Laughter.
The sound of her laughter made his spirit soar. Watching here there, so comfortable in plain tennis clothes and laughing with her close friends, made him smile inside and out. There was a pink tinge on her cheeks as she spotted him from across the gym, staring at her. She smiled back at her friends and left them to join him on the bench.
You're giving me
too many things, lately
too many things, lately
His own face went pink when she kissed his cheek in greeting, and he tried to keep his gaze from roving her short skirt. It would lead his gaze to the skin on her thighs, which would make him want to touch them, which would see his hand up her skirt, which would have them fucking against the wall in the change room. There would definitely be none of that.
“Poor baby, your face is still a little bruised,” she said cutely, running her fingers lightly over the marks her father had left on him. She sighed at the memory.
“You ok?” He turned his head and kissed her palm.
“Dad went crazy. I...I'm not allowed to see you anymore Sato...” She looked down, her hand still caressing his face.
You're all I need,
“He's trying to protect you.”
“I know that, but...oh, Sato, I don't know what I would do without you-” He tilted her chin up with his index finger and sealed her lips with his.
Life had been hectic since the incident several days ago in the park. Rei was absolutely forbidden from seeing the boy she loved, and now they could only steal glances and short moments of intimacy at school, which were very rare because of the difference in their age. Satoru was in his final year at school, and Rei was still a junior. Even now they were lucky that both their classes were sharing the gym. He pulled his lips from hers, depression creeping in.
“We can get through this,” He tried a smile. “I just need to get him to like me.”
“'Toru, he'll hate you forever for what he saw you doing to me.” She accused him, a smile dancing in her eyes.
“We weren't even doing it...”
“No, you were just inside me when he found us.” Her lips cracked into a grin. His heart warmed. She had no regrets about them.
You smiled at me, and said:
Don't get me wrong, I love you,
but does that mean I have to meet your father?
Don't get me wrong, I love you,
but does that mean I have to meet your father?
“And now I can't even touch you...” His voice was suddenly low, a hoarse whisper, “It's killing me so bad to see you running around in that damn skirt.” She leaned into him, her lips ghosting his ear.
“You should feel how wet you've made me, staring at me like that.” She felt triumph when he shuddered and noticed his hands balled into fists on his lap, clenching and unclenching.
“Don't play with me, little girl.”
“I want you to play with me...”
“Rei!” A whistle blew, shrill and piercing from the other side of the court. “Would you care to join the class?!” Rei frowned and felt sorry for her boyfriend when she saw the lump in his loose P.E. shorts.
“I have to go,” She hesitantly moved to stand and stopped when she felt and iron grip on her wrist.
“You're killing me, little girl.” He gazed at her through his dark bangs, deep blue eyes glinting.
“Satoru...you know it's hurting me just as much...” She leaned in again, breathing on his neck. “I would give anything to have you inside me right now...”
When we are older you'll understand
what I meant when I said;
no, I don't think life is quite that simple
what I meant when I said;
no, I don't think life is quite that simple
The whistle blew again, spearing through the air and reaching the couple, splitting them apart. Rei pulled back with a sorry expression and mouthed `I love you' to her boyfriend. He almost snarled at her and mouthed back, `You owe me'. She felt his burning gaze at her back as she jogged to her class, intentionally letting the skirt sway just that little bit higher. You really owe me.
He sighed and slapped his knees lightly as he got up. He took a moment to take in all of his surroundings, letting the thought of leaving the place soon sink in. High school would be over. He sucked in a breath and tried to freshen the murky pain in his chest. Leaving. Leaving his house, his school, his city, his Rei.
When you walk away,
you don't hear me say:
Please, oh baby, don't go
you don't hear me say:
Please, oh baby, don't go
He knew she felt it too; the subject loomed over their heads like a dark stratus. He would go off to the prestigious university he had been accepted into, and she would stay in high school. His heart tore in two at the image of them being pulled apart. Everything was pulling them apart. The school, her parents, and now, hundreds of miles. `You're too young to understand love', `It's not healthy to be so serious when you're this young'. They were given so many reasons not to be together, and only one stood up against them.
They were in love.
Simple and clean
is the way that you're making me feel tonight,
it's hard to let it go
is the way that you're making me feel tonight,
it's hard to let it go
It was something so strong, but so simple. Nothing else mattered. If he didn't have Rei, he didn't have anything or anyone to keep the insistent aching in his chest at bay. He knew the pain was hard on her, too, and loved her even more for putting up with it. He understood that it pained her to see him sad and have nothing to do about it. But now, he was leaving. It was something he had to do. He had been thinking on it for months, and come to the conclusion that he would just beg Rei to wait for him to return, to keep her heart only for him. Could he really ask her to do that? What if...?
What if.
What if she stopped loving him? What if the feelings just faded with time, like everyone says it does? What if she found someone else to love? What if she found someone better?
What if we were just never meant to be?
He shuddered at the sudden cold, not so unusual for him, who could freeze under the sun in the middle of the day. He needed her to be there to warm him up. All he needed was her smile. He decided he would ask her- beg her- to wait for him. He knew it would mean she was sacrificing her youth, all chances at knowing another man. He would understand if she said no. He just couldn't bring himself to imagine the feeling after he heard it.
The daily things,
that keep us all busy,
that keep us all busy,
He would just have to do what his father did when things got tough; he would just have to kill himself. He was set to leave in a few days. She didn't talk about it, but he knew she wanted it to be special. That was why she had agreed to meet him in the park, why she agreed to let him touch her like that. Why she touched him back.
Were we destined to be together?
Or were we destined to be together, just to be torn apart?
You're all I need,
*
“Where are you taking me?”
He held onto her for support, the blindfold rendering his vision pitch black. His remaining senses heightened. The night air was fresh in his lungs, the sweet smell of Rei in his nose, the crunching sound of grass beneath their feet in his ears.
“Shh, we're nearly there.”
“How the hell did you get your dad to let you out of the house?”
“Forget about him. It's just us tonight.”
You smiled at me, and said:
Wish I could prove I love you,
but does that mean I have to walk on water?
Wish I could prove I love you,
but does that mean I have to walk on water?
They kept walking in, what he surmised to be, a lightly wooded area. What is it with this girl and nature? He wanted his last night with her to last forever, but he had a plane to catch at 2 am. They still hadn't talked about his departure, or their future. His mind filled again with doubts and he lost the courage to ask her what he had been meaning to for months. He was pulled from his thoughts when he bumped into her, not expecting the abrupt stop.
“Here.” She said, excited and nervous all at once. She pulled off his blindfold and he was met with a beautiful vision.
It was... serene. She had pitched a make-shift tent out of soft, translucent material and had laid out a plush quilt scattered with fluffy pillows. The hues of blue and the soft light from a few candles gave the scene a peaceful, romantic hum. His eyes softened and he looked at her, every profound feeling in the world welling up in his heart. She looked back at him with teary eyes and a soft smile, took his hand and led him down to the comfortable ground.
When we are older you'll understand,
it's enough when I say so
and maybe, some things are that simple
it's enough when I say so
and maybe, some things are that simple
“You did all this?” She nodded, smiling at his expression of wonder. “When? How?”
“I was here all afternoon while you were finishing at school,” She lay down, urging him to lie with her. “Do you like it?”
“Yeah. It feels so soft...this is nice.”
“I wanted tonight to be special for you, Satoru.” The looming conversation hung over their heads again. It was now or never. He kissed her lips with as much passion he could muster and hugged her tightly to his body.
“Rei...”
They lay down for a long while, utterly comfortable and relaxing in each others loving embrace. Their minds swam with images of loneliness in the near future, a life without the one in their arms. What was the thing with lovebirds, again? They can't live without the other. Long distance relationships don't last. It's a known fact. Rei faintly recalled something her grandmother had said to her before she died. True love means you can live and be happy without your other.
When you walk away,
you don't hear me say:
Please, oh baby, don't go
you don't hear me say:
Please, oh baby, don't go
“I don't want you to leave!” The flood gates were open, the dark cloud finally raining down on them. She whimpered and nuzzled his chest, bringing her body as close to his as it would get. “I love you so much!” He swallowed the painful lump in his throat and let her cry against him, running his hands up and down her back.
“God, Rei...I...I...” He couldn't get it out. He wanted her to be able to enjoy her life, be free. He couldn't bring himself to ask her to block out happiness while he was off studying and getting invited to frat parties.
“I want to come with you,” It was a low whisper; she knew as well as he that it wasn't going to happen.
“Rei...” Now or never, Satoru. “Will you...would you wait for me to come back?”
There was silence.
Simple and clean is the way that
you're making my feel, tonight,
it's hard to let it go
you're making my feel, tonight,
it's hard to let it go
“Sato...I would wait a thousand years for you.” He let his own tears escape and he crushed her to his body. “Promise me...promise me that you won't forget.”
“Forget?”
“Please don't forget me...”
“Rei, I could never forget you. I could never stop loving you.” He knew it sounded stupid, but it illustrated very well how he felt. “Wait for me.”
“Forever. For you.” Just like in a fairy tale.
He smashed his lips onto hers and poured his soul into making love to every part of her under the stars that night. Their clothes were discarded in an instant, they had gotten very good at haste, and hands roamed everywhere over bare bodies. Satoru pulled away from the kiss, and before Rei could complain, he had his lips on every sensitive spot on her body, for what seemed to be all at once. She threw her head back and gripped his hair. He really was trying to take it slow, to make the moment last, and would have been successful if he wasn't right about to explode all over her stomach. He took a deep breath to calm himself and concentrated on her pleasure.
Hold me;
whatever lies beyond this morning
is a little later on
whatever lies beyond this morning
is a little later on
But she didn't want any foreplay. She mustered the will to pull his head away when he buried it in her wet crotch and coaxed him up toward her. They were breathing heavily, having gotten aroused too rapidly in the short amount of time. Her thighs slid along the outside of his hips and they lay there for a while, scrambling for a grasp on control. He hung his head and rested his face between her breasts. She heard his muffled voice, his breath tickling the sensitive skin.
“I'm going to miss this.” She cradled him to her body, fitting him snugly between her arms and legs. She rotated her hips lightly and he let out a primitive grunt. “Jesus Christ, I'm going to miss this.” They stayed still, enjoying the breeze against their skin, cooling the sweat until her voice broke the peace.
“Sato?”
“Mm?” He didn't bother to lift his head.
“Are you going to fuck me soon, of should I just put my clothes back on?” He chuckled darkly against her tits, sending a shiver down her spine. He was inside of her in an instant, her head flung back and her back arched impossibly.
He wasted no time letting her adjust. The young lovers' cries filled the silent woods, their perspiration heavy in the air. They were too desperate to take it slow, too dedicated to imprinting themselves permanently on the other. They called out each other's names at their climax, collapsing in a heap of limbs and moisture.
The candles had long since gone out as they lay there, like that had so many times, side by side under the stars afterwards. His left hand was in her right, their fingers interlaced loosely.
Regardless of warnings,

“Two years.” He sighed. It would be two years before he could move back and continue his degree in Tokyo, two years before she graduated high school. Two years apart from the person you love the most.
“That's such a long time...”
“Mm. Am I worth the wait?” He looked puzzled when she laughed.
“Yes, you're worth the wait. Definitely.” He knew she was troubled inside. She knew he was troubled inside. He would be going to drunken parties, and she would be a single, beautiful girl amongst hormone-enraged high school boys. “Just...don't go falling for a pretty, smart college girl...”
“They'll all pale in comparison to you.” She blushed, what a corny line. “As long as you don't let any of those boys take advantage of you.” They shared a light laugh. “B-but, I mean, if it makes you happy you could-” She silenced him with a small punch to his chest. He was always trying to give her space, a way out of the relationship; she just wished he would be more possessive sometimes, hold her closer when other boys were around. She knew it sounded shallow and self-centered, but she just wanted to belong to him. Then she remembered he was leaving and her spirit sunk into the lush ground beneath them.
Simple and clean is the way that
you're making me feel, tonight,
it's hard to let it go
you're making me feel, tonight,
it's hard to let it go
“You should get going. Your plane leaves in an hour.”
“The plane can wait.”
She smiled up at him, warming him to the core, all of the troubles of his past disappearing in that moment. His father hadn't commit suicide, his mother's heart was no longer hollow, and he himself hadn't even inherited the depression in the first place. Everything was perfect.
But that plane was leaving in an hour.
“I promise, when you come back from school, I'll have graduated with honors, just for you. Try your best too, ok?” Her voice sounded so cute, and her words filled his heart with pride and his eyes with tears. He hugged her naked body to his again and buried in face by her neck. “I love you no matter what.”
“Oh, Rei...” Something was welling up inside, something profound; it got bigger, and bigger. He didn't know what it was; it scared the shit out of him. He could feel it creeping up his throat, filling his mouth, determined to make him explode if it didn't get out. His insides welled up, pushing it along, the rapid beating of his heart jolting it into his mouth. And then it burst forth, straight from his heart;
Hold me;
whatever lies beyond this morning
is a little later on
whatever lies beyond this morning
is a little later on
“Marry me, Rei!?”
He heard her gasp and felt her heart beating faster in her chest. He moved to look down at her, absolutely terrified. She opened her mouth to speak and everything inside him shut down completely for those long few seconds.
“I..,” She searched his eyes for her own answer. “Yes, I will marry you, Akaba Satoru.”
He hugged her to him again like a child, happiness bursting from every pore. They were meant to be together! He had known it all along!
Just like a fairy tale!
Regardless of warnings,
the future doesn't scare me at all,
nothing's like before.
the future doesn't scare me at all,
nothing's like before.

Two years later, at Rei's graduation ceremony, she surprised the whole crowd when she suddenly burst into happy tears on the stage while accepting her awards. She had spotted a pair of loving blue eyes in the back of the audience that she hadn't seen for a long while. Satoru proposed to her properly that night following the festivities for the graduates, and they did end up together, much to her father's resentment, and to everyone who had truly believed that they were just not meant to be. How wrong the couple had proven them. They had a beautiful wedding, a magical first dance to their choice of the Goo Goo Dolls song, Iris, and promises for a bright future full of smiles.
And they lived happily ever after.
Just like in the fairy tales.
