"Why the fuck is it so dark out here?"
"I...I don't know. It's like all the street lights from here in have burned out. It's really odd."
"Odd? It's fucking creepy."
The smaller and thinner of the two grin and looked at his friend out of the corner of his eye.
"You aren't scared of the dark are you?"
"Shh."
"Please, are yo-"
"Will you shut the fuck up?" The taller and broader of the two hissed.
The smaller one stopped and looked back at his friend, who had paused just past an alley and was peeking into it.
"What's up?"
"I think something's happening in there."
"Something like....that!"
The smaller fellow leaned under his friend and looked into the alleyway. At the end a large figure was cowering over a much smaller one. The smaller form was pressed against the chain link fence looking nothing more than a dog that had been kicked too many times.
The larger man withdrew his head from the alley and leaned back against the wall. He closed his eyes for a moment while he tapped the back of his skull against the wall. Each time he tapped it harder and harder until the smaller man looked back to see what the sound was.
"Jesus Mike, what the hell are you doing?"
"Thinking..."
"You need to pound your head like that? You could knock yourself out doing stupid things like that."
Mike turned his head toward his friend and grinned. Though his lips curved his eyes remained hard. Mike hadn't smiled in joy since...
Mike slipped a hand into hit pocket and pulled out a pack of Marlboro Light's long since used to the vulgar taste that lights had compared to the strong stuff. He flicked the cheap lighter he had bought with the smokes a few times before it caught. Mike puffed a few times and looked over at his friend.
"Sel," Mike said between drags of his cigarette, "That's him."
"Him who?" Sel frowned in thought.
"It's Sam."
The tip of the cigarette flared as Mike took another drag, the light momentarily illuminating Sel's face, which had gone ashen.
"We have to go. That's why it's so dark here. This is his home, we can't win, we need to run."
Mike ignored Sel's ramblings for a few moments as he finished one cigarette and used the still glowing butt to light another.
"Sel..." Mike spoke softly, his inflection on the name cutting off Sel's rant.
"Yea?" Sel said after a moment's silence.
"What are we gonna run for? This is why we're here isn't it? To stop him."
"Well sure, but I thought we'd find the others. I mean we can't..."
Mike raised a hand to silence him.
"Sel, we don't even know if the others made it here alive. For all we know they could be dead."
"But."
"Shut up and listen for once. Even if they aren't, this is a chance we can't let slide. We need to confront him now. See if he's up to strength. There's no sense in running away now and coming back later to have our asses handed to us. Besides...."
Mike crushed the cigarette against the wall snuffing out the last of the light.
"There's two of us."
Sel stared at his shoes for a moment before looking up and nodding.
"Sorry Mike, I guess I panicked."
Mike laughed softly and slapped a hand to his friend's back.
"Not a problem my man. Just don't wet yourself."
Sel grinned uneasily.
"Now let's go talk to Sam."
The too men turned into the alley and walked forth with purpose. With remorse, Sel noted that the person that had been trembling was dead. It looked to be a girl, but in the dim light of the overcast sky he couldn't be sure.
Within a few steps they reached the larger figure. A figure larger than Mike. That alone made Sel swallow and wish he had taken the chance to run. Instead he stood at Mike's side and waited.
Mike didn't say anything either, simply waiting for Sam to turn around. And eventually he did. Sam turned and looked down at the two men, a glint in his eyes as he buckled his belt and zipped up the fly.
Sel's eyes darted back to the still form on the ground. It wasn't a girl. It was a small boy, no more then twelve. But he was still fully clothed. So what had...
The clouds overhead parted for a moment, splashing silver light over the corpse's face. Sel stared into the boy's eyes in abject horror and the empty sockets stared back at him, the blood pooling behind the boy's head leaked through the hole in the back of his skull..The empty sockets stared, almost accusing Sel of letting such a horrible thing happen.
Sel turned and vomited even though he had not eaten in days. The sound of retching and splashing the only thing in the night.
Sam grinned as he watched Sel empty his stomach before looking at Mike.
"It seems that your friend doesn't share my taste in sexual pleasures. Too bad, I've found the eyes do more then look pretty. I've found the sockets to be rather....tight, if you understand?"
Mike's body was torn between hitting the bastard or running away screaming. The pounding in his head from whamming it against the wall wasn't helping. Neither was the feeling of a warm liquid trickling down the back of his neck. Odds were he'd cracked his skull…again. He eventually settled on insulting Sam before the blood loss weakened him.
"Congrats Sam, you skull fucked a twelve year old. I bet you feel big now."
"Now now, there's no need to be so vulgar Michael. Besides, I did so much more than just 'skull fuck' him, as you put it. Would you like me to list what I did? Some of them are positively delicious. Much like his eyes were."
Sam grinned as Mike stumbled backwards and clasped a hand over his stomach.
"No? Well then I suppose I'll just have to be off then. Nice seeing you Michael, you too Selaphiel."
With this Sam pushed past the two men and walked out of the alley and back onto the street. He turned right and moved away leaving Sam and Mike dazed. The fight hadn't gone past words and both of the men were worn out.
"Jesus," Sel whispered.
"Don't bother, he hasn't answered us before, what makes you think he'll answer now?"
"But he didn't even move Mike. He just stood there and talked."
"I know. We're fucked Sel. I don't think it'll be enough to find the others. We're royally fucked."
"I thought you said we could handle him."
"I lied."
