[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
This is an original story, the title 'The Mercenary' was thought to be an original one, but if there is an anime or manga with the same name, it is by coincidence. The characters, worlds and situations are also thought to be original as well, but any resemblance is also a coincidence.

MISSION ONE
"Matters into my own hands. Part I"

The silence of space always calmed me. There wasn't any pressure to do what you needed to do. You could just sit and relax, knowing its just you, knowing that nothing can break your train of thought. Its good to hear when you have two bickering roommates that can never seem to agree upon anything. "I swear, June, you can't do anything right!" The assistant captain, Leilene, screeched, "All I ask is that you fix the hole in the wall, and you turn around and break the damned thing. Do you know how much e-currency its going to take to fix a hole that big?!" Its amazing how someone so small and slender can yell and turn into a ten foot monster. She's gorgeous, though. I can see why June deals with her crap, but still. Her blue eyes can be so beautiful, but also deadly. Have you seen her death glare? You don't want to. June however, is this tall muscular guy, with thick black wavey hair. I used to think he was cute, but I soon got over that when I found how much of a prick he can be. "Well, shit! You're saying it like I tried to break it. Look, calm down--" "Don't you tell me to calm down, idiot! All we have is about," she rummaged through her small pouch located on her hip, then looked at a small computer screen, "All we have is about 1,000c's, and that will take 5,000--IF WE'RE LUCKY!" In the year 3095, we use electronic money, used on portable cards, no longer than three inches. On it, it holds electronic coins, or currency. This is our source of revenue.

But there goes my peace and quiet. I knew they couldn't hear me, so I banged on the glass, to catch thier attention. "Rei?! What the--" Leilene pressed the button that has a loud speaker for outside. "What the hell are you doing out there?!" Sometimes I wish we didn't have radio connection in our helmets, I buzz her back. "I'm fixing the ass of the ship since Captain June likes to slap it around." Before she disconnected me, I heard her scream, "June you peice of--" This dent he caused is a lot more complicated than it seems, but I'd much rather be out here risking a radiation blast than being in there. I had to use actual repair lasers to melt this back in place. Even though thats what they are used for, its rare that people actually have use them. It seems like dipshit dented in our jet blaster and wing, it turned to shreds by what ever he hit. So I had to 'unbend' it, then peice it together and weild whatever broken peices together, and hope that it didn't damage any wires, then we'd be screwed. As Leilene said, we are flat broke. No one should be going around breaking stuff, since all we have is ourself to fix it, unless we go to our Mercenary Base. Its home base, basically. Where you get assigned a new rank, for better or worse, get some sleep if you dont know where to go, or if you are in deep shit. However, we're not in the same galaxy as our Mercenary, right now. We can't even perform missions simply because our ship is a peice of shit, and if we damage it anymore, then all our earnings will go right into the ship, delaying us on much needed money. I buzzed in on Leilene, "Do me a favor, and bring me the--" "I'm not in a good mood, Rei!" she snapped back. I don't think she likes me much, she's always been watching me, plotting to get me the hell of thier ship, so I try to get on her good side, but that never helps any. "Captain June, could you bring me the--" "What's wrong with your legs?" I grit my teeth and haul myself from under the ship, and onto the damaged back wing. Ungrateful, sheer disrespect. I work my ass off on this ship; I do thier laundry, make thier food, fix what they break, and all they have to do is treat me like a fellow missionary, but they dont. I put my hand on the scanner and the door slides open. Once inside, I remove my helmet to breathe in some fresh air. Even though the air was clean, the back hall wasnt. Dirt foot prints and smears everywhere. It must have been from our last mission, where we visited planet Xnu. I snatch off the sign I made and crumbled it up. "No need to tell them to keep the area clean." I walk down the hallway, then I was in the main room, where Leilene and June were finally talking like civilized human beings. I go to the storage closet, which also was mysteriously cluttered, and took out the repair box. I felt thier eyes on my back, its juvenile to get angry because they didn't get me a laser, but still, it could have saved me a lot of frustration. "Yes?" I turn around with the box in hand. "Nothing. We can't look at you?" Leilene sassed. Sometimes, I really wish my rank was higher so I can challenge her. The only reason she's even on this ship, is because her and June used to date and he wants her back. So he's kissing her ass, basically. I in the other direction, and just walk past them. "Rei! Rank 87D! You hear me?" My eyes narrow, and I felt one of them twitch. I can fight her, and get thrown off the ship at the nearest rest stop, or I could just accept the fact that she has a higher rank than I. I cant have my own ship because I'm not a high enough rank, I need atlest a 50, in our area of coverage, D. "I slowly walk back to the back hallway, "Sure...." Inside, I was cursing her name with every ounce of anger, before I turn back around, "I'm still repairing the ship. Try to refrain from moving too much or it might backfire."

Three hours and much caffeine later, I finally was done. No mechanic could have done better, if I say so myself. Well, not really, but I was proud. All it needed now was some fresh paint, but in order to do that, we need to go to an oxygen holding base where the paint can dry successfully. Inside, I came in just in time, where our boss, Renkin, was talking on the video screen. "Aah, nice of you to join us, Rei. I was just going to brief you guys on your next mission. We have some bandits wanted for grand theft, these guys have stolen over 400,000c's from the federal government, and they are in your squadron. Take them down, and drop them off anonymously at the police station. They are in a 3089 model utility-type space craft, painted black. So it will be hard to see them. Once reported captured, currency will be delivered to your cards. "General Renkin, sir!" I stand straight, all of them looked at me, "General Renkin, sir...we can not attempt this mission." My stomach tightened when I said this, I knew that they wanted to know why. June looked at me in confusion, and Leilene in anger, "What?!" General Renkin looked at me calmly, "And why is that Rei?" I hold my stance, "Please respect my decision, Captain June, General Renkin, but the rear of the space craft has been damaged severely, and it has just been repaired--" "Don't tell me that crap! Just because you recently finished it doesnt mean we cant use it!" Leilene snapped. I keep my calm and collected voice, "I wasn't talking to you to begin with. And yes...it does mean you cant use it." "Bullshit!" "Alright you guys, cut it out." June butted in. "Please, Rei. Continue." General Renkin says. I do so, "As I stated before, the rear of our ship has been severely damaged and I just finished fixing the assumed problem. We need to let the metal cool, too much maneuvering, and we'll go down quicker than we came in. The risks of that are way too high, and I am not sure if there is any internal problems as well. I fixed what I saw and that was it, due to the lack of mechanic knowledge it is best if we stay inactive until it is safe to assume that we can go back into action." General Renkin looked at June, June looked at me, then at Leilene. She frowned and crossed her arms. Then he looked at me again. "Captain June! What if the metal is--" "We'll do it!" He cut me off. I look at General Renkin, saluted, then went into my room. 'The ship isnt ready...I know it.' I kept thiking to myself. If June fucks this up, we'll need a completely new ship. And that will cost us an easy 20,000c's. That means, I have to put forward some of my currency for the sake of two people who respect no one unless they are an 'acceptable' rank. One day....one day, I'm going to leave. Have my own ship, become a captain...and challenge June to take away his rank and lower it a few spots. I tossed a ball in the air, and just sat there, watching it float. That reminded me of General Renkin, since he's always tossing something. He's really cute, though. He's a young guy, no older than 25, and he's already general. So he must have extreme battle skills. Tanned skin and platinum colored hair, with a slight mustache and a pair of grey eyes to match. I found myself getting all worked up over him, my cheeks were hot, and I found myself smiling. But like most cute, nice, strong men, he's taken. I'm sure. There's no reason why someone like him isn't. I get up and look out the back window in the hallway to look at my handiwork. It was holding together well, but I don't think there was anything more I could do. I could try to melt more, but then it'd just be a big puddle of melted metal and steal, and it'd be impossible to try to hold it in place without it sliding everywhere. We can't do this mission, they have ammunition simply because of the model they have and when someone is wanted for more than 400,000c's, they wont go down without a fight. And I'm not quite ready to die yet, so I have to stop the operation. I have to take things in my own hands.
