Branslav sat in the locker room for the Carson City Civet Cats. He had set his alarm specifically so he could get up and catch Betty on TV. After much searching, he found the remote for the TV. He found the channel for 'Hello America' and waited for seven o'clock to roll around.

“ Damn it man, “ Daniel whispered sharply, startling Branslav. He stood in the doorway that led out into the hallway and had a bewildered look on his face. “ What are you doing? “

Branslav glared at him, “ Don't scare me like that! “

Daniel frowned, “ You shouldn't even be in here. Why are you in here? “

“ Betty's going to be on TV in ten minutes. I didn't want to miss it, “ Branslav pointed at the TV.

Daniel took a step into the room, “ You heard Coach. He told us not to wander off. “

“ I didn't, “ Branslav said. “ I'm still in the arena. “

Daniel rolled his eyes, “ I think he meant not to wander from the gym. “

“ But the interview probably won't take longer than five or ten minutes. We can be back before he knows we're gone. “

“ Why didn't you just have Robert record it? “ Daniel said. “ Wouldn't that have been easier? “

Branslav's mood became dark, “ I'm not speaking to Robert anymore. “

“ How come? “ Daniel looked shocked. “ He's your best friend... “

“ WAS my best friend, “ Branslav cut him off. “ We had a fight last night and we decided never to speak to each other again. “

“ How come? “ Daniel walked all the way into the locker room, deciding he was damned anyway. He had already strayed from the gym so it really didn't matter what else he did if he were to be caught.

“ He keeps pressing me about why I'm acting the way I am and I won't tell him, “ Branslav sighed. “ I can't tell him. He wouldn't understand. “

Daniel sat down next to Branslav, “ He'll get pissed off if he finds out. “

“ Yeah and there's nothing he can do about it so there's no point in it either, “ Branslav said. He picked at the carpet, “ I just wish he'd let it go. “

“ He's only pressing you because he cares I think, “ Daniel said. “ You two have been like brothers for as long as I've known you. “

“ I know and he helped me a lot, especially when my English was poor and I could barely get around. He watched out for me like the big brother I never had and it meant a lot to me but now, he's just... I don't know. He's just not the same... he's changed since he found out about Pauline cheating on him, “ Branslav gestured towards the floor as he spoke.

“ I haven't seen him that much since the hotel so I'll take your word for it, “ Daniel glanced at Branslav.

“ He keeps telling me what to do with Betty too. I want to do everything myself and he's treating me like I'm doing it all wrong, “ Branslav sighed. “ He's MAKING me feel like I'm doing it all wrong. “

“ Maybe he's just trying to help you and just seems like he's coming on too strong, “ Daniel offered. He couldn't stand the hurt look on Branslav's face so he looked at the floor as well. He could tell Branslav was really upset and confused by Robert's behavior but something else was bothering him besides. “ Why don't you just talk to him since he knows you so well? “

“ I can't, “ Branslav was picking at the carpet again. “ He won't be able to help me out of what's going on with the team, I don't want to talk about Betty with him and I don't want to bother him with all of this in the first place since he's already got a lot of plates. “

Daniel couldn't help but snicker then stanched it. Slang just wasn't Branslav forte. “ Buddy. I didn't mean to laugh but I think what you meant to say is he's already got a lot ON his plate. “

“ Yeah whatever, “ Branslav sighed. His voice became quiet as he said, “ And I don't want Betty to find out I might be leaving Reno either way. I want to be the one who tells her when the time is right. “

“ Do you think Robert would tell her if you talk to him about it? “ Daniel asked.

Branslav thought about it and sighed, “ Not really. “

“ Then why are you scared he will? “ Daniel was confused then he thought of something. He quirked his mouth, “ You think it'll influence how Betty feels about you if she knows you might not be there for much longer. “

Branslav glanced at him, “ You get smart at the weirdest moments. “

“ Hey! “ Daniel was insulted at the implications of Branslav's comment. He stopped then smiled, “ I'm right, right? “

Branslav didn't answer but the look on his face said it all. He glanced at the TV and saw the eye catch for the interview. He pointed, “ She's on next. Be quiet. “

Daniel stayed quiet though he had more things to ask. A few commercials ran then the show came back on. He glanced at Branslav but didn't say anything because he was staring so intently at the TV as the anchors came on.

The anchorwoman was a drop-dead gorgeous blonde with perfectly styled hair, white teeth and a million dollar smile. She smiled as her co-anchor introduced the show. He was the typical handsome TV type with chiseled features and a cleft chin, his short black hair plaster down with hairspray and his suit perfectly pressed. “ Good Morning and welcome back to 'Hello America!', I'm Brad Jenkins. “

“ And I'm Jeanette Wilson. We have a very special interview this morning that I'm sure a lot of you have been waiting for. Several months ago, the world was taken by storm by the writings of a phenomenal new author, Melissa French. All three of her books are STILL tied for first place on the bestsellers' lists and there's no sign of them losing any steam. “

The picture changed to footage of Betty signing autographs and posing for photos at various signing engagements. The anchorman started to drone on and on about how her signings had drawn massive crowds but Branslav wasn't paying attention to that. He was just looking at Betty and how beautifully she was dressed for each event. He was enchanted by her shy smile as throngs of mostly male fans adored her.

Daniel was surprised, not fully aware of how popular Betty really was. He wondered if she even had time for Branslav considering the circumstances. He held his tongue though, not wanting to say anything that would anger Branslav. “ Man... I never knew, “ He muttered.

“ Shh, “ Branslav said as the anchors came back on, the screen split to show them on the left and Betty on the right.

“ Good morning Miss French, “ Brad said. “ This is Brad Jenkins. “

“ Good morning Brad, “ Betty said.

“ Good morning Miss French. This is Jeanette Wilson, “ Jeanette said.

“ Good morning Jeanette, “ Betty replied.

“ Thank you for taking time to join us, “ Brad said. “ May I say you absolutely ravishing this morning. “

“ You're welcome and thank you, “ Betty said. Her hair was styled to cover the stitches and bruise on the right side of her forehead. To anyone who didn't know she was hurt, she looked unharmed. She wore a beautiful dark blue blouse that had crystal-like beads dotted across it and it looked like a star scattered sky, the hue bringing out the color of her eyes.

Branslav noted she looked a little nervous and wondered if she was scared. He wanted to be there to hold her once it was all over so he could tell her she was wonderful. He longed to hold her to him and tell her how pretty she looked as well as how much he had missed her. He started to think about what he would do after that then re-focused on the television, deciding to save the daydreaming for later.

“ I guess the most logical question would be how do you feel? “ Jeanette said. “ After all, you say your fame has taken even you by surprise. “

Betty smiled, “ Yeah. I figured my books would come out and be on the bargain rack by now. I really didn't have that much faith in them selling though I thought they were good. “

Brad then chuckled, “ A lot of people say your humility is almost as endearing as your beauty. Were you really that sure you wouldn't be this successful? “

“ Well I didn't want to set my expectations too high so I wouldn't get disappointed in the worse case scenario, “ Betty blushed a little. “ And lots of good stuff just doesn't sell sometimes. “

“ I see, “ Jeanette smiled. “ So how does it feel to have the opposite happen? “

“ It's been quite a ride, “ Betty said. “ I couldn't have even fathomed everything that's happened so far. It's still overwhelming to think about sometimes. It's kept me very busy. “

“ That's understandable. Do you have any new stories you've managed to work on in what little spare time you have? “ Brad asked.

“ I have bits and pieces lying around but nothing concrete. I haven't had the time to really sit down and write, “ Betty seemed to be getting less nervous.

“ But you have some ideas, right? “ Brad asked. “ I know I speak for a lot of people when they say they can't wait for something new. “

Betty giggled, “ I know. I know. I'll try to get something new out there as soon as I possibly can. “

“ That would be great. Maybe you could send me a copy when you get it done, “ Brad smirked.

“ Now, now. That wouldn't be fair Mr. Jenkins, “ Betty had a bit of a teasing edge to her voice as she wagged her finger.

Brad sighed, “ No. It wouldn't. Maybe you could just call me right before it comes out then? I can give you my number after the broadcast. “

“ We'll see, “ Betty giggled.

Branslav frowned, “ That man is flirting with her and she's flirting back. “

“ I'd say so, “ Daniel nodded. “ Just don't get too jealous. She'll probably never meet him. “

“ I don't like it, “ Branslav muttered.

Daniel rolled his eyes, “ Get over it. It's just an interview. “

Branslav growled, “ I still don't like it. “

“ I think the chick is trippin' too, “ Daniel pointed out.

Jeanette did look a little put off by the flirting Brad was engaging in but remained professional. She continued to smile, “ So, how do you feel about some of the reviews that have come out about your books? “

Betty quirked her mouth, “ Which ones? “

“ Let's start with the negative ones, “ Jeanette's voice took on a bit of a catty tone, just barely detectable. “ Some reviewers have called your stories nothing but violent pornography unfit for the printed page. “

“ If that's the way they feel then that's the way they feel. I'm not going to apologize for my art, “ Betty's tone was firm and she held her chin high as she made the statement, her nervousness completely fading away.

Jeanette and Brad both seemed taken aback by the firmness of Betty's stance, having to look at the papers they had on the desk to remember their next question. “ I see, “ Brad stammered a bit. He regained his composure after a moment, “ Well, obviously not everyone feels that way about it. Most of your reviews have been glowing and quite favorable. “

Betty smiled, “ Apparently I'm doing something right. Though, like I said, I never expected success on this scale. “

“ Indeed, “ Jeanette said. The longer the interview went on, Branslav could detect contempt in Jeanette's voice as if she weren't a fan of Betty's. It was either that or she wasn't happy with Brad's flirting.

Brad nodded, “ Yes. Now, I understand that before your books were published, you were in the service industry in Reno. “

“ Yes I was, “ Betty nodded. “ I worked for the catering department at a hotel. I set up and tore down before and after each event. “

“ I'm safe to assume that was some very physical work, “ Brad arched an eyebrow.

Betty nodded, “ Yes. There was quite a bit of heavy lifting but it was satisfying work. I liked it. “

“ That would explain why you're in such great shape. Most writers don't look as good as you do, “ Brad said. He then hissed in pain then gave Jeanette a sideway look. “ I apologize for that. I just had a leg cramp. “

“ Sorry to hear that, Brad. Now, “ Jeanette continued. “ You have said before that you were fired the same day you submitted your books. Do you care to tell the story of that day? “

“ What is there to tell? “ Betty said. “ I had just gotten home from mailing the manuscripts and my boss called, telling me I had been fired. “

“ Oh wow, “ Brad said. “ I bet that was awful. “

Jeanette nodded once, “ Yes. So you care to expand on the details? “

Betty shook her head, “ The details aren't that important. I really don't like to talk about it because it was a dark time for me and I don't like to remember it. “

Jeanette nodded, “ I guess not. Well then. What are your plans for the future? “

Betty looked wistful, “ I don't know. Perhaps I'll write a few more books then settle down. “

“ We asked our viewers to send us some questions they wanted to ask you and we picked the top one. It might be a little personal but it is the top question. Would you like to answer it? “ Brad said.

“ Ask it then I'll decide, “ Betty said.

“ Do you have someone special in your life right now? “ Brad arched an eyebrow. He almost looked hopeful she would say 'no'.

“ Oh. I think I can answer that one, “ Betty smirked. She then said, “ Perhaps. “

Jeanette laughed and Branslav smiled. He looked at Daniel, “ Do you hear that? “

“ She said 'perhaps', “ Daniel pointed out.

“ Well she didn't say 'no', “ Branslav frowned.

Daniel put his hand up, “ Point taken. “

“ Oh, “ Brad seemed to deflate a little bit at Betty's answer. “ Is there a line in case it doesn't work out? “

“ Brad! “ Jeanette slapped Brad's arm.

“ I wasn't asking for me, “ Brad smirked. “ I was asking for a friend. “

Betty blushed and giggled, “ I'm sure he won't be the first one in that line though. “

“ Probably not, “ Brad sighed.

Jeanette glared a bit, “ Indeed. “

“ Well I guess that's all for now, “ Brad said. “ I look forward to seeing you again the next time you burn up the charts, Miss French. “

“ Well then, “ Betty smirked. “ I'll get my matches ready. “

Brad laughed and Jeanette moved onto another subject. Branslav switched off the TV and looked at Daniel. “ Do you think that'll hold you over until you get back to Reno? “ Daniel arched an eyebrow.

“ I think so, “ Branslav thought he was going to float off the floor. He was certain Betty had been talking about him when she said she 'perhaps' had someone special. He couldn't think of anyone else it could have been.

Daniel stood up, “ Okay man. We'd better get back to the gym before Coach does a head count. “

**

Robert held Betty close to him as they finished watching the interview. They were sitting on the edge of her bed as Mr. Hollister stood a few feet away, a little closer to the mirror than to the bed. He was dressed in a charcoal gray suit, baby blue dress shirt and a black tie.

His dress shoes were shined to a sheen and looked quite professional. He gave a disapproving glance when Robert patted Betty's left hand and whispered, “ You did good and you handled that guy very well. “

“ Yes. That was a very pleasing interview even if that one anchor was flirting with you. How shameful, “ Mr. Hollister shook his head.

“ He couldn't help it I'm sure, “ Robert smirked when Betty blushed.

“ Stop you, “ Betty muttered.

Mr. Hollister cleared his throat to get their attention, “ Now, when will you find out when you can travel again? “

“ Today at three, “ Betty replied. “ I have a doctor's appointment. “

“ I see, “ Mr. Hollister stepped closer. His eyes strayed to the bedside table then he gave Robert a sideways glance. “ I assume he will be taking you? “

Betty nodded, “ Yes. My vision is still kind of fuzzy and I can't drive right now. “

“ I would assume not. Perhaps we'll get some good news today and we can lay down some basic plans for your make-up tour to the East Coast, “ Mr. Hollister noticed Robert was looking at him like he wanted to say something. “ Yes son? “

Robert glanced at Betty then said, “ I have some experience with concussions... “

“ Oh you do? Mr. Hollister arched an eyebrow. “ How is that? “

Robert quirked his mouth, “ Someone close to me had one once. It took her six weeks to recover. “

“ Once you say? “ Mr. Hollister said then scoffed. “ Once doesn't make you an expert on concussions. “

“ I'm just saying, “ Robert started.

Mr. Hollister waved his hand, “ I would rather hear what the doctor has to say this afternoon. “

Robert frowned, “ Okay. I get you. “

Mr. Hollister looked at Betty, “ Will you be sure to call me once you know what's going on? “

“ Sure, Betty said then looked at Robert. “ Where's my phone? “

Robert thought about it then slapped his forehead, “ Oh damn. I totally forgot. I need to put it on the charger still. “

“ Still? “ Mr. Hollister was starting to look rather suspicious of Robert. He had been acting wary of him since arriving shortly before the television crew but his caution was quickly giving way to full blown distrust.

Robert looked at him, “ I've been a little busy looking after her and I forgot to do it. “

“ Then you better put it on to charge so it had some power this afternoon, “ Mr. Hollister said. “ I want a full update as soon as you get out of the appointment. “

Robert felt like Mr. Hollister was expecting too much from Betty too soon but didn't say anything. He wanted to wait and see what the doctor said. He sighed, “ Okay. I'll let you know. “

Mr. Hollister arched an eyebrow, “ I would prefer Betty tell me. “

“ I'll have the doctor write it down so I don't forget anything, “ Betty said. She was starting to feel like Mr. Hollister had something against Robert.

“ Good. That way, I can have a hard copy. That will help me out quite a bit, “ Mr. Hollister glanced at the bedside table again then at Robert before looking at Betty. “ I would hate for you to strain yourself unnecessarily. “

Robert wondered why Mr. Hollister kept looking at the bedside table then frowned. He had left the condom packet out in plain sight. He caught Mr. Hollister giving him another dirty look and frowned, “ Is there something wrong? “

“ Do you mind if I speak to Ms. Rogers-Skogan for a moment Mister... I'm sorry. What was your name again? “

“ Robert Hughes, “ Robert said, trying to keep his tone even so he wouldn't upset Betty.

“ Yes. That's right. May I speak to her Mr. Hughes? “ Mr. Hollister asked again.

Robert looked at Betty, “ Will you be okay? “

“ Yeah, “ Betty nodded. “ It's just business. “

Robert brought up his left hand and ran it through her hair, “ Okay baby. I'll be out there if you need me for anything. "

“ Okay, “ Betty whispered then watched as Robert drew away slowly. He then walked to the door and left after giving her one last glance. He shut the door quietly behind him then headed for the kitchen.

“ Betty dear, “ Mr. Hollister's voice brought her attention away from the closed door.

“ Yes sir? “ Betty said. She felt a bit lost without Robert by her side.

Mr. Hollister walked closer to the bed and looked at Betty, “ You seemed rather enamored with that young man. Isn't he the one from the book signing? “

Betty nodded, “ Yes. “

“ I see, “ Mr. Hollister nodded once. “ He seems very enamored by you as well. “

“ I guess you could say that, “ Betty nodded.

Mr. Hollister sighed, “ I hope you're being careful with him. By nature, I don't trust anyone I don't know much about. “

“ You can trust him, “ Betty said. “ He's a very good guy. “

Mr. Hollister cocked his head to the side, “ I hope so. What did you say he did again? I know you told me that he remembered you from the hotel but I can't exactly recall the specifics. “

“ Because I didn't tell you then, “ Betty said. “ He was one of the basketballers from that night. “

Mr. Hollister arched an eyebrow, “ You mean when Martin Richardson got you fired? I just recall you mentioning Branslav's name. “

“ I didn't know the other two by name until recently. Well, I knew their names, I just didn't know them, “ Betty explained. “ I heard their names mentioned that night though. “

Mr. Hollister clasped his hands in front of him, “ So how long have you REALLY known that young man out there? “

“ Personally? “ Betty tried to add it up in her head. “ I guess since the game he invited me to. “

“ So about two weeks? Mr. Hollister arched an eyebrow.

“ I guess so, “ Betty shrugged. “ He had some problems and I offered him my shoulder to cry on. “

Mr. Hollister glanced at the bedside table then looked at the floor, “ I see. Exactly how much do you know about him? “

Betty cocked her head to the side, “ Why in the world are you asking me these things? “

“ I'm just looking out for you, “ Mr. Hollister said. “ Now, how much do you know about him? “

“ I know enough to know he's a good person, “ Betty said.

Mr. Hollister sighed, “ If you think so. I guess all I could ask you at this point is to be careful. Don't get in too deep too fast. "

“ I'm a big girl, Mr. Hollister. I can take care of myself, “ Betty said.

" My child, you're very naive, " Mr. Hollister took a step towards Betty.

" How can you say I'm naive? " Betty blinked. " After everything you know I've been through. "

" I know you think what happened to you before your father died made you strong and it did. However, your mother did her best to keep you shielded from harm afterwards. You may think you're grown up but there are some days you act like a obstinate teenager. An adult wouldn't be sleeping with someone they barely know, " Mr. Hollister glanced at the bedside table.

Betty looked at the table and blushed deeply when she saw the condom packet was there. She didn't quite know how to explain that away. She felt like a child being scolded as Mr. Hollister gave her a disappointed look. " It just sort of happened, " Betty muttered.

" This isn't one of your romance novels, " Mr. Hollister pointed out. " It just doesn't 'happen'. Did he buy those after he came here or did he bring them with him? "

Betty shrugged, " I don't know. I didn't go through his things and I didn't ask. "

Mr. Hollister frowned, " Either way, it shows he had other intentions than to care for you. "

" But... " Betty started.

" You know your mother made me promise to look after you, " Mr. Hollister cut her off. " And that's what I'm doing. I guess all I can do now is implore you to be careful. "

" Yes sir, " Betty muttered.

" I just want you to be cautious. You're going to be a lot wealthier once the movie deals go through and money attracts parasites. He doesn't know about the movie negotiations, does he? " Mr. Hollister asked.

Betty shook her head. She was excited about her stories being made into movies but she had quelled the urge to tell anyone about it. She didn't want to jinx it and wanted to wait until things were concrete before uttering a word. " No, I haven't. "

“ Good. I guess that is all then, “ Mr. Hollister walked to the door. “ Be sure to call me after you get out of your doctor's appointment this afternoon. “

“ I will, “ Betty said and watched as Mr. Hollister left.

**

" Where were you two? " Coach Sweet's voice startled Daniel and Branslav as they snuck back to the gym.

Branslav looked around for where Coach Sweet was standing, finding him just inside the door. He looked at Daniel then at Coach Sweet, " There was something I wanted to see on TV. It was no big deal. "

" Yes it is a big deal, " Coach Sweet pushed off the wall. " I told you to stay in the gym and not wander off. You directly disobeyed an order. "

" You can't control me, " Branslav said sharply. " All I did was watch some TV. "

Coach Sweet cocked his head to the side, " Let's take this out in the hall if you're going to be that way. I don't want to wake the others. "

" Sure, " Branslav replied. He looked at Daniel, " Why don't you go in? This is between Coach and I. "

Coach Sweet narrowed his eyes, " No. Hill's involved too. He disobey me just like you did. "

Daniel got a confused look on his face, " Hey now. I went to go get him so he wouldn't get in trouble. "

" Then you stayed with him when you couldn't get him to come back, " Coach Sweet pointed out. " You made the decision to stay so you're at fault as well. "

Daniel rolled his eyes, " That makes no damn sense at all. "

" The hall. Now, " Coach Sweet moved forward. " Like I said before, I don't want to wake the others. "

Branslav sighed and stepped back out, Daniel as well. Coach Sweet came all the way out into the hall and shut the door behind him. " I don't know what else there is to say, " Branslav glared at him. " I told you what we doing. It's over. "

" Oh no it's not, " Coach Sweet returned the glare. " Do you think this insubordination is acceptable? "

" Insubordination? All I did was watch TV! " Branslav continued to glare as he took a step towards Coach Sweet. " It was only five or ten minutes! "

Coach Sweet didn't back off, " What did you have to see that was so important anyway? "

Branslav narrowed his eyes, " It's my business. "

" If it isn't a big deal then why are you being so defensive about it? " Coach Sweet asked then looked like something came to him. He gave Branslav a cynical smile, " It has to do with that Amazon smut princess of yours, doesn't it? "

" So what if it did? " Branslav shouted.

" Don't you shout at me, Korbel! " Coach Sweet shouted back. " I told you to stay in the gym and I meant it! "

" What are you going to do about it? " Branslav asked.

Coach Sweet gave Branslav a cold smirk, " I can tell that scout you're a troublemaker and it wouldn't be worth it for you to go to the big league. I can tell Martin about all of this insubordination and you'll be back in the mountains herding goats before you can blink. I can take you out of the starting line-up or just make you still out of every game until you've learned your lesson. Shall I continue? "

" You wouldn't dare! " Branslav growled.

" You want to try me? " Coach Sweet asked sharply. " You go ahead and push. You do it and see if it's worth it for some stupid slut. "

" She's not a stupid slut! " Branslav took another step towards Coach Sweet. " You don't know anything about her. "

Coach Sweet scoffed, " I know enough about her kind. Stop wasting your time on her. She's going to be your Waterloo. "

Branslav doubled up his right fist, " Shut up! "

Daniel grabbed Branslav's arm though he knew the bigger man was much stronger than himself. He wanted to stop Branslav before he did something really stupid and hoped what he was doing wasn't a dumb idea. " Man, don't do it! He's not worth it. "

Branslav stood stone still, glaring at Coach Sweet before letting his fist fall to his side. He continued to glare as he said, " No. He's not. "

Coach Sweet took a step back, " Good move Korbel. If you lay a hand on me, I'll have you arrested so fast it'll make your head spin. Now, get back in the gym. I have to decide what I'm going to do to the both of you. "

Branslav and Daniel watched as Coach Sweet walked down the hallway. After he was gone, Branslav turned to the wall and drew his right fist back. He when to slam it into the bricks then decided against it. He looked at Daniel, " Let's go find the weight room . "

Daniel furrowed his brow, " Why? "

" Maybe there's a punching bag, " Branslav said. " I need to hit something. "

**

Robert was standing at the kitchen sink, staring out the window when he heard Betty's bedroom door open and the click of Mr. Hollister's shoes on the tile floor after the door closed. Robert walked to the doorway that led to the narrow hall to find Mr. Hollister was walking towards the kitchen. He stepped back as the man came in, stopping in front of him. " Are you leaving now? " Robert asked.

Mr. Hollister frowned, “ In a few minutes. I want to have a word with you. “

“ Sure, “ Robert said. “ What about? “

“ I want you to make sure you get that paper this afternoon, “ Mr. Hollister said. “ I really do care about Betty's well-being and I don't want her to push her too much too soon. I really need to know how she's doing so I can go from there. “

“ Oh, “ Robert nodded. “ Okay. “

Mr. Hollister cocked his head to the side, “ So you play basketball? “

Robert nodded, “ Yeah. “

“ What team? “ Mr. Hollister arched an eyebrow. " I can't seem to recall from the other day. "

“ Taos Turquoise, “ Robert said.

Mr. Hollister looked puzzled, " Isn't that a prep league team? "

" Yes sir, " Robert nodded.

“ Oh, “ Mr. Hollister said. “ That's quite a ways to travel just to care for someone. Did you take time off to care for Betty? “

Robert shook his head and held up his left hand, “ I'm injured and I'm on leave right now. “

Mr. Hollister stared at the hand and narrowed his eyes, “ I see. “

Robert was puzzled then realized what Mr. Hollister was staring at. He still had a thin white strip of flesh from years of wearing his wedding ring. He was still a bit dark from a summer spent in the sun so the band stood out. There was an uncomfortable silence as Robert debated whether or not to explain himself.

He put his hand down when he made up his mind that he didn't have to unless Mr. Hollister asked, “ It almost healed up and I might be able to play Saturday night. “

“ I see, “ Mr. Hollister nodded. “ That's good I suppose. But I still don't understand why you came all that way just to care for Miss Rogers-Skogan. “

“ She's a friend and she's helped me out in the past so I figured I owed her, “ Robert explained.

“ Helped you out? “ Mr. Hollister arched an eyebrow. “ I'm sorry but you two barely know each other. How could she have helped you out enough to warrant this? “

Robert furrowed his brow, “ I needed someone to talk to and she was there to listen. It meant a lot to me so... “

Talk, “ Mr. Hollister crossed his arms over his chest as he stressed the word.

“ Yes. Talk, “ Robert said. He could tell by the way Mr. Hollister said 'talk' that he knew what had happened or was at least suspicious.

Mr. Hollister looked at the floor as he quirked his mouth, obviously thinking. He took a deep breath and squared his shoulders as he looked at Robert again. “ Now let me get this straight, “ He said. “ You've known Betty for less than a month and you felt it necessary to travel over eleven hundred miles to care for her even though you obviously have other obligations back home. “

Robert didn't like the way Mr. Hollister stressed 'other' nor the suspicious glance he gave to his left hand. “ Look. You don't know anything about me... “

“ That's why I'm having such a hard time understanding your reasons for being here, “ Mr. Hollister cut him off sharply.

“ I told you why I'm here, “ Robert tried not to get angry. “ I'm here to care for her. Branslav asked me to come out and help him out by doing it. “

Mr. Hollister raised his eyebrows, “ Now you're helping Branslav by being here? I thought you said it was for Betty. “

“ He's the one that called me but I would have come if Betty had asked me to, “ Robert said.

“ Because you owed her for talking to you? “ Mr. Hollister was obviously trying to catch Robert lying.

“ You don't understand, “ Robert said. “ It really meant that much to me. “

“ If you say so, “ Mr. Hollister shook his head. “ I really need to get going now. I'll let myself out. “

“ Alright then, “ Robert was relieved the man was going to stop questioning him. He watched as Mr. Hollister walked out of the kitchen and headed for the front door. He waited for him to leave before going back to Betty's room.
