Pulling the mesh bag his mom gave him from under his bed Chris secured it to his belt loop on his way to the front door. "I'm going out now." He called to his mom, letting the screen door slam shut behind him. Grabbing the thick stick he kept under the porch Chris jumped on his bike, holding it across the handle bars. Riding down to the road he made sure no cars were coming before riding across to the woods beside the golf course.
Weather permitting he spent time everyday during golf season gathering lost golf balls to sell back to the clubhouse. It didn't make a lot of money but out here in the country it was either this or the occasional odd job he could pick up from the older people who lived in the trailer court. He certainly was old enough to get a job at one of the local farms but none of the men seemed interested in giving him a chance; they were looking for strong young men who could obviously handle hard physical labor, his shorter than average height and slight build; that his mom called 'delicate bone structure', just didn't cut it.
Parking his bike he kept his eyes on where he was walking, watching out for sticker bushes and snakes; neither of which were fun to step on with bare feet and of course he watched for the white dimpled surface of any balls. Pushing through the woods that lined the west side of the course Chris stopped occasionally when he noticed an area of weeds tangled up; most of the time it turned out a ball had fallen there.
Swinging the walking stick through the tall grass he stepped back allowing a rather long black snake to pass by him before resuming his search. He was over half way down the length of the woods with almost a full bag of golf balls when he spotted a large area of weeds shoved over. "Yes!" Dropping to his knees he pulled at the grass, there sat the mother load; several perfect balls all together. Pulling them out of the dirt he quickly rubbed them against his cut off jeans making them as presentable as possible; the better they looked the more he'd get for them. Taking hold of the last one he noticed the dirt was disturbed, thinking he might have found another ball that had been driven into the dirt he took up his stick and began digging it out.
The first thing that appeared was a thick string, giving it a yank Chris scowled at the mud crusted stone hanging from it. Using the weeds to rub the mud off he held it up to the light filtering down through the trees. "Some kinda engraving?" He mumbled, noticing some lines carved into the stone, shrugging his shoulders he pocketed the strange necklace. He wasn't the type to wear jewelry but when he got it cleaned up if the stone turned out to be interesting he'd keep it.
Trudging out of the woods to his bike Chris swung over to the clubhouse to turn in his find for the day. He'd gathered enough to at least buy himself a pop and hopefully a candy bar too. Parking the bike out of the way of incoming cars he leaned his stick against the fence before brushing off his clothes. He might have been crawling through the woods but his mother would kill him if she knew he showed up at the clubhouse without trying to clean off a little at least.
Swinging open the gate he marched in, quickly locating the golf course's owner, Mr. Charles Boggs; he was a decent man who also owned the trailer court his family lived in along with the farmland and woods that surrounded both places.
"Well if it isn't young Christopher Lockhart. Have you come to sell more golf balls?" Mr. Boggs asked walking behind the counter and pulling out two boxes he used to store the used golf balls he sold. "Yes sir, I found a whole bunch today." Chuckling the older man nodded motioning for him to put them on the counter. "Let's see what you got then."
"Make sure not to cheat the boy Charles." One of the men seated at the tables warned. "If it wasn't for Christopher bringing in those balls I wouldn't have any to play with."
"That's cause you're too damn cheap to buy new ones Marvin." One of the man's friends slapped him on the back.
The whole business didn't take long. Ones that were in perfect condition he'd get a dime, scuffed but no cuts he'd get a nickel, and everything else was junk. When all was said and done he found himself a whole dollar twenty richer. "Go use the restroom before you buy your candy. I don't want Mary to find out I let you eat with dirt on your hands."
His brother Tony existed the office, taking the boxes from his brother he shook his head. "That woman has you whipped if you worry about what she'll say about the condition of someone else's kid." Handing over the young man's money the owner chuckled at his brother. "You'd understand if you'd ever married Tony." Giving Chris a wink and motioning him towards the bathroom. "That's when marriage becomes real bliss; when you just give up and let them control you." The men in the clubhouse erupted into laughter while Chris headed back to the small bathroom.
Closing the door he pulled out the necklace he had found, dropping it into the sink while working on getting the dirt and grass out from under his nails. Once the worst was off he went to work on the necklace, rubbing his hands over the greenish blue colored stone and what turned out to be a leather strap. Giving his hands one more wash he dried both himself and the necklace off. 'It's a pretty stone and not girly. Well finder’s keepers I say.' He decided knotting the leather strap and slipping it over his head.
Sitting down at one of the tables with his candy bar and pop Chris enjoyed listening to the older men's banter. This was his Monday ritual. Any other day he'd give the money he made to his mom; which she'd hide so they had money for school supplies and clothes for him. But his mother had insisted that every Monday he took some of the money to buy something for himself; a reward for all he did. Sitting at the clubhouse with the men for awhile was about the only contact with the outside world he could get. Living in the country with no close towns left him cut off from what was going on and the only kids around the area were farm kids who didn't live very close and were always busy. The trailer court didn't have any other families with children so during the summer breaks he only had adults to interact with, which was fine with him, truthfully dealing with his peers gave him a headache.
Turning when the door chimed he gawked at the new comers; it wasn't everyday you'd see people dressed like they had been to a funeral come to the golf course. The man had salt and pepper hair, with broad shoulders his suit exaggerating them. The teenager boy with him was his copy, but his hair was all black. The black-haired boy was a lot taller than Chris and was built more like a man than a teenager. Piercing blue eyes locked on to him, causing his breath to catch. Ducking his head, he let his long shaggy bangs cover his face. Part of him hoped the boy would ignore him, he'd never been good at dealing with people his own age. Give him an adult to talk to and he knew where he stood but he always found himself tongue tied around other kids. Often he'd end up sticking his foot in his mouth or loosing his temper, being frequently harassed by other guys at school gave a person a short fuse. 'Short fuse for a short person.' Snorting at his own joke Chris gave his attention to his pop determined to ignore the other boy.
Pulling some money out of his pocket Jonathan left his father speaking to the man behind the counter. Selecting a drink from the machine he pulled the glass bottle out while discreetly watching the smaller blonde boy sitting alone at one of the tables. He could tell by the way the boy handled himself he wasn't as young as he looked, his height and build was deceiving. 'Hell his built more like a girl than a young man.' To his disappointment he hadn't been able to distinguish his eye color yet but the way he was shyly hiding his face under his long hair was too cute.
Moving to take a seat with him Jonathan reminded himself to be careful about how he acted, his father and the older man had taken a seat at the table beside the boy. "Got room for one more?" He asked smirking when the other boy just pointed to one of the chairs. Taking a sit he gave the boy a good going over while taking a drink. Shaggy blonde hair; slightly longer than most boys wore it, his own father insisted his hair be kept short in a military buzz. He had a slight tan; obviously he spent time out in the sun, but his thin smooth limbs didn't show any signs of hard physical work. 'He's built more like those girls I see doing gymnastics at the Y.'
"So you live around here?" Taking a bite of his candy bar Chris nodded, pointing in the general direction of his family's place. "My family lives in the trailer court over there." Keeping his eyes hidden under his bangs the smaller boy could still feel the other's eyes on him, it was slightly unnerving. "Many kids live around here?" The dark-haired boy asked before sipping on his drink. Sighing Chris shook his head. "Just me, some of the farms have kids but not close enough to do anything with them."
"Must be boring around here for you." The boy remarked twisting the bottle between his fingers. Shrugging his shoulders and taking a deep breath Chris was determined to not let the dark-haired boy control the whole conversation. Shaking the hair out of his face he looked up. "So where are you from? I'm Chris . . . Chris Lockhart, can I ask your name?"
"Maybe . . . ." The other boy replied bringing his hands behind his head he closed his eyes and tipping back in his seat, if he had looked he would have seen the blonde scowl at him. 'Greenish brown, not very stunning for an eye color but they look nice on him.' Clearing his throat he introduced himself. "Jonathan Wolfe, dad's thinking of building a house around here. Right now we're living in an apartment near his office; in the capital. Dad's a big shot lawyer there."
"The capital? That's really far away. Why move here?"
Tilting his head and cracked one eye open at the smaller boy when he interrupted him Jonathan bit the inside of his cheek, the other boy was blushing. Letting his chair right it's self Jonathan leaned against the table. "Him and mom got divorced not too long ago. Mom got the house then decided that I need to spend more time with my dad. I think it was just an excuse since she's got herself a new guy, my guess is I was in the way, now I'm living with my dad."
"Sorry to hear that." Looking away Chris sighed, he had always thought he had troubles but at least his parents were still together. "So why are you guys here?" Watching the other boy's reaction Jonathan replied. "Dad decided it wasn't good for me to be in the city by myself when he was at work. He came here and played golf a couple of times with some friends and thought this place would be perfect to build a house. I figure he thinks I'd cause less trouble for him if he left me out here in the sticks while he was at work. He's talking to Mr. Boggs right now about buying some of his land." It wasn't the whole truth but he wasn't about to scare him off with the real reason his dad didn't want him living in the city anymore.
'It would be nice to have someone my own age around here but what land would Mr. Boggs sell them? The trailer court and golf course makes enough money I don't think he'd sale them. That would leave the cow pasture, crop fields, or woods.' Looking down at his drink Chris gripped the bottle a little tighter. 'I can't see him selling off the fields, it's not like he does the farming anyway; he's got other guys doing that. I'd miss the cows if he got rid of the pasture since we aren't allowed pets they've been the closet things to one I've ever had.' Bitting his lip in worry he knew all that left was the woods.
He'd spent his entire life playing in those woods and knew every inch of them. That place between the hills with all the berry patches and fruit trees he gathered from and that stream that was rich with fish and crawdads. 'If they tear up the woods that's going to put a hurt on us. There's been times I know we would have gone hungry cause of dad's drinking if not for the stuff I bring up to mom.' It wasn't his dad was a bad person or lazy; hell he was seldom home cause he worked two jobs in town but the man had always had a problem with alcohol. At times after the bills were paid and his dad had his beer there wasn't much money left for other stuff and that included food. Paying more attention to the two adults at the table beside them Chris listen in on their conversation about the land. At the mention of the back half of the woods Chris jerked out of his seat turning to the men. "Not that place."
"Chris." Mr. Boggs scolded but it did little to stop the boy. "You shouldn't sell that part of the woods for a house to be built. That means he'll tear down the forest right ?" Chuckling Jonathan stood placing his hand on the other boy's shoulder. "Calm down, it's just trees." Shaking his head Chris clenched his hands into fist. "No, it's not. It's a special place that shouldn't be destroyed, especially for just a house. How big a place do just he two of you need? Get a trailer and move into the court."
Standing Mr. Boggs gestured for Mr. Wolfe to follow him into his back office. "I'm sorry Russell, let's finish this in my office." Once the man was in his office the older man turned back to Chris. "This doesn't concern you so I suggest you take off." Bowing his head at the reprimand Chris gathered his things and headed towards the door.
Following him out Jonathan yelled. "Hey, if it helps it's not a done deal yet. Dad's going to have some surveyors met us here tomorrow at ten. Why don't you show me this place you don't want messed up. Maybe I can talk dad into a different area." Reaching for his stick Chris warily watched the other boy. "Why would you do that? You don't know me, why help me?" Huffing the taller young man reached to rub the side of his head. "Look, if we move here it'd be nice to have someone to hang out with." Seeing the other boy still gave him a distrustful look he put out his hands in surrender. "You got all the power here, I'm the new guy. You're use to living here, I'm not." Gesturing to himself he reminded the blonde. "Big city kid remember. Think about it, I don't want to piss off the only person my age around here." Chris nodded in reply, he understand that. He had grown up never having anyone his own age around but someone use to lots of people would feel lost.
Hoping for the chance to get the other boy alone Jonathan pressed on. "Besides if there's some place back there that's nice enough for you to put on that little show, I want to see it too." Blushing Chris bit his lip. "You should let your dad know you're going with me then." Unable to resist the urge Jonathan ruffled the blonde's unruly hair. "Be right back."
Shifting his weight Chris hoped this would work. The valley wasn't easy to get into so hopefully that would turn them off on building there plus there was lots of places that were just regular trees with no rocky hills that would make a better place for a house. 'Since I know the woods so well maybe Mr. Wolfe will forgive me and let me guide them around tomorrow.' Upon the dark boy's return Chris grabbed up his stick and held it across the handle bars again, pushing what was left of his candy bar into his shirt pocket he moved his pop bottle into his mouth so he had his hands free to ride home; he'd done this a million times. Hearing a gagging sound he turned back to the dark-haired boy, watching him wipe his mouth and nose off with his sleeve. 'Did he just shoot pop out of his nose?'
Reaching up Jonathan took hold of the bottle, holding it till the boy released it. "What?" Giving the shorter boy a stern look the taller reprimand him. "It's not safe to ride with a bottle in your mouth. I'll hold it for you." Shrugging his shoulders at him Chris pushed off. "Whatever, it's not like I don't do it all the time." Following the boy across the road he watching him park his bike at one of the trailers and shove the walking stick under the porch. 'This might be something you do all the time but I can't deal with you having something long and hard in your mouth in front of me if I'm going to behave myself.'
