Chapter Five
Attack and Defend

“Everyday, after lunch and before their nap, we take the children to he library and Aluna reads them a story,” Laila said, swinging her hands forwards and back with Cossette and James’ as they skipped along on either side of her. Marius trudged ahead, far enough as he could while keeping in Laila’s line of sight.

“Everyday?” Neona asked. Walking behind the small group.

“It’s the busiest time during the day in the mansion, so it’s safe for us to leave the nursery,” Cossette said. “But he can go out any time he wants,” she grumbled, nodding her head towards Marius.

“Cossette, be nice,” Laila warned. Marius stopped in his tracks and turned on her. Laila’s back straightened and Neona rushed to her in alarm. The boy looked absolutely furious, his face flushed red, and his small brow’s pulled together while his lips snarled upwards to show his teeth.

Laila slowly pulled both her hands backwards, directing the rabbits to move away. They ley go of her and clamped onto Neona.

“Marius, that is not allowed,” Laila said softly. Neona frowned in surprise, she would have thought Laila to be more stern with the angry tiger cub. “Please, I would like you to join us at the library. If not, you may go back to the nursery now.”
His eyes narrowed and he glared over at the rabbits. “That’s not fair!” he growled, clenching his hands into fists. “Why don’t you yell at her instead!?” He stepped forwards, towards Cossette, and Laila sidestepped in front of her.

“Marius,” she said, her voice even softer than before. “It’s alright. Why don’t we go to the kitchen instead, for a snack?”

Neona’s blood went cold and she grabbed the children at her legs as Marius launched himself forwards with a growl. Neona heard Cossette and James let out yelps as they hit the floor and went sliding down the hall, but she ignored them.

Laila was on the ground with Marius on top of her, the boy was biting down into an arm she had used to shield herself when he attacked her. It took her only a fraction of a moment to see what the cub really was.

Neona heard another growl, and suddenly she had leapt forwards. She grabbed the back of the boys neck and squeezed hard while wrapping an arm around him and pulling him back.

Marius yowled in pain as she gripped his neck and released Laila. Neona, flinched as he kicked and twisted in her arms. He was strong, too strong for a what a normal boy should have been.

“Little monster,” Neona growled at him. He twisted and she lost her grip on his neck, he turned into her sweeping at her face with his claws while he hissed and spat.

Claws raked across her face and Neona dropped the boy. He crouched, growled once more at her and then turned towards a window and leapt threw it.

“Marius!” Laila screamed after him. Neona stumbled over to her, one hand covering the side of her torn face.
“Laila, Laila are you alright!?” she said franticaly, shaking now as the pain began to hit her.

“Marius! Marius!” Laila cried, gripping her arm with one hand while kicking her legs to get to the window.

Neona grabbed the bear to stop her. “Laila no, he’s gone!” She looked around frantically, for the rabbits to see that they were safe and found them huddled under a table at the end of a hall in fear.

“Let go of me! Get off! Get Off,” she screamed, her voice nearly roaring. Neona tried to hold her down, tried to get her to move her hand so she could see the wound.

“Exhaine! Exhaine!” The rabbits began choking out through their frightened tears. Neona heard something down the hall and looked up. Was help there? She only saw a blur before something hit her, something large and powerful.

“Bitch!” hissed something on top of her. Neona tried to bring her hands up, but one was pinned under her body, and the other suddenly throbbed in pain. “You die now!”

“Exhaine no!” Laila’s voice cried out. And Neona stiffened as she felt the tip of something very sharp press against her throat. “Please, Exhaine...” There was too much blood in her eyes for Neona to see who was on top of her, but they hesitated now.

“And why not?” said Exhaine, in a voice that sent strange shivers through Neona’s whole body.

“She didn’t...” Laila began, her voice braking as she spoke. Neona whined, Laila was still in pain, why was no one getting help?

“It was Marius!” James yelled. Neona could hear the children’s feet as they came forwards. “Neona tried to protect us!”

“Yes, let her go!” Cossette pleaded.

Exhaine gestured to someone else that was there, Neona only heard a soft step before something else leapt out the window where Marius had gone.

“Silvius,” said a masculine voice Neona didn’t know, and Laila whimpered. Neona whined again.

“I’ll have everything ready,” said another male- Silvius she guessed. Suddenly Exhaine’s weight was gone, Neona tried to sit up and felt her throbbing hand pull against something. She gritted her teeth as pain shot up her arm.

“This will hurt,” said the first masculine voice and something was pulled from her hand. She yelped, and brought her hand in towards her chest as she rolled onto her side and curled into a ball. Neona shook, her face burned, and hand stung in pain.

It was too much, this new place, the dangerous people, the wounds and pain, too many strangers too many scents she didn’t know. She felt a whimper escape her throat and heard her own voice just before her eyes finally went dark.

“Roshka...”
