[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]
He had been away from home for almost a year. He had been out to sea and was at work in protecting the country, the ones he loved and most of all for her. She was his life and he was doing everything in his power to insure her future. She meant the world to him. She had seen him for what he truly was rather than what he own or of his reputation. She had simply loved him for being the man that he was. She had never asked him for anything and yet he would stop at nothing to give her whatever she wanted. He knew that she loved him and he in turn made sure that she knew that he loved her as much as she loved him. He was now at his doorstep with her favorite flowers, white roses. He could not wait to see her face and be able to embrace the one he loved so dearly. However the sight he was to encounter was far beyond what he would have expected.
She slashed at him violently.
He was surprised by her reaction towards his return home from after being out at sea for almost a year. He had expected a kiss, a hug, or that she would pounce on him from being so excited, but no, she had instead chose to come at him with a knife. He kept dodging from her attacks wondering why she was doing what she was. Had he been away for too long? Had something happened during his absence? Did someone harm her in anyway? He looked upon her face and saw a sad smile on her lips. She was paler than when he had last seen her. She was much thinner than she was before. She looked as if she had lost so much sleep. What could bring about such a change in her? What had he done for her to react such a way? She was his only one. How could this happen? They were meant to be together. After all that they had been though, how could this happen?
She managed to scratch him, when he was finally able to stop her. He grabbed her and pulled her close to his body. He held her. That was all that he had wanted to do since he had left. He held her tightly. She ceased her onslaught. She hugged him back. She cried. The warmth of her body wasn't the same as it was before. It was much colder than it was before. Her embrace seemed weakened. What was wrong? As he was holding her, she somewhat collapsed against his chest. Alarmed, he lowered her to look at her pale face.
She smiled at him sadly, “I'm so sorry, honey… I didn't see you…”
He then noticed that she was not looking at his eyes and they were instead only somewhat towards his directions.
“I've gone blind and I haven't much longer to live…”
He nearly choked on his breath.
“I had gone to the doctor and he said that it was cancer. I wanted to get the treatment for it, but he said that it was too late… That I should just give up. I told him that I would do anything… That was when he told me to sleep with him… That since you were gone and I was going to die it wouldn't matter… I ran home… And I've been here ever since…”
He held her and rocked her as if it would solve everything.
“I'm so tired…” she said as she held onto him. “But I'm so scared I won't wake up.” Tears slowly ran down her eyes. He kissed her tears and kissed her lips. “I'm here now… I won't let anything happen to you.” She smiled as she lay against his chest.
“Babe…”
“Hmm?”
“You know I love you, right…?”
He held back a sob. “Yes I do, sweetie.”
“Babe…”
“Yes?”
“You're going to love me forever… Right…?
“Of course you dummy!”
She smiled against his chest.
“Good…”
She slowly became limp in his embrace as he cried into her hair. He wasn't able to spend time with her, all that precious moments lost forever. He was never going to get them back… Their dream of growing old together was now just a memory. There was nothing.
She was gone.
He had wasted his time being away from her and now she was gone.
