Section 1: Angry Secretaries with Coffee
The hallways of the Eastern military base were empty with only a few lights on for the remaining guards. Under one of these lights sat a young woman. With subtle circles under her eyes, she scanned over her desk for any possible blemish. None were found. Looking back at the wooden door, the woman signed heavily as she thought of the man shielded from view.
He was working late, later than usual. With great disapproval the secretary polished off her forth cup of coffee of the night. Smoothing out her white dress shirt she scowled at the creases and wrinkles that still adored it. Adjusting her blue skirt, she noticed it was not in any better of a condition than her shirt. Exhaling, she looked up from her now empty mug to the approaching officer.
“Good evening Private Sanders, making your rounds I see.” The woman called out as the officer appeared from the dim corridor.
“It's almost `Good morning' Miss Helen. Is Colonel Edwards still here?” Sanders chuckled causing his grey eyes to crease with his smile as he approached her desk.
“Where else would he be?” The young woman huffed as she leaned back in her chair. “His girlfriend dumped him last week and now he works ungodly hours.”
“And he threatened to fire you if you left before he did again.” With a loud sigh and nod from the secretary the young Private laughed to himself.
“That Colonel is a piece of work. Every time one of his lady friends cuts ties with him he does this to you. He is so unfair to his employees. I swear to you Elyssia, when I become a Colonel I will make sure I work reasonable hours.” Placing a hand over his heart the boy almost radiated determination. Laughing lightly Elyssia looked up at his boyish face.
“I am sure all of your Secretaries will love you for that Mark. But you are still just a kid; you have a long way to go Mister.” Wagging her finger at him playfully, they shared a moment's laughter.
“I'm not a kid anymore, Miss Elyssia, if fact I turn 19 next month.” Jabbing his finger into his chest he boasted with pride, “I am a man.” Laughing, they continued to chat until they heard a loud thud emitting from inside the office.
“I guess Boss finally finished the box of papers I gave him earlier today.” Elyssia mused, as her hazel eyes drifted from the door back to the Private.
“Well then, I guess that is my cue to get back to my route. I would not be much of a guard if I keep getting distracted by every pretty lady I see. Farewell Miss Helen. ” With a wave goodbye he left, leaving her with a reddened face. Shaking her head from side to side, in attempt to clear her mind, her black curls bounced.
“That boy is too bold, saying such a thing to a girl six years his senior.” Although she couldn't say she did not like the attention. Pushing down her blush she looked once again at her empty mug at the corner of her desk. Peering at her small desk clock she knew it was very close to midnight. Good thing tomorrow was the weekend. That would mean she would be able to escape from her night owl boss. Well that is, if he ever let her go home in the first place.
Standing from her desk, she headed over to the door. Knocking twice she was greeted with a weary voice.
“What is it Miss Helen?” he asked with a sharp tone, he was obviously becoming frustrated with all of his work. It would not be long until he stormed out, declaring he was going home for the night. Good.
“Sorry to bother you Colonel but I was about to make another coffee run. Would you like another cup Sir?” She questioned through the door waiting a few moments before a muffled response was given.
“Yes, but put more sugar in it this time.”
“Yes sir.” Twitching for the lack of manners, she turned on her heals and headed down the hallway towards the break room. Approaching the over used and beaten coffee maker Elyssia continued its torment, soon producing two more cups. Murmuring to herself about lack of manners she picked up the sugar container and poured it directly into the cup.
“This will teach him to use proper manners with me,” she paused a moment before adding, “and to not keep me here so late.” She huffed, her hazel orbs watching as the sugar overflowed from the cup onto the counter. Not bothering to stir, she headed back to the office. Only to slow when she heard voices coming from a near by hallway. Going to investigate, she wondered who possible could still be here so late at night. Stopping at the end of the hall she peeked from around the corner.
There stood two massive men in uniform, speaking to a smaller figure. Looking closer she could tell they were speaking to Private Sanders, but something was wrong. The boy was sweating and seemed panicked.
“I'll ask you one last time brat where is Colonel Neal Edwards' office?” The man boomed angrily causing his dragon tattoo to crease with his brow.
“You're…I can't…give you that information—” Sanders stammered in the shadows of the two men.
“Bad answer.” The other man declared pulling out his government issued hand gun.
One shot fired, then two, and then another and another.
The young man fell to the floor with dull eyes, blood pooling underneath him.
With fear grasping at the core of the young secretary she covered her mouth to muffle her terrified shriek. She had to run. She had to get out of there. She had to move.
Frozen in her spot for what seemed like hours Elyssia couldn't do anything but look at what was the young Private. It wasn't until she hear two crashes did she awake from her stupor.
“What was that!?” One of the men bellowed as they looked towards the direction of the sound. Spotting the broken containers, the men stared as the steaming golden-brown liquid flowed into the cracks of the tiled floor.
