Hitchhiker
The Indigo Kids are on the road again. This time, it was just Ryan
and Jenny alone. He was driving, of course. (Ryan still didn't
trust his wife to drive. Easy to see why if you have been paying
attention.) Jenny looked out the car window. There was going to be
in the woods for this gig. It had just started to rain.
"Think we will be playing today?" Ryan asked.
"Heh," she said. Jenny happened to turn her head and look
forward.
"Stop the car!" she said.
"Huh?" Ryan asked.
"Stop the car!" his wife said again. "Look!" She pointed ahead in
the road. Ryan looked up. A man stood by the road. He had on a
backpack.
"Let's pick him up!" she said. Ryan glanced at her confused out of
the corner of his eyes.
"You sure?" he asked.
"Yes!" she said. Clearly, she wasn't going to back down from
this.
"Alright," Ryan said. He drove over to the young man standing by
the side of the road. Jenny rolled down the window.
"Need a ride?" she asked. She could barely see his eyes through his
dusty mop dark hair.
"Sure," he said. Jenny unlocked the door behind her. The young man
opened it and climbed inside. He buckled up and Ryan drove off.
"So where are you headed?" Jenny asked.
"Momo Fest," the young man mumbled.
"Oh what a considence!" Jenny said. "We're going there too. What is
your name?"
"Yuki," the young man said.
"I'm Jenny and this is Ryan," she said.
"Hi," her husband said.
"Heh," was all Yuki said. He turned and looked out the window.
Meanwhile, Ryan tried to ignore the smell. When was the last time
this kid had a bath? Jenny put her feet on the dashboard. The rain
started to come down harder. It looked like the show was going to
be canceled for the day. And it was going to be an all-day rain
too? Ryan shook his head to himself.
"Damn it," he muttered to himself. Jenny glanced over at him.
"Something wrong?" she asked.
"No," he said. His wife looked out the window as he kept
driving.
