“Subject 6446886, you will follow me now.” The scientist said.
“Yes, sir.” I replied, then continued, “May I ask what the tests will be today?”
“The tests will consume of an examination, endurance, strength, hearing, sight, smell, intelligence, elemental…, and a battle.”
“A battle?” I asked confused, “What good does a battle do? I have never fought in my life. I am too `precious' of a specimen to fight, at least that's what you all say.”
“The battle will be for analyzation purposes.”
“Okay, thank you, Sir.” I walked behind him to get a better survey of my surroundings. Though I knew what it all looked like. It was just nice to get out of my room. I walked into the room and thought, `What was fighting going to be like?' as I stood in the center of the room. There were a few doctors in the room. As I walked toward them I heard the door close.
“Strip.” I heard the one to my right. I took off my clothes and waited for them to finish conducting their stupid tests. I felt a prick on my arm and noticed them injecting some fluid into my system. Then all I felt was pure agony and everything went dark.
I felt different. I tried to scratch an itch on my arm, but felt a searing pain. When I looked at my hands I saw that I had claws and down my arm was blood from where I had cut myself. Four long straight cuts were there. I sighed as I reached for my shirt. Using the newly found claws I cut strips from the shirt and started wrapping it around my arm tightly.
“What did they do to me?” I asked out loud not really expecting an answer. The problem was that one came.
`They injected you with something that changed your DNA.'
“Where are you?” I said as I looked around to find the room empty.
`Here.' The scenery changed suddenly. It was as if the room faded into something I had never seen before. It was nothing I had ever seen before. There was a breeze that didn't change the temperature, but I could feel it brushing against my body. I could feel me standing on something that formed around my feet which turned out to be sand. There was a large body of water… Well, I guessed it was water except it was pure black. There was a dense forest just across the water with part of it burning but never moving further into the forest. There was a large quantity of metal just scattered everywhere. There was a moon and a sun in the sky with clouds going in every direction. Then I noticed him standing in front of me. He looked exactly like me except for his clothes and tattoos. Black spiky hair, black eyes, tan skin, and claws. His clothes were white and the tattoos were the same as mine Fire on the right side of his neck, wind on the left, and I was willing to bet that he had shadow on his back, the only difference was his were black while mine were red.
“Who are you?” I asked not liking him one bit.
“I am you.” Was all that came out of his mouth.
“Where are we?”
“We are here.”
“Where is here?”
“Here is earth. The true earth that has granted our powers.”
“What powers? Do you mean elementals?”
“Yes…”
“Why are you apart from me?”
“Time to go back.”
“Subject 6446886 please wake up.” A scientist said shaking me as I opened my eyes, then continued, “Now that you're up stand in the center of the room and wait.”
I waited for the announcement to come. `5… 4… 3… 2… 1… now!' I counted off in my head and as soon as I had thought `now” the intercom said, “Subject 6446886, also know as Vahn, please head to the treadmill and begin the endurance test.” I headed to the designated area and stepped on at which point it started at about six miles an hour. I started a light walk and waited for it to increase in speed. `6 miles an hour how slow do they think I am?' Once I had finished that thought the speed had increased to about twelve M.P.H. and started steadily rising, '13… 14… 15… 16… 17… heh they're stopping here probably. Wait a moment! 18… 19… 20… How fast do they think can I run? What is this? Crap, I can barely keep up. At least I am not tired.' I noticed they had stopped at 20. Like they knew I was just keeping at that speed. They kept me running for about thirty minutes and started to slow down. `Finally!' I thought.
“Vahn you have five minutes to rest before the next test.” I heard over the intercom. `Well this is new. I thought they were just going to keep me moving like they usually do.' I thought as I sat down on the floor. I thought about things that have changed. `Well, I have claws now and I have a voice in my head. I wonder what it was that they injected me with. Well it can't be good, that's for sure. Probably something that will put me to rest, being I couldn't kill myself.' I thought as I remembered all the times I had cut myself after stealing razors from a few scientists that liked me. They always seemed to have them. The rest of the scientists didn't carry them. `Oh well, if they accomplish what I couldn't then it will be for the better.'
“Vahn please head over to the push board.” The voice on the intercom said. The push board was a large rectangular object embedded into the wall that determines my strength by how hard I push it. I headed over to it and stood there waiting for their equipment to get ready. “Vahn start pushing as hard as you can.” I pushed it hard, but not as hard as I could. When I had figured out what they were doing, I only pushed it as hard as I wanted out of the fear that they would think that I was getting to powerful. They kept watch on my strength and speed. I have always made it seem like I was just meeting their expectations. I kept pushing until it reached about 250 lbs. and stopped and started to make my arms shake.
“That's enough Vahn. You will now begin your hearing test. There will be sound coming from the walls please point to the direction of the noise and hold it for five seconds.” They kept this going trying all different ranges of taps on the walls and I just kept pointing till I got tired of it and pointed in the wrong direction.
“You will now begin your sight test. There will be objects in the room placed next door,” I looked to the right to find the door there and the intercom continued, “In that room you will need to find a blue sheet of paper, paper clips, a black book, white shoes, and a red envelope. Please start.” I opened the room to find with out the lights on. Stepping in with the door closing behind me, I started searching the room. Blue paper on the desk, paperclips in side a box next to the desk, white shoes in the closet, black book on the shelf, and the red envelope under a few objects on the table. I went out the same door I came in with all of the objects. I looked under the clock just under ten minutes. `Wow, that was quick,' I thought. I took a deep breath a noticed a different smell was in here than there was before, but I just waited for them to start the next test. I already knew where the object was that they had placed. “Vahn, please start smelling for the object placed in the room.” Was all the intercom had said sounding kind of irritated.
I started walking around the room sniffing in the air until I `found' the object which was just a candle. After I picked it up I noticed it said cinnamon spice on it. Liking the smell I kept a hold of it and walked back to the center of the room. I waited till the intercom started speaking again.
“Vahn please head to the next room again to begin your test.”
“Can I keep the candle?” I asked not really sure if they would let me keep it.
“Yes.” Was all that was said after I waited a few seconds. I headed to the next room and calmly sat at the desk. Where I noticed a small stack of paper was sitting. I waited till I was told to begin, and then started the first section. Math. I kept going for a few minutes till I reached a point to where I was told to stop. Then there was Reading and finally English.
`God all this stuff just gets more boring.' I thought as I entered the same room I started in from the beginning. I knew that the element part was going to be hard, because while I knew what to do it was always hard to control its power. I started without them telling me to, because quite frankly I was irritated by the voice over the intercom. I didn't know who it was, but for some reason the voice always sounded familiar to me yet I am quite sure I never met the person in real life. I started by controlling my breathing and making sure I was standing straight with my hands extended to the side a little, then as I took a deep breath a flame started to flow around me. As I moved my hands the flame started to move at toward where my hand was going. A few beads of sweat were at the top of my eyebrows when I had finished.
`Now for the wind' I waited for a couple moments, because I knew it would take a little time for my body to get ready for the next exercise. Keeping my hands ready I moved into a slightly different stance. I moved my right foot forward with my left slightly bent to keep balance. I raised my hands to where my right was over my right foot, and my left was directly behind me in a slight crescent arch. Then I started moving my left hand forward and back, until there was a small spiral of wind going on my hand. I moved my right hand back, and my left foot forward. Then I started to slowly spin in a right direction. As I spun faster, so did the wind. Suddenly, I stopped, but the wind kept spinning around me. It kept getting faster and faster. I felt myself being slowly lifted off the ground. I was raised about two feet off the ground, and I could feel myself sweating, but I loved the feeling of being in the air to much to care.
I was concentrating hard on the feeling when a drop that fell into my eye distracted me. After that I was flung out of the mini-tornado right into the wall. I was hurting badly, but didn't show any pain. I got up and stood in the center of the room waiting for them to try to tell me how to control the shadows this time. `Ouch, my back is killing me, but the feeling of being in the air like that was amazing. I felt weightless.'
“Subject 6446886, please concentrate on making the shadows come to you.” Was all the intercom had said this time. `They have had me doing this for 9 years now. Can't they just understand that this doesn't work.' I thought as I looked at the shadow of the clock, just trying to will it to me. After nothing happened for a few minutes the intercom stopped me and told me to wait five minutes and stretch.
I did as I was told and started stretching once I was done I laid down for the rest of the time. While I couldn't read a clock, I had a very good view of time. I knew that there was 52 weeks a year, 365 days a year, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, 60 minutes an hour, and 60 seconds a minute. I just never learned how to read the stupid clock, because I was never taught how to. Though I was sure if I looked at the thing I would be able to find out. I never really thought of it, but this is the only room that I have ever seen a clock. I stood up because I had counted to three hundred in my head and started for the door. I knew it had been five minutes, so what was the point in irritating myself. Especially when I know that when you fight you want to keep a cool head.
As I walked through the door I saw a security guard that had often been posted at the end of the hallway out side these rooms. “You ready to get your butt beat kid.” He taunted me. While I had never talked to him before I knew that I wouldn't like him. I just ignored him and walked to the opposite side of the room. I stood there when the intercom said, “Begin.” I stood there as the guard started running toward me with a fist raised. Then at the last second I ducked when he punched and threw a fist as hard as I dared into his stomach. He stumbled back a couple feet at which point he was knocked to the ground courtesy of a foot to his head. I stood there for a couple seconds waiting for him to get up, but he didn't move other then the slight movement from him breathing.
“Subject 6446886, go with the scientists to your room,” was all the intercom said. I didn't understand what was going on, so I just followed what I was told. I met one of the scientists I liked and started following him to my room.
“Vahn…” He whispered.
“Yes” I replied.
“When you get into your room take off your shirt and throw it over your lamp then knock on the door three times. After that I will come to speak with you more. Okay?”
“Yeah…,” was my hesitant reply.
He opened the door and I walked in. After he closed and locked the door. I waited a few minutes then took off my shirt a tossed it over the lamp. Then I knocked on the door three times lightly. It unlocked and in came a small group of scientists.
“What's going on here?” I asked confused. These were all the scientists that were nice to me.
“We are here to help you get out. We all have been tired of the treatment you have been receiving.” The scientist, a female, said.
“Why are all of you doing this? Whose the leader? When did you all decide to do this?” Questions were going through my head a million miles an hour. What was happening? How were they going to help me escape? The list just kept going.
“We are doing this because you are human and not a lab rat. Really no one is the leader, but if there was a leader it would probably be her, because she is the one who planned everything.” The scientist to the right of the first one said pointing to her.
We kept talking until I was convinced to leave. When the leader pulled out a small bird. “This is a merlin. We think that you will probably feel a connection to it. If not then it will lead you out.” The merlin was black with red at the tip of its tail, a two white swirls on its wings. I reached out to the bird wondering if it would let me hold it. The second it looked at me I paused the gaze of that bird was intelligent. `Who are you?' I sent my thoughts into the head of the merlin.
`My name is Lexus. I am one of your slaves.'
`Slaves? Thanks, but I don't want any slaves. How about friends, we will be friends?'
`That is acceptable.'
“He said he is my friend.” The scientist all smiled as the bird flew to my shoulder and I smiled as I continued, “So, when am I escaping?”
“In two hours you will hear your door unlock as they come to do another test. That will be the point of when you will escape. Just follow the bird. We will probably never see you again so we all brought you gifts.” They all brought out separate items. I just looked at them not knowing what I should do.
“Just take them.” One of them said. I took each one carefully. A book bag, a knife, a change of clothes, a pair of shoes, a watch, a laptop, and a cell phone. I knew how to use all of the items except the watch, because they were required in some of the tests, well except for the clothes and shoes. They all filed out of the room with their good lucks and good byes. While I just packed for my escape. I put only for sets of clothes in there including the ones I just received. I made sure I put the candle in there. I cut another of my shirts and created a sheath for the knife. I put on shoes for the first time ever in my room, well soon to be my old room. After I was done, I felt that I had about thirty minutes left at which point I rested myself. I knew breaking out of here would be a problem.
I heard the keys of the person unlocking the door and got ready. Once the door opened I jumped and kicked whoever it was that opened the door right in the face. Fe flew back right into the wall. I dragged him into the room and closed it on him while taking his keys.
Lexus took flight and started to the right after he got about ten feet in front of me I followed him. When I turned down the hall there were two guards. I ran toward them and jumped off the wall a delivered a spinning kick to ones face and a fist to the other. I kept running adding to the people I knocked out. Finally when I got to the bottom there was a single guard. `This is weird they usually have two or three guards posted at every point.' The man just looked at me and grinned. He pulled out two trench knives and lunged at me. I narrowed my eyes.
“You are obviously not like the others.” I said. His grin widened as he thrust his arm forward. I wasn't expecting it to be so coordinated as he slashed my arm when I tried to dodge. I shuddered as I felt the blood trail down my arm. I don't know why but when ever I felt myself in pain it always felt good. Now, I wore a grin of my own when it felt like something else was controlling my body. The guard and I were facing each other again. He lunged forward again and I didn't move until he was about an inch from my face. Then I grabbed his wrist and turned allowing the trench knife to scratch my cheek and with all the force I could muster, I jammed my other hand into his elbow. With a sickening pop I laughed as he screamed and fell to the floor. I took the knife from its sheath on my arm and dragged it across his arm.
“But those who stand out, need to be knocked back in.” I said as I dug the knife deeper to enjoy his screams. When he passed out from blood loss I picked up his trench knifes and took his sheaths for them. Then I left the building. I noticed Lexus sitting on some guys shoulder. “Lexus, how shall I deal with this? You claim to be my slave, yet you sit below another man.”
“Boy you need to get a hold of yourself. This bird doesn't bow down to your darker self, but the side that has kindness.” The man said. I studied him for a few moments. He was in his early forties, he had obviously exercised, and he carried a sword at his side.
“You will see what this side of me can do old man.” I yelled as I rushed forward. When I got to him, he vanished right where my fist was. Then I fell to the floor in so much pain I hated it.
“Boy, you have spirit and you will obviously need some help living out here in the real world.” He said all this then sighed as he continued, “How `bout you come with me and I will train you to be stronger and live in this world? My name is Inari, but it will do you good just to call me `Sensei', at least until your old enough to call me by my first name.” I could feel myself getting control of my body as all the rage left me. At which point I just nodded as I thought, `Finally, I am out of that hell.' He helped me up and we went off to where ever he was going.
