Assassin's Demon by Deminos
In this existence where I cannot even fathom loving myself… why is this mere weak human mortal so important to me… why…why do I love him so? - Deimos
The heat! Dante had awoken at the searing heat practically dripping off Deimos. He had somehow crossed the nonexistence line and had used him as a hugging pillow during the night. “Urgh get off me you jackass,” the only reaction he got was that Deimos mumbled something incoherent and snuggled closer. Well… he had tried. In a sudden shift of movement he jerked away kicking Deimos away with his feet. A little too hard it seemed as the force threw Deimos off the bed and onto the floor. There was a loud thud.
“Ouch!” yelped Deimos instantly awake “What the hell was that for?” he asked looking annoyed.
“I told you to move but you didn't so I moved you myself” He threw a pillow at Deimos who caught it and threw it back twice as hard. “Deimos you go clean up first” ordered Dante and Deimos complied. Mumbling and grumbling in between jaw breaking yawns the whole way.
The sun gleamed a warm light onto the day and the scent of nature was everywhere and yet no where at all. Birds chirped whilst fluttering their wings and the scampering of small furry mammals broke through the laughter of children. Out in the back of the church father Kamui and some of the children were picking out vegetables for today's breakfast, lunch and dinner. The other half were running around the yard playing tag with each other. The girls on the other hand were pulling at Deimos's in an attempt to make him play with them. Each had allocated themselves to one of his limbs while one lucky girl rode on his shoulders. Rather than being slowed down he walked his normal stride making it a fun ride. Hearing the giggles and screams of joy the boys and children that were originally either playing or helping father Kamui swarmed towards Deimos. In an instant he was surrounded by a sea of children wanting rides as well. Dante gave a rare smile at such a sight but smile became frown as such an adorable scene was tainted when he had remembered how Deimos had actually felt towards children.
“Kamui, what's for dinner?” asked Deimos freely as if last night had never happened but then again between those two demons such a thing would have probably been seen as nothing as a feeding.
Kamui stood up and brush the dirt from his robes “vegetables with a side of vegetables… and vegetables…”
The look of horror and despair swept across Deimos's face “Eh? What about the meat? The meat!.”
Dante sighed and decided to finally make his presence known. “Deimos, this is an orphanage remember? Meat is expensive.”
Deimos immediately ran up to him with, trauma in his eyes “But the meat” he insisted.
Another sigh “I know I know just grin and bare it okay? I'll get you meat when we get paid.”
His trauma filled gaze was dusted with weariness “… promise?” he asked.
Dante made a face, all this fuss over meat “Yer Yer whatever.”
Another expression flashed a crossed his face, this time it was realization. “But what about everyone else?” his horrified expression came back “To live everyday without tasting sweet, sweet succulent meat”. He waved his hands dramatically “That's torture!”
Dante rolled his eyes and looked pointedly at Kamui “You see what I have to deal with? I swear your children have more common sense and are better behaved.”
“It's his charm” said Kamui with a chuckle, the gentle smile on his face as usual.
Dante snorted “Only you can see the good in everything.”
“Ah!” Deimos bumped a fist in his open palm “I know!” he looked at Kamui. “Wanna go hunting? I'm really good at it” he grinned.
“It's alright Deimos, the children are used to not having meat and besides; looking after the children is time consuming enough. Having to hunt game would be troublesome.”
Deimos's grin faltered at the rejected offer. “Mhmn Kay then” he muttered with a pitiful whimper.
“Anyways, we're going to head off so don't bother to wait up for us” Dante grabbed the scruff of Deimos's shirt as he dragged them towards town. “Come on idiot we have a lot of things we need to do.” He said ignoring the loud and violent protests and struggles made my Deimos.
“You're so cruel” muttered Deimos darkly as he trailed behind Dante. “You won't even let me play…”
“Whatever Deimos you hate them anyway.”
Deimos lightened instantly and picked up his pace “That's true” he said.
Dante turned around and looked at Deimos with a monotone expression on his face. “You are a hopeless idiot you know that?”
Deimos stepped in front of Dante stopping him from moving forward. “But you love me just the same” he said with a gentle serene smile on his face.
Instantly a heated blush rose to his face and spread all the way to his finger tips and toes. “You idiot! Moron! Yo-You ass!” yelled Dante getting even redder than before.
The gentle smile still remained on Deimos's face. “But. You. Still. Love. Me”
That did it, unable to hit Deimos on the head as usual due to the fact that they were in public Dante closed his eyes and counted to ten. “Deimos?” he called out seeming to have calmed down and gained his composure.
“Yeah?” Deimos stepped closer, a fatal mistake on his part. In a matter of seconds unseen by the eyes of others Dante tripped Deminos and stuck out his elbow where it connected to his chin. In a fluid motion he fell to the floor in a heap whilst Dante walked away `oblivious' to the fact that his companion had fallen over.
“So cruel…” whimpered Deimos as he got up and nursed the bruises that had formed and were already beginning to heal.
“Geez, you're a demon for crying out loud. It can't hurt that badly; grow up” muttered Dante darkly while trying to ignore the clenching in his heart at Deimos's hurt puppy face. It annoyed him that such a small action would make him feel so guilty. It annoyed him even more that the fact that he cared so deeply. Damn it why did this demon keep on twisting his heart like that?
“I am a demon and I am more than a thousand years older than you… still hurts through.” He proceeded to act childish by grabbing onto the hem of Dante's coat.
“You've got to be kidding me” said Dante as he let out an exasperated breath but made no motion releasing himself from Deimos's tight clutch. “Fine” he grumbled “But this means we're even okay?” seriously… a grown man or demon doing such a childish thing, but then again this was Deimos.
“Mmnh!” said Deimos as his spirit instantly perked up, a large content grin on his face seeming to not caring about the fact that were being stared at by the people that passed by. “Neh neh Dante, what are we doing?”
“Pft. Looking for leads of course” he rolled his eyes at such a stupid question.
“And they are?”
“I don't know” Dante frowned while looking around absentmindedly “Right now I'm looking for addicts that might know where to get the drug.”
Deimos bit his lip while looking really, really confused. “Is there even a name for the drug?”
Dante lightened up “Now that I do know, the drug is called `crimson ambrosia'”
“Why why why?” asked Deimos incessantly not unlike a small child.
Annoyed Dante tried to play along. “I don't know” he said using a patronizing teaching voice “This is why we're looking for the leads remember hmm? Remember? The addicts and everything?” he waggled a finger in front of Deimos's face who followed the movement of the finger with his eyes.
Deimos continued to follow the finger like a dog eyeing a bone. “But Dante… Why don't we just look for the richest guy in town?”
“… What do you mean?”
Deimos gave a thoughtful look “Well... he's the only one that's making and manufacturing the drugs ya? Not to mention the fact that he's selling the addicts off as slaves. Shouldn't he be really really rich? I mean with a big house and expensive parties and food… food…” his thoughtful face changed to that of a pleasant face as he began to day dream… about food.
Dante suddenly froze over with an unreadable expression on his face. “I... c-cant believe I didn't think of that myself.” He looked at his hands in disbelief “What's worse is that you with the mentality of a child told me that” he groaned. The world was coming to an end now that Deimos was smarter than him.
Hearing such a negative sound Deimos returned from his dreamland of food and looked at Dante in alarm. “Ah! Don't worry you're still smarter than me okay?”
Dante shot him a dark look “That… doesn't make me any better actually... it just made me feel worse” he let out another groan.
Alarm and at loss of what to do Deimos did the first thing that came to mind. Looking around in a panic he bent over slightly... and kissed Dante on the lips. A gentle, fleeting kiss. Such action worked since gone was the look of despair only to be replaced by slow boiling rage. He knew what was to come bracing himself he waited for the blow. It came crushing down on him in the form of a fist that connected to his face. He fell to the ground in a heap once again only this time he was completely out. In the back of his head he felt himself being dragged along by the collar of his shirt.
“Come on you worthless, idiotic, self centered, immature, thing of a demon! We're going to the tailors” yelled Dante, the red blush still on his face. He didn't notice the sharp look flashed a cross Deimos's face before it changed to that of a content smile.
His beloved master didn't know him at all…
