“So he killed two men and that's what he's wanted for?”
Russell and Jack were sitting in chairs in front of the wall of police reports and photos. Jack was holding a small newspaper clipping and peering at it with interest.
“Says here that they were found together in an alleyway, the murder weapon lying on the ground next to them. But he got careless and the second victim survived long enough to tell hospital personnel who did it to him.”
“And they never found him?”
Jack laughed humorlessly. “Obviously not. But there's nothing on him other than petty theft since then, and he's got to be 17 or 18 now. He was just 10 when he killed those guys.”
“Ten! How did the cops believe a 10-year-old stabbed and killed two adult men?!”
“They didn't. Tompson was never caught and tried for the murders, and I bet the cops didn't even try to look for him. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?” he said darkly. Russell nodded.
“So what did he do this time? Why was Eddie sent out to bring him in?”
“Tompson robbed a small-scale bank last week. Didn't get much, but it was enough to set him in our sights again.”
“I see.”
“It was just supposed to be a routine thing.” Jack's voice shook out. “Go in, get the crook, and bring him back here, that's all. I though Eddie could do it alone, he seemed so excited about his first mission, he called it. And then…” He trailed off. “I should have gone with him. Even if I thought he would be fine I should have gone too. Damn it, Russell, why didn't I go with him?” Tears started to slide down Jack's face.
“It wasn't your fault, Jack. These things happen. It's all just chance. One day your number comes up, and that day it was Eddie's. Don't blame yourself, Jack, you couldn't have done anything.”
Jack inhaled slowly, then raised his head and wiped his tears away. “You're right, Russell, I've just got to make things right, that's all. I will make things right. I will.”
“Just don't get carried away, friend.”
“Right, right, I know.”
