Bonds
Kira walked home in a good mood today. School sucked again, but Tom made it better. He turned out to be a great guy. Pity he didn't have a girlfriend. Maybe, she could…
Kira quickly shook her head. “No!” she thought. “I can't date him! That would be too weird!” Kira fought the idea off for a good while and hurried home. In the parking lot, she noticed an old-modeled Mitsubishi. A '74 model to be exact! Kira's eyes grew wide in shock. That meant only one thing. The young Carson Girl ran all the way to her apartment.
Screaming met her at the door. Kira smiled to herself wickedly. “Oh yeah!” she thought. The Carson Girl unlocked the door. She followed the shouting to the kitchen. Cheryl was fighting with an older woman. The older woman looked traditional Japanese. Her dark green and gold kimono surely turned heads. Her black and grey hair looked great pinned up. Her wrinkles gave her a gentle look. Kira watched the two women fight on. They finally looked up at the younger girl.
“Oh hi honey!” Cheryl called. Kira looked at the older woman happily.
“Grandma Fujiko!” she called out. The older woman smiled right at her.
“Kira!” she called. “So good to see my grandchild!” They hugged happily. Cheryl mocked her under her breath and rolled her eyes. You see, she and her mother-in-law didn't get along at all. Never have and never will. Fujiko never liked Cheryl before she married her son. The woman forever blamed his unhappiness on her daughter-in-law. Even after her death they still hated each other. They had their reasons.
“I heard you!” Fujiko snapped at Cheryl.
“Whatever!” the other woman hissed. Fujiko glared at again, but said nothing. Kira smiled to herself wickedly. May the fun begin.
Dinner didn't fail to deliver. All three ate Cheryl's cooking. They had just finished eating.
“That was crap!” Fujiko called. Cheryl glared at her.
“You didn't have to eat!” she hissed.
“I couldn't let Kira suffer alone!” the grandmother replied. The girl tried not to laugh. Cheryl rolled her away again.
“Go stuff yourself!” she snapped. Kira looked at her grandmother confused.
“Grammy,” she spoke up. “What are you doing here?”
“Yes!” Cheryl hissed. “Do tell us why here and when you're leaving!” Fujiko smiled at the girls proudly.
“I got bored with Okinawa,” she answered.
“What?” Cheryl asked aloud.
“I'm moving to Carson City!” the older woman announced. *Cheryl face vaults*
“Where will you live?” Kira asked.
“Here!” Fujiko called out proudly. Cheryl looked up mortified.
“Here?” she asked. “In this apartment?”
“That's right!” the grandmother called. Cheryl screamed out loud. Kira kept her head down to keep from laughing out loud. Oh man! This would be a riot!
Meanwhile, Tom watched the view from his apartment balcony. He had the boredom bug at the moment and couldn't think of anything else to do. The sunset looked beautiful this evening. But, Tom had something else on his mind. He and Kira had gotten closer lately. He would come by her school and pick her up. They would just talk to each other day after day. But nothing happened between them.
Tom found himself beginning to like Kira. She wasn't like the other girls in Carson City. She actually had real dreams in this dump and wanted to escape. Plus, she had brains with her looks. Too bad Kira didn't have a boyfriend. Maybe he could…
Tom pushed that idea out of his head. “Like hell that could happen!” he thought. “We're just friends and that would be creepy!” He finished his cigarette and went inside to have dinner.
At the Watanabe apartment, Kira washed the dishes. She began to think about Tom again. Such a good guy and so single. Maybe he'll find the right person one day. Maybe so would she. But right now all they could so was survive in this fallen city and rise above.
