After the witches and Devlan sorted out the truth from their nightmares, they determined that one of their enemy must have been the cause of it. Devlan suggested that it must be Aisling, because she was a pixie, and pixies were known to use such spells.

“It doesn’t matter which one it was, it just means we have to attack them now. They obviously know where we are so we’ve lost the element of surprise,” Donelle said angrily. “So let’s go.”

“Should we pack up the tents first?” Calder asked.

“No, leave them. We’ll be back later anyway.” Donelle pointed in the direction of the cottage. “Let’s go.”

Calder was walking beside Keelty and she glanced over at him. He met her gaze and grabbed her hand, squeezing it and whispering, too soft for anyone else to hear, “I can’t do this.”

“Me neither,” Keelty whispered back. “I’m tired of killing people for no reason like this.”

“Donelle’s not watching us,” Calder observed. “We could just…leave.”

“You want to take that chance?”

“Yeah, I do.”

Keelty smiled and nodded. “Me too.”

It was about six hours after breakfast when everyone met outside. “Well…should we go to them or wait here for them to come after us?” Nevan asked.

“I’m not sure,” Aisling replied. “We’re not sure they’ll come, anyway.”

“They’d better, within two hours.” Keiran stared worriedly at the sky. “I really want to kill him…”

“Well, Aisling, do you think they’d have gotten over your spell that quickly?” Kael asked.

“Probably. It wasn’t that strong…and I was only able to make it attack the girls.”

“So they’re probably coming here now.”

“Yeah, probably.” She shrugged. “Does it make much difference?”

“It makes a lot of difference. They need to get here before the moon comes out!” Keiran clenched his fists and stared into the forest.

Suddenly the rain turned to a light mist. “Hey, it’s my lucky day,” Kael noted. “Yes! Don‘t start killing witches without me!” He ran inside so that when he transformed he could change clothes in privacy.

“Lucky him,” Keiran mumbled.

“I’d rather you not fight anyway,” Arietta said. “I’d die if you got hurt.”

“Well, I’d die if you got hurt, so either we’re both dead or we’re both unscathed.” Keiran smiled and Arietta smiled back.

“I’d prefer the latter.”

The forest grew silent and everyone grew tense. “They’re coming, then,” Nevan said.

Kael came running out, wielding a sword. “All right, I’m ready!” He handed another sword to Keiran, who held it in front of himself. The others were either going to use magic or, in Nevan’s case, their teeth.

Enya gasped in shock as she realized there was no one behind her. “Donelle!” She shrieked.

“What?”

“Keelty and Calder are gone!”

“Cowards,” Galvin mumbled, gritting his teeth. “I’ll go find them!” He started to run in the direction from which they came, but Donelle stopped them.

“We’ll get them later, and show them what happens when you betray Donelle, the Queen of the World.” She laughed and continued walking. Devlan followed and Galvin chased after them reluctantly.

Devlan pointed to what seemed like a tree directly in front of them. “Look closely. Can you see?”

They all concentrated and Enya cried out.

“Shh,” Galvin told her.

Donelle walked forward, through the tree. Devlan walked beside her. Galvin and Enya nervously followed.

“There they are!” Devlan shouted.

“Just in time.” Keiran smiled and readied himself to attack.

“Don’t attack yet,” Arietta whispered. “They have to attack first.”

“Why?” Aisling asked. “Let’s just attack now.”

“Because they’re the bad guys.”

Donelle leapt forward, chanted a few words rapidly, and sent out a wave of lightning straight for Brighid. Brighid screamed and wrapped herself in a shield.

Nevan was enraged that Donelle picked Brighid for her first target and ran toward her. He flew into the air, avoiding Donelle’s attack, and glided swiftly down to bite her, but was repelled by a shield similar to Brighid’s but much stronger. At this time, Devlan disappeared, but no one noticed at all.

Nevan fell to the ground and was pummeled by not only Donelle’s lightning attacks, but fire from Enya. He was then launched into the air by Galvin and flung back toward his allies, then caught by Brighid.

“Nevan!” She cried, hugging him to her. Noting that he was alive, but severely injured, she stood up and glared at the witches. “Die!” From all sides of the witches came birds. The birds attacked, pecking them all over.

As they screamed and tried to shake the birds away, Aisling laughed. “Serves you right!” She turned to Brighid and smiled. “I never knew you had connections with the birds. You’re more like me than I thought.” She turned away from Brighid and whispered, “Grusi lima pola.” The birds flew away and Galvin and Enya fell to the ground, writhing in pain. They felt as though a thousand fire ants were crawling through their internal organs. Donelle seemed to be unaffected.

She again sent lightning toward Aisling, and Aisling did not put her shield up in time. She was knocked backward into Kael. Kael stood up and charged at the two witches on the ground, killing them, while Arietta looked at Keiran.

“Hishi nora. Don’t hate me,” she whispered. “And I gave Aisling the key. Look for the tree. You’ll find it, it will be glowing. Mirina tulor.”

“What?” Keiran was puzzled. Arietta had a distressed look on her face as she turned to Donelle and shouted, “Tinua mira kala dices!”

Everyone froze. Aisling’s eyes widened and she shouted, “No!” Everyone watched in shock as Donelle fell to the ground, instantly dead.

“You did it, Ariet--!” Brighid said, but she stopped suddenly and put her hand to her mouth.

Arietta was lying face-down on the ground. Keiran ran to her and turned her over. Her eyes were closed. He checked for a pulse, but there was none.

“She’s dead,” Aisling said softly. “She said, ‘With my life as sacrifice, I now end yours.’ I’m so sorry, Keiran…”

Keiran looked up, his eyes brimming with tears, when he saw Devlan standing next to a tree, looking shocked and as upset as he himself was. “She…killed herself…” He ran off into the woods. It was getting dark and the moon was almost out, but Keiran didn’t care. He chased after him.

Devlan ran for about a mile and then stopped. “You’re chasing me, aren’t you, Werecat?”

“I told you I’d kill you.” Keiran stepped toward him, raising his sword into the air. “I only have a few minutes to do it.”

“Then go ahead. You have every reason to. I joined the witches, I helped destroy Chaykeely, and Arietta would be alive ifnot for me.” He looked at Keiran. “So do it.”

Keiran nodded. “I will.” He brought the sword down and, with one swift movement, decapitated the elf prince. He then walked away.

When Keiran got back to the cottage he was already a cat. He walked in and saw Nevan, now conscious, lying on the couch. Brighid was dressing his wounds and he smiled sadly at Keiran as he passed.

Aisling met Keiran in the hallway. “Did she tell you…?”

“Did you know? Did you know she would do this?”

Aisling shook her head. “No. I didn’t. I should have guessed, though.” She looked at him. “She wanted us all to go to Chaykeely and live there. Do you want to do that, or…?”

“She said to look for a glowing tree.”

Aisling cocked her head to the side. “A tree? You mean…?” She smiled. “Oh, it makes sense now! She also told me that about two years after arriving in Chaykeely, a human girl will come to live there as well.”

“What?”

“Two years in Chaykeely is about twenty years in the human realm.”

“So?”

“Faeries are reincarnated.”

“You mean…she’ll be back?”

“She loves you, doesn’t she?” Aisling smiled. “We should go to Chaykeely as soon as possible. Then it won’t seem like such a long time to you.”

“Yeah, you’re right. We should.”
