Power Trip

“Welcome to Orsonburg Maximum Security Prison.” The police chief said to a crowd of prisoners. “You are all here because you used those powers you got from the meteor for the wrong reason!”

One face in the crowd seemed to be spacing out. It was Arnold Schneider, having a conversation with Magnetrix.

“Stop it!” He said under his breath. “Stop tormenting me!” “We need energy.” A voice in Arnold's head said. “My hunger is growing more and more. I may need to start sucking out too much energy soon.

Bruno Godfrey was in a type of lead casing, so that only his eyes could be seen. “Stupid lead.” He said to himself. “Nullifying my powers.” “That's why we put you in it.” The policeman who moved him around said.

Someone wearing a black ski mask suddenly ran into the room, and slapped Arnold in the face. He then ran up to Bruno, pulled off the metal covering his face, and slapped him. “That was odd.” The chief said.

“I can't believe they're throwing this contest at the mall!” Joey said. A big stage was in the center of the mall, with lots of kids on it reading and practicing different things.

“Yeah.” Johnny said. “The Onan Corp. talent show. Different kids get to compete in different categories and each winner wins: 1,000,000 smackers!”

“We know.” Daryl said. “Why'd you tell us?” “I wasn't telling you.” Johnny said. “I was telling that guy.” He pointed to a hobo sitting on a bench.

A boy with neat black hair walked up to them. He was very scrawny, but no other things that set him apart from the crowds. He wore a leather jacket and blue jeans.

“Hey, you're Oliver White!” Daryl said. “The kid that got sent to juvie when you stole the principle's car and crashed it into the mayor's house.”

Oliver shrugged. “Yeah, that was cool.” He said. He held his hand out to Joey. “Hey, you and me are both in the trivia competition. Good luck!”

Joey shook Oliver's hand. For a brief moment, his eyes turned red. Then Oliver's eyes turned blue. “Good luck!” Oliver said. “Yeah.” Joey said as he rubbed his head. “You too.”

“The first question in the trivia part of our show: What would gravity be like in the center of the earth, if there was no magma?” The announcer asked.

Joey buzzed in. “I know this one!” He said. “It's… um… duh?” “No, I'm sorry. Duh is not the answer.” The announcer said. Oliver buzzed in. “There would be no gravity!” He said. He got a point.

It went that way in the whole game. Oliver was the only one who seemed to know anything. In the end, he'd answered all questions right while everyone else got zero.

Daryl ran up to Joey when it was over and Oliver had won his money. “Joey, what happened?” He asked.

“I…I don't know.” Joey said. “I knew all these things yesterday. Why don't I know them now? Have I changed?”

Daryl looked past Joey and at Oliver. “If so, you're not the only one.” He said. “Didn't Oliver used to be as dumb as a stump?”

Joey nodded. “Yeah.” He said. “Come to think of it, I forgot all this stuff when I shook his hand!”

“This is weird.” He said. “How did it happen?” “When we shook hands I felt weaker.' Joey said. “Like I'd taken a four mile jog!”

“Oliver might have a power that lets him steal people's abilities!” Daryl said. “Why not brains?” Joey said. “Cause he just won the music competition.” Daryl said.

Oliver was holding two giant novelty checks for one million dollars. Johnny ran over to Joey and Daryl.

“Did you see that?” He asked. “He shouldn't have won that! He doesn't know the difference between a whammy bar and an egg roll! Come to think of it, I don't know the difference anymore.”

Daryl nodded. “So Oliver's stealing people's abilities to cheat.” He said. “He's a leech.”

“This is the Chasler Automatic Crime Detection Computer/ Grill.” Paul said as he showed Daryl a large computer with a portable grill on the side.

“It's able to pick up any police frequency.” He continued. “When it picks up info on a crime involving people with those weird powers, it sends the info to you via your communicator!”

“When did you find time to make this?” Daryl asked. “I… don't have a life.” Paul said. “Your mom's the one with a job!”

Daryl suddenly heard a voice in his head. “This is Officer McMusely requesting backup!” The female voice said. “There's someone destroying the Taco Bell on 53rd Oak Street!”

“No!” Daryl screamed. “That Taco Bell's my favorite! I go in there so much they know my usual order!” Daryl's body did its usual transformation into robot mode.

“Bye dad.” Daryl said. “I'll bring you back a burrito.” He ran out the door and flew away towards the Taco Bell. “Don't forget that I like fire hot sauce!” Paul yelled after Daryl.

“Let me guess,” Daryl said when he arrived at the Taco Bell, “you just failed charm school so your taking it out on a fast food joint.”

The criminal was a teenager wearing a black ski mask, a cape, gloves, and sweats.

“Wearing a mask? That's pretty cool. No, wait. I meant pretty lame. You have no imagin—“ Daryl's speech was cut short by a blast of radioactive energy from the criminal's hand.

“Nice shot.” Daryl said. “Let me guess… Biohazard, right? Don't know when you found the spare time to steal his abilities, Oliver.”

The criminal seemed surprised at first, but quickly got over it and pulled off his mask. “Guess you figured it out at the talent show. And don't call me Oliver. My new name's Leech.”

“Obvious.” Daryl said. “Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to get me some payback.” His hands began glowing the usual green as he flew forward and punched Leech in the jaw.

Leech smiled and grabbed hold of Daryl's wrist. “You've really got no brains at all.” He said. Daryl's eyes turned red for a moment followed by Oliver's eyes turning blue.

Daryl suddenly returned to his human form. Leech was covered in a black metal that looked just like Daryl's. He still had his cape, though.

“And here I thought it would be difficult to steal your powers.” Leech said. He threw Daryl into the wall and flew out through the ceiling.

Daryl looked wearily at the guy at the counter. “I'd like a burrito with fire sauce, please.”

“I can't believe I got my powers stolen by an idiot like Oliver!” Daryl said the next day after school. “Hey, he's running on Joey's stolen brain power.” Victoria said.

Joey suddenly ran up to both of them with a piece of paper in his hands. “Guys, you won't believe this!” “You got chest hair?” Daryl guessed.

Joey checked his chest. “No. But now I've got good news! Today, when I took a test for one of my 12th grade classes, I started thinking like myself again!”

Johnny ran up to the three with his guitar. “Johnny!” Joey said. “Guess what.” “Chest hair?” Johnny guessed.

“Joey got his brain power back.” Victoria said. “I wanted to tell him.” Joey said glumly.

“Cool!” Johnny said. “During band practice, I got through a whole song without messing up! Mind you, it was an AC/BC song.”

“So Oliver—I mean Leech's power drains are only temporary. When I get my powers back, I can go after him again.” Daryl said. “I think that I've got a way to help.” Joey said with a grin.

Leech walked into the closed Orsonburg Museum like he owned the place. But he didn't, so two security guards jumped in front of him and pointed their guns at him.

Leech raised his hand and killed both of the guards with blasts of radioactive energy. “Please, don't get up on my account. I don't mean to be rude, just here to rob you blind.”

Daryl laughed. “Jeez, if you think that isn't rude I can tell why you got sent to juvie.” He turned his body into robot mode when Leech turned around.

“Hey! How'd you get your powers back?” Leech asked. “I thought I kept them forever!”

“Reports of that matter have been greatly exaggerated.” Daryl said. “And, on a more serious note—“ He flew towards Leech and punched him in the jaw.

“Okay, so you've got your powers.” Leech said. “But so do I!” His body became covered in the familiar metal as everything inside him became robotic.

“That's what I hoped you'd do.” Daryl said. The black nanobots moved to his hand and created something like a joy-buzzer. “Next time, don't be so obvious.”

He slapped the hand with the joy-buzzer on Leech's back. Electricity began covering Leech and his body returned to normal. Then, he passed out.

“The Anti-Buzzer.” Daryl said. “Guaranteed to nullify any powers given by the Solomon Asteroid. Courtesy of my dad and Joey.”

Sirens began wailing in the distance. “Got to go!” Daryl said. “Don't want to overstay my super-heroics!” He ran off through a back door.

“You're going to do a long time in jail!” The cop said to Leech at prison. Leech sighed. He tried to get out of the straightjacket they'd put him in to nullify his powers but he couldn't. Then he thought of something.

“Hey, is this straightjacket shock proof?” He asked. The guard shook his head and Leech smiled. As the guard took him to his cell, there was the sound of electricity crackling and a scream from the guard.

A few moments later, Leech ran out of the prison without a straightjacket. Following him was every criminal in the prison.
