Entry the First
Alex sighed and set his head down. First day back and notes already. Charlie looked just as thrilled. Alex started scribbling things down in his notebook, feeling his usually slightly sleepy. Charlie was in a good mood so far that day, he was taking notes too. The teach had just switched to a new slide, when the projector turned off. She went to reboot it, when they lights followed. All the power to the school suddenly shut off. Then the ground rumbled, shook, and roared. Some of the girls screamed. At least, he assumed it was the girls.
Teach was trying to get everyone to calm down. More shakes, then it went silent. In the dark, the class sat with bated breath. Then, shouts, and roars, and what sounded like weapon's fire split the silence.
I looked over at Charlie, a question in my eyes. He shook his head. He didn't recognize the guns from the sound of the shots, if those were even guns we heard. I had just turned to look at the wall, beyond which came the shots, when the wall exploded inwards, over by the teacher's desk. A huge body came flying in with it. It was scaly and had a huge long tail.
While nearly everyone else was jumping back and the girls were screaming, I got up for a better look, feeling as though whatever it was, it was oddly familiar. Charlie was just laughing about how he had known the world was going to go to shit. It, the repitian thing, was breathing heavily, it had some kind of weird… spear sticking out of its chest, with a huge chunk torn out of its side. Something that looked oddly like the hilt of a certain object which projects a blade of light that can cut anything, lay next to it.
It was seeming more and more familiar to me. The shape, form, the fact that I was a huge reptile that appeared to be fully sentient(it was trying to talk to me…) finally made me take a guess, which oddly discluded the strange object lying next to it. “Are you a Reptildra?”
It laughed. It freakin laughed. Most bonechilling sound I'd ever heard. “His sis sis sis sis sis sis… *hack* COUGH! So you actually know what I am? Spectacular! COUGH! Do you know about the or *hack* COUGH COUGH COUGH *cough up blood*…”
“The orders? Greater dragon, lesser dragon, raptor, serpent, greater reptile, lesser reptile, amphibian? Your from the order of the Greater Dragon, aren't you?”
“I am the High Guardian, and yes, I am of that order. COUGH!” He tried to look at me, and suddenly he was staring in what must have been his equivalent of wide eyed surprise at my hand. “That ring. That ring… I see, perhaps… COUGH… this is a sign. Take my blade. You are High Guardian now. My men are fighting now, we can't last long. You must defend your people now.” He actually reached his hand up and placed the thing in my open palm, then it fell down, and didn't move. No breath was coming from his body. I just sat through this in awestruck, dumbstruck, fascination and horror. Just then…
“High Guar… “ Another of the Reptildra appeared at the opening. He saw what was in my hand, and for a moment, a great cloud of anger crossed his reptilian face. But he too saw my ring, my dumb ordinary class ring, which wasn't all that special, and it passed. He bowed. He freakin bowed! “I see. We shall push them back away from the schools, and attempt to send those still living from the surrounding neighborhoods here. All we can give you is time. Make use of it.” He vanished.
At this point I finally became aware of what was happening behind me, with the rest of the class. Charlie grabbed me by the shoulder and pulled me up. “Come on, they're taking everyone to the gym.” I nodded. As I was about to follow Charlie out the door, we being the last left in the room, I heard a roar, a loud, close, roar. I turned, and and saw a huge reptilian something, vaguely resembling an alligator with much too long limbs, charging for the hole in the wall. It smashed aside one of the Reptildra that fired at it and tried to block its way. My mind suddenly raced. Don't let it enter, must stop it, will kill everyone. “No one else dies. Gotta stop it.” Those two phrases escaped my lips as I envisioned a barrier over the hold, which would hold back the creature. To my utter horror, delight, and surprise, that is exactly what I got. A… field of something, which was visible as a pale yellow window in the exact shape of the opening, coving the whole thing. I could see through it almost perfectly, but everything had a slight yellow tint to it.
I could only stare, as Charlie could, as the thing charged straight for the opening. It collided with the barrier, stopping it in its tracks. I felt like somebody had just punched my in the arm or something, or at least I got that much more tired, but in my whole body. There wasn't any pain though.
Almost immediately, it seemed that the creature must have been set upon by the Reptildras, because some kind of weird energy blasts, and earthen spikes, started blasting into it. I closed my eyes and looked away before I could see its brains blown out. To this day, I don't know if Charlie did the same. “I can't believe it worked.”
“What worked?”
“My barrier, I willed a barrier into place, and it worked.”
“What are you talking about? There was nothing there. It just stopped up short.”
“You couldn't see it?”
“See what?”
“NVM”
As Charlie and I walked into the gym, I remembered the object clutched in my hand. Looking at it, I realized it could be clipped to my belt, so I did. We walked into the gym, which was in chaos, and sat in our customary spot with the rest of the club. I sat with my back to the railing, silent and thinking. Charlie seemed to be talking very animatedly to the others. Now, looking back, I think he was telling the others what had happened. They gave me queer looks, so I can only conclude he included the little discussion at the end too.
The Principal was trying very hard to be heard, while the teachers tried to get order out of the chaos. Everyone was talking, yelling, crying, whispering, and generally freaking out. It was reaching a crescendo. I clenched my fists, then relaxed them. I never did realize it at the time, but I had dried and caked Reptildra blood on my hands, and probably some on my knees too. Apparently it gave me quite the appearance.
At this point, one could probably have heard the ruckus from the next county. Which is when I stood up. I walked down the steps, past the teachers, and over to where the Principle was standing. I pulled the blade off my belt, and activated it. Almost instantly there was a fantastic lull in the noise, and everyone got quiet very quickly. I never had that happen to me before, so it felt kinda nice to be noticed. I switched it off, with all eyes pointing at me, and said. “No one is going to die. Is that clear? No one. You are going to get out of this, you are going to be alive, you are going to be safe. And you are going to get back to everyone on the outside too.”
Somebody, I think it was a freshman, asked, “What the hell is going on?”
“Reptilian monsters have arrived in the city, and so have beings called Reptildras. The latter are on our side, for the most part.” One of the teachers tapped me on the shoulder.
“What are you doing? You're going to scare everyone to death.”
“Their already scared out of their wits. Right now, the best thing to do is to give them the truth. If we can't trust each other, and if they can't face reality, this is gonna be short.” I turned back to them all. “The creatures that aren't on our side, well, they're monstrous, dangerous, and apparently somewhat intelligent. How do I know? I saw one, and it charged straight for the hole in the wall, looking for blood, or just a way in.” I paused to look at the sea of faces. Charlie I sought out, he had a very serious face on. The teachers had all stepped down and back, all eyes were on me.
“What we need is action, so that is what we will do.” I looked at Charlie again. He nodded. “Charlie is the only other person I know to have seen the creatures. He is taking a groups of ten out to ascertain the current situation outside, and gather up the weapons of the fallen Reptildras. Thus we will be able to defend ourselves. I want volunteers only.” I got ten almost immediately. Ryan and Kevin both volunteered, I got a junior and a sophomore, Joe and Nick, the rest were seniors. Surprisingly, one of the girls volunteered. Charlie led them out before a teacher could stop them, but one followed them. “Charlie! I'm following you out, hold up!” they did.
“I can only assume we have teachers watching the doors, so we will at least know if anything tries to come in. we're safe for long enough. I need another group of volunteers. Go through the school, check everywhere for anything we can use for defense or barricades. Another group needs to check food, and store it.”
I looked at the staff from the little school lunch café. “I need simple good lunches for everyone out of whatever we have. Use everything that can go bad fast first. No chips.” The nodded.
“Everyone else stays here for now. Interior weapons search, volunteers please. Ten of you.”
I got my volunteers, and they split up, a teacher accompanying them to look for weapons. I turned to Mr. Mac, who was also the robotics team coordinator. “Get the robot out please. We might be able to use it. At least we can mount cameras or something on the vex units.”
I followed Charlie out, leaving him in the lead. I just stayed close with hand on my blade. I was the only one with a powerful weapon, thus far. We moved past the teacher on watch, who didn't even try to stop us. Possible the serious set of our faces. Charlie motioned the others to stay back as he checked out the door. Nothing living he could see. We all crept outside. The Croc thing was still where it lay, and right about then we heard a scream from its general vicinity. I was the third one there. One of the girls who volunteered was looking in at the death High Guardian and the monster.
“Crap.” I slapped my hand to my forehead in frustration, then suddenly laughed when I realized my field was still there. That, of course, got me a weird look from the others. I went over and knocked on it, then put my palm on it and leaned. They eyed me with blank looks and astonished looks. I looked at it, and wondered how to dispel it. I decided to will it to not be there. It vanished. As I was still leaning, I fell over. I got up and dusted myself off. I looked up and saw that it was Maddy.
“Don't be scared of him. He's safe, considering he's no longer among the living. Just keep moving.” She nodded, resolve showing on her face, and moved back to the hall. I stepped back out, and then willed the field back into place. Charlie had already found another body, and was examining the strange weapon he'd found with it. Two knives were on the ground at his feet.
“not sure why he needed the knives, his tail spikes and claws were probably just as sharp. As for this,” here he held up the gun. “This is some kind of energy gun, kinda reminds me of a crossbow. Not entirely sure how it works, but I think I can figure out the firing mechanism. Appears to be solar powered too.” He aimed it at a tree across the street, which I finally observed was nothing but completely wrecked houses, not burnt, just wrecked. He fired. A wide beam of energy blasted out, and hit the house and tree, but house more than tree. “no kick, but the beam widens and loses accuracy as it travels. Interesting. Come one, the other Reptildras should have more of these. Grab the knives too.”
Charlie had walked about two steps when a roar echoed through us and a… Raptor… came charging at us. Charlie pointed and pulled the trigger, but the shot didn't hit the target. The thing dodged.
“Charlie get back!” I charged forward as Charlie jumped back and tried to aim for a second shot. I activated my blade, having no real idea if I could do anything, when a shot impacted the raptor from the side. A Reptildra came charging towards us, and fired another shot. The others mostly scrambled for cover. Charlie took another step back, aimed, and fired. This time he hit it. Another shot from the Reptildra and the raptor went down. Acting without really thinking, I ran at it, and impaled its head with my blade. Then I saw the tail swinging for me. “Oh shit…” I swung my blade up and actually sliced through the tail, but this time with a measure of resistance.
The Reptildra stepped up and looked at me. I looked back, and recognized it. “you're the one from before…”
“I am the Master Guardian of the order of Serpents, Slanetly. You bear that ring, and now the Blade of the high Guardian. I feel you have no idea of the honor you hold. You were given that blade by the former High Guardian?”
I could only nod.
“I see you are gathering the weapons of my fallen comrades.”
“We need a way to defend ourselves, and you have weapons. The High Guardian's body is still inside the school, where those things won't get to it for now. It would have taken too much effort to worry about the bodies of your comrades until we had secured our position.”
“I will assist you in securing it. I request you help me take care of my comrades bodies afterwards.”
“I will. But in that, I can speak only for myself.”
Sam stepped out. “I'll help too.”
Eagle and Anthony also volunteered.
Charlie turned to go look for more weapons. “come one. We'll tag their bodies so we can find them later while we get some arms for ourselves. We aren't safe out here. And they have nothing except some barricades in there to defend them. The faster we finish, the better.”
“Hey Cha… Tarius!” I shouted at him.
He looked at me and grinned. “yeah?”
“Nice shooting.”
