Chapter Four
“Hey mom,” Janis said into her cell phone.
“Janis! Is the boy awake?”
“He was, yeah. He's been put under for emergency surgery, though. They needed to fix his skull before a chipped edge sliced his brain and caused internal bleeding.”
“What happened? Did he talk at all?”
“Yeah. You guys need to check the vehicle. There's one other person in there, an adult male. Livi—that's the boy's name—said he'd probably be dead, as that was the part that hit first.”
“Alright. Did he give you any other information?”
“The younger girl is named Katiana, I think. The older woman is Alaine, and the man is Crisztopf. He says that they were his family. I don't think he has any surviving relatives.”
“Damn. That means way too much paperwork. Fuckin' government.”
“Mom.”
“Sorry hon.”
“So…what's going to happen to Livi?”
“Once he's released from the hospital, he'll probably get thrown into the foster care system.”
“What? Why can't he stay with us like Bikky did in FAKE?”
“Because that's even more paperwork.”
“But…mom, he knows me now!”
Janis heard a sigh from the other line.
“Janis, sweetie, that's not a reason for him to stay with us.”
“But…what if he only wants to stay with us?”
“Then that's tough pork chops for him, now isn't it?”
“Mo-o-om!”
“Janis…listen, we'll see, all right? Now, we're going to need to get more work done with this information. We also need to bring the bodies to the M.E. to find out the exact cause of death and all that jazz.”
“Alright mom. I'm going back in to see if Livi is finished in surgery.”
“Yep,” a click and a dial tone, and Janis snapped her phone shut. She walked back into the hospital and over to the main desk. The receptionist, who was a young woman in her late twenties, looked up.
“Hello, may I help you?”
“Yes, I came in with Livi Mymick and I'm wondering if you could tell me if he's out of surgery yet.”
“I'd love to, but first I have to know your relationship to Mr. Mymick.”
“Oh, he's my…boyfriend,” Janis said the first thing that came to her mind.
Oh god, I can't believe I said that! Why didn't I say brother…or cousin? Why boyfriend of all things?!
“I'm very sorry, but I can only give information to his direct family members,” the receptionist said, looking truly apologetic.
“They're all dead, though.”
“What?”
“Livi was the only survivor of the accident. I'm all he has left.”
“Ah…well, in that case, I can inform you that the surgery went well and he is resting on the sixth floor. If you would like to go up and see him, then you are welcome to.”
“Thank you very much!” Janis said before walking briskly over to the nearest elevator and heading up to the floor Livi was on.
Janis made it to Livi's room very easily. Apparently the receptionist downstairs had called up about her and the head nurse on the floor guided her to room 629, where a sleeping Livi lay.
Sitting in the chair next to his bed, Janis looked into his face, now peaceful despite the large bruise on his forehead. The hospital had cleaned off the grime and blood, and Janis could see that his skin was indeed a pale blue.
Brushing back his bangs from his face with her small hand, she was shocked by his chilled forehead.
“It's normal for people like me.”
Janis jumped in shock. Livi had woken up and was looking at her with his piercing green eyes.
“What do you mean `people like you'? Are you a vampire or something?”
At this, Livi gave out a snort of laughter.
“As if.”
“Then…wait, you have an accent. Where are you from?”
Livi's eyes widened.
Aw crap…I don't know where I am now and here she wants to know where I'm from. I can't tell her the truth, or she'll think I'm really nutters.
Wracking his brain for a suitable answer, he rested on one.
“Europe.”
“Wow…where in Europe?”
WHAT?! You mean it's NOT a country? Damn it…
“Erm…Mongolia,” he said, eyes questioning if he had gotten the answer right.
“Mongolia is in Asia, Livi,” Janis said. Livi sighed.
I guess I'm going to have to tell her the truth after all.
“Can you keep a secret?” He asked and continued when Janis nodded, “I'm not from Earth. I'm like a little ball of energy from Nitere. That's probably about twenty-three million miles from here, give or take. Also, if I were to ever run out of energy completely, well, it'd be curtains for me. I'd die.”
