Chapter one “Rescue?”

The sounds of running could be heard in a deep dark forest. The figure that was running was a girl of 18 with a modest sized body and height underneath a dark blue t-shirt and jeans that were covered in mud as well as her light blue sneakers. “Someone help me!!” she called out loudly. Her dark blue eyes were filled with worry as her long brown hair that came to her hips flowed behind her.

She was unaware that something watched her from a cliff side. The figure could see figures that stood 3 to 3-1/2 feet tall and were dark green in color. “Goblins,” the figure murmured in a male voice. The figure followed swiftly and got ahead of the girl determining where the girl would go. He leapt down to the forest floor just as the girl turned to run right where he knew she would.

The girl glanced behind her as she ran, but bumped into a figure. She landed on her butt and glanced up to see what she ran into. She tensed when she saw black colored combat style boots. Her eyes then drifted upwards to see dark colored pants that looked like they had been made out of the midnight sky, a muscle shirt, which clung to the person's body so she was able to see a strong and muscular chest with fine abs, and a long and black colored cloak that flared out near the figures boots. She soon came to the figure's face; he had dark green eyes that looked down at her with sternness and coldness and his dark red hair, which looked messy, came to an inch under his shoulder blades. His skin was a peach color much like her own. She then noticed two other features she overlooked. First he had pointed ears and claw like marks on his left cheek, like tribal markings slightly. “A demon,” the girl said in fear, but then glanced in fear behind her as two goblins caught up to her and saw the demon before her.

“That human is ours Judai,” one goblin said.

“Leave now scum,” the other goblin said.

The demon, Judai, just snorted and drew a sword from a sheath that was at his side that the human girl just noticed now. With one swift slash he beheaded the two goblins as more goblins came around the corner to see Judai do it. The goblins charged at Judai and the human girl, but Judai lunged forward lifting the girl to her feet before wrapping his arm around her as black feathery wings appeared from Judai's back under his cape. “Hold on tight,” he told her as his wings flapped and he takes to the air as the girl holds tight to his waist. Soon he landed back on the cliff he had been watching her on and dropped her unceremoniously on the ground.

“Ow!” the girl exclaimed as she rubbed her butt. She glared up at him as her hair fell around her. “What was that for?” she demanded.

“I do not need to explain myself to a human girl,” Judai said.

“My name is Amber,” she said as she got back to her feet, “Thanks for saving me.”

He grunted. “You humans are so weak to let weak goblins like them capture you.”

Amber puffed. “Says you.”

“Follow me. I'll take you to a safe place,” Judai told her as he began to walk away. `And I can get you out of my hair so I don't have do deal with any problems,' he thought to himself as Amber followed him. She was unsure why she thought to follow him, but he did save her so he must be good.

They walked on through the woods and Amber glanced around looking at everything. That was when she noticed a strange thing lying on the ground unmoving. “What's that?” she asked moving towards it, but then Judai's arm appeared in her way blocking her.

“We should move on. It could be a trap,” he said plainly wanting nothing more then to go.

“Can we just check?” she asked him. He gave her a cold look. “You can make sure it's not a trap and I'll be slightly behind you. Okay?”

He scoffed, but went to examine the area around the thing with Amber right behind him stepping wherever he stepped. “Its safe,” he stated after a few seconds and then Amber went over closer to the thing.

She bent down and picked it up revealing it to be a sort of creature. It had a body like that of a stuffed bear yet it was black with a gray tummy and scaled wings that were on the smaller side which would at least give it some flight at least. “What is it?” Amber asked.

“A demon sprite,” Judai said, “They are similar to your fairies in your stories yet demon sprites are a bit darker. As you can tell they are animals with scaled wings.”

Just then the demon sprite began to awaken opening its dark red eyes to find itself in Amber's arms. It shrieked slightly and quickly flew up into a hole in a tree. “Wait! We don't want to hurt you!” Amber said calling out to it.

The demon sprite peeked out and gazed at the duo. Judai was unentertained by this and gazed around behind them. “You really won't hurt me?” the sprite asked in a child like male voice. Amber nodded and the sprite flew right into her arms like a scared young child would do.

Judai snorted as Amber cuddled the sprite in her arms. “What's your name?” Amber asked the sprite.

“My name is Eike,” he answered smiling up at her.

“I'm Amber and this is Judai. Do you want to come with us Eike?” Amber asked him.

“Can I?” Eike asked as wide eyes.

“No,” Judai said sternly. Amber looked at him and he was looking at them coldly.

“Why not?” Amber asked, “He's small and won't be a bother. He'll stay with me right Eike?” Eike nodded enthusiastically.

Judai grunted. “Do what you like,” he said then turned to walk away.

Amber followed behind him as Eike sat perched on her shoulder. “He's not that friendly is he?” Eike asked.

“It would seem that way, but I think all demons are that way,” Amber said.

“Not all demons are cold or evil as you humans on the Human Side are to believe,” Eike stated.

“Human Side?” Amber asked confused.

Eike nodded at Judai. “Didn't he tell you?” Amber shook her head. “Right now you are on the Demon Side where we, demons, and demonic like creatures live,” Eike began to explain.

“Like Goblins?” Amber asked.

“Yeah. You had a run in with some?” Eike questioned.

“Yeah, but Judai rescued me from them although I think he didn't want to,” Amber said as she glanced at Judai who kept his back to them as they walked, but unknown to them he was listening to their conversation.

“Anyway, you, humans, live on the Human Side. Both sides are separated from each other by a barrier, but some parts of the barrier are weak meaning that sometimes demons and humans can cross the barrier,” Eike went on to explain.

“So why was I brought here?” Amber asked.

“Probably to become someone's slave,” Judai said surprising both of them.

“So what do we do?” Amber asked slightly scared after that answer.

“We find you a place where you can stay,” Judai said.

Eike fluttered over to float before Judai. “Wouldn't it be better to find a way to send her through the barrier?” he asked. Judai growled threateningly at Eike who shrieked in shock and bolted back to Amber's arms quivering in fear.

“That wasn't nice,” Amber told Judai as she glared at him yet he scoffed and kept going straight ahead.

"The weak points in the barrier are harder to find then anyone believes," Judai said, "The biggest point is the one controlled the Dark King."

"Dark King?" Amber asked confused.

"A very bad demon who rules a lot of the area we're in right now. Nobody really likes him, but if anyone tries to rise against him, he destroys them without a second thought," Eike told her sadly, "He's killed so many already."

“Do you know of another weak point?” Amber asked Judai.

“Nope, but someone in the town coming up might,” Judai stated.

“All right,” Amber said as she continued to follow Judai.

Judai glanced back at Amber as she chatted with Eike on something. `Why did I save her? I should've left her so why?' He shook his head clearing it as they came upon a town.

As they walked through the town Eike and Amber glanced around at it. The other demons in the town looked up and seemed to stare at Amber. 'Okay not getting a good feeling from this town,' Amber thought as she stayed close to Judai.

Soon Judai had all three checked into a rundown looking tavern, which looked like it came right out of a medieval storybook. "We're staying here for the night," Judai told them.

"Wouldn't it be better out in the forest?" Amber asked as they headed for their room, which turned out to be small and looking like it was about ready to fall apart.

"Not really," Eike said, "Anything can sneak up on you in the forest."

"While here there are only two ways. Window and door," Judai said coldly as he sat himself proudly in the chair that was in the room. He placed his sword beside him.

"I guess that leaves me the bed," Amber said as she went to sit on it.

“Get some sleep. You'll need it,” Judai told her as he shut his to take a nap.

Amber shrugged and lay down on the bed to sleep. Eike fluttered over and joined her on the bed falling asleep along with Amber. Awhile-later Eike awoke and to his shock found Judai gone. “Amber! Amber! Wake up!” he said shaking her awake, “Judai's gone!”

Amber shot awake and saw he was gone. “Maybe he stepped out for a second?” Amber said as she sat up.

"But his sword is missing too! He would leave it if he was coming back!" Eike wailed.

“Then let's go look for him,” Amber said as she headed for the door. Eike landed on her shoulder.

Suddenly Amber stopped. “What's wrong?” Eike asked.

“Quiet and listen,” Amber told him quietly.

Eike quieted down and listened. “That human upstairs will make a nice slave,” a male voice said.

“And with that demon gone she and that sprite are easy to capture,” a female voice said in reply.

Both Eike and Amber looked at each other. “They'll try to get us if we leave this room by the door,” Amber said.

“Window then?” Eike asked and Amber nodded.

They moved to the window and opened it. The bad part was that they were on the second floor. “This is going to be tricky,” Amber murmured.

“Are you going to be able to climb down?” Eike asked her.

“I'm going to have to try,” Amber said as she glanced around outside the window to something to help her down. She wasn't going to trust the blankets on the bed; they looked ready to rip at any second.

“How are you going to get down?” Eike asked.

Amber then spotted a drainpipe leading to the ground. “I'm gonna shimmy down the drainpipe,” Amber said as she climbed out the window to it.

“Are you sure that's a good idea?” Eike questioned.

“I've done it at home before,” Amber answered. `Although I wasn't running from anything back there,' she thought to herself as she began to slide down the pipe. When she was half way down to the ground Eike shut the window to the room so the demons wouldn't know how they got out without being seen. When her feet touched the ground they heard a strange hiss from the room. “They know we're gone. Time to bolt,” Amber told Eike. He nodded and the duo raced away into the woods behind the building.

“Where do we go?” Eike questioned her with worry in his voice.

“Anywhere, but back to town,” Amber told him as they slowly moved through the woods, but still at a quick pace.

“Find them!!” a demonic voice cried out from somewhere behind them.

Eike shrieked slightly and zoomed to Amber's left shoulder trembling slightly. “Come on Eike. We need to be strong. Right now you're the only one who knows this land and can help me,” Amber told him.

Eike got a determined face as he fluttered off of Amber's shoulder. “Right. Follow me,” he told her as he lead her deeper into the woods. Amber followed him glancing around the woods keeping her ears and eyes opened for anything.

"I have their scent! Follow me!" another demonic voice near to them cried out. Not wasting a second Amber grabbed Eike and ran for everything she was worth.

'Why did I trust Judai? He's just a big jerk!' Amber thought fiercely as she ran. She skidded to a stop upon seeing that they had come upon a cliff face, which she realized was to sheer to even attempt to climb up it. `This is not good.'

Eike fluttered out of Amber's arms, fluttering around nervously. “This is bad,” he said.

“Not if you come quietly,” a demonic female voice said. Both turned to see just about the whole town behind them with nets and the like to capture them.

“Leave Amber alone!” Eike said as he flew at the lead demons only to be smacked away like a fly and slam into a tree.

“Eike!” Amber cried out. She wanted to go to his side, but if she turned her back on the mob they would come at her. She was pissed. First she got captured by goblins, then saved by the arrogant Judai, left behind by the same demon who saved her, chased through the woods, cornered before a cliff face, and now Eike hurt for trying to defend her. “Why can't you all just leave me alone!!” she cried out loudly and angrily closing her eyes tightly. For some reason she felt this strange sensation like something was sent out of her and towards the mob. She opened her eyes to see the mob had been pushed back a few feet and were also knocked to the ground. A wave of dizziness hit her and she fell to her knees with one hand on her forehead while the other tried to prevent her from hitting the ground. `What in the world?'

“Amber! Come on! We have to go before they get back up,” Eike said as he fluttered over to her.

“Too…dizzy,” she murmured to him trying to stand up to walk, but her body wouldn't allow her to.

Suddenly in a flurry of black feathers a male figure stood before the dizzy Amber and Eike as the mob came towards the two. “You will not harm her or the sprite,” a pissed male voice said.

Amber glanced up to see Judai before her. “Judai?” she asked as he bent down to pick her up bridal style in his arms. Eike flew onto his left shoulder as he spread his black wings and took to the air. “Why did you leave and why are you back?” she asked after he had been flying for a while.

“I went to locate a friend who I heard was in town and I came back to get you and the sprite only to find you both gone from the room. We'll talk more later. For now sleep I do believe that took some out of you,” Judai said as Amber's eyelids grew heavy. Amber allowed herself to fall asleep as Judai continued to fly on towards the mountains.

Too be continued…
