PROLOGUE
It was a simple time, when people worked the land for food and payed tribute to their respective rulers. When the young dreamt of grand adventures and making history. It was a time when the great plains of Thuron saw peace. Dralgo, the largest city in all of Thuron. They say that when it was being built, they had so many skilled people to help they decided to move the city furthur North, so it was surrounded by tall, beautiful mountains on one side and a wide ocean on the other. Once every few years the king would hold tournaments to appease the small villages who felt like they were nothing more than dirt on the shoes of the rich. Warriors from far and wide came to these competitions to show their skills and prove their worth to the world. A warriors haven. The next largest city that was founded went by the name of Zocun. Zocun was more of a trade center than a city. Merchants from all over came with their wares to sell to the highest bidder in hopes of making their lives easier, better, more fulfilling. It was a came to be known as Traders Paradise. The last kingdom to finalize its borders, Kushu was known as the City of Colors. Its main source of entertainment encircled the artists. Every year they held the Festival of Senses. It was a grand event that contained so many attractions that excited every sense in your body. There were many small villages scattered about the land but if nothing important was passing through they fell through the pages of history. Soon afterward a terrible war erupted and tore the land apart. Men changed, people were killed, and futures were no more. When it seemed like nothing could stop the war from swallowing the land whole, a group of strangers came together, they combined their skills and were victorious. The war ended soon after and peace returned. But when the people wanted to congratulate them they were nowhere to be found. They vanished, along with the terror that had plagued them.
CHAPTER 1
Almost twenty years after the Great Divide, now just a memory in the minds of the old. We come to a small village, at the break of dawn.
"Kitan, come on, we have to be there before the sun comes up, remember? The Master is going to be furious and we both know who she will take it out on" yelled Gnal from the outside of the house.
Gnal Dragnil. A gifted youth able to use his spear Kiguchu to a point, and none were better than him. He and Kitan Namathorn live in the small village of Kushu. they were both nineteen years old. Kitan lived with Gnal along with his little sister and mother. they both lost their father during the Great Divide, when Kitan's mother heard her husband had died, like the love bird who has lost its mate just stopped wanting to live, no matter how hard Kitan tried.
"Heh, yes we do and when she tries to 'punish us' by forcing me to spar with her and get the snot beat out of me then it will be her turn to be amazed. I haven't been sitting on my rear all winter, I have been training with my swords Hirohira and Byarin. I will be ready for The Master this time" Kitan said with a wry smile on his face.
"yeah thats what you said the last eighteen times that we were late for practice. It will be the nineteenth time too if you don't hurry up!" Gnal replied yelling from outside
Kitan was another youth like Gnal, but he chose to train in the art of the dual blades. The two of them were inseperable, since they were young they had sparred together, laughed together, and knew each of the others every move, feint, and every thought that crossed their minds when they were at the practice yard with their master. Together they were most reputable as the 'Kushu strife bringers'.
"Alright I'm ready, here I come." Kitan said finally after a brief silence then Kitan himself jumped through the window in the attic. Doing a front flip in the air and landed softly on the ground behind Gnal.
"Show off. Whatever, lets go already" he said rolling his eyes.
The two of them ran off towards the practice grounds as the sun rose in the distance. When the two of them finally got to there Master Tin Dall was giving a demonstration with one of his older students. they tried to be sneaky as they sunk into the background of the other students but to no avail.
"Kitan, Gnal" The Master said as she easily dodged her students thrust "how many times is this today?" she continued parrying the horizontal slash at her waist and following it up with a smack to his head and dropping to trip him when she rose she was facing them.
"We are sorry master but heh you know Kitan always-"
Not waiting for Gnal to finish she jumped into the air and slashed downward forcing themto jump to either side of her. they dodged just in time because when the cloud of dirt passed the hole that was caused by it would have seriously injured them or worse. they knew she was serious this time.
"Such talent" she said looking towards the sky, hair waving behind her as a gust of cool air blew past them. Master Tin Dall was one of the most respected elders in the village. Thanks to her strategic actions the village of Kushu had sustained minimal damage during the Great Divide. For being one of the eldest people in the village she moved like she was no older than the two of them. "If you would only train the mind as you train the body, and not be late when I announce a special training excercise for you students then maybe, maybe you would surpass me and one day take over in protecting the people and this village."she said finally looking towards Gnal.
"I will be generous to you today, as I know you were" she smiled then "coerced into being late for todays lesson." she turned to look at Kitan "If either of you can land a blow OR unarm me, then I will give that person a special one on one lesson that I know both of you are dying to undertake"
the two of them took out their weapons and smiled at each other Kitan held up Hirohira towards Master Tin Dall "you're going to regret that Master."
"Talk is cheap" she said getting into her ready stance "actions speak louder than words. Come."
With that the two of them launched themselves at her with all their force. She parried both Gnal and Kitans attempt, even Byarin was parried as he had tried to strike her in both her shoulder and calf. She pushed them away from her and struck out at gnal. he dodged and parried her wooden sword but it seemed it was all he could do because she was not giving him a chance to find an opening in her stance. Kitan then lunged into the fray by cross slashing her when she kicked Gnal away. She side stepped and, using her elbow, elbowed him in the side and punched him in the gut. Gnal then thrust his spear at her stopping her sword from hitting Kitan in the head as she had done to her other student. Gnal continued to attack her as Kitan, finally able to breathe again, came up from behind her and put her in an armlock. Gnal then knocked her sword out of her hands but it was too late. as soon as she lost her sword, she broke the lock and grabbed Gnal's spear and pushed the butt of it back into his forehead. still facing Gnal she wrapped her arms around Kitan's Waist and jumped backwards so that Kitan was what she landed on. When she got back up to her feet she surveyed the gruesome scene she had caused. Gnal was on the floor unconscious with blood coming down his forehead and his face. Kitan was also unconscious but less bloody. with that last ditch attempt she had probably broken a couple ribs and maybe bruised his side pretty bad, and yet, she was impressed, together they had overcame her strength and unarmed her and land a blow as she looked down at her arm as she had small gash trickling a couple droplets of her own blood. These two, they have much potential. If only they would be listen to my teachings and not always resort to me pounding it into them. Thats probably why they have so much to live for. She thought to herself.
"When they come to, tell them to meet me by the waterfall outside of the village." She said to no one in particular. "If they cry then tell them I will pound the tears back into them."
Near noon the two of them came to. Kitan trying to get out of bed winced in pain as he felt his ribs. Gnal had let out a small 'Damn. That hurts!' as the nurse tried to remove the eight stitches their master had inflicted upon him. Kitan slowly got up and peered outside the window. He didn't see smoke coming from Master Tin Dall's chimney so he looked over at Gnal.
"Hey Gnal, where is the master?"
"How the heck should I know? I blacked out when she countered my thrust with that cheap move. When I see her again I'll be ready next time" he replied holding up a fist.
One of the master's other students walked in a few minutes later looking for them
"heh so you're finally awake. Man you two just never learn. Oh, she gave us a message to deliver, she said to meet her at the old waterfall outside of the village. If you're not their by sunset then you'll miss out on a chance to get her back. Its not like you'd be able to beat her no mater how many times you tried." with that he said goodbye to the nurse and left the building. Kitan looked outside again at the sun, it was just above the mountain in the distance.
"You think we can make it in time?" Gnal said as he felt again at his forehead "I can make it, but with your injuries I might have to carry you some of the way. So what do ya say?"
Kitan felt his side and examined his ribs. just the bottom two he thought to himself. Wait, he examined a little higher. Damn she somehow skipped a rib and bruised the two above it. Thats not good, if a 'special training' meant a`sparring match then he wouldn't last five seconds with her. On the other hand it would help him become stronger for when he finally went out into the world to experience all that it has to offer, like his father when he was his age.
"Yeah, lets get some medicine and apply it on the way to the waterfall" Kitan said waving the nurse away. they got their things together and got some ointments and bandages and were off. Gnal ended up carrying the gear. He insisted that Kitan was in no condition to run but Kitan just smiled through the pain and said it was no big deal. The sun was halfway behind the mountain when they finally reached the bottom of the path leading to the waterfall.
"Lets rest here" Gnal said putting their bags down and took the clean bandages out and threw it at Kitan. "here put this on. Those you have on must be dirty with the blood you've been leaking out."
Kitan sighed and removed his shirt and looked down at his side. Gnal was right, he was bleeding, it wasn't bad but if he went any longer without clean bandages it would get infected. Once they had rested a bit and changed his bandages they set off up the trail. As they came upon the waterfall Kitan looked over at the sun, with just the tip of its curved surface above the top of the mountain, they had made it in time. The one time they make it on time and its at their worst condition.
"Ok, if the master tries anything try not to push yourself, we don't want you to open that wound on your side any more than it already is" Gnal said as they grew closer to Master Tin Dall."
Kitan unconsciously felt his side and moved his hand away when he realized he did it.
"You just worry about yourself, and let me deal with my injury" He replied
"heh always the warrior who wont show his weakness to others" then he said something under his breath that he couldn't hear clearly.
"I am glad that you are on time" She said turning around to face them. The two of them had come to just with fifteen feet from their master when she examined them. "Kitan have you heard of the special attributes of the water that flows from here?" He shook his head
"there is a story that is passed down to the children of our village" she turned around and faced the waterfall once again "when our village had first been founded, a woman with great power used her power not for wealth or fame, but for the sick, the young, and the elderly. When the Great Divide happened she and a small group of strangers banded together. They grew as close as a family and overcame their weaknesses and brought peace to the land." She turned around to face them once again "when she returned to share the wonderful news with the other villagers she suffered a severe wound to her side in an ambush by your run of the mill bandits. Using the last of her strength she prayed, she prayed that the people she tried to protect in this land we work be protected then they say it started to rain and its said her prayer changed the rain. Since then the water has run underground to our well and has kept us from harm as she did when she alive. Kitan you are also wounded from..well I'll be blunt, me. Come here, remove your shirt and your bandages, you do have bandages on the wound do you not?" He pulled his shirt up and proved he did "I want you to wash your wound in the waterfall that will give me some time to get you and gnal situated here in my cabin, Gnal this way."
she gestured for him to follow and headed for the cabin. Kitan waited for her to enter the house before he began fully removing his shirt and bandage. he cautiously put his hand in the water falling from the cliffside and had his mind somewhat put at ease, it felt like regular water. he then cupped his hands together and drank some. It tasted like the regular water you'd find in our well he thought. Kitan then took a deep breath and submersed himself in the water. He waited a few moments and stepped out of the water. As he walked towards the cabin he must have tripped one of her traps because a log tied to a rope with small jegged edges dropped out of a tree on both sides of him and swung towards him. He instinctively drew his blades and blocked the logs by cross slashing the logs with his blades and backfliped backwards. The trap was overcome easily and when he landed he was breathing calmly. remembering about his side, he reached down to his side and felt it. What he saw was what shocked him more than falling into a simple trap for intruders. He was not bleeding, and the pain he felt in his ribs were gone. He looked up and saw his master staring out the window at him, they locked gazes for a few seconds then she returned to helping Gnal unpack their things. Did she know about the water? When did she find out about this place? It was a place not reached easily because of the steep side of the mountain and many pit falls caused by the Great Divide. Most importantly what he wanted to know was what they were going to be doing up here with nobody else? There were too many questions that needed to be answered, that made him uneasy about being here. He looked around and felt like someone was watching him and decided to go into the cabin. Too many questions.
