Aya stood up, as the bell was about to ring to note the last period of the day. This is how she wanted to be. This is how she lived every day. Blending in. Hoping that no one would give her a moment's glance. The school was full of people who were too into themselves to actually care about school. She was the outcast. This is where she had to go. She didn't belong.
So the bell rung its nauseating beep, then they all stood up, clutching their designer bags and their books to rush out the door. Laughing and gossiping, all of them. It made her sick. It made her not even want to belong. She was always the last to leave. She gathered her books and her pencils to put them into her bag. She zipped it and stood up. And at the door, was a boy, tall and slender. Messy hair, which was a burnt orange. He was leaned against the window sill, reading a book. She wondered, what's his name? I've never seen him before. Then he looked up at Aya who quickly looked away and rushed out into the hallway.
He watched her hurry out the door, and smiled.
She ran home, as it was getting colder and colder with evening coming. Her feet tapped against the ground as she shuffled home. She kept looking at the dark gray sidewalk, listening to the pitter-patter of her own feet. Mom will be horrified if I'm late for-
her thought was interrupted by-
It's that boy. She was paralyzed for a moment, and then the boy stood up and offered her a hand. She unwillingly took it, and they both picked up her belongings.
She trembled and said, "Thank you very much." And with that, she turned and began walking home again.
"Wait!" The call froze Aya in her tracks. She slowly turned around.
"Yes?" She smiled.
"Akemi. That's my name."
"I didn't ask-"
"I saw it in your eyes."
"Well, goodbye, Akemi-san." And she turned around and left.
Akemi shoved his hands in his pockets and stood around for a while. He whistled a song, a song that his parents used to sing to him while he was a child. While he still had them. What am I doing? I've got to get home. He was about to walk until-
Oh. That girl dropped something. He reached down to pick it up. It was a piece of paper, with "Hurry home, it's important" written on it in neat script. He folded it and put it in his pocket. Smiling, he walked home.

Aya took her belongings and rushed out the door. With the usual "i'mlatemombye" sentence, she ran out the door and into the cold winter morning. She quickly wrapped her scarf around her neck and hurried to school. She watched the frost crack beneath her feat.
Her thoughts traced back to yesterday. What a rude boy. Telling me to stop while-
She saw him again. On the corner, waiting for the light to turn green.
Aya walked over to him, tapped him on the shoulder and waited for him to turn around.
And when he did, she said "Aya." He made a confused face. "You told me your name yesterday, so I'm telling you mine." She smiled and ran off. "Ja!"
He stood there until the light turned red again.

"You're late."
Aya looked at him, giving him a confused look.
"How'd you get here so fast?"
"I have a car."
She scowled at him. "And besides, since when did you go here?"
"Since yesterday. I didn't bother the teacher to introduce me to the class, like those horrifyingly unbelievable books say."
"You followed me home."
"We merely bumped into each other."
She sighed, and sat down in her seat. Akemi grinned and sat down next to her.
"Let's cut class."
"What?!"
"C'mon. The teacher's not even here, and half the time, she doesn't even take attendence." He smirked. "Unless... you've never cut before?"
"Well, I'm a perfectly respectable student. Why would I cut?"
"For the hell of it. C'mon, it'll be fun. Take the rest of the day off, and you'll fake a note tomorrow."
Aya had no choice but to go along with it, because she knew he was going to bother her all day if she didn't.
They went to a park near the school, and they were walking when Akemi said, "I like you, Aya. As corny as it sounds-"
"Eh?" was her first reaction.
"You know why? Because you're nothing like the girls at school, or even in the world. You're one of a kind, and I know that, even though I just met you."
She blushed a furious shade of red and didn't say anything.
"Aya."
"Hmm?"
"Look at me."
And as she did, he leaned into to place his lips gently on hers. He wrapped his arms around her and embraced her escence.
As they broke the kiss, Aya turned away.
"What's the matter?" He looked concerned. "Is it because you already have a guy? If you tell me that, I'll leave you alone from now on."
"It's not that."
"What, then?"
"I've just never... been with a guy. And especially not a guy like you."
"Oh. No worries, then. We'll take it at your own pace. That is, if you accept me."
She smiled. "Akemi. I barely know you. You follow me everywhere, bother me about everything-"
His face expression dropped.
"But for some reason, I feel like I can totally relate to you in a whole different way."
He smiled. "I'll take that as a yes," he said, as he leaned in for the second kiss.
