin said.
“ All they strive to do is get away from us. They're jealous of us and don't even try to play with us. They do the bare minimum to get through a game then they leave, “ Branslav said.
“ I know and I want you to change that, “ Martin said.
“ The only way it is going to change is if you get rid of them and bring in new players that are willing to cooperate, “ Branslav slammed his fist down on the table, making the beers and Lotte's water jump.
“ I may just do that. I may just get rid of the lot of you, “ Martin was starting to get angry. His Briton accent was coming out as he glared at Branslav. “ I'll send you back to that mountain town I got you out if first then send Daniel back to that corn farm he came from. “
“ You try it. The only thing you'll get to fill the spots are a bunch of immature High School graduates just like the rookies you got this year. You'll have nothing, “ Branslav said. “ But I guess you would like that, wouldn't you? A bunch of children that will be easy for you and Coach Sweet to control. “
Martin growled, “ At least they'll be better behaved than what I've got now. What happened to that team that swept the championships last season? “
“ I don't know. Daniel and I are still playing like champions. You ask those other guys, “ Branslav pointed at Martin.
Lotte was looking at her fingernails, seemingly bored with the argument. She had seen many personality clashes between her stepbrother and Martin so she wasn't the least bit phased by the arguing. She glanced up to see if the appetizers were coming when something caught her eye. She had a perfect view of the take-out waiting area and standing at the register was someone she knew quite well.
“ I hate to interrupt but isn't that Robert now? “ She said, pointing at him.
Martin and Branslav both looked in the direction she was pointing. Martin smirked, “ Well. I thought he was supposed to be watching your precious little smutress. “
“ He is, “ Branslav hissed. " And don't call her that! "
“ Then I'd go see what he's doing here if I were you, “ Martin said.
“ I will, “ Branslav scooted out of the booth and made his way to towards the take-out area.
**
Robert stood at the take-out counter as the teenage boy cashier attempted to locate his order. He had called it in right before he brought Betty downstairs. She was out in the car waiting on him since she couldn't go in. Not only did she not have shoes on but they had to leave her crutches behind in the garage since the tiny sports car didn't have room for them.
“ Maybe it isn't ready yet sir, “ The cashier said after he looked through all the ready orders. The little Asian kid looked like he was scared Robert would get angry. He was dwarfed by at least a foot and it would take at least one and half of the kid to make one of Robert weight wise.
Robert sighed, “ I was scared of that. I should have called it in a little earlier than I did. I can wait though. “
“ Okay, “ The cashier said, looking relieved. “ It shouldn't be too long of a wait. “
“ I'll be back in a minute then. I need to check on my friend out in the car, “ Robert jerked his thumb over his shoulder.
“ That's fine. If it comes out while you're out there I'll hold it here, “ The cashier nodded.
Robert turned to walk back out to the car when someone grabbed his right shoulder. He glanced to the side to see Branslav standing there, looking confused. “ Oh hey. What's up? “ Robert asked. “ I didn't know this was where Martin was taking you for dinner. “
“ Obviously, “ Branslav said sharply. “ Why are you here? “
“ I had to pick up dinner for Betty and I, “ Robert motioned towards the counter. “ You know they take forever with deliveries so I figured I could come get it and make it easier on them. Betty and I needed some air anyway. “
“ Where is she? “ Branslav looked around.
“ The car, “ Robert pointed to the door. “ The damn thing actually runs. “.
“ You aren't supposed to leave her alone, “ Branslav said.
“ I didn't, “ Robert said. “ I'm going out to check on her right now. “
Branslav growled, “ I'm going to go check on her too. “
“ Fine. She's alright but if you want to see for yourself go ahead, “ Robert shrugged.
Branslav followed Robert out to the car. Betty was watching the door and she looked surprised to see Branslav. She rolled down her window when he came over to her side and squatted down. “ I didn't think you'd be here, “ Betty said.
“ I didn't think you'd be here either, “ Branslav said. He noticed she wasn't in her pajamas. Instead, she wore what looked to be Robert's clothes.
“ Well I needed to eat but Robert, “ Betty said but Branslav cut her off.
“ I know. He didn't want to have the order delivered, “ Branslav nodded. “ Did you have any trouble getting down? “
Betty shook her head, “ No. Robert helped. We had to leave the crutches at the house though. “
Branslav nodded, “ It's okay. Do you think you'll be up when I get home? “
“ I don't know, “ Betty cocked her head to the side. “ Why? “
“ I'd like to spend some time with you, that's all. I won't see you again until later in the week, “ Branslav said quietly. “ You will come to the game Saturday, right? “
“ If I'm up to it, “ Betty nodded. “ Say. “
“ Huh? “ Branslav leaned closer.
“ Would you mind it too much if Robert and I went to my house tomorrow? “ Betty asked. “ I'd really like to sleep in my own bed. “
“ But if you stay at my house you'll have lots of room to move around, “ Branslav said.
Betty smiled and gave Branslav a gentle look as she put her hand on his cheek, “ The less space the better. I won't be stuck in one room at my house either. “
Branslav leaned into her hand a little, “ Are you sure? “
“ Yeah, “ Betty nodded. “ I'm getting a little stir crazy in your guest room. “
Branslav sighed, “ Okay. If it's what you want then I won't argue. “
“ Thanks, “ Betty said. “ You better get back to your dinner. “
Branslav nodded, “ Okay. I'll see you when I get home. “
“ I'll try to be awake for you, “ Betty smiled as she let her hand fall away from his cheek.
Branslav stood up, walking back to Robert. He had stopped at the door of the take-out section. He looked at him, “ Did you hear any of that? “
Robert shook his head. He had been trying not to look since Betty was being so friendly with Branslav. Seeing her touch him made him feel jealous in spite of himself, “ No. “
“ She said she wants to go to her place tomorrow morning. She said she'd be more comfortable in her own bed, “ Branslav sighed. “ I guess we'll be getting up really early so I can drop you off. “
“ Oh, “ Robert nodded. He had asked her where she wanted to go and she said her house. He hadn't expected her to tell Branslav though. He thought he would have to tell him. “ Like how early? “
“ I have to be on the bus by six, “ Branslav said.
“ Okay, “ Robert nodded. “ I think it'll be easier that way. That way, I can just call a cab to take me to the airport Thursday morning and she'll be in her own place. “
“ But I'm afraid she'll get hurt again, “ Branslav sighed.
“ The only place she could get hurt again is those stairs and she won't be able to make it up them for a few weeks at least so don't worry about it, “ Robert said. “ It's not like her house is trashy and she'll trip on something. “
“ True, “ Branslav agreed. He had noticed how tidy her place was.
“ She'll be fine. She's a tough girl, “ Robert said. “ When you get home tonight I need to talk to you. “
“ About what? “ Branslav arched an eyebrow.
“ The way you've been acting all day. I want to know why, “ Robert said.
Branslav frowned, “ I don't want to talk about it. It's okay. I can handle it. “
“ If you say so, “ Robert said. He glanced in the window and the cashier was waving him back inside. “ Oh. I think my order's ready. “
Branslav stepped aside and let Robert go inside, following him. He looked over at the table where he had been sitting with Lotte and Martin. He saw that the appetizers had come and Lotte was glaring at him. “ I better go. My food's at the table. “
Robert handed his credit card to the cashier, “ Sure. “
Branslav walked away as the cashier ran the card again, frowning. “ Sir? “
“ Yes? “ Robert arched an eyebrow.
“ This card was declined. Do you have another form of payment? “ The cashier handed him his card.
He looked at it. He had used the card to pay for the pizza and there hadn't been a problem then, “ Declined huh? “
“ Yes sir, “ The cashier nodded. Fear was starting to creep into his face again.
Robert sighed and dug the money he had been saving for a last resort out of his wallet. “ I don't understand why. I just used it this afternoon, “ His voice trailed off as it hit him. He was pretty sure Pauline had called it in as stolen after he had hung up on her.
“ Maybe the network is down, “ The cashier offered. “ Some times that happens this time of night. “
Robert looked at the card again then shook his head, “ I think I know what happened. Don't worry about it. “
“ Okay sir, “ The cashier handed Robert his change and the order. “ I hope it all works out. “
Robert shrugged, “ It will. Goodnight. “
“ Goodnight to you too, “ The cashier said before the next person walked up to the counter.
Robert walked out to the car and opened his door. He sat down and put the bag into Betty's lap, “ Hold this. “
“ Okay, “ Betty said. “ How did he take it? “
“ He took it okay, “ Robert said. “ He didn't look upset to you did he? “
“ No. Just confused about why I'd want to go home, “ Betty said.
“ Ah, “ Robert nodded. “ He thinks your house has something wrong with it because it's little. “
Betty frowned, “ I like my house. “
“ I know you do. I'm not arguing. I'm just saying why Branslav doesn't like it, “ Robert said.
“ Did something happen when you were in there? You looked a little mad before you got in the car, “ Betty looked concerned. “ Did Branslav say something to you? “
“ No, “ Robert said. “ The bitch canceled my credit card so I had to pay cash for dinner. It's not a big deal. I needed to cancel it anyway and get a new one. She just saved me the trouble. “
“ Oh, “ Betty nodded. “ I was scared Branslav had argued with you. “
“ Don't worry about that, “ Robert sighed. “ He's just got a lot going on and I guess it's getting to him. That's what he told me anyway. “
“ I see, “ Betty said.
“ So you ready to head back? “ Robert smiled.
“ Sure, “ Betty said. “ Let's get going before the food gets cold. “
Robert smiled as he started the car, “ Yes. Let's. “
Betty waited until he was on the road before she spoke again. “ So how long do you think it will take? “
“ How long what will take? “ Robert asked.
“ The more extensive test, “ Betty said. “ You said something about Pauline wanting one. “
“ Yeah. Everything I've read says it takes four to six weeks, “ Robert frowned a little. “ I want that bitch out of my life as soon as possible but I guess that's not happening. “
“ I guess not, “ Betty said.
“ I gave my lawyer a copy of the original test but he still says it looked bad because I didn't get her permission first, “ Robert said. “ How the Hell was I supposed to ask her? 'Oh, honey. I need some of your hair because I don't think Alex is my kid.' “
“ No. That would have been bad, “ Betty said.
“ I mean come on, “ Robert said. He shook his head, “ Maybe this is the best way. Then she'll know for sure I'm not trying to pull something. “
“ What does she think you're trying to pull? “ Betty asked.
Robert sighed, “ I don't know. She manufactures excuses for everything. I think she thought I was trying to make something up so I could divorce her. Honestly, all the paranoia and snooping around my shit I could handle. She wasn't going to find anything and she was hurting no one but herself being paranoid I was trying to keep it together for Alex but since he's not mine, what's the point? “
“ My mom made the mistake of staying with my dad because of me, “ Betty said quietly. “ I think it made everything worse personally. Until he died, we were miserable. “
“ See? When I thought Alex was still mine, I worried about how he'd be if I divorced Pauline. I didn't want Alex to be miserable so I stuck it out until now. He hated to see us fight but that's all we've done the last two years, “ Robert said. “ Did I tell you she hasn't even slept with me in the last two years? “
“ No, “ Betty said. “ You didn't. “
“ Oh, “ Robert sighed. “ I thought I did. I won't discuss it any further if you don't want to. “
“ It's okay, “ Betty said.
“ I really don't see much point in staying married to her. My kid isn't my kid, she's denied me and she's screwing someone else so I don't see any reason to stay. “
“ You're preaching to the choir, “ Betty said. “ I think you're in the right on this one. “
“ I'm halfway tempted to just start dating again now because there's no telling how long she's going to drag this thing out, “ Robert said.
“ You really do need someone to keep your mind off of her. Normally I wouldn't suggest it but she made the first move so I guess it isn't a bad thing for you to date someone else, “ Betty said. " Your marriage is over except for the legal part. "
“ I'm starting to lean that way myself, “ Robert said.
Betty sighed, " What about Alex though? "
Robert's blood ran cold at the question. He loved the child but it would be impossible for him to have anything to do with him since he wasn't biologically his. He sighed, " I don't know yet. I'll probably never see him again after the divorce is final. "
" Oh, " Betty said quietly. " I'm sorry if I upset you by asking that. "
Robert put his left hand up, " It's okay. You didn't. "
They were quiet for a long while then Robert glanced at Betty. “ Hey. “
“ Huh? “ Betty said.
“ Do you have to go right back upstairs after we get back to Branslav's? “ Robert asked.
Betty thought about it, “ Well, I guess not. Why? “
“ Aren't you getting tired of being pinned up in that room? “ Robert turned down the street that would ultimately lead them back to Branslav's but it would take a few more minutes than the usual way. He wanted to spend as much time with Betty outside of the house as he could.
Betty shrugged, “ I suppose so. “
“ Why don't we, after we eat dinner, go to the living room and watch a movie? “ Robert offered.
“ I have to take my pills after I eat but I can try to stay awake for a movie, “ Betty said. “ Do you have anything in mind? “
“ We'll have to see what Branslav has, “ Robert said. “ He's got a lot of DVDs. I noticed that you do too. I kind of saw them when I was in your room. “
Betty laughed, “ Yeah. Mr. Television was my best friend after my mom died and even more so after I got fired. “
“ So how about it? “ Robert asked.
“ I guess I could try, “ Betty said. “ I'll see how long I can go without my pain medicine so I can stay awake. “
“ I don't want you hurting on my account, “ Robert reached over and took her hand in his. “ If you fall asleep, I'll get you back upstairs. “
“ You really want to watch a movie with me? “ Betty asked.
“ Yeah, “ Robert said. “ I really do. “
Betty smiled, blushing a little bit. “ I'm flattered. “
“ What was it you said the other day? Flattery will get me everywhere? “ Robert smirked.
Betty laughed, “ Yeah. “
Robert's expression became mischievous, “ I think you said some other things too. “
Betty bit her lip then said, “ Like what? “
“ Oh I don't know. Something about thinking things about me while we were dancing, “ Robert chuckled when Betty took a sharp breath. “ You didn't think I'd remember? “
Betty looked at the take-out in her lap, “ I knew you'd remember. I just didn't know when you'd bring it up. “
Robert neared Branslav's house, “ We can talk about that after we get dinner on the table. I would really love to know though. “
Betty couldn't help but recall her dream. Things weren't playing out exactly but they were pretty close. She glanced at Robert, “ What if Branslav comes home while we're talking? “
“ Don't worry about him, “ Robert said. “ We're just going to talk and he can't get pissed over that. “
“ But what if something happens? “ Betty asked then looked like she wanted to take the words back.
" Do you think something is going to happen? " Robert arched an eyebrow. " What do you think will happen if we talk? "
" I don't know, " Betty said quietly.
Robert smiled as he turned into Branslav's driveway, “ Well then. We'll burn that bridge when we get to it.
